The first unit was installed and lasted 36 hours. However Amazon replied immediately and sent a replacement overnight. The replacement has been in full operation for several weeks.The 10,000 RPM drive reduced boot-up time by about 25 percent over a 7200 RPM drive. Start up time of application software has been significantly reduced. It runs very quite. I am not a gamer; however I am please with the increase in performance.Sam

Bottlom line, all the hype was not really worth it. I only get a 5.4 from the Windows 7 Ult test and other HD tests from others also rate this drive pretty slow. For the price, it should be faster.

I had originally had a raptor 150 gig drive and after a regular drive it was great...Fast (substantially) and quick boot times... The velociraptor is even better ( is this possible?) it is way quieter, not that the raptor was that noisy... And faster and uses less power... Any one wanting fast read times and write times, this is the drive to have.... When loading programs you can not tell it is there...

I had a pair of WD 1600 Raptors in Raid 0 on a Dell Dimension 710. When one failed I bought a pair of these hoping to get a modest improvement in speed as well as storage space. I was concerned about noise, as some reviewers have complained about these being noisy. However, compared to my previous hard drives, these are much quieter and noticeably faster. Running in Raid 0 I got HD Tune 2.55 results of:HD Tune: NVIDIA STRIPE 558.92G BenchmarkTransfer Rate Minimum : 138.8 MB/secTransfer Rate Maximum : 214.5 MB/secTransfer Rate Average : 158.6 MB/secAccess Time : 6.9 msBurst Rate : 178.6 MB/secCPU Usage : 5.7%Install was a snap and I am very pleased with these hard drives.

I haven't done rigorous testing between this and my previous drive (Raptor) to compare the speed but everything works great. My Raptor lasted around 4 or 5 years and still works like a champ.

I bought this drive and it was dead in just over two weeks. These drives have problems. You are better off getting two 7200.4 that this thing. Not worth the money, time and be prepared to lose your work.

This is a very fast and very quiet drive. It is faster than the predecessor Raptor 10K drive I still use.The photo is misleading as all the internal parts are sealed under a metal cover, just like any other hard drive.I am using the drive for video transfer, and it is fast enough that I don't need a RAID configuration.

This drive remains to be one of the fastest drives available. I have three of VelociRaptors drives running RAID0 for performance on par to my expectations. The solid state drives price point don't add up in value like the VelociRaptor do. Great performance, value $1 a gig so I still value these drives. I compared them to solid state results in my HDTune pro with read results Minimum 158.7MB, Maxium 230.7MB, Average 190.5MB, Access time 7.1ms, Burst rate 192.1MB. I don't have my friends solid state results in Hdtune but he was quite surprise that my results were as good as his for more storage and less money.

I'm using the VelociRaptor as the OS drive in my media center/file server machine. Since switching from an older 120GB WD drive to this drive, the machine is much more responsive and snappy. I'm super happy with this device. It strikes a great balance between performance and cost given the current prices of SSDs. If you need a faster OS drive but don't want to shell out the money for a SSD right now, this is a wonderful alternative.

This drive is FAST!!!!!! I mean this thing goes. This is my first raptor, and the first time i turned on my computer it had to of booted up almost 50% faster. Solid as a rock. Im very happy with this drive and id recommend it to any enthusiast out there! Cant wait for a second one so i can raid them. At times the drive can be a little loud, kinda reminds me of the older hard drives out there when u can hear them write to the disk, i can hear it a bit compared to my other drives, but what can u say this baby is movin at 10,000 RPMS! Love it

Although the cost per GB is higher than standard 7200RPM 8MB drives, this drive gives superior performance. The "seat-of-the-pants" feel of how the drive works is crispy with very little latency. 3 difference HD performance testing softwares show that this drive is almost twice as fast as 7200RPM/8MB drive. I'm going to buy the 320GB Velociraptor next.

very nice design, solid, very fast drive and silent even with the PowerMac aluminun case, you will hear it working but nothing extreme, as a boot drive is fast and stable, i never try it as a storage or raid, the package is very simple as every OEM product, came only with a brown box with some cushion paper, invoice and the drive nothing fancy.the price in amazon is the cheaper i could find around online, i went to bestbuy and frys just to compare the prices they want between 399 to 439 plus tax and a 2 weeks waiting to order and 5 more days to pick up LOL!!!!.anyway very good service from amazon i order with the supersaver was 2 weeks for delivery and i got it in 3 days!!!!awsome product and service.

Windows rated my system 5.2 because of the low data transfer rate of my hard drive. I purchased the VelociRaptor because of the 10,0000 RPM speed and 16 MB Cache. Windows now rates my system at 5.9 citing the low disk transfer rate of my hard drive. Not much of an improvement.

We bought a number of the regular Raptors to upgrade our AtomicAvenue.com production servers, but had to return them when we discovered that the way the smaller drive form factor is positioned within the heat sink makes them not line up with our server's hot-swappable ports.Crushed, I still decided to spring for a test unit of these "backplane-compatible" versions (there's a special bracket offsetting the connectors so that they slot into the same position that they would be in on a conventional 3.5" drive). It cost $100 more than the other version (grr!), but it turns out to have been money well spent.Database performance went up about 10% overall from the older-edition Raptors it was hosted on, but the difference that moving our covers on Atomic Avenue over to the new drive was night and day! (We serve up over 250,000 comic covers in various sizes--over a million files on one disk, and even the trivial amount of time spent doing directory lookups and serving the 10K to 150K-sized files is magnified by both user loads and the sheer number of graphics per page). With the new drive as our cover serving store, we actually managed to halve the time required to serve the actual page--and that's simply by relocating the images, not the web site or server software itself!In short: pricey, but *well* worth the money--at least in our case. If you don't need backplane connectivity, save a C-note and get the regular model (WD3000GLFS), but even at the huge markup for the backplane model(WD3000HLFS), it's going to pay for itself quickly in our application.

Works great and fast for quick boots on my desktop. The only thing I want to note is that it's very cool to the touch compared to my old raptor. (I have a drive caddy on the front of my tower for swapping OS drives in and out, and my old raptor is almost too hot to handle, and the velociraptor comes out barely above room temperature

That's what I did. Amazing speed. Photoshop CS4 and all my brushes and plugins loads in less than 2 seconds. I can load a 100MB TIFF file in less than 2 seconds. Game levels like the first level in Crysis loads in about 5 seconds. This is a serious boost to your computer speed.Getting two puts you at around 300GB and $350, while the 300GB version is about $300. Pay a little more and run two together at the same time in RAID 0 - you will basically double it's already fast speed. Then get a 1TB or more storage drive to store all your files. Keep the programs and Windows on the fast 10K RPM drives. You will not be disappointed!

I have had this drive for 2 weeks, used it for testing purposes in a rig for a friend and this drive performs above the average 7200rpm or older 10k Raptors. They sure are better than the 7200 rpm stuff out there. Seek times are marginally faster than the old raptor while capacity is acceptable for the current generation of OS requirements.Price per GB is about ~$1. If you search the market you will find that 15000 rpm SAS drives are much faster than this dinasour in terms of rotational speed, latency and seek times. The sequential read of 15k drives is about the same as 10k but SAS drives are much more efficient and a step above this. What matters in a drive is the small size random writes and the SAS trounce the raptor in every sense.Current generation of motherboards have marvell SAS controllers which is enough and getting a SAS drive is a better route than the Raptor. There isn't anything better than 15k drives in the mechanical drives realm. If you are buying this is because you are enthusiast and since the SAS drives cost less than the raptor makes this product overpriced slow and bad choice.

This is indeed very nice and fast drive, unfortunately it's plagued (actually all velociraptor models are, from what I know) with buggy firmware. One of the internal counters wraps around after ~49 days of uptime, causing any active read/write/flush command to timeout (only with TLER enabled, which is the default for "enterprise" models). You can imagine the joy of having somewhat busy raid array with such drives and decent uptime.WDC knows very well about this bug, but it doesn't seem to be bothered too much... Enjoy "enterprise" class drives WDC way (not that other drive vendors are saint or something).[...]

I love this drive, Fast, quiet, low surface temp. Solid and reliable performance.It's a great buy for those who require fast transfer rates and low latencies, it does make my computer feel faster. OS and progs take several seconds less to load, and a user immediately senses the difference.Awesome hard drive, but watch your budget.

I love this drive. I've had the 300gb version for about a month. The drive is hands down faster than any drive I've ever had. Don't go through the hassle of scsi, it is not worth the price and grief. This drive just plugs in and your ready to go. I used Acronis to backup my old drive and to restore to this one. So easy. The drive never pauses and runs cooler than my old drive. SSD (solid state drives) are coming into their own, but won't be cost effective until mid 2010 in my opinion. Plus they still have the 80 mbps limit on writes. I develop databases so I use my pretty heavily. Very quiet too.

I can not comment much on this product because I was sent a Seagate Cheetah instead, but Amazon was nice enough to take it back and is sending the right order. I have purchased this same model before and it works great. There was some small problems but now it works and it is very fast.

Been a long time user of Western Digital hard drives and the one time I had an issue with one (about 12 years ago) they gave me a new drive at no expense to me even though it was out of warranty. Ever since then I continue to use their drives in my computers.Using this drive as my Vista Home 64 boot drive and have been pleased with it's performance although I have not ran benchmarks on it. Vista's rating system gives it a 5.9, but that isn't really telling you anything.Just be aware this is an OEM drive, meaning it comes in ESD bag without any cables, mounting hardware, or documentation. Not really an issue since any motherboard comes with more than enough SATA cables, but if you are adding it to an existing computer make sure to order yourself a cable.
