First of all, let me start by saying that this is a gamer's hard drive. If you're not playing games, there's very few other applications that warrant the extra cost for a bit more speed over modern large-cache 7200 RPM drives. Nowadays, your hard drive is practically guaranteed to be the bottleneck in your system. If you run apps that do frequent reads and writes it's going to be a major bottleneck indeed.First off, a general breakdown on this drive. It is 279 GB after formatting (don't freak out, that's normal). It sports a 16 MB cache, which was crazy when it first came out but now is actually pretty average. It's 10,000 RPM and clearly has fine-tuned mechanics, which primarily accounts for its very low seek/read/write times. The drive is a 2.5" but comes with a built-in (and not removable) mount and heatsink that makes it a 3.5" which is standard for most desktop internal drives. It's a 300 GB drive according to spec- I'm not sure why it says 250 in the description above, but this drive only comes in 150 and 300 GB versions, and from the cost it's obviously the latter. It works perfectly fine with Windows 7, Linux, etc. if this wasn't obvious (not sure why they even mention OS compatibility in the specs).The drive is very quiet and uses remarkably low power for a 10k RPM. This is pretty much the best drive in its class available anywhere- there were some competitors but they seem to have given up and focused on solid state disks (SSDs) instead. If you want the fastest conventional hard drive available, with very high reliability and decent capacity, look no further. Especially in RAID, this thing just smokes any other setup. You can expect games to load data at least twice as fast as they would with a vanilla 7200 RPM.Now, the question everyone that's still reading this must be asking: if you're going to pay this much for a hard drive (cost per storage, it's at least 5 times the cost of a high-end 7200 RPM), why not just get an SSD instead? The answer is actually pretty simple: SSDs are still way too primitive and expensive. A VelociRaptor is actually a bit faster than low end SSDs and it's proven technology that you can expect to work for the full 5 year warranty coverage, if not longer. SSDs are relatively new to market and- as with all other flash-based tech- have limited write/rewrites that can cause problems down the road. They also don't generally perform well with the SATA interface which is what almost all motherboards still use. If you want the fast loads for gaming, this drive is clearly a better choice than an SSD unless you only play one or two games. How many games are you going to fit on a 64 GB SSD (which is, by the way, more expensive)? Nowadays you'd be lucky to fit 5 on there besides Windows.If you're willing to shell out the extra money for the fastest hard drive available, this is it. You'll be amazed how fast it installs stuff and loads data. If you're on a budget or don't consider yourself an enthusiast, go for a lower-priced 7200 with a 32 MB cache.

First impressions:It's pretty good for an OS drive. It installed Windows 7 in what seemed like 10 to 15 minutes.Shipping:Shipping was quick, about 4 days after placing my order. The mailman handed me a Western Digital cardboard box. I was surprised at how small the box was. I was expecting a box within a box, namely the Western Digital box inside an Amazon box. The drive was factory sealed in it's anti-static bag and secured in the box by two black plastic drive holders. The drive is working fine, so far and I expect it to last long as an OS drive.Noise:The drive is silent until it starts seeking. It's not as loud as my WD6401AALS, which is surprising. Neither drive compares to the WD6400AAKS which I found to be very quiet, if not silent, when I owned it. But then again, these are 3 different types of drives......Velociraptor, Caviar Black and Caviar Blue.Heat:Heat is not a factor in my setup. HD Tune and SpeedFan shows the Velociraptor running 5 degrees cooler than the Caviar Black WD6401AALS, even as the Velociraptor was doing a SageTV QAM tuner scan. It's winter, so I'd really like to see how the temperatures fare during the summer, in a hot room.Speed:Applications load faster and file transfers are also faster. I can see and feel the difference, compared the 7200 RPM WD6401AALS.Final impressions:I got this drive at a low price here at Amazon. My timing was just right for a change. The drive is faster than the 7200 RPM drives I mentioned above. It's quieter and runs cooler than the WD6401AALS in my setup. It has a 5 year warranty and should be a great OS drive. I'm very satisfied, so far with the drive.

Pure specification numbers, particularly the 10K RPM speed, would logically indicate this is the fastest SATA II drive outside of solid state, but some benchmark reviews and my own experience brings up some questions. I do like that the drive is quiet compared to the Raptor predecessor. The first 10K Raptors were only 37 and 74 GB, SATA I, and noisy. The Velociraptor series is much quieter and comes in the 150 and 300 GB flavors and SATA II. However, I don't think the price is worth it. I have "regular" 7.2K RPM SATA II drives with no RAID that give Win 7 ratings of 5.9, and my RAID 0 dual 300GB Velociraptor only gives a 6.2Of course Win 7 ratings are nowhere as reliable as throughput and random access tests, but just Google Velociraptor vs. Samsung Spinpoint and read for yourself. While the random access times are faster for the Velociraptor, most read/write/burst speeds are faster for Spinpoint and Spinpoint is even faster than SSD on some tests. So random access is the ability to "Find" what you are looking for. The other tests are related to processing a found item or creating a new file, which may be more important for people working with multimedia and large files. So if you want to load your OS fast or find a file fast, then SSD is the best if you can afford it. If you are copying files from A to B, creating large files, etc... then Spinpoint beats even SSD. So a good SSD with decent capacity runs over $400 at the time of this review. A pair of Velociratptors @ 300 GB each for a total of 600 GB at RAID 0 will run you nearly $400. A 1TB Spinpoint will cost you about $80 with some tax or S/H it may get near $100. So for the price of 1 quality SSD at about 128GB you can get 2 Velociraptors at 600 GB with RAID 0 or 4 Spinpoints with 2 2TB logical drives on RAID 0, resulting in 4000GB>600GB>128GB. So it really raises the question of price vs gain (if any) of buying a Velociraptor, or 2 for that matter. I feel like I wasted money on my dual Velociraptors but didn't know about Spinpoint prior to my purchase. Of course the newer 600GB Velociraptors with the new SATA standard are available but I haven't seen the benchmarks on those, nor the price.

This device -- a Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM, 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive -- was really easy to install. After formatting it with Windows XP, it booted-up without error and has been performing smoothly in my computer for about a month, now. The drive operates swiftly in concert with my computer's configuration -- Intel Core2 Duo E6850 CPU at 3.0 GHz, four GB's of RAM, on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 motherboard.Regarding the drive's 10,000 rpm rotation rate, all tasks commonly associated with desirable hard drive performance are executed with an observable incease in speed. Opening programs, saving files, processing data, working with audio and movie files, Internet connections and more, have sped up noticably. I would say it's a quiet-running drive, also, which is a subjective opinion. I don't notice it. Anyway, the fans are the noisiest components on a desktop computer in my experience.So, as I said in the title of this little review, 'so far, so good!'.

The Velociraptors are getting a bad rap these days when most enthusiasts are gravitating toward SSD's. Granted, the speed of the Raptor is pretty weak compared to the SSD but the price is still hard to beat, and the bang for your buck is considerably higher. I have one of these running Windows 7 Ultimate and all of my programs/games and the load times are absolutely adequate for me. At 150GB, it is close to what I would recommend as a MINIMUM for a proper system drive and that makes its $90 pricetag far more attractive than the $300 a similar capacity SSD would cost. The noise is not an issue for me but make no mistake, it is far from silent. Its a distinctive tone as well, kind of like a jet flying far overhead. I have been up and running for two months and have had no issue out of the Raptor so far. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on this HDD and it is fast. My system does not have a lot of programs booting at startup but this drive has me up and running from a power on to full active desktop in just over 24 seconds.I do only have my OS and program files on this drive. That means nothing gets saved to my desktop, everything other than the OS and program files goes to my additional HDD's (WD Black Caviar 500GB drives).If you are looking for a fast drive but do not want to spend the money for a SSD this is the way to go.

Yes, it's fast, relatively quiet and all that good stuff. But what's the point if the thing dies after only 8 weeks?? Just long enough so Amazon won't take it back...And even if they did, it has a lot of personal and financial data on it. So who's going to send it back anyhow? Since it was in RAID, I now end up having to buy yet another one of these and luckily I didn't lose all my data. But from what I see in the reviews, I am not the first to have one die in a very short period of time. I still give it 3 stars to be fair - when it worked it was a nice drive. I should also say that I own 10 computers for my business and I have been around computers for the last 15 years. This is the first time I have ever had a hard drive die in a matter of months. So while I don't like to paint a broad brush on the entire product line because of my one bad experience, I still feel pretty upset about it and I seriously question the future reliability of these drives. I will update as things progress...

It is now three weeks that I installed Western Dig. 10,000 Rpm Caviar the only problem I encounter is you have to install the latest DRIVERS otherwise you'll end up with the ( BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH )since most problem are created from OUTDATED DRIVERS.At first I couldn't figured out what was wrong until I Downloaded (Drivers updater) for a fee of course since I'm not a PC geek therefore i had to rely on experts. I had to install the drivers one at a time & reboot the system until all the drivers ( 12 in my case) was installed & bingo no problem afterward. Everybody was telling Me you have (Virus, Mal ware, Spy ware, & so on ) where the culpable was the drivers. Even though I checked in the DEVICE MANAGER everything was normal & it shows that I have the best DRIVERS available for some reason that was not the case, I even took the PC to an ( EXPERT ??? ) & was told you have to get new hardware ( B.S. ) By the way I did a Fresh install the Hard Drives set to RAID 0 I have a DELL XPS600 3.2 EXTREME EDITION if that interesting you.

I have been using the Western Digital Raptor line of hard drives over 10 years in various PC's I've built (I am a PC repair tech). I have had very few failures considering the number of drives I've installed and I am really impressed with this line's speed and performance. Well, I couldn't afford a SSD so I decided to buy one of these. Other reviews say it is noisy. I've found that I can hear it if in a totally silent room. However, that is the exception to how I work. Usually, I'll have some music playing low in the background. I can't hear it unless I'm listening for it.The drive is faster than my WD 640 7200 rpm hd that came with my Mac Pro. I haven't done any side by side comparisons or tests like that. You can see the increase in speed even over the 7200.I've installed this as my boot drive only and will use the WD 640 as storage for now. I am planning to buy a second Velociraptor and configure a software RAID 0. Yes, I know "they" say NOT to have a RAID as a boot drive, but I've done it with my G4 MDD with excellent results. The speed increase is fantastic! Besides, I'll have a Time Machine backup.Overall, I'm very happy with this drive. I can buy two, configure a RAID 0, and have a sort of "poor man's SSD."**The other day I went to Best Buy to check out the MacBook Air with the SSD hd. I won't be buying another Velociraptor to configure in a RAID. SSD is the way to go!Still, I am very happy with the Velociraptor!

I installed this hard drive into my aging iMac and I can notice a big performance improvement. It is a little bit louder than the hard drive that came with my iMac (specifically you can hear the ticking sound when the hard drive is looking for data and you can hear it spinning), but it is still a worthwhile upgrade. It runs pretty cool - no heat problems whatsoever. Quite a noticeable improvement at startup speed and starting up apps.

I now have 2 of these. One I bought from Newegg, and one from here (Amazon). Installation was easy because my full tower case has HDD clips instead of screws (just slap them on each side of the HDD and slide it in; No major thought required). I got them on RAID 0, with a total of 558GB on a single array. I'm sad that I lost some 48GB due to default system allocation, but the performance of the RAID 0 makes up for it.I am a PC gamer, and now my games load even faster. Windows 7 boots in about 40 seconds while me old build needed a couple minutes to boot Windows XP. All Blizzard created maps in Starcraft 2 takes only 6 seconds to load, versus about half a minute on my old 7,200RPM HDD. I've had no problems with these drives and I am very pleased with their performance. These don't compete with the speeds of enthusiast-level SSDs, but they yield a lot more room for the price. I'll wait for the price of SSDs to be more wallet friendly.

Very impressive speed. Nearly 40% increase in RPM over the 7200 RPM drives is a significant improvement. The system start-up is noticeably faster. But the benefit to actual application programs varies. For example, programs that require small amount of data exchange will see minimal benefit. The speed of these programs is largely determined by the processor speed and RAM, because nearly everything is loaded into the RAM and not dependent much on the hard drive. On the other hand, applications like virus scanning which heavily depend on disk activity to access files will see the biggest benefit. I did a controlled test which showed that virus scanning is at least 30% faster with this disc than a 7200 RPM disk.Noise could be an issue. Anyone who claims this is quiet is probably used to noisy computing environments. If you have a quiet computer in a fairly quiet room, you hear this hard drive distinctively. I have an Antec 900 with all fans running at low speed. The case is quiet but by no means silent. In this environment, the velociraptor is audible, although not terribly noisy. The noise was a bit distracting in the beginning, but I got used to it gradually and will now have to listen intentionally to hear it. To be fair, this hard drive is actually quieter than most old hard drives. But the consumer-grade hard drives have improved so much in noise in the last five years that most of them have become near silent. This hard drive is noticeably noisier than some other new hard drives I've seen recently.Despite the slight noise, the hard drive is quite cool. My computer has a second hard drive (7200 RPM) in addition to this one. Both have very cool temperatures. The VelociRaptor is even 1Β° cooler. This is very impressive.To those who are concerned about the small storage capacity of this hard drive, I'd say, think in terms of your true needs, not numbers. I believe this hard drive is ideal as an active system drive in a computer that has multiple hard drives. In a two hard drive system, for example, the faster VelociRaptor can be the primary hard drive for running operating system and programs, and the second hard drive can be a regular large capacity drive for data and backup.For running the operating system and programs, 150 GB is more than enough. In fact, I would argue that any more gigabytes would be a waste for a system drive, both now and for the foreseeable future. If they're going to make this hard drive better as a system drive, I would recommend they make it cheaper, or even faster and quieter, but not larger. I have Windows 7 and tons of programs, which all together occupy only about 50 GB, making the VelociRaptor more than sufficient. In fact, I could have just got a much cheaper 74 GB Raptor and still be plenty happy.For your need of greater data storage capacity, just get a 1 TB drive as a dump drive to hold everything else including data and backup.All in all, I highly recommend this hard drive to anyone who is building a multiple hard drive system. There is no better choice for the primary operating system drive.

Speed and Performance is very impressive. I am using the 2 drives on an Windows XP Operating System in a RAID 0 environment. The overall speed of this computer has increased by 50%. Very impressive!

I've been using the Velociraptor hard drives since the 74gb version and have been happy with each upgrade (74gb, 150gb and 300gb). This drive is Awesome, I built a new PC but used a New WD Caviar Black 750gb drive. It was great, but I wanted Faster, picked up this Velociraptor for a few dollars more than the Black, world of difference. Now EVERYTHING snaps when you click on it, my games load immediately. I Like It. No problems at all.

As expected from Amazon.com. I received my shipment in fewer days than expected. Amazon's checkout process is nothing but the best and i have never had a problem with there business or service that they offer. The package arrive in a safe and nicely packaged box. The item i ordered worked just as describe and is lightning fast. WD Velociraptor drives are nothing but the best when it comes to Hard Drive. SSD's are still very nice but way too expensive at this time. I will always continue my business with Amazon. What I would do if Amazon started opening stores around the U.S. like Comp USA did!

This is my third VelociRaptor and I haven't had any problems with any of them. I have 2 in my main computer and installed this one in a client's computer for her OS. Has a great warranty and customer service is a good as any of them. If you are looking for a huge speed increase I don't think you will find much of a jump, but it's smooth and my Win 7 Intel quad core takes about 30 seconds to load from press of the button. Adobe CS4 works without a hitch and so does MS office. I don't do any gaming just web design, publishing and photography work. I also use a VelociRaptor 150 for my OS MS Home Server for all my PCs backup. No problems after 2 years.
