Bother in law said that this one works great, he already had the 4 gig one and it stopped while on vacation in Thailand, he asked me to bring him another one, since we were meeting up with him a few weeks later, but amazon only listed the 3 gig hard drive so i bought this one for him, no problems so far or at least he hasn't said anything.

This is a terrible product. Don't buy this is you plan on transferring big volumes of data and want a reliable ”wireless” hard drive. It lags, stops, keeps freezing trying to update the firmware and just disconnects at random even though it's right next to my setup. You'll spend more time scouring the web trying to find a solution to a problem than actually using the thing.

Today, the hard drive decided to delete all of my files completely for some reason. After spending countless hours trying to recover anything the hard drive just gave up. I gave it to my dog and he took it outside to bury.

I'm not one for negative reviews, but first impressions are important in the whole customer experience so here it goes. Connected to it directly via wifi for setup: cool, done, got the little dashboard in my browser. Connected it to my home wifi network: cool, done, got the little dashboard in my browser. So far so good. Connected to it via my home wifi network: cool, done, again I got the little dashboard in my browser. Total time elapsed since unboxing: maybe about 10mins. Again, so far so good.

NOW, lets see if my computer sees it as a storage device onto which I can put some files? Network>devices>Storage>Passport Pro...double click to open folder and plop some files in there. Opens the little dashboard in my browser. Click, Again. Click, again. No file folder into which I can drop files. Great. I bought this to store data and It won't let me store data, at least not over wifi. Super disappointing. Nearly hurl $280 CDN unit across the room. See glass half full. Maybe it's just the wifi thing is poorly planned out and executed. I bought it for the wireless connectivity and it doesn't do it, end of story, no point in farting around any further with that feature.

Lets try direct connection via USB, easy enough. Plug it in...No dice. Charges the drive battery, but doesn't see any of the 3TB as storage. Now, I can get a USB thumbdrive anywhere in the world for the equivalent of a dollar or a euro, plug it in, and it will register as storage on my computer. But Western Digital can't make a $240 portable hard drive that doesn't have some convoluted, labrynthine, byzantine, download-such-and-such-an-app (which by the way isn't the solution here, just a path to bloatware) way of connecting the POS to your computer or network. TV's and printers can connect to the network easily. If we still had VCR's, they would connect to the network. But a WD harddrive? That's just crazy! This is the second WD external HDD I've owned and the first was almost as irritating to use with the one plus being that it could actually be used.

Western Digital's UX and process design is awful. It reeks of engineers who are attempting to be human, but falling far short. Simple question for WD engineers: "Can your Mom use it, yes or no?" If no, return to drawing board. Points for effort, sure. But really, this isn't rocket surgery, turn the thing on, see it on the network, access it as storage. Done. This isn't even new technology.

I was so disappointed with this. In the product description it looked terrific. But it didn't do the primary thing it was designed to do. Full stop.

So, as a wireless HDD this fails. Maybe not for all (I don't own a Mac...), but at this point in the grand timeline of technology, little kids and grandmas should be able to use these things without having to consult IT. Save your money, buy one that doesn't have wifi, preferably not WD if you want to save your sanity too.

I think I will be returning this unit. I might put some rocks in the box too.

I bought Three of these... so far two of their batteries have failed and will not charge or play on battery power... I have flashlights that have lasted longer than these drives. especially when you consider how infrequently these drives have been used.

I will try an RMA but not holding out much hope really unhappy about this...

Update:

This drive does play Pex and it does a great job... Grand Kids streamed movies from cabin on a cruise ship two cabins away to a pair of Ipads worked perfectly I left it plugged in for the entire cruise... I have had the same success on airplanes... in an RV using a Roku and Apple TV box the apple box is the only device I have had a problem with...We played three different movies at the same time using Plex/roku stick and Roku 3 on a rainy crappy day in the Idaho Mountains... all of the movies are optimized for mobile which worked great but is a pain in the butt...

Had a little problem with shipping but as usual Amazon took care of the problem.

From what I can tell the majority of bad reviews seem to be rooted in the understanding of how to setup this drive, update it to latest firmware and media format (Optimized)... if you do all of that correctly this drive works like a champ plays the installed Plex Media Server great.

I recently took this device loaded with a selection of movies for kids and some for the grown ups on a Cruise... my grand kids cabin was two cabins away from the My passport drive and they where able to log into Plex with their Ipads and watch Kids movies while their parents did the same thing ,.. it was a cold windy day at sea and the cabin was the best place to hang for a couple hours...

I plugged the drive into Ac power and left it that way all week Accessing Music and videos from the Plex media server in both cabins... at one point we had 5 different devices access Plex from this great little wifi drive.

After the cruise we had a 4hr wait in LAX and I simply turned it on using the battery power for all to access as they wanted... it was really great to keep the kids occupied during the layover... once aboard the play I left the drive on in my carry on which was in the over head and the drive performed great.

I know that a lot of folks had problems and I can see how it might have been difficult... I ended up adding a wifi adapter to my desk top which makes using the drive much better than trying to use an Iphone to set the drive up... it can be done on an Iphone but much easier to use the WD software on the desktop, especially to install, configure and maintain the plex optimized files... I used the same PC that my Plex media server is installed on.

I had difficulty logging onto my home wifi nework... the way to go is to use a wifi enabled PC/laptop... using a wifi enabled PC allowed me to do everything including bridging to the internet to update the Plex meta files.

I love this drive it works great once set up adding new media is a bit clunky because of the need to optimize the files but once done it is great.

I used Plex, Handbrake and MCeBuddy to optimize the files all worked but MCebuddy worked best for me because it will drop the completed optimized files right on the My Passport drive as long as it is plugged into the network and accessible to MCEBuddy I still needed to connect to the PC/Plex(internet) to update the Plex library on the WD My passport drive to update/enable newly added media... this happens via the wifi nework... it all worked just like you are used to in Plex

I gave it five stars because it worked so well for my needs ...once setup

***I was not paid nor did I get any discount for this review.

This is an amazing portable backup drive. It combines an external HD, SD Card/USB Reader, Power Bank, Router, Bridge, and more! I use this to have a copy of all my photos on to free up space on my Laptop. I then have it on my network so that every night it is backup up to my NAS as well.

Pros:
3TB of storage
Has its own power so can be ran stand alone
Auto import of SD Cards/USB (caution, this will copy/move every file on the device, not just the photos)
Has both 2.4ghz/5ghz wifi
Can act as bridge
Can access the drive directly by just plugging in via USB
Can access through network
Has multimedia features (I haven't used any yet but cool options)
Can charge your cellphone from the USB port (which I have used several times now)
Can access device and all files via Mobile App

Cons:
Web GUI is pretty basic and doesn't allow viewing contents
Security is weak, no users and only password is the one on your Wifi so be aware of that
Not able to upgrade HD (I tried switch out for a SSHD but it failed to read)
I wish it had automated backup built in so it could backup up to NAS automatically (I had to manually write scripts on my NAS)
Automatic SD Card backup has failed me a few times costing me photo loss because I didn't verify they all transferred.
Its a large Lithium Ion battery caring around with you so be aware of temps

I just returned from a multi-week vacation where I used the My Passport to save a copy of photos from the two cameras I brought. It worked very well for that, but there were a couple of things I needed to understand before I became fully happy.

- When you insert an SD card, you must wait ten seconds or so until the disk activity light stops flashing - only then can you press the button to start copying (assuming you have not set the option to copy automatically/)
- Each time you do a copy, it creates a folder based on the import date - but by default that date is some time in 2016. To get it to set the current date, you have to connect to the My Passport using a web browser, from which it then inquires the date. You need do this only once. Even if you don't do this, the copied pictures keep their original dates, but having the import date so far off gets confusing.
- The manual says that files are deleted off the card after import, but in the current firmware there is an option to not do so. It is smart enough not to duplicate files.

The WiFi passthrough worked, though sometimes I had issues with initial connections. Unlike some "travel routers", you have no control over this feature other than choosing the access point.

I used the MyCloud app on iOS to view pictures. While the My Passport copies RAW files, the app won't show the embedded JPEG preview. You can, however, choose to send RAW files to another app that can handle them, or save them to the camera roll (iOS understands most RAW files now.) (Edit: January 24, 2017 - the app has been updated to allow viewing RAW files from many cameras, just not mine (yet)!)

Each time you do an import, it puts the imported files under a folder named for the brand/model of SD card you used. You can also have it back up photos from your phone/tablet automatically.

I don't quite understand why WD loads the disk with so many sample photos, videos and music tracks. What's the point of that? You can, of course, delete them.

I bought this back up drive primarily to use with my iPad Pro. I transitioned to an iPad for most of my work while I travel and found a big issue was accessing files while not on wi-fi, usually on long flights. Additionally, I often travel to obscure and remote places overseas with no or limited wi-fi. I often work in a group and we have no way of exchanging large files except to continuously swap a portable drive. This unit nicely solves ALL of my issues. Using the My Cloud app, I can open ANY file with a related app (not just photo/video files as some of the promotional material led me to believe) from the drive onto my iPad using the standard export method on iOS. I can also share the device with several workstations, potentially eliminating my file transfer bottleneck (I have tested this with my own machines and will do an update to this review if there are issues once I use this "live" with a mix of iPads, Macs and PCs). For anyone wishing to truly use their iPad Pro as a Pro machine and circumvent some of the dumb limitations Apple still has baked into iOS for file management, this is a perfect solution. My only wish is that it would work with iCloud Drive.

The drive is imminently portable at just 1.0lb. Its just slightly larger and heavier than a SuperDrive. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable and a small power brick (about the size of a 12w iPad charger).

Edit/Update: After a week of using this, I concur with some of the other reviewers about problems/issues with this device. I have my media in the format required by Plex to avoid transcoding, but I still have yet to get it to successfully stream media using Plex. I CAN, however, watch movies through the iPad version of the WD My Cloud app, so for me this is not a big deal. The connection to my iPad/iMac gets very buggy when I try to use Plex. It locked up the device and required a hard reboot to get going again. I didn't buy this for Plex Streaming, so I'm not too concerned. For use with my non-media files for productivity on my iPad Pro, I stand by my original review - it is outstanding. For media streaming USING PLEX, its a big disappointment - I wouldn't buy it if that is your main intended use. Perhaps there will be a fix in a future GUI/firmware update.

Edit/Update #2: The device I mentioned above stopped working and would lock up after about 30 minutes of use. All six blue lights on top of the unit would flash. I am happy to report that the second unit I received (over a week ago) has been put under heavy use and is working very well. The WD customer support team were really very helpful and understanding and were very quick to replace my drive. If you are having issues, send it back. Perhaps there was an issue with the first batch of drives?

Addendum: Turns out that Amazon.ca treats Canadians with less due care and attention compared to Amazon.com clients. Where the hard case for this unit is sold in the USA directly from WD for $19.99 USD (or $26.48 CDN), a third party from the USA is selling to Canadians for a ridiculous $127.50 CDN (or more than $100 CDN more than our American friends). It appears that WD is not international enough to have its own people in Canada? So they expect Canadians to pay for a hard case that is about 50% the price of the hard drive. What do they think we are, the Donald?

Original: I have not been a fan of WD for years based on experience with using them compared with Seagate and Buffalo products - which don't tend to freeze or lose connection with the PC when there is a sudden power out. However, this is the ONLY product currently that is a standard external hard drive and not an overpriced photo storage unit with zero GB of storage - that accepts an SD card directly and download automatically without the need of a computer. It may or may not work well - but it is set up for success as a camera file back up on the move. We will see if it works early next year in the bush. It came on time, well package and currently works normally ... for now. Now lets see how it performs in the elements.

Just a little miffed on this point, but much of the hype I saw on this wireless storage device centered on using it to edit RAW photo images on an iPad Pro. The RAW images that I transferred from my camera to the drive will not display on my iPad, defeating my whole purpose of purchasing the drive. I really hope I am wrong about this.
UPDATE: After many frustrating hours trying to get this gadget to work with LumaFusion and some other apps, I reached Quantum Frustration Meltdown (QFM), packed it up and sent it back to Amazon. Life is too short........
It worked fine with the SD card download and would display all the files and appropriate thumbnails ON MY PC, although the interface app for Windows was unusable. Had to work off of the Drive Window that pops up when you hook up the drive. No such luck with my iPhone 7 or iPad Pro. My first SD download would occasionally show up in LF but the next two displayed no thumbnails. The same story for a 70 GB photo archive folder I put on the drive.
Maybe I got a dud. I wanted to like this drive. I read/watched numerous reviews that extolled it’s virtues as the absolute best option for external storage for iOS devices and how well it would interface with iOS apps. Should you decide to purchase one of these gizmos, I truly hope your experience is better than mine.

I bought this to replace a faulty Seagate wireless plus which I had used for about 4 years. I liked the Seagate Wireless plus enough that when it stopped working I thought it might be the battery, replaced it and still it did not work. So I started to look for a replacement. There are not a lot of replacement options, in fact I found I was dealing with older almost discontinued items. I had a hard time finding a replacement Seagate unit so I started to look at the WD My Passport Wireless Pro (mouthful!). The more I learned the more I was interested. My main usage need is to be able to stream video content for my small kids - we travel a lot - it seems not many have this need anymore with devices having more storage and I guess all the streaming options now and internet access everywhere. Anyway I do find it handy to have my own solution especially when overseas.
The Wireless Pro will probably end up a better solution for me than the Seageate Wireless. I really like the fact that I can use Plex on it. For those that are not aware, Plex is a very good User Interface to help you with your digital content, Netflix for the home user I guess. Both Plex and unfortunately the Wireless Pro take a bit of getting used to in setting up. For me Plex was easy as it sets up on the Wireless Pro as it does anywhere else, once learned you are good to go, I suggest an internet search on how to configure your video content, it is worth figuring out. For the Wireless Pro I suggest you load your video content into some basic folders (plug it into your PC or Mac and treat it as a external HDD) like TV with subfolders for Show and subfolders again for Season, within the Season subfolder label each episode with Showname SXXEXX - Episode name. Where "SXX is season 01 for example and EXX is episode 01 etc...) if you label your tv content like this then Plex will easily pick it up. For movies you can have a separate folder labeled "Movies" and then just add your content. If you have children's content you can set that up separately and then with Plex you can set up different users and restrict what each user can watch. So you can keep your content separate from your kids. Anyway got off on tangent here but I really like Plex - I use it for my home theater content...

I have a lot of content on the Wireless Pro and with Plex it works great. Given others' comments about 1080p and higher resolutions streaming poorly I just loaded up my unit with 720p stuff mostly and it works fine, I would expect it to work ok at higher resolution because my setup now is pretty snappy but I have not tried and mostly I am streaming to ipads, android devices and smallish TVs so the higher resolution is not needed

I figure i will also use the device to store home video data we accumulate while travelling but as yet I have not.

I am happy with my purchase, I would suggest if you buy, give yourself a few days of sorting out how to configure the device and also Plex if you are new to it, both should be worth it...
