I did tons of research before I bought this drive, I needed it because I wanted to first format my work PC, and also to backup about 10K pictures.Nice thing is that its spacious enough, and it look very sharp, no external power needed, and the transfer speed is great..I moved about 7GB in about 14min or something like that..I bought two of them and both arrived as new never opened..Regarding the black shiney color, Yes you might see ur finger prints on it, but not that easy if you ate something greasy yes :)Its great drive, if you are looking for mid size drive get this one..

The reason why I got this item was because I needed to backup my PS3 data, since I'm upgrading the hard drive on the system. As soon as I opened it, I just plugged it in and that's all. No need to install software or anything. I was surprised at how small and light this drive is and it was nice to have something so simple to use. Perfect for what I needed it. This thing took about 30min to copy about 20G of data which, and I'll be honest, I'm not sure if its good or bad, but there you go.

So I bought this hard drive to transfer songs from my ipod. My ipod doing as it does wasn't holding a charge anymore, but anyway back to the hard drive.. the transfer rate was really fast!!I have been really happy with all of this external bussiness!!So I transfered my songs and have transfered many programs on and off of my external. I use it for my external for my xbox to!!4 thumbs up!!

I have to rate the Passport zero stars. It's a pretty little drive but it doesn't work. I have a WinXP system. The passport drive was not recognized. The light came on but I couldn't hear the drive spin. I read about people getting a dual USB cable for more power so I got one of those. Same result. The light comes on and nothing. (My USB ports work fine for my camera.) I have bought WD internal desktop drives for at least 10 years and no problems. Passport is junk, at least mine is. It has never worked. I live in a foreign country and the shipping would be too expensive to send back. Don't waste your money.

Very happy with the use of this.Able to keep important data with me.Accidentally fell once about 2 feet onto carpet, and still works.Only grouse, the shape of the molding around data port does not allow one of my cables (blackberry) to work properly.

Bought for my husband for christmas. He needed one of these portable harddrives. It's very compact, nice looking with it's piano finish look, and good quality. Great price for this device. Worth every cent.

I received this as a Christmas gift, and none of my laptops will even recognize it. So I wouldn't trust it to back up my files even if I could somehow get it recognized. Now that I'm reading the other one-star reviews, I see that it has power issues. I won't be buying anything from this manufacturer.

I really like the stylistic aspects of this hard drive. It is small enough to take anywhere you want to take it. The drive itself is very easy to use. It does have a significant weakness and that is the fact that it solely depends on the usb port for its power source. My laptop could not actually handle the power that the passport hard drive required and I kept getting an error message about a power surge. I fixed that problem by buying a powered usb hub to plug into my computer and then connected the portable hard drive to my laptop that way. That is my one complaint about the portable hard drive, but it was a simple fix that added about $25 dollars to what I spent on the hard drive itself.

There were no instructions provided. I bought the Passport to transfer data from my PC to my iMac. Without instructions I did not know that the Passport has to be formatted on the iMac first. Not user friendly.

It's always nice when something works the way you expect it to, with no esoteric drivers or configuration problems. It's a breeze to pop the drive in your pocket and have 160GB of quick, portable HD space. Much faster than a flashdrive.If I were to say anything bad, it would be that the drive came formatted FAT32, requiring an immediate reformat to NTFS.

Needed an external drive for backup purposes.Searched, read reviews, selected this one.I ordered, it came in a timely fashion and in good condition.Worked as advertised.Plug and Play.No techie skills required.I did need to make some changes to be able to backup entire system, but instructions were available and easily followed.

The product is good, very easy to use, just plug in and work on my two laptops. I don't have to eject it and it won't corrupt data while other drive will complain or lost data. The only thing I am not quite happy is the sync program is not easy to work with, but I don't use it often. The price is good for a 160G version, since this is what I need. I don't need a 1T version may be it is relatively cheaper. No power supply need is one of the most convenience things this product provide. The speed is fast, I would say for most of the photo copy work.

Product arrived on time and well packaged. Am currently using it exclusively as a Time Machine destination drive for a MacBook laptop. Easy to use (plug and play) but required complete erasure to be configured properly for Time Machine so you'll need to migrate the preloaded software first or you will lose it. The bundled software was Windoze compatible only so I didn't mind losing it.Portability and reliability make up for near glacial speed of the USB connection. Allow several hours for the first backup; my 45GB back up took about 10 hours to complete.

The WD Passport Essential is a fine portable hard drive, but it does NOT work on the Mac PowerBook G4, regardless of the stated specs.To all Mac PowerBook G4 Users: The G4 doesn't have enough power in the USB port to power an external hard drive. You must purchase an external hard drive that connects through FireWire or has an external power source. I prefer the LaCie Little Disk with FireWire.Thank you, Amazon, for the easy return.

I removed the software and manually manage all my files for this hard drive. I use it as a main drive for my music and photos. The small size is great for throwing in my purse or pocket as I take it with me all the time to rip music for my friends' computers.

Product needed some set up from their technical support department. Once set up its as easy as copy and paste. Qucik delivery and no issues to speak of, other then needing the original tech support to get it going.
