The drives have horrible reliability. In 18 years of working with computer hardware, I've never laid my hands on such bad hardware. They work fine for about 4 months before they start going downhill. Depending on where you purchased these drives from, these conveniently fail soon after "full refund" time limit expires. The problems range from bad sectors, high reallocated sector counts, pending bad sectors, hardware I/O timeouts, corrupted data, and just plain buzzing death noises.I originally purchased 3 drives. After 4 months of use, 2 showed signs of dying but not quite dead. Contacted Western Digital for an RMA replacements. The 1st replacement lasted 12 hours before completely dying and only is making buzzing noises (other replacement is on its way). Western Digital is now replacing the dead replacement drive. The 3rd drive I originally purchased is being returned to the store because I expect it to die in a couple months as well. In short, 3 out of 4 of these drives have failed for me.A friend of mine also bought the same size and model of drives. 1 out of 2 died (Western Digital replaced the dead drive, so far the replacement is still working).I recommend staying away from these drives.

I didn't purchase this drive for a number of weeks largely because of all the negative packaging & DOA feedback. I can say that I am perfectly happy with my purchase in the end and everything was perfect.A LOT of reviewers have bashed this product based upon improper packaging. I can assure you that I just received mine today (3/16/2010) and it was packaged with the exact same "wings" the a retail drive comes in. It was also in a box that fit perfectly and had virtually no excess movement. My guess would be Amazon has seen the many complaints about improper packaging of OEM hard drives and have taken steps to correct this. This is just a guess, but I believe fairly sound as mine arrived in perfect shape. This drive isn't the speediest but it is fairly priced and has a large amount of capacity. I am currently using a few of these in a Virtual Machine NAS box inside VMWare ESXi4. They provide low power consumption, and decent enough performance for a home server streaming media to a few systems (Windows, Mac, iPhone, & a couple PS3's.) The heat isn't too bad but I would recommend picking up a cooler or backplane (especially if using multiple drives) for added longevity.

My Amazon order was shipped from Pensacola General Supply - very, very quickly. The Western Digital drives both died almost immediately after spin-up. Google reveals MOST of these drives are failing and Western Digital is telling folks replacements won't be available until the end of September - though they have many new faulty drives remaining for sale. Likewise, my drive return experience with Western Digital have almost never been positive - and generally in my being shipped "refurbished drives" - rather than the new drives I had purchased.

I've been purchasing (1 & 2 TB) WD green drives through Amazon for some time now for my Drobos and have been very satisfied with their performance and speed. There is a slight performance hit if the drive is accessed when the drives have spun down but that's the whole point of the green drive is to save on power consumption while keeping the internal temp low. What forced me to provide this review was the poor packaging for this drive. This OEM drive is part of the Amazon Frustration Free packaging program. Every green drive I purchased in the past had the OEM drive in its anti-static wrap, wrapped in bubble wrap, then enclosed in a small box that is lined with egg crate foam. That box is then in another box with air pads. This was fine for me as there is very little free movement for the drive and I've had no physical problems with the drives. What's wrong now, and you'll find several reviews siting similar situations, is that there is no egg foam box. All it is is a small box, with two air pads, and the drive in a single layer bubble wrap. The drive is loose and free to bang up against the box. The box suffered a little damage on one corner, either due to having something heavy stacked or from a fall.I'm no expert -- maybe it's perfectly fine to ship it this way, but the tech geek in me is having a difficult time with this. The drive is going into the drobo, so if it does fail I'm not overly worried. If it does, it's difficult to ignore the poor packaging as having a hand in the cause.

You cannot pack hard drives floating in a box. This is not acceptable and I will probably return because I don't trust the reliability of the product now.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents.I have used this drive in more build than I can count.I think i've used at least 90 or so drives in the last few months maybe two have failed. I really like these drives and if power and cool computing is an issue for your next build, put these at the top of your list.

I now own two of these and use them in my Drobo as backup drives. So performance isn't as big of an issue and it made sense to go with a lower power drive as these aren't needed 24x7, only when Time Machine runs on my Mac. I have had no issues with them. One drive is about a year old, and another one is about two months old now.The second drive came in Amazon's frustration free packaging and was more frustration oriented. The first shipment, it wasn't even a 2GB drive. It was a 640MB drive. The second shipment, the drive was lose in the box and the drive was DOA. Third time was the charm.Of course Amazon was very quick at replacing them, but it was quite annoying. Had I shipped a drive for warranty the way they did it'd be a door stop with no warranty.

Purchased two Western Digital 2tb SATA Green internal hard drives in March 2010. One of them just failed after 3 mos of use. Fortunately the two hard drives were in a RAID 1 configuration inside of a Synology DS209 server so no data was lost...yet. In the process of doing an RMA for the defective hard drive. Three months for a hard drive failure for a server that is not moved....ever..... is not a very good track record. Hope this model is not a lemon.

The drive was installed in a PC running Windows 7 beta, then Windows 7 full version. The PC was used as a media computer, playing movies and TV shows through Windows Media Center, and Apple TV. As stated in the title of this review, the drive failed within 9 months. The good news is the drive failure warning kicked in and allowed me to move the data to another drive. This will be my last Western Digital purchase. I've had nothing but problems over the years with their drives. The low price of this drive prompted me to give WD another chance. Never again. My future HD purchases will be Seagate.

This is a very fine disk drive from the highest quality drive maker. I bought 2 to hold my ever-growing load of photos and videos which had filled up a pair of 500 GB drives. The WD20EADS has huge capacity, it's quiet, it runs cool (so it should last longer) and most surprising, it's faster than my 500 GB drive. With the new drive, the time it takes to convert RAW photos to JPG format dropped by 12%. This is probably due to the large 32MB cache. Some things to watch out for:The great price on Amazon is partly because the drive is in OEM packaging, which means all you get is the drive - no cables, no instructions, no installation CD. Many vendors sell drives this way, this isn't anything unusual. If you have installed OEM drives before, then you know the routine and it's not a problem. If you need the instructions or installation software, you can download it from the Western Digital support site.If you are wanting to install this drive in an older motherboard - beware! It didn't work in my Gigabyte GA-7NNXP running F15 BIOS (latest) and Silicon Image firmware 4.2.00 (which is only 84 revs out of date and not upgradable). The BIOS hung during initialization of the Silicon Image SATA controller and there doesn't seem to be any workaround or update possible. On the other hand, it worked fine in my wife's Elite Group KT-600A motherboard, which is slightly older and less sophisticated than the Gigabyte board. The Gigabyte board was running 500 GB drives on the SATA ports without a problem, and there are no general size limitations between 500 GB and 2 TB. It appears that the BIOS is just buggy. The Western Digital support site has a list of tested compatible SATA controllers, so if your board is on that list you should be good to go. If your board isn't on the list, you might want to search the net for information on your particular board before you buy.

I have three of these drives and they were all easy to install and are performing well. One is in the Windows Home Server as part of my storage pool, and the other two are in USB external enclosures. I rotate the two drives, keeping one at home and one off site and I use them to back up my shared folders and now my WHS database using a third party plug-in.The drives installed in about 5 minutes. It always takes me another five minutes to remember that I have to partition the drive so that the Windows Home Server will recognize it. In Windows Server 2003, you do that by doing the following:Run remote desktop to connect to the WHS. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management. In the console tree, click Disk Management. From there you can select the disk and partition it. Then WHS will recognize it as a new drive. This sounds harder than it is, just remember the drives are bare when you get them.I'm sure in a five years I'll be amazed to find this review and think that I paid $199 for a 2tb drive, but today it feels like a good price and is giving me great piece of mind as I've been able to back up all my machines every day with the Windows Home Server.

I was forced to get a second drive when the disk on my 1 year old PC is 90% full. Shooting 15M pixel digital photos in RAW format takes up lots of disk space. I need a single large drive to hold all photos for the next few years. This is the consumer version that includes a SATA cable. The OEM version Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD20EADS is only a bare drive. Unless you need handholding, the OEM version may be a better buy. The only reason I got this one was that it was on sale at Best Buy for the still expensive early adaptor price of $[...]. Unless you have an immediate need, wait a few month for the price to drop. The drive mounts easily with the included screws. Due to the non-standard sideway disk cage of my Gateway PC, I have to cut off the useless stub on the cable in order to close the cover. Although my Vista PC refused to install the software from the included CD, Vista's tool works just as well. Formatting such a huge drive is an overnight operation. Copying files from the old drive takes another few hours. After nearly 2 months of use, the disk worked flawlessly and quietly. It is fast enough as a second data only drive. As for the claim of low power, I have no way of measuring it.As I wrote earlier, the consumer version includes the SATA cable with the funny stub, 4 screws, a software CD that cannot be installed on Vista, and some instructions that you can download from Western Digital. Whether you should spend the extra dollars over the OEM version is up to you. This drive deserves a 5-star rating, except for its high initial price. If you have room in your PC, getting 2 Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD10EADS is cost saving alternative.

I bought this to replace an old WD Green 500GB drive, used strictly for Acronis backup images. It's housed in an Antec MX-1 external SATA enclosure and works great. I took it out of the package, installed it into the MX-1, had Windows 7 initialize it, create a single partition(1.8TB available with default block size on NTFS) and format it. I then changed the storage location on my Acronis tasks and that's it! No problem whatsoever! Runs nice and quiet an cool. Especially in the fan driven MX-1 enclosure.I'm pretty darn impressed with it's performance as well. For being a 5400RPM drive, it's pretty peppy. I haven't yet run a synthetic benchmark(i.e. HD Tune), but I did some test copies to and from this drive and in comparison to a WD Black 1tb I also have in an external enclosure, I really don't notice any difference. I'm sure there would be a difference for someone doing heavy video editing, but for backup and typical use, it's performance is more than acceptable.Highly Recommended!

The drive was good until after 6 months when I was checking the drive using Disk Utilities using my Mac. It was failing the S.M.A.R.T. status. This could lead to a crash of the drive. Good thing it was still running and am able to backup all my files. The drive has a 3 year warranty fortunately.WD replaced the drive of the same type by mail thru their replacement program. It looks like the warranty only lasts 1 year since the manufacture date, and I only got 6 months to go. I'll recheck with WD. I think they should match the warranty time of my original drive which was 3 years.

Great drives... if they work. I just recieved them and haven't even tried them yet, but I'm so angry about the way they were packaged I just had to say something while I'm still willing to bother to post this review. I will update it they work or if they need to go back.Just save yourself the headache if you need drives and get them from [...]Each drive was in a loose single wrap of bubble wrap and a single air cushion. Neither was enough to keep them from flopping around loosely within the smaller box. Then each of those boxes were loosely packaged within a larger box with a couple of air cushions... two of which were popped by the time they made it me. Anyway, they were free to flop around in their own boxes and those boxes were free to flop around inside a larger shipping box.Great drives... just don't get them from Amazon.

I'll be honest and say that I spent 30 hours considering the pros and cons of getting this 2TB WD Green drive versus a Seagate 1.5TB (with reports of firmware failures) or paying way more for a 2TB WD RE4 Enterprise class, which is unavailable at Amazon as far as I know.So far the facts: Compared to my 4 other 500GB WD Caviar Black drives, its temperature, even after copying 1.5TB of data to it is 10-15 degrees cooler than the other drives in idle state. Despite having a variable speed - that is not quite 5400rpm and not quite 7200rpm, I have enjoyed 85.91MB/s write rates and 88.55MB/s reads. This was a OSX/Finder test to and from a RAM Disk with 2000MB/s capacity. Also great to know: This drive is very quiet and I am glad that it will not add noise when I am recording vocals or quiet instruments in compositions.I am entrusting my data to this drive for the next few years, so even though there are cheaper 1.5TB solutions out there, there have been reports of failing drives in comparison to this. Also, I saved $45 buying from Amazon, including 1 day shipping, in comparison to Fry's Electronics.Note: Capacity when formatted with Mac OSX HFS+ Extended (Journaled) is 1.8TB. This is to be expected from the disparity of how all hard disk manufacturers promote their drives and how operating systems actually address them.

A lot of reviews here are complaining about DOA units due to poor packaging. I just got this drive yesterday and the packaging was perfectly adequate. It came in a standard OEM hard drive shipping package. It's sparse packaging but it was certainly enough to keep the drive safe.I don't know if Amazon improved their packaging, or people think they should pack the box with padding, but the drive I got yesterday was just fine. Bubble wrap around the drive and some air pillows inside (not all inflated or maybe some deflated). But the drive appears to be fine so I guess it's all good. Plugged it into my Drobo unit, didn't have to deal with any jumpers, just slid it right in and it took maybe two days to redistribute my data but now it's running well. It replaced a 750GB Seagate so we'll see how it will be in the long run.
