Ninety-five percent of my hard drives are Western Digital. In my 20 years of computing, I have only had one 2.5" hard drive fail on me. Until I recently got rid of it, I was still using a 1992-era 20MB hard drive that had thousands and thousands of hours on it. That certainly doesn't mean that others haven't experienced bad results with some Western Digital products, but it definitely has created confidence in me.I purchased two of these to populate my Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4 since they were on the Netgear ReadyNAS Hardware Compatibility List. They run quiet and cool: My ReadyNAS fan never increases from its lowest speed while in use. I regularly get 45-50MBps transfer speed when performing backups over a gigabit LAN. I realize that transfer speeds are affected by many things, but they also indicate the capability of the hard drive being written to.One drive arrived with some read errors. After performing a format and overwrite using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition (free from Cnet's Windows software download website), I experienced no further problems. This drive does, however, exhibit one problem while running in the ReadyNAS. Because it's a "green" drive, it is designed to idle park the read head after a very short period of time. When used in a ReadyNAS, the Load Cycle Count can quickly reach tens of or hundreds of thousands of cycles in a rather short period of time. Because the drive is certified only to a certain Load Cycle Count (750,000 if I read Western Digital's documentation correctly), this idle park problem could result in premature failure. The Netgear ReadyNAS forums have some workarounds for those determined. One of the drives suffered a SMART failure (reallocated sector count) after two years of use. The exchange with Western Digital was painless (except for having to pay for return postage.) I love the long warranty, and since I purchased them with my American Express, the credit card company automatically adds an additional year to the warranty period. Can't beat that!

I had two of this in my Synology NAS. The first drive started having error after 6 months and it was replaced by warranty, then the 2nd one died just 2 months after the warranty expired. I only use WD HDD and I only had bad experience with the so call β€œGreen Drive”. I bought another newer version of the WD green for a single drive NAS and it also failed after a year and was replaced by warranty, very unreliable and it’s totally not worth trying.

The 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green disks are perhaps the worst disks that have ever been produced. I purchased 4 of these disks for my NAS box and all 4 of the disks failed. And each time a disk would fail I would return it under warranty and receive a new disk. And two of these new disks failed. From my perspective this was the worst batch of disks that have ever been produced anywhere, anytime. Avoid them at all cost.

Due to their low cost and availability, I've purchased numerous Western Digital Caviar drives over the past 15 years or so. They have always left a bad taste in my mouth. Some have died just outside the 1yr warranty period. Two of them were put into a Raid0 configuration, one drive hiccuped, and I lost the entire array and all data on the drives. I then put them into a Raid1 (redundant) and they eventually became disconnected with 2 different drive letters, while still redundantly updating. Weird. Could probably blame the Raid controller on my brand new motherboard, as the drives have been fine since. Though I have not run them in RAID since then.So I wanted 4 drives to put into my DNS-343 4-bay NAS. I wanted to max it out, and the only 2TB drive DLINK recommended was the WD20EADS drive. With no other choice, I gritted my teeth and ordered 4 of them. Before subjecting them to the 20+ hr RAID 5 setup process in the NAS, I hooked them up to my desktop and ran the LifeGuard software Extended Test on each of them. 3 passed, 1 failed. Selected the "Fix sector" option, but it failed AND generated a nice windows hard-drive failure box. Then tried using LifeGuard to write zeroes to the failed drive, but after a few minutes it too failed. So now I'm going through the RMA process to send back the bad drive to goharddrive.com, at my expense. Yea.Thanks, Western Digital, for burning me yet again. And no, I don't feel a 75% success rate is acceptable.

I purchased two of these for my new system and was thoroughly disappointed. The first drive failed within six months, and the other failed just after two years. I have tried many different hard drive manufacturers over the years, and have seen little difference in reliability among the "top" manufacturers, despite what the exceptional advertising from these companies will tell you.

My purchase [Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB SATA II 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Internal Desktop Hard Drive - WD20EADS (Bought 08/04/2011)] was exactly what I needed for a data storage drive. I knew from research that my computer would have problems with the new WD20EARS version; this EADS version was just what I needed at a reasonable price. It arrived unbelievably quickly, installed easily, and works great. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I have a total of seven of these drives. Two have failed within the first month of use, after I spent days migrating all of my data over to these new high-capacity drives. Both were connected externally via eSATA (externally rather than internally), but this may not necessarily be relevant because a cursory Google search on this issue led me to complaints by numerous other users who also have experienced failures with these drives. It seems that the "Green" feature involves more complicated mechanics and electronics in these units, which are a weak link and make the drives more susceptible to failure.I bought these because I have always understood Western Digital to be a top name in hard drives. I was also aware of the scandal with many of Seagate's high-capacity drives failing last year.So it seems that the top two names (in my opinion) of hard drive manufacturing have been having serious reliability issues with their high capacity drives. This is totally unacceptable and I have been losing (and continue to lose) countless hours of time having to research and buy NEW replacement drives, perform data migrations (which take around 24 hours each with these capacities), erasing old drives and dealing with returns to vendors like Amazon, etc. Thankfully Amazon and one other top vendor I use have issued me RMA's and free UPS return labels with ZERO hassle.I just purchased five of the new Hitachi 7200RPM internal 2TB drives and am again migrating all my data from the WD's to the Hitachis. I am not sure if the Hitachi's will prove any more reliable, but so far I have not seen any REPORTS of massive failures on these, so they seem like the best choice (gamble?) for me at the moment. The Hitachi drives are much louder (you can hear the really annoying "crunching" sound when the drives are writing data) but I'm at the end of my rope and will suffer through this in order to at least have a 2TB drive that I'm not terrified might CRASH at any moment causing me to lose a lifetime of accumulated data. They're currently a bit cheaper, too.So zero stars for Western Digital "Green" drives, but five stars for Amazon.com customer service.

I bought 5 of these for my server and they have been running pretty much non-stop since march 2011. I had no problems until early May 2011 when one of the hard drives failed. I contacted the seller and they sent me an RMA with a pre-paid postage to send it back. Once I shipped the hard drive back I got a new one in a matter of days! The hard drives are all good so far and the customer service was great. I highly recommend this seller and this product.

Hello, I bought this drive to use in my desktop as a back-up drive. Once I plugged in the drive my system (XP Pro) recognized it. The drive was formatted and info from the old drive was transferred. The drive has been running 24/7 for about two weeks now. Because my desktop has been beefed up with added fans it is impossible to hear the hard drive which is good. So far I have had good luck with WD Caviar Black 1TB drives so I do not expect any issues with this drive.

When I bought a home server, I wanted to add an additional 2TB hard drive to match the existing hard drive in the machine. After searching I found a compatible drive with the same characteristics. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. I've pretty much always used WD hard drives and have had no difficulties with them. Why change now?The product arrived quicker than I expected, and I am happy with the results.

This is an update to the review below. After my review below, the company worked VERY hard to make me happy by not only sending me a new drive, but also upgrading the drive from the WD Green Label equivalent to the WD Black Label equivalent (WD2001FASS). So, I have to give them kudos for customer service. However, I ordered the drive in April of 2010 and it has now failed in February of 2011. Hopefully they will be as helpful in RMAing the drive a second time, too bad I lost a lot of data. Luckily it's all replaceable. Oh, and my two WD2001FASS's continue to run great, without any issues...So, I received my drive today and it is called "White Label". It looks like the exact same drive with the WD sticker replaced by another brand (MediaMax) sticker. Odds are, the drive was purchased in bulk, as overstock, and/or for a pre-built system. It may not have been meant for individual sale. I am a little more than miffed by this, because I purchased a Western Digital drive. Is the drive the same? Maybe. Are the specs the same? Yes. Is the warranty the same? NOPE!!! The advertised warranty is 3 years. The warranty listed on the packing slip is 1 year. Not only that, but the packaging was a joke. I've been building and repairing PC's professionally for 15 years and have NEVER seen a brand new HDD (or even a used one) packed so poorly. I think that I am lucky though, because mine was packed better than what I've read in other reviews. I'm hoping this drive works well, but we'll see...I'll post more after I've had it for awhile. The drive failed and I had to RMA. They shipped me the next model up, though, in an effort to keep me happy. I have to say, great customer service, but time will tell on the drive.

UPDATE: The replacement drive looked good initially but failed within 24 hours. It passed WD's extended test but failed the quick test, apparently due to bad sectors. Amazon refunded my payment, though I would have tried a third drive if given the option. So, I went to a local computer store and paid $30 more for same drive (with documentation and mounting screws). The new drive is performing perfectly.Given that experience, the problem seems to be damage in transit, even though packing materials show no stress or damage. The first drive was packed in a box inside a larger box, protected by a modest amount of air pillow. The second drive was packed in a single box with air pillow and didn't seem to me to be appropriately protected, even though an affixed sticker claimed it was ready for shipment as-is. My guess is that, in both cases, the drive was able to shift during shipment and make hard contact with a box edge, causing internal damage. Conclusion: Don't buy this drive from Amazon, despite their excellent service, unless it's clear that the drive is being packed better than it has been. How you would determine this, I don't know. :(ORIGINAL REVIEW: Drive was not elaborately packaged but was not visibly stressed or damaged. No instructions or documentation included but these were readily available on the web. After initial configuration, drive disappeared from Explorer and Disk Manager. Rebooted the system (Windows XP) and all seemed well. About 10 hours later, drive disappeared again. System would not fully boot with drive in place.Checked and swapped SATA cables, checked BIOS settings, and checked jumpers. Experimented a bit with other plausible configurations. No go.Replaced drive with old drive and reset BIOS configuration. System operates fine. Conclusion: bad drive, probably due to manufacturing flaw rather than damage during shipment.I really want to like the drive, so I've opted for an exchange. Will revise review if replacement unit works as it should.

Based on other reviews on this site I decided to purchase this. I saw one particular review that said it didn't include the SATA cable, but I figured it wouldn't be a big deal anyways because I would purchase that separately. Afterall, how do they know what length you need? I do suppose they could include a 6" cable or something, but they're also trying to keep the product price down while catering to the masses. However, it didn't include any mounting screws! I didn't see this in ANY other reviews. How could they not provide you with 4 mounting screws that would cost not even $.10?My packaging was sufficient. The drive was in a sealed anti-static bag and wrapped with bubble wrap. The contents were then wrapped with an inflatable air bag on the top and side portions (not the underside though). But as long as it was covered with bubble wrap and an air bag I was fine with it. (Not many realize the drive parking feature of HD's)This is also the same product as "Western Digital 2TB SATA Green Power eco-friendly Hard Drive WD20000CSRTL" on Amazon.com found at: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Green-eco-friendly-WD20000CSRTL/dp/B0020CT002/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265071405&sr=1-2Maybe the other one includes mounting screws? (I noticed someone reviewed it and it included the SATA cable!)Anyways, all-in-all a good price for the product. I just have to cover some loose ends that it's unclear about in the product description (no cable, no mounting screws).Hope this helps!

THE PACKAGING WAS HORRIBLE. The drive comes in an anti static box, then it was inside a single and thin bubble wrap bag surrounded by two LOOSE air bags, all of this was inside a small box, that luckily was stabilized by the surrounding air bags and the other items, but the drive was moving loosely inside it's small box. I suppose that adding a third air bag or more bubble wrap would be better. In other online stores the hard disks are shipped with double bubble wrapping so it looks like a small ball.As of this moment I'm using this hard drive (2.0TB WD20EADS) in my main computer, a venerable desktop almost 7 years old. It works great using an old Silicon Image 3112 SATA controller, mine came onboard in the Abit NF7-S 2.0 motherboard, and its firmware was updated a few months ago.For now, the hard drive is working great, the temperature reading is of about 37Β°C on average, read and write speed are at about 80MB/s on average (I added a jumper to limit the PHY to 1.5Gbps to match the SiI3112 controller).I'm consolidating all my data into this drive, before that, I had all my files distributed between three internal hard disks and a couple of externals, without using LVM, so it was a mess. This time I have created an LVM setup to let it grow adding more drives when the 2.0TB are filled up.I'm also running badblocks (Linux's scandisk) in increments of 100GB at a time, so far everything is all right, I will run a S.M.A.R.T. long test this night.
