DO NOT BUY THIS
I did my first transfer of over 5k of songs and 5k pictures. It took only a just couple minutes. This is a 2TB storage external hard drive with no moving parts. It is like using a thumb drive. It is so easy to drag and drop the files on to it. It will take me forever to fill 2TB. This is the best external hard drive I have ever had. I don't have to find a power cable to use it and then plug a data transfer cable. It is so easy to use and it is small enough you can take it with you anywhere and transfer data to it. If you are looking for a compact external hard drive, this is the one. It is waterproof, scratch proof, shockproof, so I don't have to panic if one of my grandkids picks it up. It is a good price for the amount of storage and protection you get for the case. jw
Luckily, there is a simple solution to this: plug the drive in faster. Yep, that's all. Stupidly, some drives when plugged in "too slow" are read as USB 2.0 instead of 3.0.

I use them both for the exact same purpose: storing photos and working with the files in Lightroom. In a direct comparion (same computer, same input ports, same files, same version of Lightroom), let's just say I've seen handwriting faster than how efficient this drive is at reading/writing files.
The exact same batch of photos took over an hour to import from this drive, versus only about 5 minutes from the Transcend. I tried it again with another group of photos and had similar results.
This drive claims to be the same speed as the Transcend (USB 3.1 / 5 Gbps transfer), but either that's a marketing lie, or there is something seriously wrong with this particular version of the drive. Exporting is no better. As I'm writing this, I'm on the 40 minute mark for exporting 100 photos from Lightroom. That level of read/write speeds is absolutely unacceptable.
I can't speak for reliability because ultimately I'm going to cut my losses and purchase another Transcend.
Housing is nice, took it apart to see the drive and USB interface. Just be warned, this will be a hit or miss purchase. Some reviewers were very lucky with this drive, others, like me, were not.
I bought three hard drives from this brand to copy my photos, movies, etc.
Unfortunately, I found that all SP HDD are very slow to read and write compared to other brands.
One of the SP HDD died without cause.
In short, if you don't want to risk losing your data, memories, time and money, stay away from this brand as if you were running away from the lion.
I wouldn't buy one again and wouldn't recommend it.
Read/write speed is sufficient; right now, I have 11 virtual machines on this drive, and I can run three at a time, networked together or separately, without having to copy anything back to my computer.
If anything unexpected happens, I will update this review.
Set-up on the Xbox is SUPER EASY. Just plug it into the USB slot on the back and the Xbox will automatically read it and ask you whether to format it for media or games. Once you choose games, it's a two minute process and then you're good to go! Set-up takes over about .3 TB of the hard drive, so you end up with 1.7TB leftover out of the 2TB advertised (just as an FYI).
First, the shipping was quick even though it is not a Prime item. Tracking code was sent and item arrived promptly. Packaged well. Only thing is missing manual/warranty, but easy to format to exFAT and use. Love the non-slip strips on the bottom. This is a great portable storage drive. Easily fits into pocket or laptop bag. Decent weight and the cord clips keep you from digging in a bag. Cord clips do come off easy, but they re-attach easily also. Durable case, haven't dropped it but seems like it would take a few. Transfer speed is good and files are solid once transferred. There are lower priced items, but this one is a winner.
My only Con on this device is the cord. I liked how it had the option to just clip the USB cord right on the device when not in use. However, it doesn’t really work all that great. The clips do not stay in the grooves. They also do not have a tight fit on the cord itself either.
I foresee losing one or both clips in the future, which will really suck.
have a RUGGED drive that still works to this day. had it for like 12 years. hopefully this ARMOR will be just as durable. :-}
The Bad: Not exactly plug and play. Though my Mac recognizes the drive it would not write to (copy and drag) from the get go. My previous externals did not require a 'wipe'. Also, even though this is the heavy duty shock model they chose to ship in a padded envelope. No need to test the winds of fate et al...
Overall: I'm happy with the purchase. Previous external was starting to show signs of failure and this one arrived in a timely manner.
One thing to note, definitely plug this in to USB 3.0/3.1 ports if possible. The issue I had was that I plugged mine into my computer's USB 2.0 port, which caused the transfer speeds to be slower. But once it was plugged into the 3.0/3.1 slot, transfer speeds were noticeably faster.
The drive came to me formatted as FAT32, but I made the decision to format as exFAT, with default file allocation size. Since FAT32 format has a file size limit of 4GB max, I found exFAT was a better option for me.
Really glad to have a durable portable external hard drive! No more need to worry about drive failure if it's dropped by accident. The only thing that would make this even more durable would be to have a Solid State drive instead of a platter-based hard drive; I may open it and upgrade to SSD eventually though since I can reuse this protective case.
Grips on bottom so it doesn't side around.
USB cable can be attached so you don't lose it.
Looks durable.
Cons:
The little piece that holds the USB cable can come apart from the hard drive pretty easily since it is only held by the silicon's friction.
The plastic looks like it's good quality, but if I press on the top face, I can see that it sinks in just a little. Maybe it is not thick enough. It feels like if this gets crushed under some things or tossed around too much in a backpack, it might get cracked or damaged on the inside due to impact. So it is pretty durable, but do be careful with it.
Improvements:?
1) Could be faster .
2) With so many connector types check the model you are getting to make sure it matches your current tech. But also think about your past and potential tech. Make sure that you are buying the right hard drive package to connect you with whatever tech you have with whatever you are backing up. I know it sounds obvious ... However this drive needs a hybrid of proprietary cables and Traditional connectors. Don’t take anything for granted when placing your order.
The 5 stars gets awarded to Silicon Piwer for being so darn helpful and solution oriented And it’s a a very good product.
If your primary use is a home or office in a mostly static location, standard portables do a fine job without the added expense. However, if you move the drive constantly, frequently connecting and disconnecting, and your drive is mission-critical for you, these Silicon Power drives may very well be worth the extra expense. I got mine at an excellent sale price which I haven't seen since, and only wish I'd bought a few more.
The only negative thing I have to say about this drive is that the cord holders don't really work properly. There are rubber clips that the cord snaps into. Meanwhile, these clips attach to the drive housing in a groove in the green silicone around the edge. Unfortunately, the clips fall out of the groove easily. So I simply don't use the clips. No big deal.
The only thing I don't like about this drive is that the two little plastic pieces that connect the USB wire to the drive during transport fall off a lot and are REALLY easy to lose. Being able to connect the USB wire to the drive during transport is a cool idea, I just wish they'd come up with a better way to do this. If you lose the plastic pieces that do this, you out of luck.
