edit: Amazon said they would take the return and refund me if I bring to UPS store. i've barely had this thing a week so i'm hoping they don't give me any issue with it.
TIP: if you buy this, CHECK THE USB CONNECTION PORT ON THE DRIVE IMMEDIATELY. put the cable in and gently push it side to side and check if it's at all loose. if it gives way at all or wiggles, don't risk your data. its such a shame because the design is so nice, but it's misleading. there's nothing rugged about weak connection ports that eject the disk when the cable is touched or breathed on. i wont bother with a replacement or buying from this brand again. better off just building my own.
It is an old MBR model, but it was actually better as it connects to old devices too.
On the down side the connector is a symmetric male USB, which is not standard with external drives. It is also quite short which is very inconvenient when connecting to desktop computers.
I contacted customer support through Amazon messages to try and get help with it. They contacted me back via email within 2 hours asking me to call in, but I wasn't at my computer. When I called, they were closing in 30 minutes and the tech gave me his personal number to call when I got back to my office.
I called in, and tech (Mike) tried to get it working to no avail.
He apologized profusely and we agreed I would return it and order a new one.
About 45 minutes later (at 10:27pm) Mike called me back to tell me he had figured out the problem.
10 minutes later, the disk was partitioned properly and initialized correctly and works perfectly.
I cannot express how thankful I am to Mike for being such a great help. Not only giving me his personal number to call him after hours, but the fact that he called me back with the solution, blew me away!!
Kudos to you guys, I am extremely impressed with your great customer service.
THANK YOU!!
Don't let the cool features and snazzy design fool you. It will fail and you'll be left with an expensive paperweight. Keep looking.
I have only had the drive about a week, so I cannot at this time comment on the long-term durability of the device as I can with the Seagates, but so far it seems like an excellent device. It appears to be genuinely 5TB and I have already put my 2TB or so digital collection on it. My collection transferred quickly and easily fit. My favorite thing about this hard drive, though, is how durable it feels. It is encased in a hard, protective case with rubber around the edges. I have not drop-tested it or anything, and hope I never have to, but the construction definitely feels durable. The Seagate drives in comparison do not feel anywhere near as durable and I even had hard drive cases to transport them in. This hard drive could likely survive a shoulder-level drop even onto a hard surface, while the Seagate drives seem like they would break fairly easily if dropped from a minor height without a case. My only complaint about this Silicon Power drive is that the connecting cable is very short and just barely reaches the USB port on my computer despite being right next to this. The Seagate drives and other drives I have had always had longer cables. While this is a minor problem since a longer cord could always be bought separately, it is a shame a longer one is not included for free since it would cost the company very little to include a longer one.
Overall, I highly recommend this external hard drive and wish all external hard drives were built like this. As far as I can tell, the 5TB size is accurate. It quickly transfers files, and it also feels very durable (if I ever accidentally test this, I will update this review with the results). I would only recommend getting a longer cord if you intend to use this drive farther away from the computer, but otherwise it is an excellent hard drive.
The attached picture compares the length of this Silicon Power 5TB hard drive cord with that of the Seagate 5TB hard drive (underneath) cord. As you can see, it is a bit longer and reaches the USB ports much more easily.
Updated August 6, 2019: So, I checked the order date and I ordered this hard drive on August 18, 2018, and since I have Prime I would have gotten it on August 20, 2018, so it is less than a year old. Last week Tuesday or Wednesday, it suddenly started opening folders slowly, and then the day after it stopped appearing in File Explorer. It only appeared under bluetooth & other devices, saying "driver error" underneath. I tried re-installing the USB driver for it in device manager (where it was displaying a code 10 error), but when I did that, it only appeared as "Local Disk (G:)" in File Explorer, and when I tried to open it, it froze my computer. I have 5 other drives (a 500GB WD, a 1TB Toshiba, two 4TB Seagates, and a 5TB Seagate), and with the exception of the 5TB Seagate (which I bought at the same time as this drive), the other 4 are older than this drive and still work well (the 500GB WD is probably close to 10 years old and still works). While I have had the occasional jump drive break or fail, and I have found microSD cards to frequently fail, my experience with hard drives is that they usually last a long time, and this Silicon Power hard drive is the first exception. While 5 drives may not be the largest sample size, so far my experience has been that hard drives last a while, so it was disappointing to have this drive fail so soon, especially one that is supposed to be tough and rugged (what's the point of having an extremely protective casing if the drive inside is mediocre?). Based solely on this experience, I would give this drive one star. However, I did contact Silicon Power via email, and while they were unable to provide me a way to fix the drive here at home (it doesn't show up in disk management before re-installing the USB driver, and after re-installing it, the drive causes disk management to hang and not finish opening, so I guess this suggests a more serious issue with the drive), they have offered to give me a RMA number that would allow me to return the drive and either have them fix it or send me a replacement. While I'm not sure if I will send it back in (it seems like a hassle to send it in and I need to pay for the packaging and postage to send it in, plus I was using it as an exact copy of the 5TB Seagate drive (so luckily no data loss by losing this Silicon Power drive) and I'm not sure if I want to wait possibly weeks without having a backup for the 5TB Seagate drive while Silicon Power either fixes the drive or sends me a replacement), I am adding one more star (for a total of two stars) onto the review for Silicon Power's willingness to try to address the issue. It does seem to still run when I plug it in, so if I don't send it back in to Silicon Power, I may try to see if there is a way to fix it locally. I'm thinking there is a possibility that it is as simple as a loose connection somewhere, though it could be more serious and there could be some sort of internal issue with the drive that doesn't impede it spinning (I do hear three quiet clicks coming in intervals from the drive while it is plugged in, so I'm not sure if that means anything). Anyway, this was the first drive I bought from a smaller company like Silicon Power, and after having the drive fail after less than a year, I will be much more reluctant to purchase a drive in the future not from a larger hard drive manufacturer like WD or Seagate. While I appreciate Silicon Power's willingness to try to correct an issue, waiting probably upwards of a week for a replacement drive and having to pay for shipping to Silicon Power isn't appealing to me'. While I still think the casing of this drive is excellent, I no longer recommend this drive as enthusiastically, since in my experience, this is the shortest lasting drive I have had. While it worked well for a year and seemed to transfer and read data just as quickly as my other drives, if these drives are going to cease being recognized by the computer after only a year or two and the only way to have it fixed or replaced involves significant hassle, I would recommend purchasing instead from Seagate or WD, and for protection I think Lacdo makes excellent protective hard drive carrying cases, and they cost less than $10.
Pros
The device is not to expensive for the storage size. It does have a pretty good protective case that should keep the harddrive safe when not powered on. The device is small and very portable. You could put it in your pocket and it would be fine. You able to setup the hdd on the Xbox one and transfer files over pretty easy. I haven't noticed any slow down due to playing games saved to the hdd.
Con
The device is a normal harddrive with everything moving to ssd it would give it a improved tranfer rate and more durability. Because the hdd is in a case it gets hot with long usage.
Over all for the price I would buy it again or buy a 2nd one once this one gets full. Since it would be easy to swap out.
Cons: The cable doesnt fit well into the recess on the outer case and the hooks used to hold it in place are very poorly made. Cable can easily fall off whilst carrying in your bag or luggage
I've tried reformating the drive and they persist. Waste of money. Just spend the extra $$ and get a quality drive.
I have all my games on here which is really nice I dont have to keep deleting a game when I want to play a different game.
I still have a lot of space left it got old always running out of space till I bought this.
It was really easy to set up on my ps4.
If you're considering getting an external hard drive for the ps4. I would suggest this brand.
Other than that, the product works. The way the cord is house on the HD itself is kind odd and falls out alot.
Also opted for the 2 year data backup plan - just incase things crash and I lose games downloaded on the storage block
Jhandu Hard Disk.
Here are my conclusions:
The drive is quite small and lightweight. I have used quite a bit of the LaCie rugged drives in the past and they can be fairly bulky. This drive could slip easily into a slim laptop neoprene case or even a jacket pocket. (See photos). The marketing says its scratch resistant but I dont see that being a reality. The plastic casing on top and bottom is your standard ABS so im sure you will be able to get a scratch or ding or 2 over time.
The USB port on the drive itself is a full size USB-C type connector and it is colored the correct Blue (pantone 300) indicating it is in fact a USB 3.0 port. The packaging states USB 3.1 Gen 1 however that confused me because technically USB 3.1 is Gen 2. I tested the speed (see photos) and the average rate was 120.5 MB/s read and 122.5 MB/s write. This is where the drive gets the most stars. USB 3.0 average speed tables are around 60 MB/s so the 3.1 format is clocking at x2 the speed which is just about right, comparative to other 3.1 USB drives. Now to put that into comparison for folks who really need all the speed they can get, the average internal HD clocks in about 300 MB/s so keep that in mind. A USB external drive isnt going to give you the same kind of results. So choose your use case for these types of drives carefully. Testing against my Seagate 5tb tabletop external drives which are also USB 3.1 the write speed is about the same but the read speed on my Seagates are only 95 MB/s. The bench computer is a 27" iMac i7.
The drive comes formatted as FAT32. I reformatted it to be a standard Mac OS Extended (journaled) which is compatible with Time Machine so you can use this for your Mac OS backup drive.
I like the convenience of attaching the USB cable to the exterior so you don't have to find another place to store a cable, or possibly forgetting it all together. Keep in mind the clips that hold the USB cable are removable. They slip into a silicone rubber channel and do come out if you pull the USB cord hard enough. I don't see a reason why this should be an issue but its also designed not to be permanent so keep that in mind. The cable is also short. I would say 12" port to port.
There's 2 non-slip rubber channels on the base so that it wont slide around too much on your desk and the same soft silicone rubber around the entire edges of the drive. They don't stick out past the hard plastic top and bottom however so not sure how effective they would be in dampening the shock from a fall on the corners which is probably the most lethal spot. Keep in mind this drive is NOT a SSD drive (or it would cost a lot more) so don't drop it while it's in use.
PROS:
Lightweight
Fast 3.1 USB r/w
Small Size
Convenient Cable Storage
Low Cost
CONS:
Not as durable as can be. I give it 4 stars for its construction/durability
Not a SSD drive
If you like my review please give it Helpful thumbs up!
The device has been plugged into my Win10 laptop and does not complain at all.
Transfer speeds are oft measured by the nerdy ones but not me, I drag/drop and it doesn't complain nor take much time on large files (in excess of 9GB took all of 22 seconds)
I bought this for my video and photo work and sync with the cloud so always back up your back up.
Build quality is very good for what one can see, I like the fact the sync cable is included and has a nifty holder on the device itself.
Size is a bit bigger than an old blackberry phone (for those who know and remember what that is), but thicker due to the protective outer cover.
On a scale of 10, I can give this an 8.5
