Quiet, fast, low energy consumption. Purchased one 7200.12 at a local retailer for use in an Apple Mac Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 as an upgrade for my 7200.7 160 GB Seagate media drive. So pleased with it I purchased a second from Amazon to swap out my boot drive too. Had good luck with Seagate and Western Digital drives so I stick to what has worked for me.

I used this drive in a Windows Home Server and was one of six drives. Since it was one of six, it's usage couldn't have been that high, compared to a pc with only one drive, yet it began clicking and was immediately unreadable. It worked fine for seven months and gave no warning before ceasing to work. I have another Seagate drive in the WHS that I'm going watch closely and fear that it will eventually die as well. I recommend staying away from Seagate and go with Western Digital. None of those drives have failed me yet.

Just read all the other 1 star reviews here and on other sites (rhymes with "egg"). As everybody has written, there is a serious problem with these drives. Besides the DOE and early failures the most reported problem is the freezing. I bought 3 of these for my HTPC and whenever I play anything (VIDEO_TS, mkv, avi, divx...) I consistently get after 3-5 minutes freezing for about 1-2 minutes. It is very annoying in a HTPC but in a RAID this spells disaster. The worst part of this is that Seagate is doing the "head in the sand" tech support. This reminds me of the Intel P4 math error when Intel initially stated that it wasn't a problem, then that it was not a big deal and then finally replaced all those faulty CPU's.Apparently nobody at Seagate has the guts and brains to come forward and call a spade a spade.Nobody should buy any more Seagate drives until they post a fix on the main product page or the main tech support page. I went to the Seagate forums and there are many messages of people calling and emailing and just being ignored for weeks. There are even firmware updates on bittorrent (WTF?). What kind of company deserts their customers to the point that they have to search on torrents for a solution???I just hope that a big Class-Action law firm will loose their data with these drives and take them to the cleaners. Any company that has this much disdain for their customers should be severely punished. At least the CTO and the responsible persons for tech support and customer service should be fired.Maybe an internet-wide Seagate boycott will wake them up!

Installation of SATA Internal drives is so much easier than IDE ATA, less wiring clutter makes things neat, just installed, downloaded software from Seagate's site, installed, ran and ,,, Done. Fast and efficient unit.

I've been a WD fan for as long as I've been using computers. When my 4 year old WD4000AAKS bit the dust after a reboot the other day, I decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger drive. This was the least expensive drive with over 1 TB so I went with it. I use it to backup my other disks so I can't say much about speed. If it continues to last, Seagate may win a convert out of it.

The Seagate Barracuda 500GB Sata Drive is Awesome! Flawless install!!! It's quick, quiet, and was JUST THE RIGHT PRICE! Hell, I'd have spent twice as much for the same specs, crappier quality, at Best Buy.

The drive compares favorably with other similar drives in speed (Diskmark scores are in line with my other drives - not faster or slower - just about the same as my WD WD5000AAKS-00YGA0 and WD WD5000AAKS-00TMA0 but FAR slower than my OCZ SOLID_SSD 64GB). I bought two of these drives. The second caused intermittent computer restarts that was fixed using Seagate SeaTools for DOS software - which reassigned bad sectors that Windows did not find using Scandisk. Disk seems to work fine now and no more intermittent reboots or Windows BSODs. If you buy this drive and encounter intermittent restarts or BSODs, try running Seagates drive tools from bootup - might fix it and you won't have to RMA the thing.

I coupled this with an external SATA dual Dock and love it. It has been online for about a month and no issues what-so-ever. I do plan to purchase the exact same unit as a protective back up for the one I'm reviewing. I've moved hundreds of GB's back and fouth with non-commercial HD video editing and have been really impressed by how this drive just swallows everything I throw at it.

This drive works like a dream. Installed quickly and formatted well. Only issue is that I could not use the Quick format option on my Windows 7 workstation, but that was expected. I intend to buy another when the need arises.

I have had no problems with this drive. The free software to transfer the info from the old hard drive to my new one worked great. So far so good.

Seagate drives are the only drive I ever buy. I have never had a problem with them, unlike other drives which have failed to deliver. You won't be disappointed.

Dropped a couple of these into my Mac Pro, one from Amazon and one bought elsewhere and have no trouble whatsoever. They take almost no time to install on a Mac Pro (they mount on a sled and have no cables to fuss with on the Mac Pro) and have worked flawlessly. 1.5 TB at this price is a great deal.

I ordered four of these for my Qnap TS-410 a month ago, and none of them have yet crashed, so I am satisfied :-) When it comes to performance I do not think that I would see any difference between another good brand in this class and the Seagate Barracudas, and price is about the same.QNAP TS-410 4-Bay Desktop Network Attached Storage

The drive got here in a couple of days. I installed the Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 GB drive in minutes, after which I loaded an older version of XP. After loading the updates, anti-virus, and networking, the drive boots up fast, performs extremely well, and is more than I expected.

I purchased 2 of them months ago and they are great!The firmware issue only affects and old batch, so right now (Aug 2009) its safe to buy (even when I buy them months ago it was safe :P )I have one of them on a backup-NAS and other one on my PCH Media player, right now I'm planing on buying a 3rd one (unless something bigger from Seagate shows up).The only negative I can think of is the heat, (they are hotter than the 750GB Samsungs I have) so be sure to have some kind of ventilation for them, and don't place them on a non-ventilated enclosure.BTW, they are really fast drives, you can verify it online on major review sites, in fact I was really tempted to replace my PC's 750GB Samsungs with them, but I really needed the extra storage on the NAS and PCH.

We bought 5 of these to use 2 for Raid 1 in our backup device, and then use the other 3 for rotating sata backups. No Matter what we did the RAID and drives would only stay online for maybe a day. Then the transfer speed from the RAID to the SATA (On the same Controller) was worse than USB 1.1 speeds. We checked for firmware updates and got nowhere. The drives would almost work as expected individually on individual SATA Controllers that were not in a RAID array, but this didn't work for us and even then Windows would randomly tell us we needed to initialize the disk. We tried both quick and full formats, alternated controllers, and then suffered data loss. Since this debacle we have re-engineered our solutions to use 1TB Drives instead which work beautifully on the same controllers and hardware that these were in.

I ordered 2 of the 1TB drives and created a RAID 1 array in my PC. Day 2 after installing, the drive in port 0, failed. I RMA'ed the drive back to Amazon, and they quickly shipped me a new one. I received the replacement, installed, and the RAID array rebuilt. Then, 3 days later, the 2nd drive, the drive in port 1, failed. I'm RMA'ing back this drive to Amazon. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with the new drives. Anyway, there are some serious quality control issues with Seagate. I've never had problems like this with their drives before.The drives, when working, are great. Fast and quiet. However, just don't rely too heavily on the drives. Be sure to backup your important stuff in multiple places.
