It's everything I expected for the price. It is slower than I thought but that could also be my internet provider. Storage capacity is great and the processor is very quite.

We purchased over 20 of these drives a few months ago. Of the 20only 1 went "bad". Good speed. Reliability is iffy at most with somany bad reviews about it. We believe buyers will spend time writinga bad review because they DID GET a bad product.Which leads us to believe that Seagate, which has been a great companyfor producing Hard Disks in the past, hired a double agent from WesternDigital a couple of years ago unknownly, and now WD is rising, andSeagate falling...Think about it Seagate.Danxo (The Walter Judson Group)

I purchased three of these drives. I was hesitant after the problems with version 11 but after reading a review on how fast there drives were and reading that the version 12 drives were fixed I went ahead. I set up two drives in a RAID 1 and used the third drive as my boot drive. Within 24 hours my PC was slowing down and during boot I was getting a "RAID degraded message". Then the clicking started. I isolated the clicking drive by pulling the power from the drives one by one. It was one of the RAID drives. I sent it back to Amazon and received a new drive. I installed the new drive, the RAID rebuilt itself. Less than 24 hours later my system started to slow and the clicking started again. This time it was the Boot Drive. Same process, returned the drive, got a new drive and installed the drive. Less than 24 hours later the new boot drive started clicking and freezing my system. 3 of 3 is a 100% failure rate. In fact Amazon has chosen to not replace my drive, they will only provide a refund. How can a company like Seagate have such poor quality control. I love the performance of the drives but........

I installed this as a second drive in my desktop computer and have been satisfied with the performance. I would rate it as very quiet. If I listen closely I can tell that it is running, but that is about all. The only sound that is really noticeable is when it auto-parks after it has been idle for a while, and when it restarts when I access it. I actually enjoy hearing the "snap-snap" sound that occurs when the two drives auto-park in sequence when the computer goes to sleep -- I guess I am just easily entertained! One caution: this is an OEM package, so don't forget to order a SATA cable and the appropriate (very short) 6-32 screws to go with it, as there is nothing in the package except the drive itself. I was able to find "retail package" drives locally, which include the SATA cable in the box (don't know if it includes screws), but they were all the 7000.11 version, not the 12th generation drive like this one. The 7000.12 is supposed to be quite a bit lower in power consumption, and based on the wattage readout on my UPS I can confirm that this drive adds very little load to the power supply.

I purchase 4 of these drives over the period of a month. They all have under 100 hrs of use and only one is still operational with substantial errors and warnings from the S.M.A.R.T diagnostics on the drive. Working with the vendor is a challenge, they would like you to run their diagnostics but on dead drives nothing happens and getting to support without that is a challenge, still trying. Apart from that, the drive sounded like a great solution for storage but given the failure rate, I'm not happy or would NOT recommend them. At least if support was accessible, then you could work with that. Some of folks complained here about packaging, in my case the boxes arrived in very good conditions and the drives were well protected.

I ordered this on a gold box deal for $92. What a steal! You do always pay for what you get, because I have returned not one but TWO, and still do not have a functioning drive. After requesting a replacement for the second drive, Amazon sent me an emailing stating that they will just refund my money rather than replace another drive.I read the reviews, and checked for a firmware update before attempting anything else. Both came with updated firmware. I tried nearly everything to try to get both drives to work, using all of Seagate's available tools after Windows could not format. However, I quickly discovered multiple bad sectors on both drives. The first drive couldn't even pass the Seagate DOS short test!If you can get a drive that works, then maybe you're just lucky. I should have listened to the reviews, but I thought that it was impossible that so many drives were truly DOA. Having experienced first-hand, I know now that this may just be a faulty design.

Although the first disk drive I received didn't work, Amazon quickly replaced it (UPS picked it up at my house), and the second drive is working great. It's nice to have a company that responds quickly to issues. I actually received my replacement drive around the same time UPS picked up my first drive that had issues.

I ordered four Seagate 500 GB hard drives for my computer now, and out of those four, three have failed. The first failed instantly, the second failed a couple months later, and now my third hard drive is failing about half a year after use.I'm surprised that my fourth hard drive is doing as well as it has after seeing the others fail so quickly. This is totally unacceptable. Three fourths of my hard drives failing within less than a year? I have computers that are 25 years old that still work great. These are bad hard drives. And if you are wondering, my hard drives are all placed properly and are not over-heating.

I won't go into the finer points of how speeds and write/read rates acted on this machine.I will simply state that it worked right out of the box in my external dock i picked up off of amazon. No fuss. No issues. I plugged it in, formated it and have not looked back since.I initially had it written in FAT32 but reformated into NTFS -- so i have 1 format (quick) and about 200GB of written data to it with no issues.Speed is good over USB 2.0 being streamed to my media center extender across the network.Overall, for an inexpensive mass storage solution this works.

The video streaming with the Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM is quite good... quite what I expected it to do. It streamed in a 1080p HD video without a pause. I can also stream videos from my Windows 7 desktop into the TV with the media extender. Plus there is the 32 MB cache. I have configured my ST31500341AS to RAID-1.When I start up this internal hard drive up it is noisy. It also moves away from the RAID configuration and this can be frustrating at times! On the whole I felt it was a fair buy.

This was a Seagate hard drive put in an defectively designed cardboard box without a plastic clam shell. The result was ZERO padding for the hard drive during shipment. I repeat ZERO padding. If Amazon is shipping hard drives like this, it's like purchasing a time bomb for your data.

Well, I went into this purchase with my eyes wide open, having read several reviews here and elsewhere with purchasers recounting problems with this particular drive stalling, almost always associated with RAID arrays. Those reviews also included several more technically minded people who had tracked down a firmware update (mine took version SD1A) for the drive that apparently resolves most or all of the problems others have had.I downloaded the firmware before the drive arrived. Then, when the drive was delivered, I read the firmware version printed on the label on the drive, noticing that it was indeed one of the revisions that had the bug mentioned above.I installed the drive, turned on the computer, then - before the bootup started - changed my BIOS settings to set the SATA controller to IDE mode, disabling all other hard drives, then set it to boot to floppy.I then inserted a bootable floppy with the firmware updater on it, rebooted, then waited for my system to boot to the floppy. Then, I executed the required command from the command line to start the firmware update, then waited for approximately one minute for it to complete, which it did, indicating no problems.I ejected the floppy, rebooted, reset the BIOS settings to recognize all drives again, exited the BIOS, then allowed the system to boot normally.I partitioned the new drive under Linux at its full size, made the files ystem (it should come as no surprise that a 1.5TB drive would take some time making the file system that big!), then migrated my data over from my existing 500GB Maxtor drive.Well, there has not been even a hint of trouble after what has now been nearly a month of intensive usage, having moved well above the drive's full capacity worth of data. This huge drive appears to be speedy and reliable after all.If I really thought I needed more than the 2+TB worth of space I now have, I would not hesitate to buy another.Who knows, my small drive (200GB) is about five years old, and it may give up the ghost, in which case I will grab another Seagate 1.5TB, although there will probably be a drive of 2TB or larger by that time.

I've recently become concerned about Seagate hard disk reliability and build qualityA 1TB model failed in less than 1 yearthe drive started having booting issues and then made horriblemetal on metal sounds, and would start.. (head crash)A Win7 upgrade went poorly using this 1.5T drive, \file system was corrupted some how, and check disk wouldn't complete.also reviews at newegg and other online sites confirmed similar reliability issues by other seagate custmersa recent purchase of HP business desktops, revealed a warning about SeaGate firmwareneeding an update.or drives would unexpectedly fail to boot.i was forced to reformat the drive for safety and do a fresh Win7 installand reinstall all my apps; 2 days of unnecessary work.i purchased WD 2.0 Terrabyte as my primary drive, and forced the SeaGate to service as atemporary backup drive. i have USB/Firewire MyBook drives as primary backup systems.overall, I was quite fond of SeaGate until i experienced these problemsI'm going to move to WD as my primary hard drive, and wouldn't recommend using thisdrive as a primary boot device until some evidence of improvement occurs...

I've only had the drive for about a month and the real test of longevity will come in the months and years to come. The drive is easy to install and the software that Seagate provides will permit you to easily set up the drive in a number of different ways. As far as noise is concerned the drive seems very quite with fast access times although I've not made any actual measurements - just my perception. The bottom line is hopefully these 12 generation drives do not suffer catastrophic failures like the 11th generation did. However on that note I will say that Seagate was fast and efficient in replacing two failed 11th generation drives that I had the misfortune to buy - albeit with refurbished 10th generation disks instead of new 12th generation drives (sigh). One final note regarding Seagate hard drives. I've recently purchased three Seagate 500GB drives and not a one of them had the correct model number labeled on the box. Really strange from my view point but the actual model numbers seems to be only available on the drive itself.

I bought two of these to install in a RAID configuration. When I loaded Windows XP, the OS didn't recognize the array and the software packaged with the drives wouldn't run because it said there wasn't a seagate or maxtor drive installed in my system. I bought the extra software from Acronis, but it still didn't recognize the new array. One of the drives in the old array (the maxtor) failed while I was using the Acronis software to copy an image to my external backup array. Finally, I was able to get the new array to work by using the utilities from a Western Digital drive (the one that survived the backup operation) that I installed two years ago. I'm going to buy western digital drives exclusively from now on.

Pros: cheap ($39), free shipping, faster than the HDD it replaced in my HP Slimline (Seagate drive).Cons: it's noisy. I have worked with HDDs for 25 years, and I know a noisy drive. Packaging is rather weak. I'll keep the drive, though, since it is used in my backup PC, and I have already reloaded 95 percent of my apps.Next time I'll spend a little more and get a Western Digital Caviar.

It seems that a lot of people have problems with this drive, but I have had none. I picked up a Hitachi at Fry's and the sales guy told me Seagate was more reliable. They were the same price so I took his word (I always bought Samsung drives when I lived in Korea but Frys doesn't carry Samsung). I believe that was about 7 months ago. I have had no problems.About my usage:The drive is installed in a computer which I built. It is a secondary drive used to back up my Ubuntu files (about 200GB worth) twice a week and to store older files that I no longer use. Windows 7 also uses the drive as backup whenever I log in to that, but it's not often. I have partitioned and repartitioned it maybe 5 times. I was running Fedora 11 from the drive for a few months but have since uninstalled it. I defrag the NTFS partition once a month or less.UPDATE: 2 years later. Still works fine.
