I bought a 1Tb Barracuda, ST31000340AS and another ST31000528AS a few weeks later as backup. One day, more than a year ago, i turned on my PC and it wouldn't boot. I did not recognize my HDDs. I tried everything and then thought it was my SATA ports or MB. I removed my very nice Gigabyte board and replaced it with a crappy Mini-ATX board and had the same thing. I happened to Google the drives and found out they were bricked. I got ZERO support from Seagate, getting replies that my problem was handled.I had CDs ripped and backed up on that drive i later sold. I have maybe 200 dollars worth of MP3s from ITunes and Amazon on these drives.I have important Docs there. The drives are dead and i have never received a single bit of help, even meandering through their maze of support nonsense. All i had was on those disks and backed up. Faulty firmware from Thailand the the other disk also bricked caused my whole system to DIE!I will never buy another Seagate or even Maxtor. I had great respect for Seagate, having two 120s that were great in a Raid 1 config, one of which still lives almost a decade later!Never again. They left me high and dry. Firmware updates? Try loading them on a disk that is DEAD!

Purchased a big lot of these with friends last year. Of the drives, we had an average of 20% failure rate. If you do use them, make sure you monitor them carefully for the "click of death". it's a known hardware issue. Thank god for backup. I only lost about 200GB of data but was able to recover almost everything, things that I didnt backup between the time of copy and last backup.

I will never buy another Seagate internal hard drive memory ever again. In the past, I have purchased about five of these internal drives and in the end I've had to RMA two back to the manufacturer and now I have another one that I need to send back because it has failed, to be more specific I have differing numbers of the barracuda series 7200.10, 7200.11, either the 750 GB or 1 TB sizes and I haven't seen any trend in which ones fail and which ones don't, but I'm not very impressed with any of them. I must admit that Seagate customer service is usually very good and they are very quick to replace my old drive, but they replace it with a certified repaired HDD. Regardless of the fact that Seagate replaces the drive, there is no way that they can recover the information on the drive and unless I have backed it up, I have lost the information forever. There is nothing more frustrating than having to think about whether or not you have backed up your music files or your important family pictures.I guess I never really thought that there was a difference amongst the different hard drive manufacturers, and I hate to pick on just one manufacturer, but all of the problems and failed drives that I have had in the past have been Seagate. Don't get me wrong, when you first get to drive, they run great, they are fast and quiet and they do exactly what they are supposed to do, but after several months of use and as the drive becomes more filled with your important information, it becomes extremely frustrating when you start hearing the ticking sound since that is probably the first indication and that is when you know that the drive is starting to fail and that you have only a short amount of time before you have to back up all of your data before you lose it.In the past, I've usually purchased storage drives based on whichever one was on sale or was the bargain at the time I needed to add to my storage, but from now on I will take into consideration the name brand as I have now vowed to never purchase another Seagate hard drive. I must admit that Seagate usually had the best price, therefore I usually ended up with more of them in the past, but I have also have purchased Western Digital, Hitachi and now Samsung. I've never had such problems with any of my other big, 1 TB, storage drives which brings me to the conclusion that it must be the manufacturing of the drive and the poor quality inspection as well as the inferior work mention of the drive and that is the reason why it fails.I've noticed that filling my storage drives close to 750 GB increases the likelihood that it will begin to act strangely, and if the drive is going to fail then that is usually when I begin hearing that infuriating ticking sound which only gives me a little time to "backup" my information. This experience has now made me paranoid so I backup and backup my backups so don't lose any information.

Ordered four of these, and one failed just after the Amazon return window expired. Still under Seagate warranty, but their return process is more tedious. Had the exact same issue with the 2 TB version in a different system: one of the four drives failed shortly after arrival.

First time I bought a 500Gb version of this drive a bit more than 4 years ago. It failed pretty quickly (several months) and was replaced by warranty by 1Gb version (st31000340as). This one worked a bit less than 4 years and failed yesterday. It failed instantly and completely: the drive is not recognized by system at all. Fortunately, these drives have 5 years warranty and I am replacing it under warranty. New ones come with 2 or 3 years warranty, seems to me Seagate just gave up to make a reliable harddrive.....

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives failing[...]Left, right and centreBy Paul TaylorTue Jan 13 2009, 03:20SEAGATE'S FLAGSHIP desktop Barracuda 7200.11 drives, in particular the 1TB (ST31000340AS) units, are failing at an alarming rate and prompting outrage from their faithful customers.A new self-bricking feature apparently resides in faulty firmware microcode which will rear its ugly head sometime at boot detection. Essentially the drive will be working as normal for a while, then - out of the blue - it'll brick itself to death. The next time you reboot your computer the drive will simply lock itself up as a failsafe and won't be detected by the BIOS. In other words, there's power, spin-up, but no detection to enable booting.Naturally the Seagate forums (as well as many other customer-driven forums, like etailers and hardware sites) are flooded with testimonies of customers' experiences with Seagate support. These are helpful enough to ship you a new drive, as per the warranty, but invariably the drives end up bricking as well.FailRMA and Data Recovery Centres are also reporting that there's a very high rate of failure on these drives. One user in particular reports having set up a 6 TB drive array and over the course of 1 month having half the drives fail on him. No official stats are available, but at least one RMA middleman has told us there's about 30-40% failure rates.According to data recovery experts Seagate has diagnosed the problem and issued a new firmware to address it. However, drives that have already been affected can't have the firmware applied to them due to their locked-down status.Users are extra-peeved because beyond the usual RMA drill, if they want to recover the data on those drives they can get stuck with a hefty data recovery bill to pay.Over a month into the problem Seagate had still not come back to customers with an official solution. Despite the company updating the firmware on newer drives, it has issued no recall on the firmware-defective drives that are still on shop shelves. They must be waiting for some grand event to come and go, say a shareholder meeting?Drive origin and firmware seem to be Thailand and SD15, but at least one user reports having had identical problems with a unit from the Wuxi(ng) fab and the SD35 firmware.Of course, we've mailed and called Seagate about this, but it seems their execs are too busy to pick up the phone or write back. We'll just refer them to that longstanding truth that good names are built over years and shattered in seconds.

don't you EVER EVER EVER think of getting this piece of junk, if you wanna know why, just type the model and add the word lock-down and you will see why.I have read somewhere that 40% of these HDDs get to a lock-down state where the HDD keeps on spinning but it doesn't work, the pc won't boot, and if you are a tech guy, just wanna make it more simple by saying the BIOS won't detect it.Have found a website that offered the solution, the people who tried it said it got their HDD working, but I don't know if I will ever be able to do it, it is too damn complicated even to a tech savvy like me, so long story short, don't buy it and if you know anyone who did buy it tell them to immediately update their firmware, get the data out and BURN this piece of junk!!

Running a 2006 Mac Pro with 4 drives. Not sure when I got this one, but it is the only one to fail.On the plus side, it did finally convince me to get an external backup drive for pics and video.Oh! I also got to play with various tech tool programs to get my data off - is that a plus?Would not buy again.

Had mine fail after about 4 years. No issues since I had a backup of the drive. Returned for a replacement drive which was send out rather quickly and is easy to track the status on Seagate website. Only problem is that when Seagate sends a replacement drive, the delivery confirmation through UPS isn't enough. They MAKE you sign for it. What a PITA! Finally after receiving it on the 3rd delivery attempt the drive spun up regularly and I haven't had any problems since. This happened almost a year ago, so my warranty has lapsed by now. Drive still working.

They will tell you firmware issue is resolved but these drives have an infamously high failure rate irregardless. Lost my first drive within 8 months so it was RMA'ed and I received a 'certified repaired' piece of junk that "SMART tripped" in two months (not heat tripped though). I made the mistake of buying the cheap 1TB drive without reading reviews do yourself a favor and avoid seagate until they get there quality back in check. Don't take my word for it pretty much all hardware review sites agree 7200.11's are ticking time-bombs especially the 1TB model.

My drive lasted for 2 years (which is better than some of the other reviewers) and just died on me a couple of days ago. The drive died completely on a whim; there were no signs of it failing. It just decided to go kaput on me one day.Fortunately, I am not alone. People... Do NOT buy this drive, or any Seagate drive for that matter. Its a good thing I have everything backed up, but it was still a hellish experience. With the others, I am sure this is firmware issues.
