At first, I considered some of the Windows tablets on the market as Windows 10/11 have proven to be my daily driver OS on most of my devices but it appears most drawbacks were processing power.
I finally decided I'd look at a Qualcomm-based Android tablet. Knowing Samsung's reputation as a tablet manufacturer, I decided to look into an entry-level Galaxy Tab.
My expectations for the tablet I needed came down to the following:
-Good streaming capability (to watch Netflix and Twitch)
-Lite gaming ability (for console emulation)
-Expansive storage capability (for music, video, and other media)
-Exceptional network connectivity (for conference calls)
Initially, I considered 32GB A7 Lite and A8 Models but customers reviews steered me away from these models due to lack of RAM. Reportedly, 32GB models have 2GB RAM while 64GBs have 3GB. This led me to the 64GB model, which I purchased and picked up a 128GB SD card too.
When it arrived the tablet was incredibly easy to set up. In about 15 minutes, I was updated, signed in, and good to go.
For streaming, I've tried Netflix, Hulu, Youtube TV, Youtube, and Twitch all managed to playback smoothly at 1080p on the fantastic display.
Gaming performance was exceptional. Especially in titles like Sonic Dash, Fruit Ninja, Mario Kart, and Call of Duty. For Emulation, I've had great luck with GBA, SNES, and Genesis titles.
Conference calls, work email, and productivity apps seem to run smoothly also.
My only real criticism is the lack of ability to copy apps to the SD card. But this seems to be commonplace for most modern Android devices now, so paying for the extra storage is worth every penny.
Overall, a great tablet for the price point.
Tab A7 review:
I primarily use this tablet for reading and media consumption so thats what my experience will be from.
Overall this is a great tablet in regards to its performance for reading and watching YouTube and movies. The screen size and display is great for watching videos, there is nothing fancy about it like the latest tab S series tablets but its gets the job done. In regards to reading the 1080p display and size of the screen is a joy to read off of. Coming from a 720p fire tablet 8, the letters look crisp and the screen real-estate is a major upgrade.
The tablet is relatively light however it might be difficult to hold with one hand due to its size. The quad speakers on this tablet are loud and crisp so thats something I'm happy about since I feel more immersed in whatever I'm watching.
The 3 gb of ram will get the job done if you don't have too many apps open (8 or more in my experience), even if you have a lot of apps running in the background the only noticeable difference would be a minor slow down when changing apps or opening a new app.
The only real con which isn't a big deal is the storage on the tablet itself (32/64 gigs). If you're like me and have a ton of audio books, epubs, pdfs, and videos downloaded, I highly suggest spending a few extra bucks on a large capacity micro SD card. If you just stream videos, you should be fine on the amount of local memory.
Overall I'd highly recommend this tablet, ESPECIALLY at the price of $180. If you are looking for something to simply watch YouTube or Netflix and maybe play some candy crush this is the tablet for you. If you are looking for an awesome budget upgrade from a fire tablet 7 or 8, I can't highly recommend this enough, this tablet is silky smooth and snappier compared to the fire 7/8. If you are a student that is looking for something more productive (note taking, excel, PowerPoint, writing on pdfs) i would not recommend this due to its lack of RAM and integrated stylus support, you're better off with the tab s6 lite/tab 6/ tab s5e

Compartive review:
I had recently bought a Samsung tab A 10.1 3 gb variant (2019) and I've had it for about 3 weeks. I just recently found about this tablet and was curious about the differences so I went ahead and bought it due to its low price ($180) compared to the $200 i payed for the tab A.
Biggest difference i noticed immediately was the speakers. WAY clearer sound and louder, due to the quad speaker set up. It leaves the muffled dual speakers in the tab A in the dust. I'd say the A7 has great sound quality for the price point.
Compared to the Tab A, the A7 has a similar screen and a bit higher resolution, but the difference isn't significant. One thing I noticed was that the tab A had a bit of a red tint compared to the A7, I couldn't really tell unless I had the screens right next to each other.
The A7 battery capacity is also a big bigger compared to the tab A, its slightly noticeable.

As far as the tablet goes, its very clean and has a FANTASTIC display when compared to the old Tab 3 8" model its replacing and a really good-sounding Atmos surround system (minus any sign of bass, of course!). Unfortunately, this is a Samsung Galaxy product, and it must written somewhere that Samsung is required to load as much Google crap as they can onto every product they manufacture! After setting it up and screwing with it for 2+ WEEKS (thank goodness I bought it a full month before Christmas, I anticipated this happening), I finally said F#*% it and rooted the damned thing!!! Titanium Backup to the rescue!!!!!
I froze almost 30 apps/services, most of it from Google stuff, and it now runs like a rocket! Battery life is great, with light/medium use it is lasting about 3 days on a single charge. With no use, sitting on my desk, it lasted 12 days without a charge and still had 18% battery life left.
Before root, it would constantly "ding" at me to turn on this, register that, enter my info, log into something, update these apps, etc. After root I was now able to just wait for those few remaining pesky Google warnings to pop up, determine what app was whining and used Titanium backup to freeze it, or just turn off all notifications for that specific app, something Samsung does not allow you to do on 99% of the installed app without rooting the device, even though its possible for them to allow if they really wanted to. I guess all of this in the name of security--or more truful, less tech support requirements from Samsung.
Bottom line here, at least for me, is that this tablet is wonderful, but only if you get rid of all the unnecessary garbage. I highly doubt there's too many folks using a 10 inch tablet to pay via google pay at checkout counters! Most of the time these tabs are used to play videos, watch youtube and browse the internet, and not one of the apps on the stock device does this without a bunch of nagging to register or update them!
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 with the S Pen, this Tab A7 has a touchscreen but no S Pen, just a regular touchscreen pen I use but I am an artist and needed the S7. This A7 is just a tad smaller, has the advantage of a headphone jack (my S7 does not!!!), and operates and performs just as well as its big brother. Terrific sound, gorgeous display, wonderful touchscreen, and is perfect for anyone that wants a fantastic tablet for general, daily use and at a great size and price. It works with any basic capacitive stylus and you can still do a lot with one of those but it is not included. It charges quickly, has a good length of use, and is an all-around great tablet. I am always on it even though I have my other one and other than the size and lack of an active stylus, you would never know the difference!
As far as this tablet goes, I'm pretty happy with it as a replacement for my NVIDIA Shield Tablet. The battery life on that thing for me has finally kicked the bucket and this device has been very good with its battery life. Performance has been good for minimal tasks, such as watching videos and reading. Videos def take the cake on this device with the speakers which are pretty nice sounding. I'll definitely be happy to take this on some flights whenever I can.
Web browsing though has been a bit of a pretty OK experience. Some lesser end sites run smoothly but other sites tend to take a hit pretty hard. I think this device may be suffering from a lower end CPU and the lack of RAM. It's 3GB which is at least 1GB above what most other tablets in this price range will give you, but I've noticed that the thing uses 2GB pretty consistently even when closing all apps and not doing anything with it. It overall works OK if just trying to look up something really quick, but I wouldn't recommend it as a multi tasking machine.
One minimal complaint I have (which I've read is supposed to be fixed in a future update but we'll see) is there's this bug with the wallpaper where the image appears blurry no matter what I use. It looks fine on a lock screen but when on the regular home screen, there's a noticeable downgrade in quality. I've been able to fix this by using a third party app that sets a live wallpaper of a photo but I don't feel I should have to do this.
Overall if you want something for media consumption, I don't think you can go wrong. Slap a SD card in there with a bunch of movies you want and you'll be set. If you need something for working though you might want to continue looking elsewhere.
It is a beautiful, quick, light, and easy to use tablet for an excellent price.
It works efficiently and the screen is large enough to comfortably play games and stream shows/movies. The battery is long lasting, I can stream shows and play games nearly all day without needing to plug in. I leave a show on while I fall asleep and it lasts through the whole night! I am able to hook up my Xbox controller and play games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft without lag. The screen is bright enough that I am able to play outside with it in the sun, making it great to play at the pool or just relaxing outside. It is comfortable to hold and use.
The only drawback I can think of for this tablet is that sometimes the screen can have input lag (like if I try to draw on it with a stylus, it sometimes won't read it right away and that can get frustrating) and it's a little outdated for Galaxy products. Also, there is no built in blue light filter/night light which was a little upsetting at first, but fortunately there are apps you can download to apply that.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this tablet if you don't want to splurge on a more pricy tablet. I do recommend getting a case with a stand like the one I have photo'd, that did not come with the tablet.
Pros:
Amazing and huge Screen
4 speakers that get super loud
Able to move apps on SD card with new update
USB-C port
Super responsive to touch (even with a glass screen protector on)
Samsung Kids is a great addition to making the tablet more kid-friendly
Came with a 64 gb SD card so I didn't have to buy one
Set up is easy (but maybe it's because we only own Samsung products)
Cons:
Battery life only seems slightly better than the Tab A
Takes 4 hours to charge
Blue Light Filter is terrible imo (works better on Galaxy phones than non-Amoled tablets)
Some apps exclusively use Internal Storage so I'm glad I bought the 64 GB version
Slight lag, but only happened once or twice when I played around on the tablet
All in all, this was a great buy for my daughter's needs.
We plug the tablet in now - 6 months later - move it around along w/ the cords, careful not to jiggle the actual end in the port - until we actually see a lightening bolt that means it’s charging. 5-10 minutes later when we finally achieve lightening bolt stahtus, we carefully and oh-so-gently put the pad down in the place and position it decided to charge in on this particular evening (and hold our breath the lightening bolt doesn’t disappear when we let go of the tablet, which it does 50% of the time and we have to start this process all over again).
Once we know it’s safe to step away from the tablet for the night, we go about our day (or evening) falsely believing the pad is properly charging in place. But NOOOOOOO.... just yesterday it was left to charge a full 8 hours and it only had 85% charge! 16 hours after than and it had GONE DOWN to only 15%! (And yes, I TRIPLE checked for lightening bolt status after checking the battery life the 1st time.)
Someone suggested it could be the cord or the the cube that came with it that plugs into the outlet? So we tried changing the cube since we have so many lying around. That seemed to make it charge faster for a few days, until yesterday’s episode. Help! Do I need a new cord? Or do I need a new tablet?
This is the lowest price table of acceptable quality I have found.
I experienced two minor annoyances:
It seems that it does not always go to sleep properly and then I have to charge it before I expect. I still haven't worked out if that's my fault for picking the wrong setting somewhere or not closing my apps. Still, it provides hours of battery when playing Hay Day.
It is a little hard to use the login screen. When "waking up", it seems a little laggy. The number buttons for the security code are small. I mean it's a big screen, why is the keypad about 1/9 of the screen?
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice large tablet, it just didn't work for what I intended it for. It'll make a nice photo and music storage and youtube machine, but it really does feel like I threw money out the window.
The little things:
The pre-installed apps that take up space but add nothing of value.
The way many apps will not orient horizontally, which is annoying as heck.
The inability to fine tune some settings, and the lack of clear explanations of what certain settings do.
By far THE most annoying thing is where they located the charging port. It's a tablet, not a phone. The port is in the middle of the right side when held horizontally, exactly where your right hand holds it. I often use the tablet while it's charging. The cord is in the worst possible place for this. I find myself turning the tablet vertically when using it while charging. Then at least I can hold it relatively comfortably, although I hate typing and working in that orientation.
It's like whoever designed this never used a tablet while charging it before. It's actually making me think of replacing it already. Which su*ks.
1. USB C charging. No matter what I say, my kids will end up playing them while charging, and the micro usb with the design, tended to break. The even design of the USB C has eliminated this problem.
2. Size. We have had 7, 8 and 10. The 10 inch is just more engaging and interactive, especially for kids. I wasn't looking for portability, so these are the best size fit for us.
3. Brand. We are a samsung house. We have tried all different kinds of tablets and the "off" brands just have a lot of problems and dont hold up (plus it's harder to find cases for them, especially kids cases)
This tablet has great battery life, has a decent internal memory and can hold a large memory card, has a great picture, and just works. We have 4 of them, from a month and a half old to a year and a half old and none of them have had any problems. If one were to break, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this tablet again, and I'm thinking about buying one for myself!
A couple things to know before buying.
- It is a bit laggy. Not being the highest end tablet, it doesn't have the highest end hardware. Honestly for me, it's not a problem, and once apps and webpages load, it's smooth.
- This tab runs on Samsung OneUI, which means certain parts of Samsung Knox are not supported. (e.g. the Secure Folder will not work.)
- The included adapter does not seem to fast charge most devices, weirdly enough. It does fine for this tablet, but for my other devices, no fast charge. It's different than the other Samsung adapters I have. Not sure why this is.
Overall, good stuff.
