I had this headset working for only 1 day before the mic on it broke and wouldn't input any audio. This is the second Plantronics headset that I've had that has broken quickly. I am not at all happy with this.I bought instead the Logitech USB 300 model and although it seems to have worse reviews, I'm quite happy with it. The audio quality seems comparable and more importantly, it's still working. The Plantronics seems to me more fragile and prone to breaking.

I bought the DSP-500 at a Fry's a few weeks back because it was the only nice headset they carried. And that it is--it's a NICE headset. It is engineered like the $130 it originally was--very comfortable, very solid feeling.The DSP-500 is a stereo VoIP/game/dictation/whatever headset. It has two large 40mm speakers that sound quite good. The headset itself is extremely comfortable and uses a pretty standard two-part headband--there is a plastic connection that keeps the two halves together and contains the audio wire, and a rubber bit that supports a lot of the weight of the headset, and keeps your hair from getting in the various sliding joints. The rubber is a bit sticky--maybe that washes out, certainly never tried. The microphone unit is standard stuff, don't know its specs.The major selling point of the DSP series is, to me, it's most questionable and pointless-- the Digital Signal Processor, that box you see on the cable. Basically, it's a USB sound card with built-in sound. Or to less generous consumers, it's an excuse to charge $50 or $70 more. The DSP, I suppose, is nice if you don't have a sound card, or have a bad sound card--not most people, certainly not somebody who would spend this kind of cash on a headset. The DSP is not particularly good, either--there is a LOT of "buzz" in the headset as soon as Windows turns the thing on, that's seperate from any volume. It is quite loud. The sound quality is not great. The microphone acts quite strangely indeed--it has "noise cancellation" which does seem to do SOMETHING, but not anything effective like a good cartoid microphone, and when you're not actively making noise, it records a gawdawful buzzing and clicking. Another reviewer has mentioned some sort of update from Plantronics, which perhaps might fix that problem. Either way, the cheap little DSP is not anywhere near as good as the emu10k1 in the Sound Blaster Live! I have (which is, incidentally, a very nice mid-end DSP). The other issue is, this is a _computer_ mike... only. The only connector is the USB connection. That's an awfully expensive headset for a single use. The one other issue with the USB sound is the way Windows handles it--it treats it as a different audio device, so you must select in the "control panel/Multimedia" dialog which device you want for playback, and for recording; you cannot play to both at once. Also, some software has minor technical issues with things not being "normal."The Plantronics software _appears_ totally useless... it has a few equalizer presets that could possibly be of use... to somebody else. The microphone equalizer is sort of pointless, and the playback equalizer definitely so. Other than that, it has buttons "play movie, listen to MP3" that you can map to different programs. Yawn.So, why am I writing this middling review and giving it 4 stars? Well, on the second bit, because it _is_ a damn good headset. However, I wish to compare it to my NEW headset, the Plantronics HS1. The HS1 is probably not available on Amazon--you can buy it from Plantronics' distributor (...). The HS1 is the DSP-500's older, cheaper twin: Plantronics sells it for (...)and I've not found it available anywhere else. The major difference is the lack of the DSP, but it's not an identical product: the headset itself is minorly different in a negative way: it's a little bit harder, is purple and blue instead of black and grey (basically, the DSP-500 looks way more "professional" or if you will, "l33t"), the microphone boom an microphone are formed a bit differently (don't know if there's any functional difference, it's the same rotation-extension system), and the little inline volume control is not a nice--it's analog, not digital, so it's bigger, it's got a big wheel and an actual switch to turn off the microphone. The main difference for me is the end of the thing--two normal 1/8" stereo jacks. So for the "price" of -$20, a _slightly_ less comfortable and sechsay headset, having to use a normal soundcard, and (probably) getting to deal with Plantronics' distributor (not that that's bad--it came a couple days after I ordered it, normal shipping time). I'd advise you to choose the HS1.Other than that, however, the DSP-500 is your buy if you want this type of device. If Plantronics has something to fix the problematic signal processor, this could well be the almost-perfect USB headset: comfortable, light, good-looking, and did I mention, it sounds _great_ with those big 40mm babies. It'd be nice if Plantronics would update the HS1 to include the various nice parts of the DSP-500.

These headphones worked great with my sound system. It could use a little more volume, but the bass boost on this is nice! I use this constantly for musical recordings with my friends & blending the recording with the instrumental makes the newly formed track almost 100% clear.

Overall I'm very happy with this headset. It delivers great sound and is reasonably priced - a great value IMO.Installation was super easy. The instructions give you step by step details on what to do, not that you really need them. I just pop'd in the install CD, installed their software, plugged in the headset to the USB port. Done. (FYI, I'm using Windows XP)I have no issues going between speakers / headset. Again, it's very easy. A switch on the little control panel would have been nice to disable it, rather than using the software or unplugging it, but not a big deal, as I'm already conditioned to this.I think the sound quality is excellent! I basically use mine for playing games and have played a few dozens games since I've got this headset and have been impressed with the nice bass response and very clear sound. It really puts you in the action!The microphone boom works great too. My friends on Roger Wilco can actually hear me and I don't have to shout (makes the wife happy!). It seems to be a tad hard to 'twist' the boom down into position, but I'd rather have it a little stiff than loose and it always falling out of place (like my old headset).I enjoy the speakers enclosing the ear which gives a nice solid fit. They feel natural and haven't encumbered anything I do with game playing for the most part (switching rapidly between mouse/keyboard/joystick on games like BattleField 1942 can be tricky without touching the headset wires). My only wish is that they would have made it cordless to match my keyboard, mouse, and flight stick.Enjoy!

I have been using this headset for a while. I have not had any problems with the headset. The headset has a pretty high maximum volume that is good for use as a set of speakers (although it isnt that loud) in a pinch.Only drawbacks I have found is that when you enable certain EQ modes the sound becomes distorted.Overall, they are worth the price on Amazon, which is the second lowest price I found anywhere, the cheapest place is not that far away, only like two dollars.

Dsps are good forawhile but plantronics quality is hella bad... audio90s i give about not even a year and same with dsps... thats why they come with a 2 year warrenty

It worked for a few months before one day it started to smoke. The DSP housing literally started to melt and bend and smoke, I unplugged it from my computer in a rush.. My office smelled like an electrical fire had taken place.I've been trying to get in touch with Plantronics now for over two weeks and no one contacts me back. Thanks service.So now I have a rather expensive headset piece that has no functionality anymore and the home company won't replace. I didn't cause this, and it could have started a fire if I had not been witness to it.Be wary fellow purchaser,-ac

I purchased this headset mainly for the game of counter-strike. Although I found it fine for music and other things, there was a major problem i kept encountering with the headset. At random times when my computer would be on, it would freeze my computer, forcing me to manually restart. When my computer doesnt freeze, the headsets work like a charm. I contacted tech support, they couldnt help. I only think that it is b/c of my computer, and not being as up to date as the headset. So a word to the wise....dont plan to use this head set on a crappy computer...im running with windows xp pro, at 700 mhz, and having multiple problems..

You can't go wrong with this headset! I use it a lot for playing games. It has greatly improved my Counter-Strike performance. I also use it a lot when playing GTA Vice City. The tunes in the game sound great. I'm glad I decided to pay a little extra for this set. I have not experienced any problems or discomfort with the DSP-500. I find myself wearing these for 2 - 4 hours sometimes.

The Soundcard-on-the-wire feature rivals in crystal quality a high quality digital headset on my Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum sound card. Of course, many people have been having problems updating to XP. For those of you having trouble with software, go to THIS LINK. I would give this headset a 5-star rating, except for a few things. While the headset was rated for XP, when I installed it on my XP system, I got a security warning that the drivers were not properly signed. I went ahead and installed them anyway, and haven't had any problems so far with the headset, but it did give me pause... The other thing is that it would be nice to have a button on the headset itself to turn the headset off when you're not using it. There is a button on the cord to mute the mike, but not to turn off the headset sound. And as previously mentioned by other reviewers, you have to go into control panel to switch back to your regular computer speakers--seems like there should be an easier way to do that, perhaps incorporating that change into an on/off feature that's readily accessible on the headset. Other than that the headset does give great sound quality, which was my primary consideration in purchasing it.

I've had this headset for about a year now and it has alwaysperformed perfectly.I now have winxp and dont even need the drivers for the headset.Plug them in and the headset takes default. Unplug them andmy speakers are good to go. I use the headset for gaming andeveryone wants to know what I use cuz I come in so loud and clear.This product is worth every penny I paid for it [...]They've come down a bit since I bought them. I'm back now to buy a second set for my girl.

Wonderful product, installed the software plugged in the headset to the USB port and boom it worked to perfection. Roger Wilco worked perfectly. And unlike other reviews the switch between the headset and speakers is flawless, one click and switch the output device from headset to speakers and there ya go. For you gamers out there looking for a high quality headset this is the one for you. A+++++

I am fairly happy with my experience with this headset. I think it's a good value for the money. I pretty much agree with the previous reviewer, chrisf911, on the upside/downside of this set. If I had to go back in time and buy a headset, I'd be happy to buy this set again.Disclaimer: I have not used other high quality headsets to make an informed comparison, nor have I tested this set with all varieties of activity. I have used to for mp3 listening and game sounds; and have found its performance adequate in both cases.

With the lowered price at amazon.com, it's worth your money to buy the DSP500 even with the minimal flaws it has. The software is good and the volume control is awesome for gaming.

After purchasing the DSP-500 from Amazon.com (which saved me LOTS of money!), I installed on my XP system. I had to visit Plantronics website to try to get my speakers to work again. Like other users have said, switching between headset and pc speakers are a pain! Not like the external switch I've been use to. Tech support was friendly, but pretty much useless.

I like this product. I had the labtec 713 USB before this and it had good sound but this is better. I play AAO and this gives me a definate advantage. It is a little uncomfortable after about 2hrs but other than that its ok for comfort.

If you play video games where sound is important; for example, counter strike, you will LOVE these headphones. You can hear EXACTLY where people are. They are AWESOME, best headphones I've ever used, better than any [expensive] pair if you are just gonna play games. Microphone is excelent too.

If you do, this is the perfect headset for you. Imagine someone walking _BEHIND_ you, you can actually feel the bass _BEHIND_ you and you'll be able to turn 180degrees and bust a bullet in his head. =) That's how great these are. THe bass is THUMPIN'.

Advertised as gaming and the Playstation 2 has a USB port that allows other headsets to function fine. When I tried to use these I found out they do not work. Contacted Plantronics and got a plain and dirty response back that they are not compatible - that's it. No sorry, explanation of any options. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Long story short, i bought a Koss CS80 off amazon.com an it hurt my head after 15 minutes of use. It broke and the company tried to scam me out fo my return. I then purchased a DSP500 and it has worked perfect with all of my needs.

The quality of this headset is beyond comparison. Nothing else comes close. For those not able to install XP drivers...well, have you considered quilting instead of computers?
