Having recently bought a sim-free Lumia 930, my now favourite mobile (I love mobile phones. Have used on contract a SG1, upgraded to SG3, and now with Xperia Z2). I needed a tablet for home and outside general app use, web browsing, movies, music, maps - but with a pick-up and go build. A tablet that wasn't too big to carry around anywhere, but had a good decent screen size. Good durability and simplicity was a requirement due to being used by myself and others. It was only when I looked at my 920, 930 and my partners broken iPad I realized I didn't need a tablet! I needed a 'Phablet' - phone/tablet combination. They do everything a tablet does, but also a phone, this giving me the advantage of both. I like something top specked so considered my maximum price £350(got a excellent reduced price here on Amazon); The iPad Air 32GB/4G/Wi-Fi was going for £449. The Nexus 7 32GB/4G/Wi-Fi for £329. The only advantage was a larger screen both! Looked into Lumia 1520 going for £349 new! After looking in what a tablet is mainly used for: browsing web, reading, Netflix, music, shopping, showing and taking photos/video, various types of apps, and just general fun - It was then I looked at how 'phablet' Lumia 1520 and Notepad 3(though I've always hated Samsung build quality)would be perfect in size, use, and to carry around and share. Finally went for the Lumia 1520 for various reasons(not getting into a vs battle)and from my worry easy free experience with Lumia 920 and the lovely 930.

Other reasons which decided for me why I went for 1520:

*Great screen with a sharp 1080 HD display and excellent viewing angles.
*Solid build with durability that feels premium.
*Fluid and smooth OS with security and no worries of viruses, glitches, spyware, crashes, temperamental/glitchy at times (Android still does all these even on my Z2!)
*Perfect size for movies/web browsing/apps on the go or just sitting at home. Can be carried in your average size/depth pocket and easily be carried around with you in your bag/handbag or even by your hand(I've got small/medium size hands and its fine my hand - though not for one hand use).
*Updated to W8.1 - and more updates to come.
*32gb with expandable memory using MicroSD.
*Excellent 20mp camera and Nokia camera lenses/editing.
*Nokia apps esp HERE Maps, HERE Transit, HERE Drive, HERE Explore(recommended) - the best navigation with off-line maps available in many places around the world.
*Excellent battery life
*Glance Screen(pull it out from your pocket, or wave your hand over screen; shows you dimmed view of time/email/notifications - useful in dark places for quick a glance at your phone without needing to turn it on, useful in cinemas)
*Great size for holidays, travelling by foot, or on vehicle transport.
*Wi-Fi and 4G.
*Just like all Lumia's its fast and fluid.

Overall the 1520 OS feels natural and fluid on touch. Has a screen that's almost the perfet size for both home use and travelling on the go with solid build and feel. The ease of transparency across W8 devices and the ease of use come together with both W8.1 OS and Nokia quality, and a good battery life too. With Lumia 1520 you get the best of both worlds of tablets and phones(with only larger screen of tablets the advantages of tablets). If thinking of getting a tablet ? Do consider a phablet! Esp the 1520.

A few great apps that might interest you:
*1#TOOLKIT (all tools and conversions in one place
*627.AM (alarm, notes, weather on one rotating tile
*CALCULATER TOOLBOX (all the variety of different calculators in one place)
*CHRONOAS CALENDAR (great informative and customizable calendar)
*CONNECTIVITY (info on battery, data roaming, remaining hours, network, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/gps/data/setting toggle on/off all on one tile)
*CAR DASH (if your driving you need this with easy access to contacts, home address, destination, music(can use voice commands), weather info, apps, on/off switch for data/Wi-Fi/rotation lock/bluetooth)
*GMaps+ (for all those who need Google Maps)
*LOCKMIX (excellent for various info/rotating photos you can put on your lockscreen
*myTube (Youtube but better)
*NOKIA MIXRADIO(excellent app for a vast selection of music with on and offline listening options. Keeps you updates with artist you like)
*(NOKIA) HERE EXPLORE BETA (Excellent all in one local places and interests with HERE Maps integration - on market app type HERE to find it!)
*NOKIA APPS FOLDER (put apps eg:Video apps, Music apps, Note apps in one sizable tile)
*NOKIA STORYTELLER (shows you where photos where taken, timeline, story video, favs, photo folders)
*NOKIA JOBLENS (jobs around your area)
*NOKIAEXPLORE BETA (everything around you - shops, restaurants/take aways, atm/banks, hospitals..etc. This app seems much better then Local Scout)
*POUCH (save web pages to read later when no network is available)

Плохо

I bought this huge smartphone right here, on Amazon.
This is a great phone, with many great features and functions.
But, like anything out there, it has SOME flaws, which I will now cover.

SCREEN...
It has an amazingly sharp, bright, and well-coloured screen.
The 1080p screen is absolutely flawless in every possible way.
It's super-sensitive to the lightest touch. (It responded to my earphone cable brushing against it!)
And the colours are full, deep and rich, on the well-lit 6-inch massive screen.
Looking at the screen side-on, and at other angles, shows NO dark areas at all.

STORAGE...
The phone comes with 32gb's of it's own internal flash storage, which is used mainly for Apps, System/OS updates, movies, music and pictures.
Though, seeing as the phone uses the phone storage pimarily for apps and updates, I HIGHLY recommend you buy a large-capacity Micro-SD card (32gb or 64gb Max) for your pictures, movies and music files.
(You can set the phone to save photos and movies captured, to the installed Memory card)

NOTE: When the 'WP 8.1' update comes out, you will have the ability to save all of your apps and things previously ONLY storable on the phone storage, to your Micro-SD card!

CAMERA...
The camera on this phone, is 20 Megapixels, which captures some truly amazing shots.
Nowhere near as good as the 41MP camera on the Lumia 1020, you understand.
But the pictures I have taken, have been chock-a-block full of detail, with no noise or grain, when zoomed into.
A slide of the finger on the Camera icon whilst in the 'Nokia Camera' app, brings up a selection of filters, to adjust the light, contrast, etc.. levels to your liking.
all so you can capture the perfect picture. (Honestly. it's really good!)

APPS...
The Lumia 1520 comes with the usual Windows/Lumia apps you would find on most other Lumia's out there, for a lot less money.
You get the mobile version of Microsoft office, to do spreadsheets, Word documents, and Powerpoint presentations.
All three incorporated programs run as good as the pc versions.
You get a pre-installed app called One-Note, to make basic notes and teminders.
As well as other standard apps, like an Alarm Clock, Media Players, Bing News, Help+Tips, Nokia Care, Internet Explorer, Nokia: Beamer/Cinemagraph/Creative Studio/Glam Me/Panorama/Storyteller Beta.
(Cinemagraph onwards, are all different photo-editing apps and camera lenses)

MEDIA PLAYERS...
As well as two media players.
The one being 'Nokia Mix Radio' which lets you play your installed MP3's on your phone or MicroSD card, as well as download offline mixes of artists/bands.
(You have the option to download different genres, decades, and moods, for free offline playing)

And the other media player is 'XBox Music + Videos' which lets you play videos you add to the phone or Micro-SD card, or phone memory.

You can play captured videos, and view your photos, in your Camera Roll, via the 'Photos' app, which is pre-installed.

USER INTERFACE...
The User interface of the phone is very simple and easy to pick up, from the get-go.
The first lumia I had, was the more-basic, budget 520.
And this Lumia 1520, like My old 520, was JUST as simple to set up.
I switched it on, set the language, and a few other basic settings, and I was ready to go in a handful of minutes.

Once done and set up, you have two different types of screens to use.
the MAIN screen with all of the colourful 'live tiles' of things you would use every day.
(Phone, Text messages, email inbox, notes, and other things)

And if you swipe your finger left, on the main screen, another screen appears.
This screen shows ALL of the apps installed on the phone, as a long list.
You can scroll up and down this list, and simply tap on the app you wish to start.

And to add it to the main phone screen, you tap and hold your finger over the app in the list, until you get the option come up, to 'Pin To Start'.

And once there, you can press and hold the tile, until the tile fades out and wobbles slowly.
In this mode, you get the option to 'unpin' (Remove) it from the main screen, or resize it, by tapping the small bottom right arrow, to resize it in three different sizes.

The tiles all updates, move, and change regularly, if you are connected to Wifi, or your 3G or 4G service.

FUN AND GAMES...
Playing games on this phone is amazing.
I play all the classics, such as Fruit Ninja, GTA San Andreas, Cut The Rope, JetPack JoyRide, Plants VS Zombies, and many more.
The graphics are super sharp and run smooth, with NO lag at all.

VIEWING...
The large 6-inchscreen is perfect for watching tv or YouTube videos.
I ALWAYS have them in full HD, and the phone never struggles or buffers anything.

FLAWS...

This is my first windows phone. My last 2 phones were an iPhone 4 and a Galaxy S4.

Phone:
Size: It is a big phone. I would always recommend that if anyone planning to buy it, go and have a look at it. If you don't see this model have a look at 1320. However the size is relative. When I moved from iphone to GS4, I thought GS4 is big. After using it for a few days, I felt the GS4 to be actually the right size for a phone and iPhone was too small. Now, after using Lumia 1520 for a few days - I have got used to it and though it appears big it doesn't look out of place. I have used this phone in public and I didn't see anyone really bothered - maybe all of us getting used to the bigger phones. It might not fit into a tight jeans pocket though.

Build quality/screen - The build quality is excellent, the screen is excellent, possibly the best I have used till now. It is responsive, smooth and sensitive. The best thing about the screen is that it is actually usable out in the sun (GS4 is terrible).
In some previous reviews I read that buttons does get pressed very easily as they are located where you would hold the phone (phones left side). I am using Tudia slim protective case and I didn't have any such problem.

Camera: I have used it for a few days only and the picture quality is better than iPhone 4 and GS4. I took a few pictures indoors and in low light and it was impressive. The camera lets you adjust a lot parameters, but if you are mainly a point and shoot person like me then you might have to spend some time to learn its full functionality. I am sure the result will be even better quality of picture as auto mode delivers brilliant picture already. One thing I am missing is an integrated camera app. Nokia provides a number of apps for photography and editing. It would have been much better if they were integrated into one single app.
Overall, I am impressed for now with the auto mode photography.

Software: This phone came with windows mobile 8. In my opinion windows 8 is a nice change from ios and android. Although those two os appear more complete then windows mobile 8. I don't regret moving to WM8 and rather enjoying it, however, I felt that it very much depends on how you use your mobile (my primary use - reading books and documents, camera, making calls, text, listening to music, YouTube, web browsing and very little gaming). The app store is definitely poorer than other 2 us and you may not readily find a lesser known app as easily as on ios/android.

The web browser is good but it struggles to display some websites properly (both desktop and mobile versions). It is not browser specific as it the same for - IE, maxthon and nokia's browser (xpress). Hopefully WM 8.1 will sort it out.

Nokia radio: nice free little app, plays music based on your choice of artist/genre. You cannot choose the song. Spotify is better.

Here map - again very good, but google map is also equally good. It might be better than google but I have to check few more days. In satellite mode google map has better resolution.

Calender: I was not happy with the inbuilt calender as I couldn't read the entries in month view. Sorted it with a 3rd party app.

Social media: people hub is good, get all the notification and address book in one place. Apps are available for major players like -facebook, twitter.

Reading books - its a joy, big screen, easy to read, even outdoors - not missing my kindle.Nokia reader is a good rss feed reader. Kindle is there.

I am still exploring the software part.. So far so good.

Battery life: I expected a better battery life with the huge battery it has and I am not disappointed. It has easily beaten my GS4. It went almost 2 days with moderate use (occasional YouTube, lots of kindle reading, phone, surfing and listening to music. I spent a lot of time on it (a shiny new gadget, how can I leave it lying around?).

Sound: I would say good. I don't have a very good understanding of music as some people do, but to my ears - it was good, loud enough and soothing. The speaker is on its lower back side.

Video: Beautiful, big screen, powerful processor.. what do you expect?

My impression of lumia after using it for 3 days: it is a big mobile phone, but a well built nice phone. The size is relative and we get used to the size by using it and it is not really a problem. It is comparable to some of the best phones out there and in some aspects it is better (battery life, screen). You will be disappointed if you love shopping apps, but it will serve you well if only use apps for a specific use. I am hoping that WM 8.1 would address some beta like features of the present os.

Великолепно

As anyone can see from the amount of phones I get through (it's legal and keeps me out of the pub), the new 1520 is a total thumbs up for many reasons. I sold my Note 3 (yes with Galaxy Gear), HTC One x 2 (including the Dual Sim) and finally the iPhone 5, to step up (the experience of owning/using a Lumia 1520 can only be described as stepping up). Here are my reasons;

1. Build quality is top drawer. Lumia design proves you don't need shiny bits of metal finish to look and feel good. How many iPhone 5/S owners can say that after 3 or 4 months of rattling around in their pocket? They chip and scratch like a fifty year old painted tin can. Even the beautiful HTC One's alloy cut edge around the screen marks and chips like mad. No problem with a Lumia 1520 or indeed their 1020 (yep, have one of those too - only because of the camera, that didn't get sold on when the 1520 arrived).

2. Screen. What a screen. It is large of course, but nothing prepares you for the amount of information you can see in one glance, (check out how little you can actually fit on an HTC One of Note 3 screen after comparing with the 6" Lumia. Better still the Lumia is very readable outdoors, the others are not.

3. Audio. Earpiece and speaker volume are LOUD and rattle/distortion free. My 1020 audio is low via the earpiece which is a pity. The 1520 is very very loud.

4. APPS. Bar SONOS who have to be the laziest manufacturer for offering their customers an app to control their expensive home audio, I am not for wanting anything else (The Times maybe). Every time I buy another Windows 8 phone they have added yet more apps and improved the operating system. It all just works. Skydrive for example is so good at auto backing up your photo's, video's, files etc. Easy and free.

5. Battery life - 3 days! Considering you are buying one of the most powerful phones with the biggest screen on the market today, (just look at the spec), and indeed the fastest Windows phone available, you will be very impressed with the battery performance. You will get a day at first but over 4/5 charges it's up to three.

6. Camera. This is extremely good but not as good as the 1020 Lumia. However, unless you are shooting hi-rez images and want to zoom in, you won't notice the difference between the 1020 & the 1520. In low light it's very good and way better than the Note 3. Video is great too but I will concede that the 4k video of the Note is crazy. (read the best).

7. Wow does this thing fly on 4G - 37MB download and 15MB up. That's faster than most UK homes broadband. O2 are offering an amazing deal on 4G at the moment so check that out too. (5GB & 4G upgrade for free to existing customers via their retentions team).

If you want your phone to be light and compact, look away. People may think you are Dom Jolly owning such a large device at first but just think how often you use your phone to make calls these days. Web browsing, Facebook, YouTube, photo's, movie watching is just unbeatable on the 1520.

Finally, if you are thinking of buying one, mine came from Gooddeal4you via Amazon. They were the best price, delivered within 3 working days. They come from Hong Kong but are full EU spec and accept all the latest updates including the important GDRC update to the latest Black release from Nokia.

Would have been quite happy to pay £550 but at £380 you would be off your trolley to buy a Note 3 and suffer poor receive performance, inaccurate Android keypad entry and the odd crash every other day.

May 2014 UPDATE - Installed Windows 8.1 onto 1520 (& 1020). It seems Microsoft are making it very easy to access & install their latest 8.1 release ahead of it's official UK date.

The main improvements are:

A. Huge Calendar function improvement. If there was a weak spot before this was it. The new layout and user interface is excellent and gives even Samsung's offerings a big run for its money. If you use your 1520/1020 for business this is a very real requirement and 8.1 have nailed it with the upgrade.

B. "Swype keyboard". Used on Android for years now on 8.1. Works perfectly and speeds up typing by 3-50%. Great addition.

C. Finally different volume levels for APPS & Media / Ringing and notifications. Plus assign different tones to each app

D. Swipe down notification centre - just like IOS & Android. Okay so the others have had it a while but W8.1 has caught up and just makes WM an even better experience.

Lots more - just Google W8.1. If you want to know how to do it it's easy and takes no longer than 60 seconds to install the relevant upgrade paths. PM me.

---Phone dimensions and screen size
Being a phablet most people will know what they're getting into when purchasing this device. Simply put you get a 6.4 inch device with a fantastic looking display. While its size isn't for everyone, the advantages it brings can be significant. Everything from watching movies, typing, reading and web browsing is second to none and this is mainly down to its fab 1080p screen, great looking colours and its 6 inch viewable screen.

One criticism is that windows OS could do more to make use of the larger screen size, for example some text is just blown up rather than scaled gracefully however this isn't the devices failing.

Screen can be a little sensitive but you get used to it pretty quickly, at first I found when scrolling I would select hyperlinks etc rather than moving the screen.

Finally the glace screen is quite cleaver, for those who don't know this is a feature that turns on a light image of a clock and notifications to save battery and not require you to engage the entire screen thus saving battery.

----Build quality and handset design
Out of the box this thing is amazing. I bought the 520 for my wife and worried it would be quite lightweight and plastic feeling but was pleasantly surprised (not that the 520 isn't an amazing phone for the money and is the reason I bought the 1520). Its a little heavy but only a touch and feels premium and good in the hand.

The handset is typically Nokia in design with a polycarbonate back and gorilla glass v2.

Another criticism is the sim card and SD card doors on the left of the device rattle a little and would benefit with a closer fit. However the rest of the buttons are positioned well and have a ceramic feel to them.

---Battery
Pleasantly surprised and while the battery is massive its needed for the monster display you get, I easily got 20+ hours of med/high usage the fist day with 39% left (excluding gaming but i did watch a few episodes of tv). Note; i also didn't make any significant attempts to conserve battery as i wanted to test normal conditions.
Charges quickly, and some of the battery apps from the windows store are very good.

---Windows store and OS
Windows does take some getting used to but the live tiles are, imo, much better than the standard apple/android OS and on the bigger Lumia with three rows of tiles this interface shines. My frustrations are mainly around the lack of notifications within the OS and some missing features / short cuts and I had to download external apps to compensate. Don't be worried however within an hour I had everything my android had and more!

Windows also gets a hard time because it doesn't have millions of apps. However the apps that are there are what you need and not the proliferation of 2nd rate android/ IOS developed ones. I actually have more apps than on my android device but some are necessary to compensate for the windows OS itself.

---Camera
What's more to say than its arguably the second best camera available on a smart phone. Takes great shots but can be a little slow when using focus and image stabilization. Video quality is good but can suffer from motion blur due to auto focus and stabilization if moving a lot.

Nokia apps preloaded are amazing and pro camera is second to none imo.

Front mounted camera i haven't used yet but at 1.3mp it could be better however I personally would not use it much.

---Performance
Fast, smooth and i have noticed no slowdown since having the device. Games run perfectly, websites load & interact smoothly and videos and media look and sound great. Its everything I would expect from a flagship device and more.

---Overall
100% satisfied with the device and only have some minor criticisms, much less than any other device i have purchased in 15 years.

If you want a large screen phone and to retire the tablet then this is the phone for you, although its positioned as a work phone but makes a better media device with is screen and expandable memory.

Ужасно

bought this 2 years ago and had odd behaviour from the start such as that stupid Cortana (which I don't want) switching on all by itself in my pocket. It seems impossible to disable Cortana as well.
It keeps asking me to sign in to my Microsoft account for every entry I want to make on quick notes.
The calendar only saved 3 months worth of data and last year all by itself starting to only save one month of past data. There is no color coding on this calendar either. You can only see the filled in slots of the day so difficult to see at a glance how much is still free in a day (such as in Outlook)
As this is a Microsoft phone I bought this phone so I could have an Outlook similar calendar on the phone ... how disappointing. This calendar seems to have been designed by some one after getting fired and still working the notice period, such poor design.
The screen now freezes all the time, the images shudder regularly. I have to keep rebooting.
The route finders is not able to give good directions anymore.
The battery only performed well for about 6 months and after that worse and worse. it drops dead after a few hours now so I need an external battery all the time.
The screen resolution is great and the camera sort of too. But Samsung is better.
I have Nokia phones ever since 1994, a Communicator for 6 years (still the best phone ever) and switched to Iphone in 2010 and then back to Nokia as this was now a Windows phone ... well, everything Microsoft may have made up a mess off in the past; they made a good attempt to combine all their rubbish in one phone :-)
NEVER buy this.
The Apps are also limited. A lot of hotels and conferences have apps for Android or Iphone only so loosing out there too.
Conclusion: stick to Samsung like my wife :-)

Плохо

I purchased the phone after spending a long time looking around. I liked the 6 inch screen. It was one of if not the biggest screen available on the market then. When I first received the phone it came with the old Windows Phone 7 operating system. I found that this was okay. But soon after Windows Phone 8 was available, I immediately installed it. I liked all the clear tiles that would enable you to have your own picture on the background. But this was always distorted by several popular apps such as Facebook and twitter that did not have the clear apps. It was a good idea on Windows Phone’s behalf. But it does not do it justice if all the app developers do not follow and update their app icons.
I found that the app store was lacking and several popular apps such as Snap Chat or Instagram, where either not there or in Beta stages for months. This leads you to use 3rd party apps to get onto Instagram or Snap Chat.
I loved the design and the layout of the phone. The pictures that it took I just could not find anything to compare to on the phone market, although the image sizes where quite large. The phone was thin and it has the distinct cornered edges and the matte back cover.
The screen has a setting to make it ultra-sensitive, this enables you to be able to use the screen whilst wearing gloves, this was a great feature and I have not been able to find a phone that compares to it in regards to picking up the touches made.
The one thing that really puts a grind on the phone, and was ultimately the reason why it was replaced was the app store. I am personally an app-aholic and on my previous phone to this I was constantly downloading new apps. But the Windows Phone app store, it is seriously lacking. There was just too many times when I would see an app, and it would only be available on the iPhone App Store or the Android Play Store.
I really did like this phone. It was different and it made a statement. But ultimately it was the lack of apps that killed it. If Microsoft where to implement a feature where you could play android apps in the future, I would seriously look at going back to it. But for now, I am using the Note 4.

I first saw this phone and the 1320 at an exhibition in the UAE back in October last year. I fell in love with it immediately.

This is the best phone ive ever owned by a mile and is the phone i have been waiting for.. almost forever.

Beautiful crystal clear screen, terrific 20mp camera with Carl Zeiss lens (Camera not quite as good as the Lumia 1020, but better than everything else), very good battery life and housed in a very slim stylish body. The phone has 32gb of storage, goes a long way, but i have installed a Sandisk 128gb Microsdxc card in mine, so i can keep all my music separate and leave plenty of space for apps and video. It also includes Office 2013 for those of us who have to do some light work whilst on the go.

I'm running Windows Phone 8.1 Dev Preview on my 1520 until its properly available in the UK. Its working like a charm. 8.1 has so many improvements over 8.0, i couldnt go back to 8.0 now. The only drawback with the Dev Preview is I am currently having to set my region to US so i can use Cortana (digital assistant). Shes excellent and i use her daily for reminders, traffic news, finding stuff, identifying music (who needs shazam?). Shes fully integrated with Bing and it just works excellently.. Im also having fun with general chit chat/jokes with Cortana - these havent grown tiresome yet. The Dev Preview also gives you access to the excellent Remote Desktop app in the store so you can remotely admin your other Windows devices from your phone, must have for me.

I have more apps than i can use and then some. I've got every app i need and every app i want except for two...

Sky TV - I have the Sky everything.. but ive reached the point where i am going to can them as im frustrated with them in general. No app just seals the deal.

Amazon Prime Instant Video - Get your finger out Amazon.. you keep sending me emails, inserting flyers for me to subscribe... well im ready but i need WP8.1 and Windows 8.1 app and i'll subscribe immediately. I already have Netflix, dont you want my cash?

I have Windows 8.1 desktop PC's at home and Surface tablets, everything all works together perfectly, all neatly integrated into Microsofts excellent cloud services with a modern intuitive user interface. Just like the advert says.. you get the same experience on every device. Since i switched away from using Google, I am now living a life with far less ads and without being tracked, datamined and monetised by the Google mothership.

If you are thinking about buying this phone, don't think... just do it. You won't be disappointed.

There's a wonderfully premium feel to the polycarbonate body in the hand, it elicits strokes from everyone who has asked to hold it.

And 'everyone' is just about every single person who has seen me use it. In the week I've has this phone I must have been asked about it 20 times... do not get this phone if you don't like people asking you admiring questions!

The screen is obviously large, but I haven't had any problems at all in using it to text with either one hand or two. There's a learning curve in that the keyboard placements are further apart than your thumb is used to, but you compensate very quickly and now it's completely instinctive and I'm back up to my normal speed.

The speaker on this phone performs in proportion to the rest of the handset. It is so much louder than any phone I've had before that I keep forgetting the volume doesn't need to be cranked up, and alarms and message alerts subsequently make me jump out of my skin. Volume at around 1/3 of maximum is roughly comparable to maximum volume level on my previous phone.

Windows Phone 8 is excellent, I already much prefer using it to Android. Live tiles are great! I thought I'd miss a notification centre but every notification is presented on the live tiles, so you just look at the screen and you instantly know what has come in. It feels much faster to use than Android too. I haven't found the app selection lacking either, though there are still some holes. There's no native Sonos remote app, for example, which I do miss. There's an excellent unofficial alternative though, and that seems to be the rule on WP8. If there isn't an official app, then there will be a selection of unofficial ones that do the job instead, though sometimes you will have to accept that it won't be as slick as the official app.

I want to mention how superbly Windows Phone handles social media. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google notifications are all tied into your People hub. It's hard to describe how awesome that is until you try it, but I already don't ever want to go back to how Android does this.

I don't game much on my phone, but I downloaded Asphalt 8 and Fifa 14 just to see how games looked and they look and play fantastically. The larger screen really helps with gaming on a touchscreen as there's less chance that your fingers will obscure the action.

Call quality and signal strength is excellent, the native music and video player is great, the free Nokia satnav and Maps apps are OUTSTANDING, all the Nokia local information and location specific guides are great.

I highly recommend this phone. It's big, it's beautiful, and in the official Nokia case (also great) it'll stay that way. The best phone I've ever owned by a long, long way.

Once upon a time Nokia were the mobile phone that everyone wanted. The tiny Nokia 8210/VT - SIM Free was drooled over.

Then a big bad competitor came along with the iPhone Apple IPhone Black 8GB Unlocked Sim Free Mobile Phone Slowly everyone lost interest in Nokia and drifted towards Apple or similar type products (Like the Silly Samsung who pretended they were an original idea but simply copied and improved)

The Nokia was sad. No one loved them. Everyone said they'll go the same way as Blackberry. (and that made them cry)

Then one day the Nokia woke up. It was no longer sad. It had gone from an ugly duckling. (N96) To a beautiful swan.

Everyone with a brain exclaimed, "Oh the Nokia 1520 is simply the best mobile phone."

And it killed the iphone.

And they all lived happily ever after.

The end.

Ok, maybe not the end. Perhaps the start? This is Nokia's attempt at capturing a segment of the smartphone market.

IS IT BETTER THAN AN IPHONE
===========================
Large? Yes it's large. But not too large.
Photography? It takes stunning photos. As good as a compact camera, in fact better than a compact.
And yes it's better than the iPhone. Much better.

INTERNET
========
Searching for something online is much better. Quicker. And just looks better on this size phone. The display is amazing. Clear, Vibrant and distinct. I think it's better than an iPhone.
It also uses 4G. Here in Liverpool, that meant that I got blistering fast pages on the O2 network.

BATTERY
=======
Remember when you had a mobile phone and it would last for days. Then the iphone came along and there was an expectation to have a charger at home, in the car, at school, in the office. This lasts for ages. Ages! I was on day three and it still had 30% left after a fair amount of use.

CAMERA
======
Wow. That's what you will say when you take pictures with this beauty. Awesome results. Wow.

USER EXPERIENCE
===============
This is the first iPhone competitor that I think is better. The windows experience seems to work on this. It's flawless.

APPS
====
It had the apps available that I want to use. I'm a little bored of "Has it got access to 500000000 apps?" No. Most people I know have the same apps: Shazam, angry birds, skype etc.

WOULD I GO BACK TO IPHONE
=========================
I have to admit that I do like my iphone. It works. It's good. But it's small. I'd not noticed that before. Until this beauty came along. If the iPhone 6 comes out with the same form factor then I'll consider it. But for now (January 2014) this is currently THE Best phone that's available.

RECOMMENDED
===========
Yes. I hope you enjoyed my review and if you have any queries please feel free to add to the comments where either I or other 1520 owners can respond.

Fantastic phone. At first I thought it would be simply too big, but this is definitely not the case. I'm only 180cm and it fits in all my trouser/jacket pockets without problem - after a couple of weeks it genuinely doesn't seem large at all. It's very robust too - I use it without a case or cover and have had no breakages despite dropping it a few times.
On the software side, the GUI is simple and clear. I use it for web-browsing, sat-nav, taking photos and reading e-Books. All this software is included or free and the display really makes everything a joy.
I work in IT with Linux and we have a MAC at home, so have no bias to any technology - it's simply a great phone (even after 2years)!

As a piece of hardware, this phone is incredible.

Such excellent built quality, a real premium feel. The screen is excellent and a fantastic camera as expected from Nokia.

Unfortunately, the lack of some apps/functionality leaves it feeling a bit unfinished. But overall, a great handset which does the basics so well.

I have owned many smart phones over the years and they have always been predominantly Android (with a couple of Iphones) - so I consider myself pretty well versed in those platforms.

I decided to take the plunge into Windows Phone mainly because I wanted to try something new. The 1520 seemed perfect - had the most advanced specs of any WP handset (1080p screen, quad core snapdragon 800 processor, adreno 330 GPU, 2gb ram).

First off this is a huge phone - my advice is you definatley need to check it out before you buy one. It is undoutably one of the most beautiful looking and feeling handsets I've seen (especially in white) but if you can get over the size you will be treated to one of the best displays I have ever seen.

This phone is quick and I mean really quick - yes the animations of WP hide a lot but it never feels like it is slow or lagging EVER.

The camera is simply sensational again the best I have seen (bar the Lumia 1020 and its ridiculous sized sensor) - 20mp is more than enough coupled with the decent manual controls over the camera settings (focus, white balance, shutter speed, iso etc).

Apps - now this is where the first of my issues began. Yes there are lots of apps now in the store and more and more of the bigbnames are jumping onboard BUT the omission of any Google apps is very clear even with third party alternatives. The other problem is the quality of the apps when compared to their Android or IOS counterparts - it's just so far off it feels like you've been cheated.

As mentioned the interface is simply gorgeous especially since I upgraded to the developers edition 8.1 which brings a host of new features and will likely get even better with official releases. However for me the interface is just too restrictive - in many ways like IOS but less 'polished' overall. It does have great potential and I am excited to see what else comes out from Microsoft and Nokia's new merger.

Ultimately the 1520 is an amazing device for anyone looking for a smartphone with an easy to use interface, amazing camera and display. For someone like me coming from years of Android the interface is just too restrictive which is why reluctantly I sold mine after a week and bought an LG G2.

I am much happier for now being back with Android but wont be ruling out WP in the future.

When I unboxed this phone I wondered if I had made a mistake. It seemed so large it was hard to pick up. Being brand new I was petrified about dropping it or even touching the screen. A wrist strap would have been welcome. Ironically I solved the size problem by making it slightly larger. Via the simple expedient of buying a case. Orzly from Amazon. Under £5 including postage. Beautifully made, it transforms the handing of the phone. It is now easy to hold, easy to make a call on, easy to set as a stand. The whole lot slips with room to spare into an inside jacket pocket and is a lot thinner and contains a lot more information that the Filofax wallet I used to use years ago. Like the Filofax it also contains the cards that I need. So, whilst absolute size is subjective, I can truthfully state that with the case and after a couple of weeks familiarity size is no longer an issue for me.

That leaves me with a superb phone which really does fulfil my aim of not needing to carry a tablet as well. The screen size really is a revelation. Web pages can be read. Film flies. My Kindle is redundant. The camera is very good. A 64GB SD card means that there are no storage issues. There is no fear that the whole lot will not upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 when it is released. That revision should make more use of the screen estate.

The so called "app gap" with IoS and Android is non-existent as far as my needs are concerned. There is nothing that I genuinely require which is not available in the Windows store. The actually operating system is streets ahead of the other two. Try it and be amazed.

My only real criticism is that there is no Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) connectivity. That means I cannot connect a Bluetooth keyboard. Which deprives me of some of the benefit of the built in Office applications. Those are terrific. All recent files from whatever device appear and others can be opened from OneDrive. With the ability to connect a portable keyboard one would have all that one needs to be productive on the move with one pocketable device.

One other caveat. The international version that I bought from Amazon did not say so but is actually sourced from Hong Kong. running the warranty screen draws a blank. Whether this matters I cannot say.

I know, I know - it's not cool to admit to liking anything Microsoft but we're all grown-ups here, hopefully. Shiny Thing Fanbois needn't read further.

The phone's a big old thing - but the screen is superb for colour and definition, readability and use with documents. Integration with Office / Outlook / OneDrive is super. Windows Phone 8.1 is quick and intuitive. Sure, there's not the choice of apps you get with Android or iOS, but for my needs that's irrelevant - there are apps to cover what I want, and as I suggested above, being a grown-up helps.

Music playing is excellent, and the killer app may just be the Nokia mapping - you can download maps to the phone for offline use.

Wherever this phone is mentioned on the Web there are people asking whether the 64GB microSDXC card drive will support 128GB cards; I can report that it does. Put a 128GB Sandisk class 10 SDXC card in mine this morning and it shows it fully available in both Windows Explorer (when phone connected to PC) and on the phone itself. 160GB of storage on a phone is stonking stuff.

VPN implementation - essential for security when connecting to open wifi networks - is pretty much cutting edge; so much so it's difficult to find providers who offer the necessary IKEv2 protocols in their service offerings. Best I found is Hide.Me - see https://hide.me/en/ . Easy setup, works seamlessly, no app to download (it's baked in to Phone 8.1).

I recommend this if you don't desperately need a small phone. The phone I replaced is an HTC One (the M7 variant) which I'd always thought of as a big phone. It feels very small and cramped after the Nokia!

OK I am a terrible amazon shopper. Often items pass me by due to my hesitant nature, however i love this phone. It is only my second smartphone after a long 2 year affair with a Lumia 800 ( his name was, Brock Samson )

So this was a big purchase for me, not only in sheer size, but economically.
I live in the UK and apart from buying Star Trek socks from the official store I had always purchased 'in country'

The phone arrived, bang on time.
Neatly package and with the advertised accompaniments.

It is now almost 4 months later and i finally found the time to properly thank and endorse the seller.

Thank you, I love this phone.

sincerely

Aron
