I have paired it with a NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4 VR lens (for landscapes and cityscapes) and a NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8 lens (for portraits) and after a month of shooting I am very happy with the results. Next on the list is the 24-120mm f/4 for travel / general walkaround photography.
The only (minor) CONS for me so far -
(1) the shutter release is much louder than a DX body (even louder than the D610)
(2) it doesn't have a built in remote release mode. You have to buy an add-on accessory that mounts on the hot-shoe which is a little annoying
(3) it is slightly bigger / heavier than the D610
All-in-all i love it!

Pros:
Excellent high ISO performance. High-resolution full-frame sensor. Fast focus and performance. Excellent viewfinder.
Cons:
Slower to focus in Live View. Must initiate autofocus manually during video recording.
A good idea to compare to this Sony to get an idea of the difference in spec and price: http://amzn.to/1yYmBhz

The uncompressed RAW files hover around, 75MBs and the lossless compressed are about 35MB which makes file management a tad more user friendly.
The image quality and detail does require a bit more attention, slower shutter speeds will blur but that should be expected with any camera. I do think it does require a little more attention than other cameras but the results are well worth it. High ISO shots are very usable unless cropped or pixel peeping.
I purchased the AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 and the AF-S 50mm f/1.8, both perform admirably on the camera. From reading other reviews I was a bit worried that the lenses wouldn't perform well with the camera but had zero issues.
I looked at the D600, which is attractive with good reviews that say that it is close to the D800, but the AF difference, tougher build, more bracketing, multiple exposures and intervalometer I think make up for the cost difference.
Pros:
Awesome AF, IQ, resolution and handling
Cons:
Large, heavier than entry level DSLRs, huge RAW files.

You can shoot up to 1/8000 or crank your ISO up to 6400 (I don't recommend going higher than that). I love that I can do fun stuff to like HDR or even time laps! The video capabilities on it are off the charts! My ONLY real complaint with it has been the focusing. The auto focus isn't as fast and accurate as I would like it to be. But now that the D810 is out, you can pick up one of these used for around $1700. That's a steal!

I have loaned it out to friends who have canons, some who say they hate Nikon, (the hater guys just couldn't take a descent picture with any camera even a fifty grand Hassleblad.) we all know the top of the line Nikons and Canons are great and you can't make a wrong decision.
The batteries last long enough to fill 2 64GB cards, but it depends on what lens you are using, larger lens require more power than small prime lenses.
If it were a little faster and lighter it might just be pretty perfect.

It doesn't use the same batteries as the D700
but the main thing about the D800 is it does not work with all cards. I have a multitude of Duracell cards that are now useless to me.
