This is a great starter camera for any photographer who wants to move from a point and shoot to a DSLR. I love this camera, the quality is great, and I have been nothing but pleased with it so far.

This was purchased to replace a Nikon D40x and what a replacement it is. HD video is unreal, pictures are unreal and so easy to use. 100% happy with this purchase.

A professional photographer quick-review: I tried different lenses on the D5100 camera: the kit lens (low quality), some old 35mm Nikon prime lenses and the high quality Wide Angle 10.5mm. Results: the old prime lenses gave the sharpest results as usual but none of the Nikon lenses I tested came even close to matching the ultra high resolution I got from the Canon Rebel T3i with the included kit lens. Other than the softness, this is a great camera for low light situations.I don't know why this camera is softer than the Canon but I am not the only one experiencing this issue, you may compare both cameras using the "Comparometer" online which clearly confirms my findings. I am guessing the T3i Rebel has a better sensor than the Nikon and that is a real pity because I would have preferred to use Nikon. The good news is that the D5100 performs far better than the Canon in low light conditions.By the way, the 1080p video test I shot was unusable, the D5100 does not have anything close to the kind of optical stabilization required for video production and I am not going to carry a tripod when I can use my Canon HV20 camcorder instead without any trouble, it just would not be practical.Despite all these shortcomings, I still would recommend the D5100 for telephoto and low-light still photos (such as wedding photography).Update: After further research it turns out that all Nikon DLSRs in this price range are famous for producing soft images which require sharpening in post. Indeed, I looked at my D60 photos and they are also soft. However, there are rumors that Nikon has plans to switch to a different type of sensor to keep up with the competition. So, maybe before 2012 Nikon will bring good news for all Nikon fans, that is, if the world does not end in 2012.

Right out of the box using the same lens (18 - 200 VR)this camera takes better pictures than my previous Nikon D80. I bought the body only. I am a family photographer and the D5100 is the ideal Nikon camera for me. Simple to use, lightweight, video if necessary, and well priced. I considered the D7000, but in reality, I would never use the added feature set and have instead bought a 35mm Prime lens and an extra battery and am still $300 ahead! Photos thus far have been great, without the frustration of obvious exposure issues I experienced with the D80.

I was looking forward to receiving this camera. When it arrived, there was no sealon the camera package, and the components inside were obviously opened before.You can make your own assessment, but to me this is very wrong.I sent it back and hope I get a new one back.Later:I contacted returns, and they promptly accepted the return.I will report back.3 months later:I am very satisfied with this camera. It requires quite a lot of study to use it properly. The photos are beautiful.Recommended.

Easy to learn, love the features it can perform. The lens' are just as simple. Don't have to be a pro photographer to use this camera, just go out and shoot. Light weight easy to tote. Quality pictures without spending thousands of dollars.

I know im coming from a limited point of view, but this camera is amazing. I never knew I could take such beautiful pictures. My wife complained about the expense until she saw the pictures of our kids on vacation that I was able to take that never would have looked even acceptable on our old point and shoot.I cant speak to how this camera compares to others in its class, but IMO, its in a class of its own!

Firstly, Amazon's delivery was very fast. I had the camera 4 days after I ordered it with standard shipping. Great job.The Camera itself is a great step up from what is now my secondary camera, the D60. Focus is nice and crisp, and even on the Sports setting, the camera is lightning fast. There is a lot to this camera, so read the manual first ! ! I also purchased a battery grip for it, and you will find that does make up for the camera's compact size (the only drawback I have encountered so far).Great job Nikon.

After have used it for a few month, I love it. Just report one problem -- depends how do you hold the camera, you may or may not have this issue.The way I grip it, my palm often touches the multifunction selector unintentionally. And the selected focus point (I prefer the center one which is the only one with the cross type) just moves to the edge one -- so annoying!Anyone knows how to solve this? Thanks.

I was very happy about my Nikon D5100. The size is prefect for someone like me who has a pair of small hands. The graphic is very beautiful and the flip monitor is a big plus for video taking. However, when I try to take continuous shots, the continuous release mode doesn't work at all. I tried many different ways, but nothing helped. I am wondering if anyone has the same problem with this camera. Otherwise I really like this camera.update:Problem solved

Love the camera with one exception. If you are an amateur photographer like me and have been using Nikon for years (I bought my first Nikon, a Nikkormat, in 1965), you probably have several lenses. Some of mine are not very old, I bought them after getting my first digital body. Be aware that only the latest generation Nikkor lenses will be able to auto-focus with this camera. Your older lenses will still work, but you have to manually focus when you use them. I was aware of this when I bought the camera, but though my more recent lenses would work, they don't.

I am not going to lie. I've dropped this Camera 3 times since I bought it Nov. 25 2011. 3 times! ! ! First two drops were off a table... all drops were on carpet... but I just picked it up and tried to run off with it to take a quick picture and it was still attached to my computer... and slipped right out of my hand and SLAMMED on the floor. My heart stopped.It's perfectly fine. No problems. Checked the lens, checked every setting, checked the screen, buttons, not even a scratch.This is a good semi professional camera to add to your gift list for that person who has butter fingers like myself. <3Oh... did I forget to mention it takes outstanding photos. I mean... the lens has a lot to do with how amazing some photos turn out over others, but with just the standard kit lens and some of the basic knowledge I am still learning... my photos come out amazing!I highly recommend this camera for semi professionals... heck...even professionals <3

I am still experimenting and getting used to this new camera, but thus far have found it exceptional both in value and ease of use. I highly recommend this camera for both beginners and experienced users.

I've had a D700 since it came out and have 10's of thousands of fabulous pictures from it. Simply the best camera I've ever had....but the thing is a horse! Strap the 70-200mm f2.8 on it and I'm popping Advil that evening because of the weight. This of course it the price you pay for the highest quality pictures you can get.Because of the weight issue I've been thinking about getting a compact. I've tried several Olympus (ZX-1, PEN 1, PEN 2) and found them shall we say lacking in clarity (they just can't stand up to D700 quality and seem like a waist of time). I wanted to like the P7000, but all the reviews say its a POS. So, I started looking at the weight of some of these new DSLRs and thought that may be the option for me. The DP Review rated it quite well, so I figured I would give it a shot.Well I have to say that I'm extremely impressed. I love the weight and the simple controls. The articulating screen is sweet and extremely useful. After I put some decent glass on the thing (the kit lens is a POS!), I have got some fabulous pictures with the thing up to ISO 3200. The color output is really amazing. Very contrasty and requires little post-processing (I only shoot RAW, so I couldn't tell you about the in camera jpegs). I think this is from the EXPEED-2 processor and bods very well for a D800. There is a fair amount of noise reduction, that really softens things too much, but it's easy to take out with capture NX 2. Overall, I would say that the picture quality is 80 percent of the D700 up to ISO 3200. This is more than I ever expected for a $800 camera (versus $2500 for a D700).Bravo Nikon! This is quite a camera and thanks for saving my back!

All of my digital cameras have been point and shoots since I quit using my Olympus 35 mm camera. This camera is totally amazing! You don't have to be a good photographer to get wonderful shots. I bought the 18 mm to 105 mm lens. I am loving taking photographs again....THANK YOU NIKON for such a great camera at a reasonable price!

I have read 100+ reviews of cameras and talked to aficionados of all camera types and this one (and its predecessor 3100) always ranked in the top 2. So far I am very satisfied with how user-friendly it is!

I received my camera within the time stated and I have been enjoying it ever since. I am currently taking a class to help me to take full advantage of all it's features. I am very very pleased with the the Nikon D5100.Thank you Amazon for making it happen.John

I am not an experienced photographer just wanted an awesome camera . This camera will take me a while to figure everything out but i am very satisfied with it :) light weight great special effects absolutly in love worth the money great investment. In the future ill have to get more lenses :)

This is an amazing product!it's a fast camera, it's rought and toough made, the tilt screen is an amazing feature for video guys and ISOs are so clean, love the fact that it feels so good on your hands and the grip has an amazing feel, just like any oter pro camera.i carry this camera as the everyday to go camera and the pictures have this really huge quality plus the 4fps feature it really helpfull!I totally love this camera! an amazing camera!

Best digital I have owned! I am a semi-camera pro and own Sony, Canon, Kodak, Olympus and a few others and have been most happy with Sony until Nikon 5100. Wouldn't trade it at this time for any other!

I was a complete novice to DSLR technology when I purchased the D5100. But after EXTENSIVE research through many websites including [...], I decided to go with the D5100. WOW! I couldn't have done better for the money! This camera produces awesome pictures. The battery lasts a very long time. The multiple exposures speed is very quick for this level of model. My ONLY change to this model would be to add the Auto Focus motor to drive the AF on non AF-S lenses. I know the D7000 can do this with the same sensor. I just couldn't spend the extra $$$ at the time.I was convinced to enter a few of my early pictures into a local photo contest. To my disbelief, I took first and second place!Buy this camera, you won't be disappointed! Just please do yourself a favor, and take a beginning DSLR class or ? to get yourself out of the AUTO mode and into Aperture or Shutter Priority modes.

I bought my D5100 in September of 2011 and not from Amazon.Overall I am very pleased with its abilities and the quality of the images it produces.It came with a DVD that was very well done which has tutorials on some of the key features of the D5100. It does an excellent job in low light situations as long as the subject is not moving. I photographed our indoor bowling tournament with no flash, under available light, and the results were quite good. The HDR (High Dynamic Range)is useful and does a great job. Many of the D5100's features I have yet to explore.On the downside, the LCD screen is nearly impossible to see in direct sunlight. The continuous focus doesn't handle subjects moving from one side to the other, and the selective color effect isn't pure. The battery does not last as long as you would think. If you are photographing anything important, a second battery is a must.None of these issues are a deal breaker for me, and I would recommend getting a LCD protector and UV filters to protect the lense.I would definitely recommend this camera.
