This camera doesn't replace my Nikon D90 (I actually have 2 of them and love them) - but it is a great "smaller" camera to cart around when I don't want to lug the D90. It isn't much smaller - but it is a little lighter and smaller. I haven't tried all the features yet - but I have been very pleased so far. The picture quality is great. I would have rated it 4.5 but I couldn't give a half star. The thing that drives me crazy is that in order to see a photo that I just shot - I need to have the flip screen open. This annoys me because with the D90 - I just look down and see it. The flip screen is taking some getting used to. However, having a swivel LCD screen also has benefits. I purchased the D5100 because it is rated very high when compared to the Nikon D7000. I wanted the D7000 but it is currently more than I am willing to pay. The D5100 gives me the higher megapixels, etc. that the D90 doesn't have and better and more user-friendly video recording (I don't use the video features often). This will be my "travel" camera. I am going to Bermuda in the spring and will be giving the D5100 a workout there. I only used the kit lens a couple time. I have placed my Sigma 18-200mm lens on this camera. I like that it uses the same lenses that I have for my D90.UPDATE: I have to take back what I said about being annoyed by the swivel/flip screen - the camera is fairly new to me (and none of my other dSLRs ever had a flip screen), and I did not know that you were able to flip and turn it so you could snap it in backward so you could see it. Thanks to the reader below - I tried again. I had not tried that particular twist and flip sequence before. I still would rate the camera a 4.5.

For a semi professional DSLR camera this is just awesome. Easy to use for a beginner user like me. Extremely recommended for everybody.

my nikon came quickly and is exactly as described. I've already used it until I killed the battery, uploaded my pictures and charged the battery again. Everything works perfectly!

D5100 is a perfect camera for anyone who is upgrading from a point & shoot or entering to DSLR photography. There are many reasons why this camera is perfect1) Has D7000's sensor2) 11 focus points3) 1080p video(didn't like the auto-focus though)4) Side articulated LCD screen with 930k resolution5) 4 FPS is not bad6) Lower noise at higher ISO7) External mic8) IR remote supportI can go on and on. I have been in a confusion to choose between D3100, T2i, T3i, D5100, D90 & D7000. Since this is my first DSLR camera I spent most of my time in reading reviews and watching review videos to know what are the important features of a DSLR.D7000 is a pro camera with loads of features but my use is gonna be kinda limited for now thought I could use the money to invest in lenses.D90 is a better camera in all aspects when comparing to D5100 but it has old sensor and image quality isn't the best comparing to D5100. I needed a camera with good video quality too so D90 is also out of my list.D3100, its one of the best entry level camera with good picture quality, guide mode and video features but you will soon outgrow with D3100. It doesn't have few important DSLR features like bracketing, external mic, FPS & IR remote support which was top in my mind.T2i/T3i has lower hand when I compared the picture quality with Nikon D5100 and T2i's mode dial doesn't move 360 degree. But canon has MUCH better video quality, Built-in focus motor, larger pentaprism viewfinder, dedicated ISO button and still I went with D5100 because of the image quality, lower noise at higher ISO, beautiful color depth, longer battery life, more focus points, decent video quality, side articulated screen & enough functions for a DSLR newbie with this price range.My complaint is the D5100 body is kinda cheap plastic feel and its little small to my hands so I am going to get a battery grip. And yes I hate to go around with D5100's menus for each and every setting but I paid less for D7000's sensor and a decent pack of features for one of the best mid-level DSLR's around. No regrets!

I purchased the camera as a Christmas gift for my 18 year old daughter. She loves taking pictures. After much research I narrowed my search down to Nikon and Canon. I chose the Nikon for all the extra features the Canon did not offer and I got a great deal on a bundle that included the 55zoom lense attachment. My daughter and I are so happy with this camera. From the quality of the pictures, ease of using all the extra features, to the great bundle deal, I definitely would recommend the Nikin D5100.

Excellent but I still haven't learned how to use all its features. Still trying to load software to enhance pictures.

I had never owned a professional camera before, and the Nikon D5100 was my first, as it was priced right for newbies. At first the camera was intimidating, but it took a lot of patience, learning and practice to really make my way around the camera.For instance, it took me forever to learn that using the LIVE MODE on screen LCD was killing battery life quickly, and causing a really slow shutter. I now look through the peep hole and take shot after brilliant shot, without any lag whatsoever.I learned how to use the HDR setting, and have had a ball taking mint shot after shot in that setting. I do however HATE that I must set it to HDR again after taking just one shot, I wish it would remember my setting and leave it there till I change it.Night shots are easily done now, with a bright flash, and fast response.I am not a professional, as I stated, but I am in love with the results I have gotten from my camera. I would not trade this one for anything. I am an official Nikon fan, and hope to only learn more and more as I go along.

This camera is AMAZING! Having the same sensor as the higher end D7000, this DSLR performs incredibly well. Take some time to research and compare and you will find that this is by far the BEST camera for amateur enthusiasts to enter into the world of photography without breaking the bank and sacrificing image quality. I HIGHLY Recommend this product!!!

This Nikon D5100 replaced a Nikon D40 that had died. It's several generations improved, and has features that I didn't even expect, such as the intervalometer. Video is certainly icing on the cake as well. The discounted price was too low to pass up. Also, Amazon's service was truly amazing. The order was placed on 12/20, and the camera was delivered on 12/24, free shipping! My only complaint is that the delivery person didn't knock or ring the door bell, so we didn't discover it until later sitting on the front porch in plain sight.

What I liked:1. Excellent image quality even with kit lens (I got some brilliant HD videos too with D5100 - I had to edit the audio though to handle the crappy autofocus sound ).2. Reasonably priced (after the price drop, of course)3. Decent build quality (I do not know whether any other under $650 contemporary DSLR comes with better build or not)4. Nice feel and fit5. Built in IntervalometerI had read the specifications, many product reviews , comparisons and checked sample images (posted by professionals and casual users) So, I don't think it is justifiable to add some Cons like 'D5100 don't have this feature or that button' (and I can not take one Star off for that reason).I am not facing any back focus or black image issues - I already posted some images- . Kit lens images too are clean and sharp.If D5100 had the following features too, it would have been THE BEST under $650 DSLR in the world :1. DOF button2. Dedicated buttons on the body for menu driven features like WB, shooting mode, bracketing etc3. Wireless flashPersonally, I liked Nikon D5100 DSLR and am very happy with the image quality this camera produces.

The product arrived incomplete. It's missing parts DK-5 (eyepiece cap) and DK-20 (rubber eyecup) in the box according to the manual.

What can I say, is perfect the quality for the money you pay, I take some pictures and looks very professional, I recommend this Nikon D5100 for the price and quality pictures

I love it..I had been using Canon cameras for years and when I went digital I choose Nikon for its ease of use and convenience of the settings...would highly recommend...

I researched cameras for a long time and finally decided on this one. For the price point, you couldn't beat it. Have been very pleased.....now I need to learn how to use it.

I travel a lot and mostly use my camera for travel photography. I started with the wonderful D40, so I lean towards Nikon since I'm familiar with the menus and controls. I have tried these cameras for travel:Canon G12 (401 grams) and S95 (190 grams) (very good but not wonderful picture quality bc of small sensor, very light and easy to carry);Nikon D7000 and D700 (964 grams w/ kit 18-55 zoom)(unbelievable picture quality but to heavy to carry for 6-8 hours of walking);Fuji X100 (440 grams)(great picture quality, very light but lens is fixed; andiPhone 4S (140 grams) (easiest to carry, fixed lens, but good picture quality under most conditions).At over 750 grams, the D5100 with 18-55 kit lens is heavier than most of these options and is almost too heavy to carry 6-8 hours. The padded Crumpler strap really helps, and I don't load up with any accessories (no extra lens, no flash, no extra battery, etc.). The quality, range and lightweight of the kit zoom is really what clinches this for me. The Fuji is amazing, but I find there are too many shots I miss because of the fixed lens. Plus, if I want to go super light and fixed lens, my iPhone is not a bad option.

This is a good camera for someone who wants to take good pictures but isn't ready to spend the BIG money yet. It takes some time to learn all the settings but it performs very well after you do. Nikon rates this model just below "Pro" but above beginner. It has received good reviews from several photography magazines because it performs as well as some of the higher priced models in several categories. The only difference is that is doesn't have dedicated knobs for adjusting settings and you have to go into the menu to adjust most of them.

With my limited budget I bought this Nikon D5100 body as a back up for my D7000. My plan is to keep the 18-55mm on one body and my excellent 85mm f1.8 on the other. (To switch cameras instead of switching lens). I heard both cameras had the same sensor but now I'm not so sure. The D7000 gives sharp photos with crisp, accurate colors. This is not so easy to get with the D5100 due to less options for customization. I bought this camera from a seller on Amazon in 'like new' condition. I'm still learning how to get what I want from this camera. I recently upgraded the firmware and this seems to help. So far I like the in-camera HDR feature and the articulated screen (wish the D7000 had this). I probably will buy an after market battery grip for this camera, as is, it feels too small for my hands. I would recommend this camera especially to beginners. Great for point & shooters, but if you want more control be prepared to spend more time in the menu.

Received this for Christmas and what a treat. I have used several very good Nikon digital cameras and am great to gain the power and flexibility of a DSLR. Still exploring all the options but have already turned out some great photos. It is great to have a camera which can handle low light situations as well as high speed photography.

I bought this camera as an upgrade from my (still awesome) Nikon D50. Overall the camera is just what I would expect, an incremental improvement over my 6-year old body. However I do have a couple of very critical marks for it:1. Nikon removed the AF servo. Now all of my "AF" lenses are "MF". Shame on me for buying it, but the next body up with modern features and the AF servo is $550 more and I don't know that Nikon will keep the AF servo in for the next generation. This leads me to believe I should be investing in new glass.2. Extremely cramped body grip. My hand is cramping up holding the grip as they have removed the extremely useful mini-lcd on the top. This means my hand wraps around too far and it is hard to hold on to the camera. The body is also not as tall as it used to be, again making it hard to grip. I have larger than average hands, but the D50's grip is why I went Nikon over Canon 6 years ago.3. Lack of mini-lcd on the top. Now I only have a back-lit display for reading camera settings which is not good at night when trying to preserve your vision.

As a experienced amateur photographer, this camera offers impressive quality and features for the money. You can't go wrong with this model camera. The only thing to watch for is it won't AF with lens other than Nikon.

I love my new camera, and am impressed with KEH, who I bought it from. I had a question for them, and called on a weekend, leaving a message on a man's cellphone. He called back that following Monday and was very helpful and professional.My camera arrived earlier than estimated, and the camera itself has proven to be a great little machine.
