For starters, I have had several point-and-shoot cameras with a varying degree of satisfaction. I took photography in the 90s, so my last SLR was a fully manual Pentax P3N. That said, I understood aperture, depth of field, shutter speed, light readings, etc., but the last time I used those words was 14 years ago, and required multiple devices and a lot of time in the darkroom.I was about to get the Canon T3, but decided to wait for the D5100 to come out - it was well worth the wait.Overall, it is the perfect balance of tech-nerd features and amateur ease-of-use. Every day I learn a new trick, technique, and feature. I will note that the paper manual is pretty slim, but the disk is better. Nikon's website is the best. For example, nowhere in the manual does it explain how to use HDR mode - it was grayed out for me and I could not turn it on - it turned out the camera was smarter than me. Because I was in the wrong mode, and inside a dark house, there was no way HDR would work, so it wasn't going to let me bother trying! One you learn to navigate the menus, it becomes second nature.Effects - the effects modes were what initially caught my eye - I had seen the Dpreview.com "preview" and was intrigued by the "miniature" and "selective color" effects. They work great, with practice (especially selective color - it took me a few tries to figure it out) but now they are second nature. The results are spectacular. The other effects are cool, too - they function as advertised and are pleasing and easy.Scenes - I had "scene" modes on other point-and-shoots, and was never pleased. The opposite is true here. The D5100 has a TON of scene modes, and all have been phenomenal. I try to avoid using the flash as much as possible, but certain photos require it - the D5100 scene modes consistently help to create balanced and sharp photos regardless of the circumstances.Video - all I can say is "wow"... at first I didn't "get" the quality of video...then I watched some raw video on my 50" 1080p tv...so good. The focus works well, it is fast and accurate. I have not used all the shooting modes, but I was impressed by the cinematographic quality of the images when using a large aperture and manual focus. I did not expect to have the urge to make movies, but I find myself playing with it more and more, then editing on iMovie.Overall, I would recommend this to any amateur photographer looking for a tool that offers amazing flexibility and limitless creative options. With a little bit of practice, and a good basic book on photography (I use Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera) you will find that you can make pro-quality photographs with this amazing camera.

I like the camera but the first time I took it out to use it, the strap slipped out, the camera fell and damaged my lens.

Bought this at a great price. Nikon was clearing inventory in an advance of the D5200. It has a lot of features I don't expect to use but that's what you have to accept to get the ones one wants. I was deciding between this and the D3200. The key features this had but were lacking on the D3200 were AEB and the movasble LCD screen which lets me avoid "belly photography" in some circumstances. It is an upgrade to my D60. Image quality nod definately better -- it's not just the pixel count -- specifcly lower noise (it doesn't change much from ISO100 levels ontill you approad ISO400), and EV range is about 2 stops greater.

I intend to use this for video interviews and general photography. My only complaint is short battery life for video and no AC plug in. Also no headphone jack for monitoring audio. Otherwise a very good camera.

Great Video Tool. I produce and host a local cable TV Show and we use a few of these in making our video for the show. Works so much better than I had expected. Looking to pick up a few D7100's next to work with these.

Amazing, love it! Incredibly sharp detail, crisp clear vivid images head & shoulders above the D3000, D3100. Every bit as good IF not better than the D3200...At 500.00 body only you'd be a fool not to buy this! Outstanding shots with the 55-200mm lens & 55-300mm

First off, I don't know much about photography other than what I learned from a high school photo class quite a few years back. So take this review with a grain of salt. That being said, the quality of my pictures immediately improved when I started using my D5100. I'm still learning about the functions, but am getting the hang of it slowly. One thing is for sure, my photos look really good. I do have a couple of notes for people:Camera does not come with a memory card. You'll need to buy one separately before you can take any pictures. You'll also need to charge the battery, which is included w/charger.Camera is way too big for use with a small Gorilla Pod. I had one I used for my old point and shoot camera. I was hoping it would be strong enough for both, but it wasn't even close.Auto-focus is ok, but can be a pain in the ass. I've been using the manual focus a lot.Indoor flash is pretty sucky. Luckily the camera is awesome and doesn't really need it as long as there is some light around. Can't wait to see what else this thing can do. I'm really impressed with the pictures so far.

I love my new 5100. I've been shopping for a dslr for about five years and finally bit the bullet and purchased one. I still go back and forth whether I should have gotten the 7000 but that doesn't take away from the 5100. Besides, the better investment is actually the lenses--with crappy lenses and an expensive body, you'll still get crappy photos. If I had to make the purchase again with the newly released 3200 at the same price point, I'd still go with the 5100 because in the consumer/prosumer market, I consider the 5100 an intermediate photographers camera and I wanted room to grow and not be stifled by the camera's abilities.

I had Nikon d40, a starter camera, the picture quality was amazing. After 5 years of use, I sold it just to buy this camera. This camera is definitely loaded with features. Much more pixels and bigger sensor, VR lens. But if you compare with Nikon d40 picture quality of this camera is not even close. I already started missing my d40. Stuck with this new toy. I had about 15 years of slr experience. This is my 4th slr and 2nd dsl. Ok to buy, if it is your first one. Or else skip it.

I just wanted to chime in here. I bought the d5100 today, and after owning a D80 for ~2.5 years, I'm simply blown away by the improvements. Effing Amazing! This camera literally can shoot in the dark. I stuck my 18-200 lens through my blinds in my back yard, and took a picture of the shed out there. No porch light, just the ambient light from the city around it. I was in night-vision effect mode, and the pic was black and white, and noisy as heck, but wow! I could actually make out what I shot! My poor old D80 would NEVER have picked that up! The continuous shooting mode is faster than fast, the video (which I'll likely seldom use) is sharp, and the most important feature? Well, kiddos, to me that's picture quality, and it blows the doors off of my previous camera. I'm really looking forward to putting this little gem through it's paces in the next few weeks! I'll be out shooting at a nature preserve, at the local park hunting for squirrels, and just here and there annoying everyone with it! I can't wait. This new toy has made me excited about photography again! The good:Great menu system. Big improvement!Smaller/lighter than the D80 (Fits into my slimline bag better)Picture quality is outstandingFaster responseVideoTons of new features to play withCool special effects modesThe bad:I have to manual focus some of my older lensesIt's smaller, which means I have to adjust to how it feels in my handsslight learning curve (But I'll get over it)I have to go buy some bigger SD cards if I want to take pics in full res with RAW, or I'll be filling up a LOT faster (OK, not really a bad, but still...)Conclusion: I'm not looking back! This is a GREAT camera and a HUGE improvement over my old body! Great work Nikon!

This camera was fairly priced when it first arrived in 2012. It has great features and is a clear step up from the D3100. In 2013, Nikon replaced the D5100 with the new D5200, and new and especially refurbished D5100 SLRs are now available at fantastic prices, often half the price of the D5200. The D5200 offers few new features to justify the higher price. If you're in the market for a mid-level SLR, do yourself a favor and get the D5100. No better value in early 2013.

The d5100 is an excellent entry to midlevel dslr. I've shot both the d5100 and the t3i (its competitor) and find both to be almost equal. If u are new to dsrls' u cant go wrong with either camera. The d5100 is solid but not to heavy. Controls are intuitive and somewhat easy to locate. The menu system takes about an hour to understand, but gives excellent visual cues to what mode you are switching to, and or what kind of shot you want to compose....great feature! The flip-out screen is clear and bright; it's nice for shooting video at low or high angles and self-portraits.battery life is long. The viewfinder displays all the info you need and is easy to understand. The "effects" mode is fun to use and creates interesting pictures. The video mode is just ok. The auto focus does great if your subject stays at a constant depth/focal length. But once your subject moves closer or father away the auto focus struggles to find and refocus quickly or at all. To be fair, even the d7000 (which is rated best by numerous pundits) struggles with this as well. If you are buying the d5100 to shoot video of kids or fast moving objects, you will be disappointed."Live view" (seeing the scene on the LCD display) makes for easy viewing and the controls to activate it are a finger swipe away. A+Picture quality is excellent. you will be amazed how clear, bright and vivid photos become.Overall the d5100 will meet all your needs (minus fast moving video shooting). Before i bought this level of dsrl i had only taken photos with a point and shoot. I read countless reviews about dsrls and worried that i needed to find the best rated camera with the most features. But since owning the d5100 i've noticed that i mainly shoot in auto or program mode. It seems that i can compose nice pics just by letting the camera set the aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Hopefully, as i advance my skills i will use more features?!?!?Hope this review helps.

We wanted to get a good camera before we have our first child. We researched a ton of different cameras and this one seemed to have the best reviews. I used to have an older Nikon 35mm and there isn't really that much difference. The video function is pretty awesome but you won't want to use the auto focus because all you'll hear in the video is the mechanisms in the lens focusing. There are a few features that are just gimmicks. One in particular makes photos look like a cartoon. Useless feature but it doesn't get in the way of anything important.

this camera is great one in terms of features and the picture quality. I liked it a lot , till when it stopped working. Suddenly the images became black. I was surprised, there was no change, I was standing still. took one photo, adjusted the focus and took another one, the image became blank. I searched the web, meany reported the same problem. This happened at the 8th month , got it repaired in warranty then there was fingerprints and black spots inside the camera, after the repair. Had to send it back again, got it repaired and then the "black image" issue came back. I lost my California trip completely . Highly frustrating. I was Nikon guy for so many years and never had problem with my previous camera , but this quality sucks. Now I realizes "Reliability" is the key in photography. I had to start fighting with Nikon support as the warranty expired 2o days ago.Paid $1200 ( including the lenses) . for a camera that lasts just one year ??? I am sad!But of course , I like this camera and its features .

The picture quality of the D7000 for a much more affordable price. Our pictures are our memories and they are priceless, no one would differ on that.If your budget is limited (as it always is) it is absolutely a better consideration to invest in picture quality than in functionality. And this camera gives one of the best compromise price vs picture quality. You won't be disappointed.

Purchased the camera to replace my aging (but still fully operational) Nikon D40. I was specifically looking for something with improved low light capabilities. This camera delivers that in spades. The camera combined with my 1.2 lens is letting me take pictures in locations and light levels that I didn't think were possible to do handheld. It is pretty sturdy, and not much heavier than the D40. Highly recommended if you are outgrowing your entry level camera and want a more prosumer type camera that can grow with you.Bonus: it can mount virtually any Nikon lens ever made. Usually have mine fitted with vintage glass...
