Hi,I just got off the phone to Netgear tech support. They informed me that the wireless card was slowing my PC down and dropping out because...It doesn't work with some AMD processors!!!!The tech guy told me to give the card back to the shop and buy something made by another manufacturer!I guess this explains why some people on amazon didn't have problems, while others have been tearing their hair out. What annoys me about this is that Netgear do not state that this product is only compatible with Intel processors anywhere on their website. I guess that leaving angry customers to figure it out for themselves is what they consider to be a professional way of doing business.I won't be doing business with Netgear ever again. There are plenty of other companies out there with a better attitude to sales. When googling "AMD Netgear problems" it turns out that the WPN311 isn't the only card with problems.Joel Green

All the support guys are trained to be nice, but they are not trained on the technology and are useless. After 3 weeks of waiting, calling, waiting, escalating, waiting, escalating, waiting, referred to engineering, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting. The product does not actually work with ISDN as advertised and no one at Netgear support has ever heard of ISDN.The device is really intended for a basic uncomplicated setup with Cable modem as the primary line and a regular modem as a dial backup or dial-in access method. For that, it seems OK.But for me, I'm packing it up and returning it because it doesn't actually work. Big disappointment. Lots of frustration.

I bought this at Radio Shack. It worked for a few days, reasonably well but not great. Then it just started losing the connection and having trouble re-connecting. I exchanged it for another and the same thing happened. Stay away.

One star is too many. Constantly drops connections, refuses to connect to secure networks. (Like Netgear's suggested fix. Just turn off wireless security. No seriously, that's their fix.)I've installed/supported wireless networks for over five years and this is the very first NIC that was just totally worthless. Works fine for 2-3 minutes and then stops dead.

Router is one of the fastest available. Great for P2P (BitTorrent, Kazaa, etc) applications. Almost everything works greatThe one thing that falls very short is the wireless capability. It works great only with wireless adapters that are from the same chip manufacture (Atheros chipset). When used with any other wireless chipset you may have a very hard time. This is not a surprise as all the other manufacturers such as Linksys, Dlink, Buffalo, Belkin that use the same exact wireless chipset have same problems (probably because of horribly written drivers). Upgrading the firmware helps a lot, especially if you have an Intel-based wireless adapter.Fortunetly or not, as mentioned other brands use the same wireless chipsets so if you buy any early 802.11N (all as of 2007) most likely will run into the same problems.

As soon as i added this to my XP machine - my RangeMax Router started freaking out and i had to reboot it twice a day (the least) - both of my adapters (WPN311 and WPN111) work great with a LinkSys router. Its a shame that Netgear products don't work with each other, when they are from the same like/package. Not very happy.

I bought the Netgear RangeMax router and the RangeMax USB adapter for a desktop on the second floor. The connection signal is constantly dropping. When I finally get some signal, it is always at "very low". Netgear claims that the range coverage is up to 500,000 feet. I have a 1000 square feet house; the signal is at "very low".The tech support is NOT helpful at all. After days of frustration, I am giving up. I will never buy Netgear product again. I would give it NEGATIVE FIVE STAR if I can on Amazon web site.Oh yeah, short Netgear stock!!! With crappy products like these, its shares go down further.

Snazzy. Bright. Pretty lights. Out-of-box simplicity. Beautiful start.Setting:Used as wired & wireless router & firewall.Router works OK. Firewall works OK. Wireless works good.Pros:Strong wireless signal, doubled distance of my prior high-end A/B/G wireless AP. Super easy Setup Wizard. Got wireless connection in about 5-minutes after unpacking.Cons:Can't have both Static & DHCP IP. One or the other, only. Configuration isn't logical, isn't solid & very slow. The more changes, the slower it gets. Password with symbols (Ex: $%^) confuses device into logging incorrect password -- had to reset back to factory default. Finally guessed what device wants my password to be! (NumLock, PadLock, FuncLock isn't issue here.) Port forwarding limited - limited number of entries (about 10?) & certain predefined port addresses (Ex 25) can't be modified. Excessive data transfers (Ex: IP cam video streams) over time will hang system weekly. Conclusion:For simple people who like simple setups, strong wireless signals, casual wireless connections, and decent protection. Not for advanced users looking for port forwarding, IP address flexibility, constant data transfers.Resolution:I want a single package wired & wireless router/firewall that's under $500 with signal reaching at least 3 average rooms (35'). Haven't found one yet. DLink, Linksys, Belkin, Airlink101, Netgear either couldn't make distance, failed, or had hardware limitation. Going back to old way: 2 device set-up, DLink DI-704* wired router (or DI-604*, DI-808HV works too) & Belkin N1 wireless. DLink router offers best in class WIRED router/firewall features. Belkin N1 offers best in class WIRELESS signal. Total cost for combo ~$230.Or, cough up about $2k for enterprise class single package wireless router. Saving my pennies....

I bought this product to replace an outdated Linksys WUSB54G adapter and to match up with my MIMO router. The product manages to do what its supposed to, sort of.Pros:Versatile - Can be used with or without a USB extension cable, so small it is easily portable. When it was connected, throughput was extremely high.Decent range, 75% signal strength over ~100ft. and through one wall.Cons:Device gets excessively hot.Inconsistent performance.Poor device support. When download speeds peaked, at over 22400 (2.8mb/s roughly) the device would cause the system to hang. A check at the Netgear forums revealed that I was not the only member with this issue, so I got the latest device drivers from the website. After installing them, I fired up a few files and for the first ten minutes or so all seemed well. Suddenly the device failed and lost connection to the router. A quick check elsewhere revealed it was only this device that failed, and now I experience near constant disconnects when throughput gets anywhere over 500kb/s. Same issue occurs with multiple systems.Tech support was unhelpful in resolving my issue.I would recommend the Linksys WUSB300N over this item, as I have had no problems since switching over, it installs in seconds, and I get a much stronger more consistent connection than what I have ever maintained with the WPN111.

First, take any review (even this one) with "grain of salt".Some of the objectionable ones here do not mention their OS, their system if updated, router type and brand, laptop or desktop, interference (under desk, ductwork or type of walls in path or floors from router, doing proper installation, devices that could interfere like cordless phones, cellphones, appliances, external radiation from location...)all this factors in as wifi is NOT the end to all means.Second, BEFORE you even connect this to your USB port, visit Netgear's website for download of LATEST driver for your system. Latest drivers I found are from Jan 2006 ver 1.1.You'll be surprised that inventory doesn't mean it was stocked last month. ALWAYS check the site first. Put files on a USB key or burn to CD if you can't get on the net from machine you are installing from. Makes sense, huh?Third, install the software BEFORE you connect the device. Make sure you have the correct settings for your router (hopefully a Rangemax or other Netgear, but not required brand) such as SSID, WEP or preferred WPA2-PSK key settings for connecting and login.Lastly, make sure to secure that wifi. There are laws that make you the liable if someone uses your connection because it is wide open. Mapping to MAC address plus WPA2-PSK is pretty solid. Please, read the manual if you aren't familiar with wifi setup. Or get someone to assist and show you. You can even have settings for different locale and wifi networks. This item worked for me with verygood-excellent range being on second floor of big home (atleast 30 feet from Rangemax router) and plugged into the back of a custom PC running WinXP Pro SP2.

So I've had one of NetGear's first routers, the MR814 and haven't been too impressed. The NG's wireless card that I got back in the day was so bad I returned it. In my house which is 3200sq ft and the walls are filled with insulation, getting range is a huge problem. So I did a lot of research and read various articles and for range it comes down to Belkin's Pre-N or NG's RangeMax router. From the comparisons if you want just sheer raw speed and maximum distance the Belkin was the way to go as long as you also used their Pre-N cards. I don't care for N, I've got 3 laptops with internal wireless cards, 2 PCs, and an Xbox in the house and the NetGear RangeMax wins when it comes to extending range for existing b and g devices. At the extreme end of my house where the TV is (compared with the location of the router) I could barely maintain a signal with the 802.11b router I had, 1Mbps connection at best. With the RangeMax at this same location my signal strength drops to only 80%, everywhere else is a full 100%.The other thing is VPN. I've found with some routers, specifically the MR814, some VPN software (e.g Nortel's client) has troubles making a connection to the vpn gateway, and even if you do connect to it (wirelessly) the speed isn't that great. I found with the RangeMax my VPN issues went away; it was like having the speed of when I'm at work. I also found that XBOX games are very sensitive to settings; I used to have to endlessly tweak my other router to prevent choppiness. With the RangeMax it worked perfectly out of the box.So I'm a happy camper. The main drawback I found was setup. It's designed for a total newbie/non technical person. For hard core tech users you'll find it frustrating getting past it's huge desire to make you run their setup wizards. Even though you can go directly to the admin screen, it still wants to do a bunch of detection nonsense, when I'd prefer to just set all the settings myself because I know what they have to be.My friend with the Belkin Pre-N said his setup was a breeze. But really you have only two choices if you want to do the multiple antenna MIMO route. The Routers using the AirGo Wireless chips (Belkin, LinkSys), or the Video54 chips (NetGear RangeMax). Realistically who cares about 108Mbps when your internet connection at home is 4Mbps at best (380Kbps-754Kbps for most people). Also for those that complain about not being able to replace the antenna. Ya that's a strategy used for single antenna routers. The RangeMax has 7 antennas (internal).. so if you had your way you'd add 7 powered antennas?!? On the AirGo routers like the Belkin you'd have to replace 3... that's adding a lot more wires (from A/C adapters) when you're trying to be wireless. But once you get past that you're rock'n and roll'n. Plus it has this funky blue dome on the top with an array of LEDs that blink with activity.. It's all star trek like n stuff, kinda cool in the dark to watch when you're really bored. :)Summary: Max Range + Max Speed + Max Budget - use the Belkin Pre-N router and replace all your wireless cards with Belkin Pre-N ones.ORMax Range on 802.11b/g cards - use the NetGear RangeMax.

**Update at the bottom**I must admit this is the worse networking product I've seen, and I don't know how Netgear product QA could have passed this for sales. There are several major issues with this product:1. It stops sending beacons on both radios on a random basis. This causes wireless connectivity to drop. The only way to solve the issue is to reboot the router. I used a wireless sniffer to see if the router was sending out beacons, and it wasn't.2. WAN connectivity drops frequently. The router recovers by itself, but I can lose WAN connectivity up to over a minute and this problem can happen quite often. I use my VoWLAN application all the time and my calls always drop. When WAN connectivity is not available, I have no problem pinging the router or accessing the router's config page. Then, I found Netgear techsupport to be totally hopeless. My support calls always end up somewhere in India. Although the techsupport technicians were always polite, their lack of ANY networking and 802.11 skills proved them to be useless. They could offer nothing other than instructions to reconfig the router and a case number. They didn't know what I was talking about when I told them the router stopped sending beacons, and of course they wouldn't have an idea about the difference between TKIP and AES when I asked them if the key resets were causing the router to freeze. Also, there is no way to escalate the case to anyone. The techsupport person asked me to return the router.Overall, I found this to be an extremely unpleasant experience. I have other Netgear products that are more simple in design and I never ran into issues like this. This is very unfortunate as I thought Netgear has good products. One last note, it doesn't matter what code you put on the router. I tried everyone of them, and none of them solved my issues.**Update** -- I ran some research on this product and found a D-Link router using the same WLAN chipset is also suffering from the same problems. Is it a coincidence? Or is there a problem with the underlying Atheros chipset?

Works fine until it gets warm and then the fun begins. The longest I have been able to stay online is approximately an hour. No wonder they're selling for $15 used on here...they're lawn wafers.I had no problems even remotely close to this until I plugged in this turd, so I know it's the culprit.Back to Best Buy it goes.

Just about the only thing good about this unit is how easy it is to setup. This AP is not worth paying extra for. I have personally demoted this "business class" AP to home use...which sadly doesn't even perform well in such conditions where multiple wireless stations are present in the environment (as with all multi-dwelling unit/condos)...even when it is literally less than 20 ft away. Contant constant connect/disconnects make it extremely unreliable. The "auto-cell" feature, which was a major reason for purchase, is deprecated. New firmware doesn't even have it (non-existent in the v2 release of this product).I'm not saying this unit doesn't work, it does, but it offers nothing more than a standard AP costing much much less. There are some features such as VLANs and maybe if that's a key requirement, then it can work for you (v2 models). However, if you're looking for performance/reliability basics in "harsh" environments, you will do just as good, or poorly, with any other "standard" home use AP.

I've had this router for a year or so, and I keep it very busy. Those that have posted bad reviews may have known what they were doing, but your success with this or any wi-fi router depends a bit on the compatibility with the wireless cards you are using. In my case, I found out the chipset in this router is Atheros, so I bought a wireless card with that same chipset, an 802.11a/b/g combo card. The same chipset in the card and the router means I get rock-solid connectivity, and it NEVER drops. This is the first "good" wireless connection I've had, and I've tried several miniPCI and PC cards (miniPCI) with several different routers (Linksys, D-Link, netgear). Having 802.11a is great - the speed and range is plenty adequate for my needs (all over the house and on the patio), and I can use 2.4GHz phones and they wont interfere with the network (802.11b/g uses 2.4GHz range and can cause decreased range/speed). The Netgear WGU624 does a great job!

I am between Mac Book Pros and wanted to add wireless to an old iBook with no airport card. A card for this costs between $US80 and $US150. i was about to bite the bullet when I did some research and found drivers for this adapter on the Realtek website, maker of the chipset, http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/It works best on PPC Mac right up to the latest OS. I have had no problems. The GUI app from Realtek is not the best designed but for the price its ok. I have used it on a secured and unsecured, and both Mac and PC networks. Be sure to get WG111v2 which uses the chipset from Realtek.
