We have had an Xbox 360 in our home since the system first came out and I can easily say that the last 6 years with this console has been the best 6 years I have had yet with a videogame system and that is saying something as I have had just about every console released since Pong was released back in the mid 70's. Microsoft, a company that I was never too fond of given the fact that I am an Apple computer user, has really done an outstanding job with this system. While there were some hardware issues with the earlier consoles, I can safely say that the Xbox 360 S is a top notch console with none of the problems that plagued earlier models. Its superior in almost every way to previous models. My single favorite aspect to this system is without a doubt Xbox Live and all of the things that come along with the service (you get 3 months included with this holiday pack). Basically Xbox Live gives you the ability to play games online and lets you download arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, music and movies. Out of all of the things that MS has done, putting so much focus on the development of Xbox Live is, in my opinion, the smartest thing they have done yet in regards to this console. Xbox live has really become a fantastic part of the Xbox gaming experience. In fact, I couldn't imagine Xbox without Xbox Live. In particular, both my son and I love Xbox Live Arcade. There is now a massive assortment of games on Xbox Live Arcade and the nice thing about the games, besides the lower cost, is that they dont require the time investment that most of the regular Xbox games require. Its a more casual gaming experience and I really appreciate that, especially during my busy season with photography as I simply dont have the time to invest in big games during that time of the year. I love that every game available on Xbox Live Arcade has a demo available so you can actually try it out before making up your mind on whether or not to buy it. Xbox Live also has an on demand game section, which are regular disc based releases that you can buy and download over Xbox live. I personally dont buy on demand games as the prices really aren't competitive and I just cant justify buying a download version of a game when I can actually buy the physical version for the same price or less. Of course, buying the physical copy gives you the ability to sell it later on. This isn't possible with downloaded versions. Given that aspect alone, on demand games should be at least 5-10 bucks cheaper than the physical version and unfortunately that just hasn't been the case and this is one area where Xbox live can be significantly improved.Xbox live also offers additional services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, ESPN, Zune, and LastFM. We currently use Netflix and ESPN and we love both services. Its important to note that Microsoft recently announced that 40 additional entertainment partners will soon be joining the Xbox Live experience including Comcast, HBO GO, Syfy, Verizon FiOS, Bravo, and Xfinity. This really isn't surprising given the fact that Microsoft has stated many times that their vision for the future of Xbox lies in it becoming a hub for entertainment in your home, not just a videogame console. With the announcement of 40 additional entertainment services being added, MS are now one step closer to making this a reality and I expect the list of services will only continue to grow over the coming years. Basically this gives people the ability to individualize their TV experience through Xbox live. I only watch about 5% of the channels I receive through cable, and pay a hefty price to be able to do so. So I am very interested in where this console is going in this regards.I also really like that MS has been focusing more and more on the family side of gaming as my wife enjoys gaming and we have an 11 year old son. In particular, we really enjoy Family Game Night which highlights a different family game every Tuesday. The number of games suitable for younger children has increased substantially over the last few years and the console itself has parental options that allow you to lock out certain content from your children. This includes games, movies and TV shows. I travel a lot so these options are very important to me. I dont have to worry about what content my son is accessing while I am away.As for regular gaming, Xbox certainly doesn't disappoint. There are so many great games available that I literally dont have time to play all of them. Just look at the games released, or being released, in the last quarter of 2011. You have Gears of War 3, Forza 4, Battlefield 3, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Saints Row 3, Batman Arkham City, etc. Those are just the high profile games. Of course, Xbox has a huge catalog of titles already available and many of those games can be purchas

This is my 3rd purchased Xbox 360. I got my first back 2006 it was the 20gb version and then another one in 2008 it was the 60gb version. All together Ive owned five xbox 360's. I got the red ring of death 4 out 5 of them. I hope that this one doesn't have any issues. To start with good things about this newer slimmer black version. Its slimmer, lighter, runs cooler. black in color and has wifi built in. It also has more usb ports and dedicated aux port for the kinect. I cant review kinect part of it that much since I still haven't done any gaming with it. Ive used it as a controller and also the voice control when watching Netflix. I found having the kinect connected slows down the Xbox and makes it work harder. So I just have it disconnected now. I play mostly first person and third person shooter games which cant use the kinect. I may explore the kinect later with the games its came with. Im glad the newer xbox comes with wifi finally but it doesn't come with dual band wireless. For that you have to buy the additional Microsoft network adatper for another $50. Another thing the xbox doesnt have is a blu ray player. It can only play dvds. As a media player it cant play AAC files or MKV files. Most of my music is from iTunes in AAC format and most of movies are downloaded in MKV format. The controllers on the Xbox are wireless but use the older 2.4ghz frequency. Which mean there can be interference, the distance it covers is limited and there is less security. The xbox 360 doesnt have Bluetooth. Which would have worked great for controllers and headsets. Also the controllers can use rechargeable battery packs but they use nickel cadmium batteries not lithium. The app selection is also lacking on the xbox it doesn't have slacker, pandora, spotify. You have to pay for the gold live membership to use the internet explorer, netflix, or play any games with your friends online. In terms of the online experience Xbox live is said to be far superior than the PlayStation network. I would hope xbox would be better since we have to pay for it. I mainly got the xbox since all my friends are on it and I play Microsoft games like Gears of War 3 and Halo 4. Both of which are great games and really show xbox's full potential. If you mostly play onlne and in multiplayer than xbox 360 is the console to get. Im very happy with my purchase so far and haven't experienced any issues with the console. My only other grip about this bundle is that it doesnt come with a headset. I know were suppose to use the kinect as a mic. But, I would rather use a headset and find it silly Microsoft excluded a cheap headset of this bundle. One last additon is the fact that you can install games to your hard drive so that the load times are quicker and the xbox runs cooler. But, you have to load the disk every time you want to play the game. I know this is the case for piracy reasons. But, I do wish they found another easier way of doing this. One example is on my PC I purchase a game and the first time I have to unlock it by punching in code to show I own the game. After that I dont need to ever enter the code or even use the disc. Im sure something like this can be incorporated with the xbox.

I'm looking past some of the obvious (and mostly resolved) reasons why XBOX 360 socks (or socked); like the RROD (hopefully not an issue with newer units), or the fact that the XBOX doesn't do blu-ray (and probably never will since its a Sony technology... to its credit it did do HD-DVD, until the format died) , or no built-in WiFi (which IS built-in on newer units). I'll get to the other, legitimate reason shortly. Don't get me wrong, I think games look and play great on it. Its a great CD/DVD player. And for some, maybe that's all that matters. Maybe I'm just spoiled by my "it only does everything" PS3 (and it does everything well).I had an XBOX 360 several years ago and though it was really great. The interface was simple and effective. Some games clearly looked better on the 360 than on my PS3. But I sold the 360 within a year because it was a real time waster. I just figured I'd be better off with just one system, and the choice was very clear.Fast forward to 2011. My mother mentions she heard about the kinect and the new dance games. She thought it might be a good way to have fun and get some exercise. Ok, so I get an XBOX for her house. I can play Robotron 2084 when I'm there. I got it all up and running in no time and was pleasantly surprised to find that all my old purchases were still there, ready for re-download. After 5-6 years... wow, never really expected that.Right off the bat I could see that the interface had changed significantly. Imo, for the worse. Avatars? WTH. Fine I'll create a stupid avatar. At first I created a male, since that's my gender. After a day or two I got tired of looked at my stupid male avatar and changed to a female, picked out all the features that I wanted, sort of like my ideal woman, and dressed her up "nice". If only I could download some lingerie or fishnet stockings. Hey, if I have to have an avatar, at least she's good looking. Another word about the avatars... can they do anything interesting while they are just standing there, besides looking at the bottom of their shoe? Word to MS, If you're going to force Avatars on everyone at least make them interesting. So I managed to kind of adjust to the new interface, though I didn't really like it. Fast forward another two weeks when I get back to my mom's house and decide to do a little exploring on the 360, maybe play a few rounds of Robotron and Food Fight. XBOX says "Update required". Ok, lets get an update! Maybe it will be an improvement! Worst decision I ever made (like I had a choice). I thought the old interface was bad enough, but the new one just set a new standard for bad. Honestly, if my mom didn't play those dance games I would outright sell the stupid XBOX, dump my avatar girlfriend, and never set another virtual foot in the 360 realm. Saynonara... Domo Arigato Mr Robotron. Why do I have to go to the marketplace to watch videos or TV shows I bought? Why can't they just be on my XBOX.. there ready to watch with one click? Stupid. Why can't I just play the one music video I bought from the marketplace? Why does it get added to a queue that never stops playing unless I remove it from the queue? Stupid. Why are all the marketplace choices only viewable in a linear style, scrolling left to right endlessly? Why not have an option to view them as an block array? Stupid. I could go on, but in general I think the interface is just plain dumb, unintuitive, requiring too many clicks to get to something, and ruined by stupid marketing and attempts to get more of your money. It doesn't stop there... Why is netflix only available to Live Gold members? Stupid and wrong. The stupid MS point system of merchandising (80 points = 1$) Why? Why can't I assign a controller another number than the default one? What if a controller dies mid-game and I have to fire up another one? No can do. You'll have to restart the game. Why can't I buy a bigger HD and easily install it myself? Nope.Maybe I expect too much from a gaming system obviously geared towards a younger audience. I just want to easily access my stuff and play my games, maybe listen to some music and watch a video I bought... but its all greatly impeded and complicated by a crappy front-end.Update: I don't think my mom is even using it so I'm probably gonna sell it.

Ужасно

My advice to current XBox owners: Never purchase a new console. Always send your old one in for repairs. This will help you avoid the aggravation I have been forced to endure.Back in February, my old XBox console started having longer load times and randomly freezing up. Realizing that it was several years old, likely on its last legs and long out of warranty (meaning I'd have to pay to have it repaired) I decided to purchase the newer S model. I also bought the hard drive transfer cable, moved all of my content to the new one, then ran the license transfer process to assign all of my downloadable game licenses to my new console.Except... it didn't work. For some reason all of my content is still assigned to my old console. If I purchase something online, my download queue shows the message "Assigned to other console" and will not download it. Even if it's a new item I've never purchased before, it still gets assigned to the old console. Also, I now have to be signed in to XBox Live to play any previously downloaded games on my hard drive. If I'm offline, it shows up as the trial version, since the paid unlocked version is still assigned to my old console.I have tried clearing the cache. I have tried deleting my profile and downloading it again. I have tried deleting the latest system update from my console and downloading it again. I am unable to attempt the license transfer again because of Microsoft's ridiculous limit on how often it can be performed. Which I understand is to prevent chronic miscreants from jumping to new consoles without penalty every time their current one gets banned, but in my particular case it kind of completely sucks.Microsoft has proven themselves spectacularly useless in helping me get this fixed. The first support representative I talked to was very friendly and assured me the problem would be fixed, but it could take up to 72 hours. Perfectly satisfactory answer. I wait three days. Nothing happens.I call back and am told by another equally friendly support rep that, no, it actually takes up to 25 days. Why the first guy told me 3 he does not know, but all right, fine, I will wait 25 days, what other choice do I have.25 days pass, and... still nothing. At this point I am exceedingly tired of this nonsense. Back into support chat where friendly support rep #3 helpfully asks for... my console ID for the new system. Because apparently they need it to do a manual license transfer. And they cannot obtain it on their own. And for some reason did not, oh, I don't know, actually ASK me for it during one of the previous two chats. So now I am waiting ANOTHER 25 days for them to resolve this. In the meantime I am stuck with a not insignificant amount of purchased content that I must be connected to XBox Live to even use. I'm sure anyone who has ever purchased a PC game with invasive DRM that requires a persistent online connection can understand my frustration with that.At this point my confidence in Microsoft's ability to fix this is pretty much zero. It feels as if they are utterly incompetent and dragging their feet every step of the way. I have been a loyal Microsoft customer for years, and am not asking for anything big. I just want my content back, the content which I own a license to use. I just want what is mine. That is not too much to ask.I will post an update on April 20th, which is the end of my current 25-day waiting period.I wish I had paid for a repair and gone without my old console for a few weeks. I deeply regret buying this new one. This could happen to you.UPDATE, 5/10/2012:See the comments section. Amazon has a 1000-word limit on reviews. And oh my gosh is there ever more to tell. Seriously, get popcorn.

The following review is something I actually wrote and submitted for a PS3 system, but since I was comparing and contrasting the PS3 to the Xbox, I felt like it might be useful for potential Xbox consumers as well. the bottom line for the Xbox is that if it had a BluRay player, it would get 5 stars.I have been an Xbox user for years. The PS3 is a system that has always intrigued me, though. It is always louded as the higher level technology especially with the BluRay. It had integrated wi-fi before Xbox, and the online interactions don't cost money (you don't *have* to pay to play online). And so, for these reasons, I bought a PS3 250GB system. Here are my thoughts on it.Pros:As I've already mentioned, the PS3 is a BluRay player as well as game consol. You can watch movies and play games in 3D (which sometimes can make an okay game epic, or other times make you sick to your stomach - those with vertigo be warned). You can surf the internet right on your TV. And you can play online multiplayer games for no additional cost.Cons:Now, I want to point out the issues that I have. The aesthetics - even though your main home screen isn't exactly ugly, I don't feel like I was just warped into a game universe like I do when I turn on my Xbox. the menus on the PS3 are bland and unexciting. They are easy to use, but unexciting with their and 2D format. There is no "wow" factor there. Also, the PSN isn't anywhere near as socially friendly (that I can see) or interactive. So, even though online gameplay is free it can be cumbersome. There hasn't been an online game that I've tried on the PS3 yet that hasn't taken at least twice as long to log into the lobbies and the actual games themselves as the Xbox. The games seem to be glitchier on the PS3 than Xbox - e.x. Mass Effect 2: I've played ME2 more times than I can recall off the top of my head on the Xbox and I decided to see if there were any differences between the Xbox version and the PS3 version. I have noticed *some* differences. For one, the PS3 version can get glitchy - almost as if you are playing online and you are starting to time out or your internet connection is dieing out. The difficulty level on the PS3 also seems to be a bit more challenging (which is not necessarily a bad thing). To be honest, I haven't even enjoyed the games I have played on my PS3 enough to be motivated to finish them.Oh - and this is a big one for me - you can't just stick a game into your PS3 and start playing it. EVERY SINGLE GAME I have put into my PS3 has taken between 10 minutes and 4 hours to install game data onto your hard drive and then install that data onto your hard drive. And then if there have been updates to the game since it was released, then there is another 5 or 10 minutes of downloading and then waiting before you can play your game. With the Xbox, there are updates to the games, but I have never had to download and install game data directly from the game disc. Unless there has been an update pushed out for that game, I've always just popped the game in and started playing...3 minutes or less every time. And, I won't really talk about the different controller too much because that is just a matter of opinion - I do prefer the Xbox controller because the PS3 controller gives me left thumb cramps. But, that is probably just because I got accustomed to the Xbox controller first. They do make Xbox-style controllers for the PS3 but the reviews I've read on those are very mixed.Bottom Line: I bought myself a glorified BluRay player that has *potential* to be awesome, but has yet to "wow" me.The only reason I don't regret the purchase is because I am simply trying to decrease my overall long-term expenses with regard to gaming and free online play was one of a few things I am doing to do that. Plus, I have a BluRay player. If it wasn't for that financial fact or the the PS3's peripheral BluRay capability, I would not recommend this over an Xbox.

Великолепно

This is my 3rd XBox 360 - all upgrade choices, no problems. I started with the original 360, then went with the Elite... and now this.System-wise, it's pretty much the same. If you already have a 360 elite or similar (even with 250GB HD), you're not getting anything really different here - it's not a NEW system. I say that to say, if you're not having any issues with your older 360 and aren't one of those ones who has to have the newest version, it may not be a must-buy for you. I, however, AM one of those ones. Some key upgrades include the overall size, which is much smaller than the original 360s. It is ridiculously quiet - worth the price alone as far as I'm concerned - and the gloss black finish is absolutely beautiful, if not a magnet for fingerprints. Fortunately, there isn't much touching necessary as the buttons themselves are touch-sensitive.Built-in Wireless N adapter, multiple USB ports, HDMI input, smaller power-brick, dedicated port for Kinect... these are the key changes that many may not even utilize or care about, yet others welcome with open arms. This version of the 360 is simply the sleekest and sexiest version, period. So that's the system itself...The Kinect sensor is... well... it's a really neat idea. It's a sensitive little thing, with decisions as seemingly insignificant as your clothing and room lighting directly affecting your gaming experience - or ability at all. Setup doesn't take long, though you may find it necessary to perform tuning multiple times a day in various lighting situations. Also - ROOM. You need ROOM! We have an 83" TV, so fortunately our living room is huge, just to be able to watch that thing. You need a good 8-10 feet of distance from the sensor if you plan on playing with more than one person - a bit less if you're playing by yourself. Taller players require more room as well, so if you're well over 6' tall you may still need to stand back in the "two or more player" zone just to be able to seen completely by the sensor. Also, make sure there's enough room in the area for anyone NOT playing to be able to sit to the side, or enter/leave the room without wandering into the playing area, as the Kinect will enter them into the game - usually messing up the game you're playing. So if you have one of those completely bare living rooms that are shown in most of the Kinect commercials (ha) you're good to go.Motion capture is hardly new or groundbreaking (I've been gaming since the early 80's), but has received a recent resurgence of sorts - much like 3D in the movie industry. The Kinect is a very fun and interesting way to play games, without a doubt, but it is hardly the major leap forward from the Wii that, say, the Wii was from the NES Power Glove. Anyone considering purchasing this with thoughts of Tony Stark-esque motion-capture accuracy will be seriously disappointed. Here's why: (It IS important to remember that this sensor is new, and will undoubtedly receive numerous updates and enhancements, as well as better implementation via newer and more intuitive games.)Along with this setup comes the Kinect Adventures game/setup disc. I also decided to get Kinect Sports because, let's face it, Wii Sports was some of the most fun you could have with a group of friends on a single console. Without reviewing these games themselves, I can tell you that with just these two discs, you can get a real since of the Kinect sensor's strengths and weaknesses. I can definitely understand why Microsoft chose to bundle KA with this setup, rather than Kinect Sports. Adventures gets you used to basic controls and movements - since this is probably the first exposure most gamers will have with playing without any sort of handheld controller, this is welcome and pretty intelligent. Simple sidestepping, arm-flapping, jumping, turning, swiping motions... that's pretty much all that's needed in this game. And the Kinnect handles this pretty seamlessly.Pop in the Kinect Sports or Game Party in Motion disc, and it becomes clear that this technology could use some tweaking. Specifically with the more precise movements that are required in the games being simulated. Take Bowling... a fan favorite on the Wii. The controls are just not refined enough - more times than not you'll end up releasing the ball when you don't intend to, since there is no way to manually decide when your character releases the ball. Basketball is the same thing, whereas you try to mimic a realistic shooting motion, only to have the ball released entirely too early - you end up shooting underhand to have any shot at getting a ball to reach the rim. Darts is another - you'll swear you used the exact same motion on two throws, yet one fell harmlessly to the floor, while the other - after two unsuccessful attempts to throw at all - sails forcefully over the entire dart board.Having said all that, you'd probably wonder why I rate it 5 stars... well, it's because I'm a realist and knew what I was g

Великолепно

EDIT 12/26/2011 -- It's amazing to sit back and watch Netflix or a DVD on your Xbox and actually control the deviced with hand movements (can't do this with all the lights off) or voice. Both methods are intuitive and highly functional, and make it a lot easier to enjoy a moving without floundering around in the dark for the remote control. Very good job, Microsoft, on this part of the Interface.EDIT 9/5/2011 -- Hats off to the Microsoft people -- the firmware updates of the late summer have drastically improved the ability of the Kinect hardware to identify hands, fingers, facial expressions, and other features which have drastically improved the playability and enjoyability of the games. While we were satisfied with some of the action games before, this makes (at least for me) it much easier to do things like apply "English" on a spike or shot. Video conferencing also seems much better, although room lighting is still very important. Too much or too little will still wipe out the ability of the Kinect to distinguish your facial expressions or fine movements.EDIT 3/18/2011 -- We have hooked the Xbox into the Gigabit Ethernet backbone in our home, and it has done nothing but improve the quality of streaming movies, etc. Everything we said before remains true. If you want to watch Netflix or listen to a lot of hi-def music files on your Xbox, then I would recommend hooking it up via Ethernet. Also, this makes downloading games into it a lot faster. If none of these functions interest you, you will be happy with performance on any good wireless setup with DSL.We've owned our Xbox 360 Kinect bundle since just before Thanksgiving (about five weeks) and both my wife and I really enjoy it.While we didn't own prior editions, this is as advertised -- sleek looking, quiet, cool, and really has some great addons. We are both "mature" and find this is a fun way to improve fitness, while at the same time acting as a great music server with a Windows 7 PC and a great streaming video server with Netflix. The interfaces are wonderful for both features. As an audio/visual playback device for a media server, this does a good job -- very fast.NOTE -- following comments apply to device connected wirelessly.POSITIVES: (1) Picture quality is excellent. Netflix movies actually look a little better than they do streamed via our top-of-the-line LG video player, and I am really surprised at both the reliability and the framerate they stream over a wireless interface. Games I'm familiar with on the PC (Mass Effect 2) also are gorgeous with frame rates that make you believe you are looking at movies. (2) DVD playback is quite good -- not as good as my audiophile DVD/CD/SACD player, but better than most DVD players in the "middle" of the market or lower. I have not had a problem playing a single game or DVD on it. (3) Quietness and Cooling -- sound is absolutely unobtrusive, and I have checked the heat with infra-red laser and 85 degrees is the warmest reading I've seen. (4) Game control via Kinect. There seems to be some "lag" in the device reading your body position and responding to changes. Ordinarily, it doesn't seem enough to detract from lower levels of gameplay, but it might be a problem at more difficult levels we haven't reached yet. (5) Absolutely a great tool for fun for a group, with some games for up to four players -- lots of opportunities to socialize live or via the XBOX LIVE network. (6) Installation and setup were painless. If you plug the right connectors into the right places, you are largely done, so for those of you who have a bit of technophobia, this should not be a problem for you. (7) In a social settings, the intermittent photos the device takes of you are funny! (8) Fun basis to improve your social life with friends . . . if you have enough room.NEGATIVES -- (1) this device ships with unacceptably cheap A/V interconnect cables. If you have a good sound system and TV to hook it into, invest in upgraded cables (Monster makes a reasonably priced set I bought through Amazon), because the cheap connectors did not make a "positive" connection in the video part into my A/V receiver. (2) The Kinect receiver works accurately but is a bit finicky about placement. On my TV, because of my TV being on top of an entertainment center, it sits a little less than 7' off the floor. It reads our overall bodies well, except sometimes our feet toward the front of the "best" player zone not in games where foot placement is essential. (3) The Xbox live menu and other menus are not intuitive, nor do they seem completely accessible via Kinect -- it seems you need a wireless controller by you to get you back to the top level menus. (4) It's unusual I spend this much money on a device delivering so many advertisements for games, etc. to me. Some I watch -- most I don't. (5) Can't understand why Microsoft did not include an HDMI connector (as one plug handles everything). (6) You will probably have to rearrange the furniture in the
