It's a real nice piece of equipment. Small, easy to set up and good overall quality. If only the volume knobs where not made of plastic, it would have been a work of art!

I have been using this product for about 3 years now in my college's theatre. The setup that we use is a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 to the M-Audio 410 Firewire. When we first got the 410, it worked fine. During the second year of use, it started to "pop" a little. What I mean by "popping" is that during random times, even when audio isn't playing through the 410, a pop would be heard through the speakers. The reason that I know it's a problem with the 410 is because the output lights on the box would light up in all channels. During the third year of use, this problem has become even worse, with "pops" occurring every 20-30 minutes or less. I've looked all over the place for solutions, but couldn't find one that would fix this problem. This is a serious problem for our use in the theatre and I can also see it causing a problem for anyone who wants to use it for recording or even just leisure use for a home system.Another problem that I've discovered with the box is that the support for it is horrible. Earlier this year I had used the 410 with my own Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.4 and, aside from the popping during the show, it worked fine after I installed the new driver. However, when I began working on another show in December, my Macbook Pro updated to 10.6.5. When I first plugged the 410 in, my Macbook Pro wouldn't recognize it. I went to M-Audio's support website which warned me not to update until a new driver has been released. (Little late for that). However, I checked back frequently and found that they approved the device with a new driver for 10.6.5. I downloaded the new driver, got rid of the old one, and installed the new one. Funny thing was, it was the same exact driver I had updated to earlier in the year. My Macbook Pro would not recognize the 410, which left me speechless since I had just purchased a program license so that I could work on shows with my Macbook Pro.When I hooked the 410 up to the Mac that we normally use, it worked just fine. Puzzled, I looked at the OS of the Mac, and it showed 10.5.8. (Luckily we don't get a good Wifi signal in our booth and the updates for 10.6.5, and the previous OS's, never downloaded.) I am still using the 410 with the OSX 10.5.8 Mac in our booth, but still get the "pops" like crazy during the show.My recommendation, do a lot more research before purchasing any of the M-Audio products. I'm sure there are a lot better things out there.

I needed a rudimentary recording setup for a class I was taking. I initially purchased a Behringer 802 mixer and UCA202 interface, thinking that I would use the extra inputs to expand my set-up in the future, but was dissatisfied with the quality of my recordings(white noise, hissing, etc.). Under the gun, I ordered the M-Audio Fast Track. Man, am I glad that I did. My DAW recognized the device right away and I was recording high quality audio in no time. I've had this little box for a little over three months and I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. While the Fast Track is a basic interface, with very few bells and whistles, it works and it was under a hundred bucks shipped. Highly recommended for beginners. For reference sake, I used this device on an Intel iMac running OSX Lion. Also, for those considering this product and the Fast Track Pro, I would recommend purchasing the basic Fast Track or saving your money and putting it towards a higher end interface. I bought the Fast Track Pro at a local music store (again, hoping for more inputs) and the levels from both the XLR input and output monitor were very low when compared to the Fast Track.

I wanted to make some simple yet professional sounding recordings for demos etc. I first tried using the built in sound card & mic in my PC because I am very cheap...no good. Poor quality, noise, low gain etc. Purchased M-Audio Fast Track USB2 interface. Also, Behringer C1 Condenser Mic. (don't forget to buy the mic cable, mic comes with none) The C1 needs power and USB2 provides it. Amazing improvement in sound quality. It all cost under $150, within budget for even a penny pincher like me.Don't plan on using the Pro-tools software that comes with Fast Track, it is only a teaser for the $300 full package which is way too much money and too complicated for a newbie.I use Audacity. It is a free download, very functional, easy to use, and with a lot of support. (check out You tube for tutorials)I had no problem with crackling or popping. Install drivers before you connect Fast Track as you are instructed, and also adjust gain as instructed for instruments and vocals and you should have no clipping or crackling problems. I did have some noise problems when I was trying to use the Pro Tools.Fast Track also has a "Monitor" setting for the mic so that there is no delay when playing back and recording another track.I am plugging in a keyboard instead of guitar and I can only record mono. So I copy the track so that I have two and pan one left and one right for a bigger sound. Have fun and be patient.Behringer C-1 Studio Condenser Microphone

I'm unable to use this as I planned for voice over work because there is too much noise in the mic preamp. I'm using an ADK studio condenser microphone on phantom power and the output signal, even when gain is only 50% up, has too much background hiss to be acceptable. Sure, I could process out the noise in the software but that's also unacceptable. It may work fine with a dynamic microphone or with a condenser mic on a louder instrument, but for my requirement it is too noisy. I haven't tried it with anything else.I purchased this to replace a non-USB Behringer mixer that ran out to a Sound Blaster external USB audio interface to my Dell Laptop - a solution that works great, no noise whatsoever! But this uses several cables, extra power supply, and is lots of trouble to set-up compared to the M-Audio.The advantage of the M-Audio is it's simplicity: one cable out to the computer; mic in with phantom power provided; unbalanced instrument input; good headphone output; Stereo line out (RCA), and no power supply required. If only it were quieter.

Though M-Audio is a pretty well known name for computer-oriented music, I had tons of issues with their firewire device that I owned previously to this little number. As I upgraded my system, I decided to go USB and thought that the Fast Track would be a nice, cheap solution to my simple needs of recording guitar and vocals (and I had hoped my troubles with the firewire interface was an anomaly). I experienced many of the same problems as the other reviewers with crackling noises and system issues. I'm running Windows 7 with Cubase 6, and I had nonstop issues with this rinky little device including periods of time when the Asio drivers were not even detected. Sometimes you get what you pay for and yes, M-Audio offers little to no-help, not to mention they update their drivers like once a year. I bit the bullet and bought a Komplete Audio 6 from Native Instruments and it solved all the issues I had with the Fast Track. Avoid this sucker, it isn't worth it.

This is pretty much all you need to start recording with a microphone, electric guitar, or a pickup. You can also record microphone and pickup simultaneously. You can monitor your input directly with the toggle button on the front, and adjust the gain with the knobs on the top.Latency is not a problem with this guy. I've used it with Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper, and Presonus Studio One, and it works great.Comes with a very, very light version of Pro Tools 8. But this version of Pro Tools is quite powerful for the home user. This unit is small enough that I can throw it in my backpack and take it with me (with my laptop) to record elsewhere.Overall, I'm pretty happy with this product.

This device works fine 75% of the time. The other 25% it will either:A. Randomly produce extreme amounts of distortion on its audio outputs, requiring that you to exit the applications producing the audio to correct it the problem, orB. Won't put out any sound at all.The 80/20 rule above means it distorts about 15 minutes out of every hour of use, usually right in the middle of a critical part of an editing session.Save your money and buy something reliable. Most disappointing. This problem is well documented on the web, but M-Audio seems uninterested in correcting it with a driver that is actually reliable.I am a Windows 7, 64 bit user and use Propellerhead Reason for most of my music production.

I bought this m-audio fast track over a year ago for is compact size and simplicity. It has turned out to be a great interface for basic home recording. I use it with a condenser microphone that requires phantom power as well as with electric bass/guitar. The company serviced my devise under warranty when I noticed some signal distortion, but I'm still not clear if it was the m-audio device that was at fault. Either way, good product - good customer service - affordable price.

I was able to use it right out of the box after installing the drivers. I hooked up my mic and guitar and after making 1 small change in the preferences Garageband recognized the guitar and mic as separate tracks. I am able to record while playing and singing simultaneously or separate tracks. It is a great product that is easy to use and great for the price. You do have to change Garageband's preferences each time you use it and if you plug it in you have to reopen Garageband for it to be recognizedI added a Shure SM58 mic and the sound was really good. Lots of fun and not just a toy. I also use it for my professional podcasts and audio recording. A BIG plus is that I am also able to use it to run my Shure Presenter lapel mic into my Mac for great hands free sound on webcasts and virtually any program that has audio recording. Can't say more..LOVE IT

i've had this device on me now for about a couple of years or so, and after various jerry-rigging formats, i put a couple of BX8a's on this, and I have to tell you, I do not understand why this device has bad reviews. the drivers are not much a hassle to work with, the pre-amps themselves are one of the greatest i've ever worked with (previously using USB ones and the FireWire solo)... my vocals, guitars, bass, synthesizers, and drum machines all sound so pristine through this set up. the fact that the MIDI I/O capability existed on this one was a shocker to me and I was definitely sold on it.if you ever get ahold of one of these, this is perfect for most things. dual inputs for TRS and XLR basd instruments, and works well for a two person podcast, i've never had MIDI meltdowns transmitting and receiving data on any of my controllers or other synthesizer interfaces, and i've treated this thing like it's a toddler. it's well taken care of and gets used to it's fullest potential. this thing could survive operating for another 10 years at the least right now.if you read all the other reviews giving a really low rating, here's something you need to keep in mind. patience while installing the drivers and the hardware itself. just because many people adopted the "out-of-the-box" technique over the last 10 years, does not mean that it still applies to something like this. read your stuff before you install, and observe the instructions on your machine. these are some of the big reasons why anyone who owned this device wrote a poor review on it and gave it a low rating. true audiophiles know their gear and how things work!

so after buying this product and using it for a couple of months, my computer starts blue screening whenever the fast track is plugged in. Thinking it was my computer, i went and purchased a new laptop, only to have the same problem. After researching it more and checking on M-audio's website to see if anyone else is having the same problem, i learned that almost EVERYONE was experiencing this problem, for the M-Audio Fast Track, Fast Track Pro, and Fast Track Ultra, and that M-audio has not written a code that fixes the problem. I find it disgusting that they would sell these products, knowing that they are faulty. Terrible.

I bought this as an inexpensive way to interface my guitar with my computer to record some tracks. It works perfectly for that. I hope to use it with a microphone to lay down some tracks with my trumpet in the near future. However I cannot comment on the microphone input since I do not own a mic yet. The only problem i've had is trying to get it to work with Cubase. I got it working pretty much right away with Guitar Rig (you just have to select the m-audio asio driver to get it to work), but that's really all I need to lay down simple guitar tracks. I think the problem I'm having with cubase is purely related to my inexperience with the software. I highly recommend this product to musicians on a budget!

This was the solution I chose for outputting my Roland GR55 guitar synthesizer to my computer since the USB connection out of the GR55 is so glitchy.Only wish there was stereo output from the GR55 since I only get one channel out, with this unit. You might look for something to input both mono channels out of the GR55 if you are using it.

Exactly what I needed! I read the reviews and decided to buy this product (M-Audio Fast Track) but with some concern that it might not work with my Windows Vista 32 bit Dell computer and that it might not work with my MKL 990 condensor mic. I downloaded the latest drivers from M-Audio (no problem). I connected the Fast Track to the USB port and my microphone to the Fast Track. I turned on phantom power on the back of the Fast Track. I adjusted the gain knob (3/4 turn) on the top of the Fast Track as I sang into the mic. I plugged in my headphones. I adjusted the output by turning the knob (1/2 turn) on the top of the Fast Track. It works great! I have not tried the instrument input yet. I have a seperate MIDI interface, but the M-Audio with both would have been nice to have except I bought the MIDI interface first.

The M-Audio Fast Track audio interface is a nice product that gets the job done. My primary purpose for the interface is for plugging in my guitar so I don't have the plug in straight to the laptop (13" MacBook Pro mid-2010) via a cheap connector. The sound quality has significantly improved, as well as the realness of the sound (ex. sustaining a played note until it naturally stops vs sustaining a played note for an unnaturally short amount of time). This is definitely worth the money for someone who is relatively new to recording and it works well with GarageBand, which is currently my primary DAW. The product comes with a limited version of Pro Tools, which I find to be okay for what it can do. There are no cons, in my opinion. It does what it says it can do with little to no trouble and is worth the money!

No, this is the M-Audio Fast Track MkII!Prior to getting the Fast Track MkII, I used the Blue Icicle USB mic preamp. It was cheap and it did the job well for the price I bought it for ($40~): recording my vocals for singing and voice overs & acting. However, since it's so cheap it's pretty much a no-frills device; all you get is a gain knob. It didn't have direct monitoring and because my on-board sound card is lousy, I was looking for an alternative sound card. After a couple weeks of research, I finally decided on buying the M-Audio Fast Track MkII.I've seen the reviews here on Amazon, and originally I was considering passing over this item since many had problems getting it to work. But I decided to take my chances after seeing other positive reviews from sites like Guitar Center. I'm glad I did, because my experience using the Fast Track MkII has been nothing but pleasurable. I downloaded the latest drivers straight from M-Audio's website and installed it on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop. After that, I just plugged in the Fast Track MkII and in less than 20 seconds I was all connected and ready to use it. I plugged in my condenser mic and I was able to record some audio tests using Audacity. Direct monitoring worked like a charm! However, I won't be recording any guitars so I can't say how well it'd do that. But so far, so good! This has been the best $99 I've ever spent. The functionality is unrivaled at this price range.
