The latency on this guy reads in my CPU as 12ms. This is EXACTLY what I already had! Luckily I still need something to plug my mic and keyboard into and it fits the bill. Had problems with firewire M-Audio products and went the USB route. It does what it needs to, but don't expect to do multiple functions at once given the latency.

I bought this primarily to use it as an audio interface for DJ?ng, never used it for production. Worked well on my MAC but had constant audio dropouts on my Win7 machine due to driver issues. After 6 months channels 1&2 stopped working, sold it after that.Guess there is a reason why this is cheap as compared to RME & Apogee products.

I purchased this product last year at a major retail chain. It was horrible!!! White noise, cracking and popping sounds about every 10 seconds. The Protools LE version that was bundled with it limits you to 16 tracks. Not gonna work! I returned it and got a Presonus USB Audiobox and it has been smooth sailing ever since!

This is a really good audio interface. But I have Snow Leopard 10.5.6 and it was not compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.0.3 or the interface. I tried everything to make it work, but to no avail. And as well all know, M-Audio has THE worst customer service out of any other company in America. So I will be returning the interface, then figuring out what i'm going to do with the software that is now unusable.

I was looking for an easy-to-use audio recording interface and thought I had found the right combination of features and price in this product. Unfortunately, I've had nothing by problems since installing the drivers for this item. While listening and/or recording through this device, I suffer intermittent cracks, pops, and extremely loud bursts of white noise rendering it completely useless. My original onboard sound card works just fine and I've been forced to reset it as the default audio source while looking for a solution to this problem.I searched the product's support forum to discover A.) Many users with similar problems using this product specifically and other M-Audio Fast Track products generally; and B.) A rabbit's trail of tech-laden "solutions" requiring an unreasonable amount of trial and error diagnosing OS settings, optimizing PC performance, disabling other devices, etc., all of which in my case have unfortunately yielded no solution.I'm no newbie to computers and this experience has left me befuddled. I will be returning this product as soon as I can find my receipt and the box it shipped in.Short version: It's fair to expect USB products to simply "plug and play" (assuming updated drivers are available) without having to spend hours researching a solution to a problem. Apparently, this one does not simply plug and play for me. Too bad. I was really hoping this product was going to work.

The sound is very stuffy. I have problems with snaps and crackles constantly. I have to reinstall the drivers every month or two. Tech support claimed that "They degrade over time" as if it was a persishable item. When the hardware was damaged, tech support was talking me through the reinstallation of drivers as if I were an 80 year old grandma(yeah, the guys who find a way to write code that "degrades over time") even though I told them that I reinstalled the drivers about 100 times. After an hour or so they finally conceded the hardware was damaged, like I told them in the first place.I would never buy this product or any other product from m-audio again. I just can't figure out how they got a deal with Digidesign.

I picked up this interface about a year and a half ago to use for DJing and production. There's only one word that can describe it: amazing. I run Live on a Mac and I've never had a single problem with this interface. 4 channels out and 1 in will fill up any DJ mixer and let you record at the same time. Having to buy 1/4" to RCA cables was a pain, but after using them I wish my mixer had 1/4" inputs instead of RCA. Power over Firewire is great too, one cable to the computer and you're ready to go.If you're in need of a serious audio interface for whatever you do, don't look any further than this one.

First, let me start off by saying that this interface is absolutely worth the money. For the Sub $150 market, I don't think you'll do much better. The interface is clean and works well with GarageBand 09 on Mac OSX. I have only used the instrument in (as I am not a vocalist, and I'm just using this for songwriting and laying scratch tracks right now)The only problem I encountered was with the included Pro-Tools software. I had difficulty installing on MacOS 10.6.5 (I think). Basically, there is an issue between versions that is corrected by visiting the Digidesign site and downloading an updated installer (8.3).

Well priced, good updates from the 410 and greater I/O capacity. Only complaint is the volume control on the front. I design sound for theaters, and everything needs to be exactly the same every show. The ability to control the line level output manually on the front of the unit is a feature for other users, but a potential problem for me. if you disable it, the gain defaults to the max.

This device is awesome, you can connect a lot of different equipment and use it as a mixer or recording device by looping the sound channels.A disadvantage is that while you have 4 input channels, you can only use 2 of them simultanously. That said, it shouldn't be promoted as a 4 channel input device!!In contrast to what some other reviews say: this device IS hot-swappable!! You only need a firewire port on your computer that supports it. So if you want to HS, please check if your FW chip supports it.Also, opposed to what the manual prescribes, in the control panel there's no way of setting your SPDIF to digital or optical. This is really weird as now these ports are practically useless...

One of my Mics use phantom power and there's a switch for that. Works great. Guitar input works great and the other works as expected great. I bought a $10 analog microphone from Radio Shack which input a much stronger signal.I sent this unit to M-Audio to evaluate in hopes that it is defective rather than simply an inadequate product.Robert Springer, PhD

This is an awesome DAC and interface for the price. It sounds wonderful with a good pair of studio monitors or cans with an added amplifier. The inputs pick up well too.As for the ISSUES and PROBLEMS people have had in the past, as other positive reviewers have pointed out, they were most likely buffering or computer issues. There is a method to setting these things up because firewire is a different beast than USB.Here is the method for installing:1. Install drivers.2. Turn off computer.3. Connect. Then turn on device.4. Turn on computer and it should spring up the software mixer. Then here is how I turn on and turn off my computer:1. Connect device. Turn it on. (When I turn my computer off I leave my FW410 connected and on.)2. Turn on computer.3. Turn on speakers and MAKE SURE SLEEP IS TURNED OFF FOR YOUR COMPUTER. ALSO DON"T CLOSE YOUR LAPTOP.To turn off computer:1. Turn off speakers.2. Power down.Hopefully this helps. This interface should not have all these bad reviews. I have purchased this unit in 2006. It has not gotten a lot of use over this time period, but when it does get used it does a great job. I have been using it more often within the last 4-5 months since I purchased a new mac book, and pro-tools m-powered 8. I must say that connected to pro-tools, and with the latest drivers installed, this unit runs very smooth. You don't even need to refer to the 410s digital mixer. It is as simple as plug and play. I recognize there is a lot of negative reviews; however, some of this may be due to other recording software and incompatibility issues. I'm not really sure. I do know that with pro-tools 8, The sound quality is very good, and I am extremely happy with the results.Only 1 quirk...On few occasions; after booting up pro-tools, the unit does not output sound. To remedy this, I would soft boot the computer, re-start pro-tools and be on my way.

I have both a Firewire 410 and a USB Line 6 UX2. The 410 is far superior. I am using with an old 1st generation Intel Mac Mini, and the 410 is connected via NewerTech MiniStack -- not directly into the Mac. I read the instructions before installing the 410 and it has worked flawlessly ever since. I regularly hot-swap and daisy-chain WD external hard drives into the 410 firewire port and have had no trouble. I output from Mac via my Benchmark DAC1 rather than the 410 because of its superior DAC. However, I do connect the 410's analog outputs to the multi-channel inputs of my Rotel processor when mixing 5.1 surround. I only recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and had no troubles with either the 410 or UX2.My only concern now is that I plan to upgrade to the new Mini which only has Firewire 800. I'm hoping that a 400-800 adapter will work with the 410.

First, the good things about this interface:When it's working, it is a great unit. Sound is clean, and I love all the inputs and outputs. The software is pretty good, and gives you a lot of options for routing and tweaking. Notice I said the software is good, not the drivers. The Bad:As I said, "when it's working", which is actually not very often. If you plan to dual-boot between Mac and Windows, forget this unit. Every time you boot into OSX, it will pause to upgrade the firmware, then you have about a 50/50 chance of it working, and if it doesn't, you'll have to reboot. Then, you have about an 80/20 chance of it working. When you boot into Windows again later, it probably won't get recognized. You'll be greeted with a flashing blue light that says the unit won't connect. Then you have to reboot. If you're lucky, it will actually work on the second or third reboot into Windows. Are you starting to get the picture? Now, with most units, this wouldn't be a big problem. You could just unplug it and replug it, and the computer would recognize it. Except that if you "hot-plug" the 410, meaning plug it in while the computer is running, you will most likely fry your firewire port, making it inoperable for ANY firewire device. Check the support documents on M-Audio's site and you'll see that they know about this issue, and they warn you against it.So now we have a unit that not only won't connect about 50-70% of the time, but you can't unplug and replug it, which is the most common fix for this problem. Sounds like a winning combination, doesn't it?As if this wasn't enough fun, I just started having an issue where Logic seems to disconnect this unit altogether. Whenever I try to play anything in Logic, the unit disconnects, and no audio will play in ANY program from that point on. This COULD be a problem with Logic, and it could be something I did, but given this unit's reputation for problems, I'm inclined to place the blame there.M-Audio's quality used to be pretty good, but in the last few years, they just can't get their act together at all. Drivers are terrible, they STILL don't have Vista drivers for most of the products over a year later, and their products seem to just get cheaper and cheaper all the time.Stay far away from this unit. Don't be lured in by the extra outputs. You can get much better quality for the same price, and if you need all the outputs, just spend a little more for a better brand.

I have had two different units (and access to a third for a short time), I used them with three different computers (all macs: a PowerMac G4, PowerMac G5, and a PowerBook G4), and I had loads of problems with every configuration. The units were a bit temperamental and I sometimes had to restart the computer to get them to work properly. As mentioned in other posts, these units are not hot-pluggable and doing so could render the computer, the FW410, or possibly other connected firewire devices permanently disabled. This is particularly a problem since firewire cables have no mechanism to be locked in place--like thumb screws--and they can easily become accidentally unplugged. I called M-Audio and they really tried to shrug this off as if it was no big deal although the FW410 comes with an urgent warning sticker covering the firewire ports that tells you not to hot plug. In fact, I personally know of one computer where the logic board was fried due to the FW410 being unplugged and plugged back in while the computer was on.Also mentioned in other posts is the FW410's propensity not to play well with other firewire devices, particularly firewire 800 devices. I can attest to this. On my PowerMac G5, I had the FW410 as the only device on the firewire 400 bus and I had an Iomega FW drive plugged into the FW800 bus. Everytime I would restart my computer I would have to make sure that I turned my speakers off because of the loud popping and clicking noises that would happen when the Iomega drive was plugged in. I'm not really good at remembering things like that and I believe that this is what blew one of my M-Audio BX5a powered monitors (which, by the way, I like). To back up my computer to the Iomega drive, I would have to shut my computer off, unplug the FW410, then restart my computer and back up. Otherwise, I would get those horrendous (and loud) popping and clicking noises, or the FW410 would become disabled and I would have to restart anyway to get it back. You're probably wondering why I had two of these units. Well, the first one became stopped working and, fortunately, it was under warranty and M-Audio sent me a new one (though I was without music for over a month). I thought my problems might have been due to a faulty unit but the second one was no better. I had all the problems described above (and others...yes, there was more) with different versions of the drivers (up to 1.8.1) even after reinstalling the drivers many times. I always thought the problems were just my setup until I did more research. I should point out that I am using Macs and everything may work perfectly with PCs, YMMV.I own other M-Audio products (the aforementioned BX5a powered monitors and an M-Audio keyboard) and I have had no problem with either of those. One thing that I didn't like about M-Audio is that their tech support made it seem like I was the ONLY user that is having problems with this product. As for my FW410, you can look for it on eBay (it's only a couple of months old).At this point, I have just unplugged the FW410 because I am in fear for my system. After further research, I'm probably going to buy a PreSonus Firebox. This unit seems to work well with Macs, is hot pluggable, and six simultaneous inputs are possible unlike the FW410 in which only two simultaneous inputs are possible (despite the name).

I've owned one of these for several years. When it works, and for what it works for, it works well. However there are many problems:1. M-Audio says the device must be first on the Firewire chain (a ridiculous requirement) and that you shouldn't hot-plug it (an absurd restriction).2. If you do try hot-plugging it and you manage to not burn out your FW interface, as some here have reported has happened, you'll find you need to reboot your machine anyway. Windows will not recognize this device upon hot plugging, only when it reboots. I've had many other Firewire devices and this is the only one that behaves this way.Any Firewire device that can't be hot plugged, to say nothing of one that shouldn't be hot plugged, is "broken as designed." M-Audio has no business selling any such gadget, and the FireWire consortium or whatever it is that controls that trademark should have forbidden M-Audio to use the "FireWire" name and logo on this product.3. S/PDIF coax input basically doesn't work. Sometimes it locks to the incoming signal, sometimes not. If it does lock it usually doesn't stay locked for long. Yes, I've tried different settings of the sync source and rate. It doesn't help.4. S/PDIF optical input isn't much better. Even through a mere six foot Toslink cable. This is, btw, with other S/PDIF devices that work fine with everything else.5. As someone else noted, that assignable knob on the front panel sometimes -- often -- loses its assignment, and you have to go into the control panel software and re-assign it. Needless to say this is a PITA.M-Audio should have recalled these devices and given (yes, GIVEN) all owners an updated version that fixes these problems.

I've had mine for several years. It worked for maybe 3-4 months and then it blue-screened my laptop and it hasn't worked since. I thought it was my laptop, so tried it on a new Sony laptop. Dead. Contacted customer support, who had me try several things and then concluded that it was an "interrupt problem" with my firewire port, suggesting I change the interrupt. Not gonna risk messing up my primary work laptop so I didn't go there. Then got a brand new MacBook Pro, figuring it has to work on a Mac. Dead as a doornail, even the Mac OS wouldn't recognize it. All it does is blink, showing that it is getting power. It's easy to blame problems on the software, on configuration, on the laptop for months and months until the thing is out of warranty and then find out it was the interface all along. Now it's just a very expensive ($500 back when I bought it) doorstop.

I'm changing my review from 1 star to 3 stars. Now that my 410 is working, it's great, but it doesn't get better than 3 stars because of all the problems I had in getting it there. This is what I said before it was fixed:"I've tried getting this blasted thing to work for the past 9 months, hoping a new driver would magically fix the problem. All I get is a blue blinking light. I've read all the online advice. Nothing works, including my 410. Stay away from this product."I went back and forth with the M-Audio tech support in order to get this thing to go. The bottom line is this: The 410 is a good product when it's set up correctly, but it is really particular about how it's set up.Here's the trick ... The 410 MUST be the first FireWire device that your computer sees. I don't understand why, but it's true. Also, you cannot connect and/or disconnect it while the computer is powered up. This all brings back the most annoying aspects of the old SCSI daisy chain issues. A real step backwards.Once you understand all that, the thing works great.

I bought this thing about a month ago since it seemed perfect for my needs (portable, multiple outs, mic pre-amps and compatibility with ProTools). Unfortunately I regret it every time I use it. I've heard the stories from Mac users having problems but I'm a PC user and am experiencing them as well. As I speak the little signal light is on for no good reason and seems to be stuck.First off, the device has no OS pre-loaded. It's loaded when you start up Windows/OSX and this in itself causes problems. I spend a good deal of time unplugging, turning on/off the unit trying to get it to unload it's OS so you can reload it and your computer can see it (this is also why it's not compatible with Linux and never will be).One big annoyance with this unit is it's constant blinking (super bright) blue LED when the unit is off. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. When it's off it shouldn't be screaming at you I think. I use it in my bedroom so I always have to unplug it in addition to powering off. Which seems to be better anyway as every time I leave it powered on and shut down my computer I have to go through a unplug-turn-on/off ritual to get it recognized again. The drivers are also pretty horrible. I upgraded my drivers to the latest version after it was recommended and now every time I try to turn the volume up or down the M-Audio control panel freezes. Anyway the whole things saddens me.I think I should have tried the Presonus FBOX 6X10 Firewire Recording Interface instead. On the other hand, when it does work, I'm using Windows, and I don't have to change the volume the sound quality is good, the portability is nice and I'm enjoying the ten outs.

The product worked decently for about 3 months. The mic inputs never sounded great. Suddenly, for no reason, it stopped initializing on startup. Now the extremely bright LED light just blinks. While this is good for party time in the computer room it is not good for recording songs. Buy something more reliable.

I have worked on ProTools HD for 6 years at a studio. I needed something at home that was small yet flexible. So, I bought ProTools M-Powered with a M-Audio Firewire 410. It is small yet still really flexible. There is a little latency with my setup, I think it is more computer related, but if you know what you are doing it is not a problem.

I bought this device because of its price and feature-set. Having the option of running Pro Tools LE (M-Powered) was part of the appeal. I haven't tested all the line outs or the S/PDIF ports, but over the last couple months everything else so far has worked fine. I haven't tried using the power adapter either, since mine is powered via Firewire. The front and rear inputs can't be used simultaneously (I knew this when bought it), but it would be a great improvement.M-Audio warns not to engage in Firewire hot-plugging with this unit. I've heard about this with other Firewire devices (without manufacturer's warnings) from other musicians, so I have no problem with this advice. The only thing needing improvement is the driver software. It *never* loads after a cold boot, only after a warm boot (restart). Also, it seems to unset a couple of my preferred settings (although they still *look* like they are set) after certain applications have used it, which I didn't see documented, so I assume this is a bug. This might be because I have it connected to the computer through a Firewire hub.Unlike Digidesign interfaces, it allows several applications to simultaneously use its features, which Digidesign interfaces only allow when Pro Tools is not running, and even then in a somewhat simplistic manner. However, I've found Digidesign's drivers for their interfaces are quite stable. I'm OK with the trade-off.Rock-solid drivers and simultaneous use of the front and rear inputs would earn it five stars.

I got this card about 2 weeks ago, to use with music software. I use mostly Protools M-powered and Finale. The card is excellent when it works, but it is the buggiest hardware I have ever used. Sometimes it does not turn on when I start the computer. This requires shutting down, unplugging everything from the card, and restarting the computer. There are alot of excellent cards out there, I would recomend getting a different one than this.

This sound card, its the best you can find at this price. The driver can be better, but its ok. With pro tools M-powered it work just like any Mbox, 002 or 003 rack but with 2 input only. I really think its a great interface.

I've used my 410 on two different Macbooks (with different processor speeds) and a Macbook Pro and haven't had any problems at all. Just make sure to install the drivers from the M-Audio website and not the ones that come with the installation cd. I can't speak for older Macs though.

I had continuous popping as well, but it's not the Firewire 410's fault and it can be easily avoided. I had my Firewire 410 sitting right next to my Linksys router and was getting non stop popping coming through the speakers and my recordings. The popping stopped when I moved them about 2-3 ft. apart from each other.Maybe it has something to do with the WiFi signal. I'm using a desktop PC. If you are using a laptop with an internal modem/WiFi, make sure you don't have your Firewire 410 sitting right next to your laptop or you'll probably have the same problem. As for desktop users... I purchased some longer ethernet cables and moved my router about 15ft away from my system just to make sure I don't have any more problems. If you are still having popping or stuttering problems, check your latency setting in the driver. Set the latency to the default (256) or larger until you have a more powerful computer that can handle lower latencies.I've also heard horror stories about the driver. It seems that most of these horror stories were from Mac users. I use PC and everything seems to be rock solid. Either way, just make sure you have the latest drivers from M-Audio(dot)com. I think the current drivers may have solved Mac issues.Overall, it's a very nice interface for the price. Clean sound going in and out. I'm using this mostly for narrating video. I was torn between this interface and the Presonus Firebox. I was also looking at Tascam products. I finally decided on this the Firewire 410. I won't say anything bad about the others because I don't have any personal experience with them. I will say, however, that I very satisfied with my decision. On a final note, I called tech support to ask a few questions. I had to wait on hold for about 15-20 minute to speak with someone, but, they were polite and knowledgeable.
