In the age of WFH (Work from home) or WFA (Work from anywhere), we all need a great headset for our life in the virtual conference room.
This is my life, roll out of bed at 7am, get on a call and don’t get off until late in the afternoon. Including marathon 4 hour architecture workshops.
My biggest beef with earphones or Air Pods is quite simply battery life. Anything inserted into the ears also causes fatigue after some amount of time. Granted I’ve built up my tolerance but still.
So do over the ear headphones make more sense? Sadly, yes for a number of reasons.
That inner ear fatigue reduction, but add weight to your head/neck that they don’t.
Control and volume, with earbuds, you’re options to mute are somewhat limited. You can push the button on the side, or tap them, or whatnot. Often risking dropping the call by hanging up by accident. Or relegated to using your phone’s mute or finding the zoom/Teams windows buried on your desktop under your presentation just to mute/unmute. Not the case with these.
Battery Life, I can get 3.5 hours out of a set of AirPods Pros on a good day. Then you have to start juggling them. Going single ear while you try to get another one charged.
Pros:
Battery life, all day… Actually multi-day. If you forget to charge them you’re still good to go.
Fairly lightweight, vs Bose
Great microphone boom, flip up to mute, pull down to talk. Take back control.
Easy to use tactile buttons on the right ear.
Great integration with the right platforms. Teams, in this case, you have a dedicated Teams button you can customize.
Great sound quality, both audio and microphone.
A better than average app experience.
Self pairing USB Dongle. Nothing to install, just plugin and use. Worked great with my Mac and paired simultaneously to my iPhone. For what it’s worth, my preferred mode is to use my phone for the audio portion of the calls so that I can be mobile. These are Bluetooth so I’m not ‘tied’ to my computer with a cable but it doesn’t make it from my office to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee. Hence the phone option.
The ON AIR / Busy light is critical for work from home use so family knows you’re on a call. Both auto and manual modes are available.
So what’s not to love?
Lack of ANC, for $250 you should get that. Yes, Evolve2 85’s have it. These should too.
Honestly, they don’t grip my head great, they sit on the ear, not over.
The packaging was SPARSE. In fact I thought I got an open box item. But the lightweight frustration-free packaging is what you get (or what I got), just a box, nothing fancy. Not really a con but not what I was expecting, usually Jabra does better at this.
I mean, no getting started guide, just a little pamphlet to charge them and get the app.
The Bluetooth dongle is hidden in a little pouch in the case. This isn’t the norm, usually, they are separate.
So back to the question at hand. Are these a $250 headset? If your company is paying, yes, of course. If you’re footing the bill out of pocket? Find a coupon or deal. Without ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) then no, there are better options). But they are a solid value in the $200 or sub $200 range.
At the end of the day. I love everything about these but the price point. Yes these are 5 Star headphones.
BUILD QUALITY:
These are meant to be lightweight and comfortable for hours of continous wear, and I get that. However, lightweight doesn't mean cheap and flimsy, and that's precisely how these feel in my hand and on my head - as if handling them with just barely too much force would cause them to crumble. Furthermore, they weren't comfortable to wear at all. I wasn't able to find any position where these just 'fit',
SOUND:
Flat, lifeless, unworthy of anything close to the price tag being commanded. Call quality was good, but it wasn't great. I don't use Microsoft Teams so I can't say whether or not thats where this headset's performance really shines or not. But my experience using these for either music listening or conducting business calls was very lackluster and unremarkable, easily outperformed by headsets that cost a mere fraction of what these command.
COMFORT:
Just wasn't there for me. Too light and far too flimsy to find a comfortable position on my head. The yokes are too flexible, the clamp force too minimal, and their overall design simply wasn't conducive to a good fit for me.
BOTTOM LINE:
Can't recommend these unfortunately. Look elsewhere in the Jabra product lineup for a truly stellar headset because I couldn't find it here.
PROS:
~ Connectivity - setup and connection to my phone and laptop were a breeze, and I love that they can handle incoming calls from both systems simultaneously. I've been on multiple Teams calls and putting one on hold to answer another is a really great feature. The MS Teams integration is really tight and very helpful.
~ Usability - the controls are intuitive and work really well. The boom mic mute function is great and really helpful on group calls where you don't want your team to know you're eating lunch while on the call.
~ Incoming Sound Quality - The sound on these is as good as most of the other headsets I've tried. Music is pretty rich with good bass and incoming sound/call quality is very good.
CONS:
~ Comfort - my main problem with these is long term comfort. I have to wear them for hours each day and I find that my ears start to hurt by early afternoon. They are an on-ear cup design. The material is soft and well-cushioned, so this may be my sensitivity vs. a product issue, but I can't wear them non-stop for the whole day like I need.
~ Outgoing Sound Quality - The main reason I wanted to try these was for the boom mic. I have an over-ear ANC headset, but the sound quality for the people I'm on a call with was horrible. I assumed the boom mic would solve that issue but am disappointed with the response I've gotten from my team about this. The sound quality is definitely better, but I still get feedback that my voice on calls is distant/echoing/tinny.
~ Battery life - On a full charge, the battery is usually low by the end of the day. The claim was 37 hours of active use on a single charge, and I haven't gotten close to that yet. It's not a huge issue from home as I can charge them each night, but could be an issue on the road (if I ever get to travel again).
~ Lack of ANC - These are not active noise cancelling headphones, though they do not claim to be either, just be aware of that when considering a purchase. My home office is relatively quiet, but I would like to have ANC for a coffee shop or noisy office setting.
Overall, these headphones are OK for my current work-from-home situation, but I will continue to look for the best solution - maybe Airpod Pros next...
The ear cups are so dreamily soft and comfortable. Whatever they did, they did it right. The headband is adjustable on both sides. The whole product feels very premium and luxurious. The microphone boom is light and unobtrusive. When I lift up the microphone boom, it mutes me. Lowering it will unmute. It also has built in busy light that tells my family that I am in a call. Very slick! It has some type of smart noise cancellation for the mic where there are 3 microphones. Even when there are background noise around me, the caller on the other end cannot hear them.
The buttons are unobtrusive and I find them by touch. At first, it was hard to know which buttons did what, but I eventually learned them. There are labels next to the buttons, but they are not easy to see.
The headphone comes with a very nice premium case. Inside is also the USB adapter for connection to the computer for computer video conferencing or calls. Bluetooth will work too if the computer has it. I can also connect to my smartphone for regular phone calls.
There is NO charging stand in this setup. I think it can be purchased separately if needed.
The battery lasts for days of constant use because I work at home now. Unlike many other headphones, this one provides feedback by means of voice feedback. If I am pairing Bluetooth, it tells me that. I think it's very helpful to hear instructions instead of guessing what is happening.
This is truly a high tech headphone crammed with features. The only thing it lacks is active noise cancellation but I think I don't really need it for calls.
So naturally, I was hesitant to give these a shot. I'm glad I did.
Jabra makes a quality product. That doesn't go unnoticed, especially in our new world of working from home. These measure up to any other speaker or headphone I have used for conferencing (whether work or school). They are supremely comforable and don't leave me wanting to lop my own head off after an hour on Zoom. The battery life is great. I can use these A LOT and only have to charge them once a week. I'm never worried about dropping a connection because the battery is drained.
The most important aspect of these for me is to be heard clearly by others. It's been mentioned to me that the device transmits crystal clear. No breaking. No choppiness. No fading. It's all there.
I had serious doubts, but these are a great solution for isolated audio in and out.
The sound is fine. It's better than the headphones that come with your phone but they aren't great.
They work.
They don't sound amazing but they aren't BAD.
If you are looking for an even sounding middle of the road set of headphones these would be for you!
Ease of use: Immediately paired to a windows laptopand worked flawlessly. Microsoft teams recognized it very fast and have had zero issues.
Build quality: Looks well built, foam around ears is pretty thin but still comfortable for now.
Comfort: Very comfortable on my head, but my ears do get a bit hot using this headset. So far it's not too noticable.
Functionality: The fact you can put up the microphone to mute is a great convenience. In Microsoft teams if you have the microphone in the up position it mutes you in the meeting as well, if you try to unmute in teams it tells you to put the microphone down. Calls sound great, and this paired to my phone and switches between the dongle and my phone seamlessly. Having the busy light is also helpful to let people know you are on a call.
Overall: Love this thing, was super easy to setup and sounds great.
UPDATE: I was able to get in touch with Jabra customer support. The rep was very helpful and informative, but ultimately we still could not do any firmware update via the mac version of Jabra Direct. I ended up finding a Windows computer to borrow and was able to update it that way.
UPDATE: After using this for a few days I noticed the Jabra Direct software on my iMac tell me that the firmware for the Link 380 and the headset need to be updated. But the Jabra Firmware updater just keeps saying invalid firmware each time a step through the process to update. Can't find any articles about this issue.
Day one I am happy so far. I was a little bit worried based on some of the reviews. The sound quality is plenty good. I guess it might be good enough for some audiophiles, but I’ve don’t a couple WebEx calls, phone calls, and Spotify over my Mac and each were really clear and well balanced. And the connectivity is impressive. I was skeptical about having them connected to my Mac and my phone at the same time but it seems to transition really quickly. I didn’t experience any lag when I tried testing it a bit.
My only complaint so far is size. I do have a bigger melon, but I usually don’t have to extend a headset to its max size/length but these ones I do to fit comfortably. The head band is also a bit narrow in my opinion and the padding feels more like a single spot on the top of my which gives an odd feel. The ear muffs I think could stand to be a tad bigger as well.
But sidetone was a major consideration for me, and it’s great with the default settings.
The USB bluetooth adapter is great to give them much more range than laptop bluetooth receiver, allowing me to roam around a bit in the house and stay consistently connected. Admittedly the sound quality is not as good as my Bose QC2 which I still use if I am listening to music during the day, but sound quality of these is really good. I think the on ear is more than sufficient for mostly conference calls, and music is pretty good too. The microphone going to mute when you swing the boom is a great convenience feature. Microphone quality is great, which was my biggest issue with older headphones.
Covid sucks and we are all getting a little fatigued with it. If you have been lucky enough to work from home, decide as I did to splurge on yourself for some tech to make your day go better. These were worth the investment. Oh, and wear a mask!
My biggest issue is the audio quality, I use a few headsets, even cheaper than this one, that have much better soundstage and clarity, this is a huge disappointment for just listening to music, overall the sound is muffled and muddy, there's almost no separation and soundstage.
On the positive side, I think the new design looks way better than the previous gen and the battery life is pretty good.
- Ear pads are smaller, less area to disperse pressure, uncomfortable after 20min
- Microphone no longer magnetically clips to band in the up position
- Controls are small buttons on the rim of the ear cup instead of on the side/surface, harder to find
- On big heads like mine, the band comically pokes out
- Buttons and microphone feel flimsy
- Way too expensive for what it is, especially without any major upgrades over the 75
- No ANC (I know it's in the description, but it's listed last as I'm comparing the the 75)
Also the red lights signal my spouse that I’m on active call.
... and another headset into the trash. I
It’s a bit tight on my ears, and yet they still feel like they could slip off my head.
