This uses 5 laser cartridges. When you run out of a color, it stops. You cannot get any more life out of a cartridge by shaking to redistribute the toner. You cannot opt to print anyway. Hence, if you need copies in a hurry for a meeting and you happen to be the one using the printer when it runs out, you have to stop and insert the new cartridge right then and there. These cartridges are expensive. The print is good, but then again, that is because you get so little life out of the cartridges.

I am replacing this dud with another printer after less than 2 years. This was a major purchase for a school Art department with limited funds. The write ups sounded good and prints cheaper than the other printer I had in mind. The printer was to replace inkjets so we could network with a number of eMacs and make life easier. Hmmm.... I had to get an HP guy into make the thing work properly and that took calls around the world till I got someone to come in who lived near. He fiddled and fixed after a while but problems continued - he came in twice and it work sporadically for a year but would stop printing for no reason, print at odd times for no reason, pressing flashing buttons ?? why were they flashing - who knows? I 'd get full colour copies of the machine advertising using up pages of ink. This year has been all down hill I have wasted so much time on the machine and have very disappointed students. Good point : print quality is OK for the printer type.

There are a lot of good review on this printer. After doing what i felt was adequate research i purchased the 2550n for the networking and inexpensive color printing. I wasnt wanting photo perfection just nice color printing. The first machine i bought worked fine for about 40 pages and then the lower tray caused an "unexpected sheet size" error that would not resolve. I returned the item to Amazon and they quickly replaced the item. The second printer didnt work right out of the box. No printing other than the self diagnosis page saying "all was fine". I couldnt get it to work at all! How frustrating. I would not be lured by the seemingly apparent low cost of the printing, ive wasted so much time trying to get this thing to work.

I bought the printer because I read reviews saying that it had excellent print quality. The fact that it was supposed to be noisy and slow was ok, since I don't print high volumes and the price of the printer is very good for a network color laser.I found the print quality to be disappointing, however. It's better than an inkjet but not nearly as sharp as a monochrome laser. I can't tell whether it's worse than comparable color lasers--it's just not as good as I expected. The thing that really ticked me off is that the cartridges expire after a set number of pages even if there's ink left in them. At $600 for a replacement set of cartridges, this sleazy trick can make a sizeable difference in operating cost. The effect is even worse when you get an error with a stream of mis-printed pages with just a couple of characters on each page. Better be around the printer to make sure there's no error that spews out 50 pages of gibberish (there goes $10). I hope HP cleans up its act now that Fiorina is gone, because a reputation for sleaziness is easy to get and hard to recover from. At least the printer shipped with full cartridges, not half-empty ones (a trick other companies use).On the plus side, HP's customer support was excellent. Initially, the printer would sometimes work and sometimes not, completely unpredictably. The HP representative correctly diagnosed the problem as a physical problem with the Ethernet cable. To my surprise, replacing the Ethernet cable fixed all the problems. The rep was bright, spoke flawless English and fixed the problem quickly. Overall the support was outstanding. On the plus side: low price for a color network laser, relatively compact size, reasonable printing cost per page, reliable operation, user-friendly software, excellent HP support. On the minus side: slow speed, noisy operation, built-in electronic cartridge expiration counter, disappointing print quality (not awful, but not as good as expected from reviews).Overall, the questionable print quality tips the scale against rating this printer higher.

A nice printer marred by a couple of annoying faults:1. The supplied HP Toolbox software only works on Windows. If you are a MacOS X user you cannot configure most of the settings on this printer without using a PC despite all of the documentation that comes with the printer saying otherwise. HP makes no mention of the fact that there is no HP Toolbox software for MacOS X on their website.2. It's noisy when starting up and printing. And to make matters worse, the printer will calibrate itself every 8 hours making even more noise. Despite what the manual says you cannot change this period so it will end up running in the middle of the night. So if you are sensitive to noise/and or sharing the room with this printer, then it might not be the printer for you.Otherwise the print quality is decent enough. Don't expect photo quality with color prints and some color banding appears if you are using lower quality laser printer paper. Text however is crisp and clean. If you can live with the above faults then take a look. Otherwise look elsewhere.

I'm wishing I had read a few of these reviews in advance of our purchase of the HP 2550 nine months ago. I'll simply reiterate what several reviews have already mentioned - reasonably priced machine ($499), BUT, my small organization doesn't do a huge amount of printing, and we now have to replace the imaging drum at $399 (Can). I would have appreciated "user-friendly" information (mind you, from both the big box that sold it to me and the manufacturer) that clearly indicated the 1 year warranty doesn't apply to the drum, and that with normal wear and tear, you'll replace the drum frequently (and that it's very expensive to replace). I would have appreciated knowing that there was a way I could have extended the drum usage by changing a relatively simple default setting (so it doesn't "eat" the colour thereby reducing the wear on the drum).Expensive lesson learned.

This printer was purchased to be shared among 4 co-workers. It was great until we "Needed" to replace the black cartridge after two months. A new HP cartridge was purchased and every thing worked fine for two weeks. Then the drum light came on. I thought it was a little soon for a new drum so I called HP support. They said that basically every time the black cartridge needs to be replaced the drum will also. That's $100 for the black and $200 for the drum. A drum was purchased and the printer seemed to work fine. Then the yellow cartridge went out. I thought this was very odd since color is not used very much. I did a little research on this printer and found out that you can replace the microchips on the drum and cartridges. I ordered them from e-bay. I installed them on the old drum unit and surprise, surprise it worked. Then installed one on the old black, and the old yellow, and you guessed it they still worked as well. They worked for two months until the black toner actually ran out and left streaks on the page.Print quality overall is good, but the shaddy cartridge replacement, and noise will have me looking for a new laser next year.

I rate this printer at 3.5 stars.THIS IS NOT A PHOTO PRINTER!!! If you're planning on buying this printer to print beautiful glossy color photos, IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! Every color picture I print from this printer comes out matte, even with the glossiest photo paper. Get a real photo printer for your color photo printing. This printer comes with ONLY 64 MB of RAM. This means you'll be waiting forever for your color document to print out. I've had to wait 3 or more minutes most of the time for a color print out. If you want to add more RAM to speed-up the process, it will set you back an additional $250.00 for another 64 MB.This printer is LOUD!!!Basically, you get what you pay for.Oh, I do have some positive comments, too. You can't beat the price for a laser color printer (especially with all the rebates). It's great for someone with a home business who will be printing small quantities of flyers. From my experience with HP laser printers, they make a quality printer. It beats the Epson inkjet I used to have. The color ink cartridges in that printer always dried out in about 4-5 months.

Has great output, but after 14 months (just out of warranty) and only 5500 color pages printed (and over $350 in consummables), this thing suddenly has broken -- the carousel is apparently a weak point, a common breakage, and it costs as much to fix as to buy a new one. Appalling. This thing replaced an old Apple laser printer that worked like a tank without any problems whatsoever for over a decade. This is incompetent design at its worst.

Wish I could give this printer zero stars. I have had the HP2550L for 15 months. It is not working at the moment because it needs a third imaging drum - at a cost of approximately $180.00 and two toner cartridges. I set it to print gray scale and it still used up the ink in the red and blue toner cartridges. I bought a new printer about eight months ago to do my black printing (an HP2420 - great little printer) and yesterday bought a new color printer - not an HP. It would have been cheaper to buy a new printer everytime I needed to replace the toner cartridges or imaging drum.

Buyer beware, the printer is priced great, the consumables are not. This printer uses toner like crazy. And it has some sort of feature that seems to estimate the amount of toner usage. When it estimates it is out of toner it will no longer let you print even though the toner cartridge is not empty. I recently had to replace a cartridge that was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 full. What a scam!Print quality is poor at best. I have owned 8 computer printers and this one is the first that does not allow you to control the brightness and contrast of the print. What's up with that? And the printer tends to print dark and the colors do not match the originals at all.And where is the paper tray??? I guess this is an optional item. The paper feed bracket that comes with the printer extends way out in front of the machine and has a capacity of only about 75 sheets.I cannot recommend this printer and would definately not choose to purchase another like it. My old Minolta color laser printer was a much better printer, but unfortunately it died after 6 years of heavy usage.

The Laserjet 3700 is a tragic example of what is wrong with HP nowadays. The printer itself is fantastic. Fast, clean printing, and looks great. But the problems are fatal.1. First and foremost, the printer drivers do not support collating documents. So you must do it manually. Even though HP knows about the issue--it is on their support site--they have not updated the printer driver in over a year and a half. The workdaround--to use the 4600 printer driver--does not work at all.2. Color bleeds and is inconsistent.3. Replenishing the toner cost $900. Yes, $900. And now that HP is suing all the alternative sources for toner and using DCMA to force you to buy their products, you can expect to pay $900 each and every time this printer needs more toner. If you own this printer for 5 years, it brings the total cost of ownership to $6,000. And this assumes you only buy new toner once a year. Most people will need more.So this product perfectly captures why HP is screwed. Great technology, but horrific support and a price gauging business model.I have bought HP printers my whole life. But after seeing the lack of quality in the drivers and the outrageous lock-in strategy and prices, this one will be my last. I hate to say it, but next time I'm buying a Dell.

It's October 2004 and I've had my 2550L for 3 months now. Overall I'm very satisfied with the product. I have it plugged into my USB 2.0 port and it prints quickly. Also the quality of the text and pictures are good. I selected it because of it's size, USB 2.0 compatible and price. It was one of the least expensive color laser printers on the market and one of the smallest. It really is quite amazing how HP has figured out how to put all four color cartridges in such a compact package.I print mostly black and white but wanted the option of color without the smearing ink of an ink jet printer. (I also don't like ink jets because you have to clean the heads and replace the cartridges too often.) This printer prints black and white faster and color a little slower and that was just right for my needs.I've owned Epson, Brother, and Panasonic printers before. This is my first HP and I really do notice a difference in the quality of the build. I would definitely buy a HP printer again. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Well this model doesn't come with the paper tray that mounts to the bottom. I didn't think it would bother me but it did. So I wound up buying the paper tray seperate. I should have bought one of the other 2550s that included it to start with because it was tough to locate the paper tray option and buy it on its own. It also cost me more all together vs buying a higher end 2550 that came with it already. One thing that I didn't read in the other reviews that I would have liked to have known is that the printer cycles periodically. It intially scared my wife and I in the middle of the night because we heard noises in our home that we had never heard before. It was the printer cycling. While it is relatively noisy I don't think it would have stopped me from buying it, but I would have liked to have known in advance.

Purchased this printer at a very good price then realised why!The printer cartridges cost ?240. I print 95% Black and white images, but the special chips on each of the cartridges count down from 2000 to 0 for each print wether you print one word letters or full size photos. I have printed about 1500 pictures and its telling me to replace the black cartridge, even though the prints are still perfect. I have not used any colour yet but each print counts this as usage for all the colour carts as well. The colour ones are still 100% full but its telling me they are only 25% full. You HAVE to replace them when they are full wether you like it or not because the printer wont work. I have been told you can buy the chips on their own to fool the printer but these cost ?9 each. do not buy a chipped cartridge printer!

If you use a Mac, I advise you not to purchase this printer. In spite of the supposed support for OS X, most of the features of this printer are not available, as HP has not bothered to make the toolbox available for the Mac. I found this out having wasted a lot of hours trying to adjust print quality settings and FINALLY getting sombody at HP to tell me I can't access most of them. Now, not only will I return the printer, I'll never buy another HP product. False advertising.

As other reveiwers have noted, the smart chips inside the toner cartridges are anything but. They generally force you to toss perfectly good toner catridges and imaging drums away before they're even near empty. Our per page cost, not counting the paper itself, sky rocketed to around 6.5 cents a sheet! Turns out, it may be cheaper to buy a new printer than to restock this one.

If you're like me, then you were blinded by the idea of a nice color laser printer for less then $500! Sure, these days you could go black and white for less then $150, even as low as $99. Is the color worth it? In my opinion: YES!This printer, of all the color lasers, is the sleekest and most compact. Right off the bat, you will try and try to open up the paper tray at the bottom of the device, only to realize that it doesn't open. So where does the paper go? Well, that's the main negative...a part of the front panel opens up and the paper just hangs there much like the back of a bubble jet printer. But in this case, it completely ruins the nice look of the machine, and opens up for dust to accumulate. But for an additional $150-$300, you can buy a 250-850 page tray and this problem will be solved. This is an annoying thing, but I guess it is the price you pay for the price you pay. If you want it cheap, there has to be comprimises.Output is AMAZING! Text is kickass, graphics are unbelievable, and photos are better then expected from a color laser. THIS IS NOT A PHOTO PRINTER, so dont buy it expecting great photo prints. If you want Kodak prints, buy a photo printer. If you want lots of quick color printouts at low cost, buy the 2550L.Otherwise, I have no complaints. This thing is fast, cheap, and output is superior. And for god sake it is only $499!!! For that price, it's almost like, you dont have the right to complain!Color output is off, like pinks instead of purples and yellows instead of orange. Tinker with the controls and you can match the color on your screen.Simply: Get this, it's sweet.-Brad

Seemed like an OK printer for a single user, until one day it displayed an e error message that even the techs at HP didn't know what it meant, so I went through a week of dragging the 70 pounds of it first to a local authorized dealer, who couldn't fix it, and then to UPS to mail it back for replacement. I can only hope it doens't happen again. Or, if it does that it is still under warranty.
