Great printer, quality printing, fast, quiet and economical for my needs. I use it for ebay related printing of
about 2000 pages a month 90% B/W 10% Colour. I must admit not even used lots of the bells and whistles as no need to yet.
Such as wireless printing, double sided ect.
Great value for money. Highly recommended.

Fantastic printer does the job - one slight irritation is that if you use the wired connection then the wireless does not work. Not difficult to fix as I wired the printer to my network and added a wireless router to connect to the printer wirelessly.

The product came quickly and it was easy to set up. Works fine. What I really like about this one is that you can buy knock off laser refills and they come as separate units for each color. Since one usually uses more black than any other color you can buy a black unit without having to buy the other colors

I have had a 2550L for several years and it has been fabulous, the best printer I ever purchased. However, HP in their latest printer updates, made it so this product will NOT work. As of 11/1/2012 HP has stated...they are aware of this problem and will be releasing a solution "in the near future" As of today HP has not done it. Check HP website in the forum for updates.

This is our second color laser printer in the past two weeks, and after a week of use we feel this is a keeper. The previous printer we tried, the Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking, was a step better than this printer in nearly every respect, except color accuracy. But my wife had to have a printer that was highly accurate for her project and this little printer was able to meet her high expectations. The Brother just could not cut it with the color accuracy, despite all the advanced calibration steps we tried.Let me admit that I was a bit apprehensive about getting this printer given the many negative early reviews. Thankfully, it seems HP has addressed the quality problems with the later releases of this printer since it has been receiving excellent reviews lately. The print quality of this printer is astonishingly nice. HP is confident enough to let the printer print out a photo quality test page that has brilliant, vibrant colors, and amazing depth for a laser printer. The build quality of this printer is good but perhaps a step below the substantially heavier Brother HL-4040cdn, which seems definitely capable of a higher duty cycle. This printer has a smaller footprint and feels more at home in a home-office as opposed to a business office. That said, in our first week of use we have had no technical issues with this printer whatsoever and, despite being slower and less robust than the Brother, it suits our needs just fine. After networking it with our Linksys router and assigning it a fixed IP number, we found to our delight that most of the settings of the printer can be manipulated using a web browser after pointing the browser to the printer's IP number. The printer's built in webserver page displays information such as toner levels and estimated remaining prints and has a full menu system to allow you to change the settings. Our only grouse with this printer is that the default color output for photos is a bit too dark, causing dull pictures. I browsed through HP's Support pages and found that the dark color issue was quite common, but I could not find a solution for the correct Print Density settings for this printer. So, after much testing, and lots of wasted paper, I came to the same conclusion as another reviewer that there was too much magenta, which tended to smear the subtle details. My Color Adjustments:Using the "HP ToolboxFX" program that is provided, or through the web interface, it is necessary to modify the "Print Density" settings under "Device Settings". I arrived at the following settings: cyan: 0, magenta: -2, yellow: -1 and black: 0. To keep things simple, I kept the values consistent accross all the print density attributes, i.e., contrasts, highlights, midtones and shadows, although each individual attribute should probably be further tweaked. To my eyes colors were true, with slight heaviness in magenta remaining. It was also necessary to brighten the pictures themselves slightly, using a software tool such as Adobe Photoshop or Arcsoft Photoimpression. I simply used Photoimpression to bump up the brightness by 10% (or "auto brighten" by two levels). Finally, when printing, I found it is also necessary to set the the color theme to Photo. I did try sRGB, Vivid and Photo (Adobe RGB 1998) color themes, but they all tended to push too much magenta. Only with the color theme set to Photo was I able to get true reds and vibrant, almost photo quality prints on 8.5 x 11 glossy photo paper. Conclusion:Since there is a relatively easy way to get around the dark color issue, I have no problem edorsing the HP CP1518ni as an excellent color laser printer for home use.

I have had this printer HP 2550L for about 10 years now, when this model came out it cost $1200 wish was pricey for me, but I wanted use it for a home business, and I was able to get a floor model for $700 during the holiday season. I am still surprise to see them selling used versions and supplies online. As far a cost it is very affordable as far as performance it is very slow and a bit noisy but it gets the work done. You can even get the toner and imaging drum replacment at descent prices online still, note there are different quality of toners. You can't really go wrong with some HP products. I am in the process of buying a refurbrished printer because my old model has aged due to wear and tear, and I can still use my toner and imaging drums, the printers usually does not include tone cartridges so I save money that way. Feel free to drop me a line if you would like to more of my experiences.

(I bought this printer in 2005 - and this is the review I wrote at the time on another site. I am trying to include more reviews at Amazon so decided to transfer it here.)I am mostly a personal user, with some small-business use thrown in. I will get NOWHERE near the 30,000 monthly cycle pages this printer is rated for (I won't even get near that in a year)...so why did I get this one? Especially when I already have a monochrome laser and photo inkjet printer?? Because I was looking at spending upwards of $700 on a "business" inkjet printer to do what I wanted...so figured why not start with a $400 color laser printer instead to see if that worked? So, what did I want to do that my other two printers couldn't? Print double-sided color cardstock prints (i.e. Avery notecard stock). I was tired of messing around with my inkjet trying to get presentable prints. And by this I mean prints without wheel marks or ink drops that also weren't ripped or torn from jams, etc., that I would feel comfortable selling to my client. The inkjet, in its favor, gave me beautiful prints...but it just would not handle the notecard stock nicely! The paper path has a very small turnaround, and anything thick or perforated just has too hard a time. On my worst job, I ended up wasting 20% of the entire job (100 sheets for a 500 sheet job). But still, I couldn't rationalize spending $500 on a color laser (plus the replacement ink costs). After that job was completed, I started thinking...How much is all my time and energy and frustration worth (in addition to the wasted product)? It was then I seriously started considering a color laserjet. I picked the HP 2550L because it was in stock at our local Staples (plus I happen to work there). Because I like HP overall and have been satisfied with every HP printer I've ever owned, I chose it over the cheaper $400 Minolta color laser. So, what's the verdict?I won't be returning it, so I guess that says something! But as I said in my pros and cons, the prints are BEAUTIFUL...but plan on babysitting any double-sided printing you want to do. But let's start at the beginning.UNPACKING: I'm fairly computer/hardware/software literate, but I'm still a big believer in following instructions, so I had the book out for each step. It would have been fairly self-explanatory anyway...take off all the orange stuff! It's neat how all the toners fit in the machine--it really is a small machine when you think about it, considering there are FOUR toners plus a drum in it. It was extremely easy and fool-proof to load the toners.INSTALLATION: Even though I love HP...as with every other printer of theirs I've ever installed, it didn't work on the first try and I had to uninstall, reboot, then install again. It's a good thing the process goes smoothly and doesn't take too long. It added quite a few things to my startup and registry (I have programs that let me know when this happens) which I didn't particularly like...but I figure I can play with those things later.APPLICATIONS: One thing I'm not particularly fond of is the Toolbox. Why? It has to access the internet to work (which I know because ZoneAlarm or something else asked for permission). Now, it's just a local connection, but it opens a webpage to get to it... so, it's something else I need to give access to. What happened to a normal toolbox that just pops up on the screen? Now I have to wait for my browser to open to get printer info! That said, the Toolbox gives you tons of information, including how much life (in pages and percents) is left on each toner cartridge and the drum.PRINTING: For the test print via the Toolbox, it took about 30 seconds to rev up, but it only took about 4 seconds to print. On some larger jobs, it took up to a minute to cycle through whatever it's cycling through to start printing. But, again, it only took a few seconds to print...when there wasn't a jam. Yes, I experienced jams. Here's the scoop: as I mentioned earlier, I was printing note cards. I set the printer properties for the correct paper (cardstock), I put in a stack of 50, and it printed FLAWLESSLY. I was kicking myself for not buying this printer last year. I thought "Wow, this job will be done in 10 minutes instead of all day on the inkjet!" And then I went to print the second side [insert music of doom here]. I put the entire stack of 50 in and did one test print (as I do, to make sure it's correct). It worked. Yea! So I set it for 49 more and...jam. Jam. Jam. Jam. Jam. Hmmm, maybe too many sheets? So I tried one sheet at a time. I tried five sheets at a time. I tried 25 sheets at a time. I tried one sheet on top of standard paper. I tried hand-feeding one sheet at at time. I tried hand-feeding one sheet at a time off of a stack (meaning I pushed the top sheet taut against the paper tray so the mechanism would be sure to pull it in, similar to what I used to have to do on the inkjet--sorry if it's not clear but it's hard to describe). And....voila! It worked! And

I purchased this printer to replace a different small color laser that died (Samsung CLP-300).This one blows my previous one away. The color accuracy when printing photos full page size on normal paper is amazing. On photo paper even better. Looks like a photo print that you would get from developing film and having prints made. I really was looking to replace the printer that died for normal routine printing and was hoping that it might also do a good job of printing color photos because I was normally using a separate inkjet printer for that to get better quality. Surpassed my expectations and I can do both routine printing and color photo printing with this one printer.Print speed is a slightly slower than my previous printer, but perfectly acceptable for my home use. I do like that start up time from when I send print job until it starts printing is much faster than my Samsung was. Love that is has a manual feed right on the front of the printer for envelopes and photo paper, so don't have to remove paper cartridge and change papers (Samsung CLP-300 didn't). I'm very pleased with this printer. Nice that it has built in networking so others in my house can use it too.

When I buy a laser printer I have two criteria that must be met: it must be postscript compatible for printing graphic design proofs and it must have fairly accurate color. This printer has done a fair job of both. It is postscript compatible but the accurate color is a little lacking. I've found that color proofs are a little dark and slightly heavy in magenta and cyan.I've owned HP color laser jets in the past and I like that there is no drum roller, only cartridges to replace. This can save $200 in replacement part costs. I like that you can replace one color at a time and I find that I don't have to do it too often. The cartridges are way overpriced but I think that is common with any printer these days.I have no trouble printing on a variety of papers. I never use the card readers in the front but it is convenient to have them.I have hooked the printer up to a network with no trouble. It does not take too long to print but is fairly loud. It is also loud when it cycles on its own.It does have a power save mode that it goes into automatically.I really wish I had a second drawer to keep preprinted paper (invoices or letterhead). I have not found that the front paper feeder is easy to use so I always use the pull out drawer.I would recommend this printer for small or home office or personal use.

I'm the IT manager at a medium size company and we bought this printer around September 2007. I realise this printer may not be readily available any longer but I wanted to add this for posterity and to link to the other review.I can say that were immediately dissapointed at the fact that it did not have a built in tray, only an external flap and page feeder. It does not do duplex printing. A good lesson to look for these items.Print quality is good. I agree with the author of review on the "Hewlett Packard LaserJet 2550N Photo Printer" which I sense is the same printer as this.He said, "Areas of a single color, such as bar charts, are more solidly filled with less variation that the Brother. The HP is much better at light color hues, especially with text on a colored background." I am entirely happy with the print performance BUT....The HP loses big time in cost per page and really makes me mad at what they do... so much so that I think what they do is, or should, be illegal. Each toner cartridge and the drum have a chip that counts down to 0 and the printer refuses to work until you replace it. The toner could have 1,000 more pages left in it but you won't get it. The drum could last 10,000 more pages before the print quality starts to suffer but you won't get it. The Brother warns you when it thinks the consumables need replacing but won't suddenly refuse to print because of it.The HP is also much slower in pages per minute when printing color as it has to multipass the paper for each of the colors. We're now considering a Lexmark.

This is one amazing color laserjet - probably one of the best bang for the buck you can find among all color laser printers. I had recently bought this printer in order to print out more than 2,500 color pages (10 copies of my Ph.D. dissertation). I needed the best quality print-outs since I had a lot of pictures and artwork within my document. As a result, I had to buy a printer that was of high quality but also reasonably priced since I'm on a budget - and I wasn't disappointed at all!Upon installing the software, I was already amazed by the test print out. The printed picture on standard multipurpose paper looked as if it was taken from a profesionally printed photograph. The text was crisp, and the colors were bright! In terms of print-out quality, this is by far one of the best printers you can find.As for some technical specs, the printer does print 8 ppm, so depending on your needs, this may be good or bad. It does offer USB or Ethernet connection which is extremely convenient. The best thing is that no matter how large your document is, it prints within 30 seconds upon hitting the print button on your computer (and this is when I run my HP on a shared network). However, buyers beware - I have had some difficulty installing the complete HP software since I am running Vista on PC. It took a little longer than I wanted, but I was able to get everything installed at the end of the day :) Overall, no other printers can beat this one, and I highly recommend this printer to those who demand high quality prints from a printer that is economically priced!

From other places for even cheaper, buying it here would be a rip off.Secondly, if you run out of ink, your better of throwing the printer away and buying a new one. The cost to buy the 4 replacement cartridges is about $100 more than just buying this printer new again. That being said, it does a great print job.

This is the worst printer I have ever had to use. It is out of service almost every day. Everyone in the office knows that you cannot print to the HP printer. It demands a constant supply of ink and randomly stops working. When it is working it takes forever to get started, god only knows what it is doing when it is making all that noise, but it's not printing on paper. If I ever find out who traded our old $20 laserjet out for this high dollar turd I will personally strangle them.Right now it will not print, it's flashing an error message (A sideways "C" flashing with a green light). This is a common error, however you may also enjoy when it stops and displays flashing orange light next to Exclamation point in a triangle, or flashy straight bar with two dots, a flat side and two humps in the middle. What these errors mean are a complete mystery. HP's tech support site will lead you down a long road of clicking on things and getting nowhere. They will offer you a million papers describing minute technical details, but there is nothing describing what the excited triangle means, or what to do to un-excite it.Randomly openeing panels and reinserting cartridges will cause it to recycle which takes about two minutes. Sometimes this will get you a few pages of your document printed. During this time it sounds like a construction site with things pounding, gears turning, papers moving about, but usually nothing happens, it just goes back to whatever it wants to do.

I had a Samsung CL-300, about the same size as this pritner, but I hated the color from it. So when I got to use this HP at work, I was so surprised and HAPPY that the color is very close to what I see on screen. Prints nicely too. Since it's a laser printer, large scale photo doesn't look as nice as inkjets, but still does a great job!I love the manual duplex. I didn't understand what it meant until I tried it. I always had a problem with figuring out which side I put back in for duplex printing, but HP made it easier. When it prints out, just put the one-side-printed-paper back in the paper tray, without flipping it over or turning it, or whatever. Just put it in the tray the same way it come out.The worst thing about this printer is the toner usage. The toolbox application installed in the computer says the black toner is still 60% full, then after a minute, it went down to 10%... It's been less than 7 weeks and only printed 600 pages. It's suppose to print up to 2000 pages... After another print, the cyan toner did the same, from 60% - 10%... The toners aren't excatly cheap. The fuser is connected to each individual toners, so I guess that's why the toners are more expensive.I am thinking of replacing my Samsung (at home) with this (buying one for myself). I love the color and that I can rely on the close accuracy on the colors, but the price of the toners is making me think twice.

The Good:1) The Price - it is on sale for 299.00 in a number of places. A network printer at that price is a steal.2) Image quality is sharp and crisp. Colors are fairly accurate.3) No problems were encountered installing printer on computer running Vista. However, there is a lot of stuff (optional programs) on the installation so a typical install can take a long time (in my case well over a half hour) during which time I did wonder why it was taking so long. I guess, in this age of "bloatware", this may expected. The Bad:HP does not make high yield toner cartridges for this series of printers (this one and HP Color Laserjet CP1215 Printer). High yield cartridges are a great money saver since they typically give you 2-3 times more pages while typically costing only 20-25% more than standard cartridges. So unless HP comes out with high yield toner cartridges for this printer in the future, you will be trapped into paying about twice as much per printed page than you would if you purchased a printer that can use high yield cartridges. At about $280.00 for a replacement set of cartridges, the low printer price savings could easily be overcome by higher printing cost if you intend on doing a lot of color printing. The Product Description doesn't list the replacement toner cartridges. Here they are:CB540A Black print cartridge with HP ColorSphere tonerCB541A Cyan print cartridge with HP ColorSphere tonerCB542A Yellow print cartridge with HP ColorSphere tonerCB543A Magenta print cartridge with HP ColorSphere toner

After reading positive reviews on the HP site, I thought this printer was a perfect match for my needs. This heavy printer was easy getting my computer to recognize the printer but once I hit print, that was where all the problems began. The drums made a loud screeching sound and the first page was a solid red with black ink. From there, nothing could print without streaking or blurring. Even after cleaning the drums, horrible print, page after page. Now, more than one week later, support services have delayed exchange, so much for "next business day," so currently am looking for another printer.Obviously, this new design has flaws. Someday day, it might become a great printer but I would not purchase at this time and save yourself aggravation. Wished we could have read someone's honest opinion about this product. The firmware update for this HP product will not run on Leopard (OSX.5). I have sent emails to HP asking for a solution (both to their pre-sale group and their mac support group), but there has been NO REPLY. Although I haven't purchased this printer, HP's support on this issue leaves something to be desired. I might consider the printer, but designing a firmware update that is operating system specific is quite stupid as: 1) there is no good reason to do so; 2) Leopard is not exactly a recent development; 3) if the firmware update was important for the product to work properly (which one would presume to be the case), then making it work should be something of a priority. HP claims in its literature that the printer is compatible with "10.4 and greater." This is obviously an untruth.

I've always liked HP's printer quality. In fact, I've had several black and white HP laser printer in the past, and all have performed flawlessly for years and years. Recently, then, I decided to "upgrade" (yeah, that's a joke -- upgrade) to a color laser printer -- stop using the expensive ink jet I thought!Well, we have two of these 2550n printers in the building here, and both have developed a similar problem after about 700 pages. Neither one will print anything but blank pages, and both develop some strange series of lights on the control panels. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in the light ups either. One time, the drum light might come on. Another time, all four toner lights will come on. A third time, we might get just two of the toner lights, and still another time, we might get the toner and drum lights on only this time they'll be blinking.Unplug them and leave them unplugged for a few days, and you might get a green "go" light right after turning it on again. If you're really lucky, you might get a clean printout, but that's the only printout you're going to get until the printer has rested a few more days again.Yeah, it's hard work being a color laser printer! Don't, I repeat, DON'T buy one of these printer -- not even used! They're bad, BAD news!!!!!

I did a bunch of research before buying the HP 2550N, because this was my first color laser printer for my home and home business use. (I've had a LaserJet 6P monochrome laser for years that just keeps on chugging along, trouble-free, and costs very little for toners. But I finally sold that to a client who needed a cheap laser around that size, and figured I'd move up to color.)I went with the HP 2550N primarily because I found one on eBay, new in the box, for under $400 - and I had basic requirements of a unit with good Mac OS X support and good networked printing support. I couldn't really beat the price and still get both of these things.Unfortunately, when my 2550N arrived, the front paper tray appeared to be broken. I could hear a piece of plastic rattling around inside the printer, and it refused to pull any paper from the lower tray, whether the front tray was open or closed. My call to HP support didn't go well either. The first rep. I spoke with obviously was a foreigner with a thick accent (hard to understand). He tried to tell me my printer's warranty had already expired! I told him that was impossible, because I just purchased it and filled out the warranty registration on the HP web site. He told me to wait a few days and call back, because it takes a while for it to update in their system. (Huh? HP sells *computers* and their own warranty registration system is that slow??)I called several days later, reaching another foreigner, who told me my warranty was indeed still in effect, but this time - he claimed it expired in only 3 or 4 more months. (What happened to the 1 year warranty??) Then he forwarded me to the first native English speaking person I encountered; a woman in their "customer care" division. She was relatively helpful, but ended up telling me my best option was to lug the printer over to a local repair shop that would do the repair work for me under warranty. (HP supposedly had this printer on backorder, so even if I sent it back to them directly for repair or replacement, it would take 2 weeks!)I then called the repair shop, and they told me they wouldn't do the service work on it, because "if pieces are physically broken and rolling around loose in the unit, HP isn't going to actually cover that as warranty work and we'll get stuck not being compensated for our service on it." Great!Thankfully, I finally ended up getting this resolved through the seller on eBay. But if you're stuck with no resource other than HP for service, good luck!As for the relative noise of the printer - it does have a habit of occasionally "waking up" and going through a "chunka-chunka-chunka-ka-chunk" sound, which seems to be it rotating through the toners in the "carousel" inside of it. Can't figure out why that's necessary, unless HP does that to keep the toner from "clumping up" inside the cartridges or something? When actually printing, you get this same type of sound before the first page prints, but it seems to spit out remaining pages of a multi-page print job considerably faster than the first page. It certainly wouldn't be described as printing "quickly", but you also have to remember that unlike an inkjet, it "downloads" the whole page before printing it out in one swoop. I think some people get impatient watching the blinking green light on the printer and think it's slower printing than their inkjets. Though actually, the inkjets take just as long (or longer) to print a page of color graphics. They just "feel" faster because you see them drawing each line as the job progresses.Print quality seems quite good to me. I came into this knowing it wasn't going to be optimal for such things as printing glossy photos for framing. That's why I still keep an Epson Stylus Photo inkjet printer around. But it excels at such tasks as printing out color brochures on card-stock paper or making one's own business cards.

I bought this printer on clearance at an office supply about 18 months ago on a whim. Network setup was easy and the thing works consistently. I've never had a page jam once in the thing. The front panel multi-tray is truly useful and is much better quality (thicker plastic, more durable) than many current model HP color laser printers.I'll admit, the photo output is terrible. But that's not really what color laser printers are really intended for. They're intended for business color; that is, adding color and images to business documents, not for printing glossy "lab quality" photo prints. It is noisy and it does periodically refresh itself (can be disconcerting in the middle of the night). For it's time and the price I paid for it, I'm more than satisfied and would have bought it again. I use this printer pretty often and I'm still using the toner cartridges it came with (and still have more than 50% left in each). Even if they run out, refill kits are easily obtainable and will refill the cartridges for a tenth of what HP charges for new ones. All in all, for a basic office color laser printer, this one is pretty awesome.

I had a HPLaserJet 4M for over 10 years and I was so very happy with it that when I decided to get a color laser I also thought this one would be great. My complaints are basically that it is a very very very expensive printer to keep running. Color cartidges are about $70 each so I figure that I could throw the unit away and buy another for the cost of replacing all the cartriges. Also it is really slow even after the first page prints. Interestingly too it seems to run a cycle through check every once in a while like it is trying to reestablish its IP connection. The printer also likes to jam paper and this is really frustrating if you are trying to print out a 10 page document and it jams every other page. I don't recommend this printer regardless of price.

I've had it for about 2 years. Low volume. It works. Computers are complex machines. This printer is complex. It always takes some intelligence and thought to get these things to do what you want. If you are not up to it, go to a copy store. If it breaks, I can get the new one for a cheaper price then I paid for it.

I have liked HP printers in the past and have been very pleased with my LaserJet 5L which I have owned for ten years. To take advantage of HPs trade in program, I decided to upgrade to a 2550n color laser printer. I read the first review here, on this printer and dismissed the low rating as a fluke. I purchased the printer anyway, and then became disgusted.First, it failed right out of the box. I was very careful to follow each instruction to the letter and once everything was installed, the failure light would turn on after cycling through the cartridges a few times. After I power cycled it a few times, it finally passed it's diagnostics and was ready. I print a test page, it looks good. I print another and it fails. Power cycle again, the printer is ready. I print two more test pages and it fails again. This flakey behavior continued again after I connected the printer to my PC. I could print a few pages once, then again, but after the third or fourth time it would randomly fail. This had nothing to do with paper jams, but seemed to occur when switching from one color cartridge to another. The simple LEDs that flash at you tell nothing about what is wrong, so I would strongly recommend buying a printer with a LCD display. The software was difficult to install, especially when I wanted to have it use the ethernet port instead of the USB interface. The printer options are very minimal and not comparable to printers like the Samsung CLP-510n which allow things like printing multiple pages on the same sheet. By the way, I don't necessarily recommend the Samsung printer but the user manual can be downloaded from their web site and the printing options are quite comprehensive. If the LaserJet 2550n would remain idle for 20-30 minutes, it would suddenly spring to life and make all sorts of noises when there was nothing to print. It sounded like the cartridges were tumbling around. Why can't it do something like this immediately and then just stay quiet? When printing, it is also quite noisy as it cycles through the cartridges. The printer is slow. I sent it a picture and it took slightly over a minute. I did it immediately again (it should be all warmed up) and it still took another minute. The processor inside the printer is too slow and real-world page per minute numbers may be disappointing. The only real positive thing I could say is the print quality was good, even for pictures, provided that they are not expanded in size. Some people like the OKI C5150n or the Brother HL-2700cn. I haven't seen what the Brother prints like, but the OKI is quiet and print quality is as good as the HP while printing much faster. Dell also sells a color printer in this class, the 3100cn. Although the HP printer may be the smallest, I didn't like the noise and reliablity and so I think there are much better choices out there.

The printer puts out acceptable business output (nowhere near photo quality) but I am currently printing a graphic that ended up at 24mb to the printer and it has been 38 minutes processing over a USB 2.0 connection. When I send the same graphic to our 3500 color laser, it processes in about 18 seconds and prints in 30. HP tech support told me that this was acceptable for such a "large" file and perhaps I should reduce the file size. Since I'm printing full-page graphics and not postage stamps, I guess I'll look for a good inkjet...and certainly NOT an HP!

Purchased refurbished and setup immediately after it arrived. Printer didn't immediately work on the network but did work via cable. A call to HP resolved the issue (they explained how to reset the network card) and it has worked wonderfully since then. Excellent print quality, fast enough for our home office, and everyone in the house can access it. We've used it for 1 month and had no problems. If consumables didn't cost so much and it had worked right out of the box, I would have rated it a 5.

I have had my HP 2550L for well over a year now and have had absolutely no problems with it. I frequently print on high quality, glossy paper. The ink doesn't smudge or smear. It prints clearly and is quick. With the moderate amount of printing that I do, I am only now replacing some of the color toner cartridges which is expensive. That is the downside. As another reader mentioned, it does occasionally "cycle" and when it does, makes enough noise to wake me up in the middle of the night as my office space is adjacent to the bedroom. Easily remedied by turning it off in the evenings. Overall, I feel this was a good buy for the money.

This uses 5 laser cartridges. When you run out of a color, it stops. You cannot get any more life out of a cartridge by shaking to redistribute the toner. You cannot opt to print anyway. Hence, if you need copies in a hurry for a meeting and you happen to be the one using the printer when it runs out, you have to stop and insert the new cartridge right then and there. These cartridges are expensive. The print is good, but then again, that is because you get so little life out of the cartridges.

I am replacing this dud with another printer after less than 2 years. This was a major purchase for a school Art department with limited funds. The write ups sounded good and prints cheaper than the other printer I had in mind. The printer was to replace inkjets so we could network with a number of eMacs and make life easier. Hmmm.... I had to get an HP guy into make the thing work properly and that took calls around the world till I got someone to come in who lived near. He fiddled and fixed after a while but problems continued - he came in twice and it work sporadically for a year but would stop printing for no reason, print at odd times for no reason, pressing flashing buttons ?? why were they flashing - who knows? I 'd get full colour copies of the machine advertising using up pages of ink. This year has been all down hill I have wasted so much time on the machine and have very disappointed students. Good point : print quality is OK for the printer type.

There are a lot of good review on this printer. After doing what i felt was adequate research i purchased the 2550n for the networking and inexpensive color printing. I wasnt wanting photo perfection just nice color printing. The first machine i bought worked fine for about 40 pages and then the lower tray caused an "unexpected sheet size" error that would not resolve. I returned the item to Amazon and they quickly replaced the item. The second printer didnt work right out of the box. No printing other than the self diagnosis page saying "all was fine". I couldnt get it to work at all! How frustrating. I would not be lured by the seemingly apparent low cost of the printing, ive wasted so much time trying to get this thing to work.

I bought the printer because I read reviews saying that it had excellent print quality. The fact that it was supposed to be noisy and slow was ok, since I don't print high volumes and the price of the printer is very good for a network color laser.I found the print quality to be disappointing, however. It's better than an inkjet but not nearly as sharp as a monochrome laser. I can't tell whether it's worse than comparable color lasers--it's just not as good as I expected. The thing that really ticked me off is that the cartridges expire after a set number of pages even if there's ink left in them. At $600 for a replacement set of cartridges, this sleazy trick can make a sizeable difference in operating cost. The effect is even worse when you get an error with a stream of mis-printed pages with just a couple of characters on each page. Better be around the printer to make sure there's no error that spews out 50 pages of gibberish (there goes $10). I hope HP cleans up its act now that Fiorina is gone, because a reputation for sleaziness is easy to get and hard to recover from. At least the printer shipped with full cartridges, not half-empty ones (a trick other companies use).On the plus side, HP's customer support was excellent. Initially, the printer would sometimes work and sometimes not, completely unpredictably. The HP representative correctly diagnosed the problem as a physical problem with the Ethernet cable. To my surprise, replacing the Ethernet cable fixed all the problems. The rep was bright, spoke flawless English and fixed the problem quickly. Overall the support was outstanding. On the plus side: low price for a color network laser, relatively compact size, reasonable printing cost per page, reliable operation, user-friendly software, excellent HP support. On the minus side: slow speed, noisy operation, built-in electronic cartridge expiration counter, disappointing print quality (not awful, but not as good as expected from reviews).Overall, the questionable print quality tips the scale against rating this printer higher.

A nice printer marred by a couple of annoying faults:1. The supplied HP Toolbox software only works on Windows. If you are a MacOS X user you cannot configure most of the settings on this printer without using a PC despite all of the documentation that comes with the printer saying otherwise. HP makes no mention of the fact that there is no HP Toolbox software for MacOS X on their website.2. It's noisy when starting up and printing. And to make matters worse, the printer will calibrate itself every 8 hours making even more noise. Despite what the manual says you cannot change this period so it will end up running in the middle of the night. So if you are sensitive to noise/and or sharing the room with this printer, then it might not be the printer for you.Otherwise the print quality is decent enough. Don't expect photo quality with color prints and some color banding appears if you are using lower quality laser printer paper. Text however is crisp and clean. If you can live with the above faults then take a look. Otherwise look elsewhere.
