Pro:
-Thunderbolt ports, Wifi, Bluetooth, more external USB ports of ever variety than you will need, duel NIC, 3x M.2 slots.
-Top M.2 slot is under the GPU slot. So it gets cooled by the GPU fan.
-Includes 2x sata cables, and very nice wifi antenna.
Con:
Only two USB 2 and one USB 3 motherboard headers.
Gigabyte's BIOS is ranked top with MSI's and above Asus and than Asrock's in terms of features and ease of use.
Other Z490 boards have unusual PCIe lane problems that prevent using all SATA 6 GB/s ports but this Pro from Gigabyte and the Ultra manage to do it according to the manual at the expense of one M.2 slot only.
Get this if you are a data hoarder looking to fill up your case with storage, you won't be disappointed and no need to look further!
When you plug-in the M2M middle silver color port. There is not display output. Q code is 00 and 4 red leds at right bottom corner show vga error led is on. Won’t bother to exchange anymore. I will definitely buy Asus next time. too much trouble to use gigabytes products.
I even switch my i7 10700 with my daughter’s i3. It’s still not working.
Firstly initial setup went fairly well, ram (16gb @3600) seated with out issues, cpu (i7 10700k) went in good although the chip slightly slipped in my fingers and i had to quickly save it; luckily none of the pins were damaged so a HUGE sigh of relief when it POST'ed. The m.2 heatsinks are hefty and have a good solid feel to them and i haven't had any of the issues others have had with the m.2 slots. Note; the very top uncovered m.2 slot is not functional and is reserved for when 11th gen cpu's with gen 4 m.2/PCIe support launch so people should be happy that the board has a gen 4 upgrade path without having to replace the board.
Once everything posted and after a bios update (q-flash was very handy) it came time to deal with the only real issue Ive had with the board. Trying to set up both m.2 nvme drives (SN750's) in RAID 0 is not straight forward at all and your gonna have to look up how to do it (involves enabling RST on both drives first in a menu separate from ez raid, then using ez raid) and gigabyte should try to streamline this process more since nvme's are becoming more mainstream now. Once that issue was solved everything else ran smoothly. The cpu was OC'd a bit and PCH temps rarely went over 55c even in hour long benchmark tests and i was able to get a rock steady 5.0ghz i7 10700k @1.28v (do plan on upping it to 5.1 so ill update this review once those results get in).
Other notes; the RGB on the board its self is minimal but that doesn't really bother me since i have a windowless fractal r6, on that same note i cant comment on gigabytes RGB software either since I don't care much for pretty lights. There are RGB strip headers on the board so you do have that option. Keep all of this in mind if RGB is important to you.
The built in WiFi receiver was a godsend when setting up windows due to the fact the the Ethernet plug is non-functional until you update the drivers (which you cant really do unless windows is installed first) so make sure you have a wifi connection or you will run into some issues and will have to dowload all drivers on a seperate computer/laptop and then install them on the new pc (if it is a fresh build of course).
Using the top covered m.2 slot disables SATA ports 4 & 5 but this is a chipset restriction if I'm not mistaken (who needs more than 4 ports anyway?).
I would comment if there were any issues with any of the PCIe x16 slots but I'm holding out for and RTX 30xx (or big navi if the rumors are true) so ill come back and update once i get my hands on a gpu.
Overall this is a great board if your looking for a minimalist look paired with ample enough features that make this a very competitive Z490 board, especially in the sub $300 range. I would highly recommend especially if RGB isn't your thing.
Not really sure why there are so many "CPU" power ports at the top left, I used what the psu had and it worked fine. I think there are a lot of ports you won't used because it supports so many different countries and versions of things. Well worth the purchase. Running like a champ.
as for the Motherboard is concerned, this mobo has 14 phases 1 phase for GPU, 90 AMP. It has a beefy VRM and this motherboard doesn't break a sweat if you overclock it(the photos speak for itself). Unlike the MSI MEG Unify(which I had prior), the transient response and the extra heatsink due to its ARMOR made this motherboard way better when it comes to efficiency and overclocking.
I highly recommend this to anyone who does NOT want to pay $800 for a high end motherboard but will still have high end features regardless (the only major difference between this and the Aorus Extreme is that the Extreme has 16 phases instead of 14 phases, every thing else is basically the same. 14 phases and 90 AMP is way overkill.
The AUDIO is excellent. I no longer have to plug in my headphones at the back of the monitor(where there's a lot of electrical interference. I can plug it in the front and i still get 192,000 32 bit music, i also have access to its AMPLIFIER (front panel) which can have up to 3 levels(it's fantastic and fun, i use my sennehiser HD599 and my god, the front panel audio is excellent. It uses the ES9118 DAC which is among the better motherboard DACs out there.
The internet issues were non existent. I was able to plug in my internet and it worked right away. I'm guessing in the early days of when this motherboard came out, people had problems. I got this in late september and i had no issues with the internet.
My one complaint is that I bought this board specifically to utilize my existing Apple Thunderbolt Display but it doesn’t appear to be compatible with Thunderbolt 2 (even with the appropriate adapter).
The feature set is nice with plenty of USB ports and built-in wifi. I don't recall reading this anywhere in Gigabyte's specifications, but the included wifi antenna has a magnetic base. This is a nice touch and keeps the antenna in place on top of my case until I find a better home for it!
Pros:
• Classic board layout, makes building easy
• Built-in wifi
• Low VRM temps with unlocked processors - tested with my own chip, and video reviews with i7 and i9 show the same
• Smart Fan 5 makes it easy to manage your fans and their curves
Cons:
• Initially, the board didn't recognize the installed GPU, an RTX 2070. It was as if the card wasn't even there. My motherboard came with BIOS revision F2 and upgrading to F4 did the trick. Upgrading was easy with the Gigabyte @BIOS utility. That being said, it seems rather silly that a motherboard wouldn't recognize a graphics card.
• The extreme top of the I/O ports has a little bit of play - it noticeably moves when trying to insert a USB cable.
Other thoughts:
This was my second build with a Gigabyte board and I would certainly recommend it to other users. Setup was easy and fast. Its got all the right features for someone looking to build a capable gaming machine. There is even a subdued, pale orange glow from the AORUS logo on the board.
Update: Gigabyte listened and added CFG Lock option with BIOS F5d update. Cool! Thank you very much guys, Gigabyte is the best!
That's a great motherboard!
I am also enjoying the Gigabyte apps, including the BIOS app which makes updating the BIOS firmware incredibly easy.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I definitely recommend this motherboard.
this company does not provide any service after sales. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM AND WILL NEVER BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AGAIN.
1 offset and High LLC. Similarly, I came from a Z170 build with (2) 8gb Corsair 3000/C15 sticks that I bought in 2016; I ended up buying another pair during this build — zero compatibility issues mixing for 32gb.
Supposedly can accommodate 11th Gen/Rocket Lake along with PCIe4. I tend to keep builds for 3 years, so, at least I’ll have *some* flexibility in the future.
Great board; would recommend...
Had some issues with M2 slot though. Seems the board is picky when it comes to certain M2 drives. Possibly an incompatibility with different M2 firmwares.
no nvme m.2 slot on it and so on..
may like to get something better for the $
drivers software ..is not optimal
after talking to costumer service they sent me a new one after 3 days so its not the product but its amazon
Product : The product was in perfect condition as I thought that heavy rains could have affected the packaging. It is brand new product with manufacturing date of July 2020.
Performance : As I tested this motherboard GIGABYTE Aorus Pro AX,there was not a single flaw that I could come up with.I tested it day and night for stability without overclocking my Intel Core i7-10700k.Everything works perfectly. This is my first Gigabyte motherboard, previously I owned an Asus X99 Deluxe 2,which was not a great choice.Gigabyte BIOS is superb and is very stable in contrast to my X99.Without OC I hit 4.80 GHz easy.My RAM has XMP 2.0 but I tested everything without OC.As for OC I need very good and new AIO liquid cooler because my CM Nepton 240M is already 5 Years old.The load time is 7.4 secs only.Motherboard is very durable and heat dissipation is good. But according to me X99 had better onboard Audio Chip.Even running Intel processor diagnostic tool, which generally is a preferred software for Intel processor health status software, the temps were almost to 70°C only. The capacitor quality is good.I did not like the SATA cables that came in the box with this motherboard. Also the Pin headers are reverse of what you can find on an ASUS board.RGB is not too much and not gimmicky like nowadays people look for in products.I think RGB in any PC component is "GARBAGE" addition.I am running a ASUS GTX 960 4GB OC GPU on this mobo.Games like - GTA V on High settings and V Sync(on) on 1080p,run at 60 FPS solid
Watchdogs 2 - High settings - Vsync(off) - 55 to 69 FPS
Sid Meiers Civilization 6 - High Settings - 60 FPS stable
CSGO on 1080p everything maxed out settings run - 180-200 FPS .(for CSGO I need a good GPU now LOL)
Verdict : I will definitely suggest this motherboard if you want to upgrade to Z490 platform. But if you want i9-10900k maybe buy AORUS MASTER,because the higher is your chip quality the higher quality mobo you want go buy for it.This AORUS PRO AX can handle any 10th gen chip great as well.It has got WiFi 6 too. There is no need to OC your chip unless you have a good electricity coverage in your area without any power outages. If on OC and power goes out, your PC suffers hard.
