Before going into detail about the WF-7010, its worth talking about why I didn't buy a Canon or HP. My HP photo printer (home use) has great Linux support (including the nice user interface panel, like you'd see in Windows) and is a solid printer. A HP wide body (Super B) printer I used in my most recent job was also great, but.... The ink was encoded with an expiration date and could not be used once expired. I threw away unopened cartridges because I couldn't use them quickly enough. This was a show stopper for my home business. The Canon is also a solid printer but has no US based Linux support. If you look hard enough some drivers are on Canon's European and Asian websites; but it is not a trivial task to find / install them.

The Epson didn't have the two major faults of HP and Canon (expiring ink and no Linux support). It also has an integrated duplexer (automatically prints double-sided documents), two paper cassettes (I use one for letter size and one for 11X17 sheets), and can be connected to a network via its Ethernet connection. The printer's features rate a 10 out of 10. They really nailed this. Controls are easy to use/reach. The paper cassettes expand for larger paper sizes and retract for smaller ones (reducing the footprint of the printer slightly for smaller paper sizes). The Windows support is excellent. Epson supplies an advanced user interface to setup all the parameters of the printer, controls that go beyond the normal "fast / best" print quality settings. You can tell the printer what size paper is in which cassette (so it will automatically select the correct paper when you print). It also lets you select which edge of the paper will be bound (for duplex printing). I haven't used this feature yet, but it appears to leave a slightly larger margin on the edge that will be used to attach the document (the edge that will have holes punched for a three ring binder).

The ONLY reason I didn't rate the WF-7010 a perfect score is the barely adequate Linux driver. Running Linux Mint, some applications print with no problem, others do not. The printer driver does not have native support for 11X17 or 13X19 page sizes (which is really bizarre considering this is a wide carriage printer). Without this in the print driver, it is up to individual applications to tell the printer that it needs to use the large format paper size. LibreOffice (the Linux equivalent of MS Office) works fine. KiCad (an engineering circuit design software) does not (in Linux, the Windows version of KiCad prints fine as the Windows driver inherently supports these page sizes). There is probably a way to work around these driver issues, but time is money and figuring out these fixes is not what I need to be spending time / money to resolve. My simple, yet effective workaround, is to print documents from my sole Windows machine after doing all of the leg work in Linux. For paper, it is probably worth the money (and effort) to spring for a decent grade paper (especially with the larger format sheets). I bought some very inexpensive 11X17 paper that is really thin and prone to jamming (printer tries to pick up multiple pages).

All in all, I'd buy the WF-7010 and recommend it to others. Setting up the printer on a network (must be hardwired, does not have wifi built in) is very easy and painless. If you are only running Windows (or have a mix of Windows & Linux), you should be fine. If you are only running Linux they I would recommend you have enough technical knowledge to work through the quirks in the Linux driver. It may also be possible to use the Windows driver in Linux via the Windows wrapper function. I haven't tried this, but this workaround has been used routinely for other hardware with limited (or no) Linux support.

I sometimes telecommute from my engineering job, and when at home I often do CAD (computer aided drafting) for making, reviewing and updating engineering drawings. I also have a small micro-publishing business for sheet music. Both of these make the ability to print on wide format paper desirable. By wide format, I am referring to paper larger than normal 'Letter (8.5" x 11")', 'legal', or similarly sized European paper standards. The most common for me is 11" x 17", often called 'planograph' size.

Printers that can operate with these paper sizes tend to be professional models that are large, heavy, and very expensive ($2000 and above).

I used to own a used HP Laserjet 5100, which did the 11x17 paper, was fast, but did not have duplexing (double-sided) capabilities built-in (i.e. manual duplexing only). My biggest problem was space...it was so large and heavy that I had no space for it on a day-to-day basis, but it was so difficult to move to a storage area when not in use. Also, it got old and cranky after half a million prints, and toner got expensive. A lot of expense and bother for a printer that would be used occasionally.

After scoping around, I decided that my next wide format printer would be an inkjet type instead of a laser. Epson seemed to have the best machines of this type, at least in an affordable price range of less than $200 street price. A friend had an older Epson wide format in his factory and was quite happy with it. And I was a satisfied owner of an Epson Workforce 40 injet printer (see my Amazon review of that one too), so I thought highly of the Workforce series.

The WF-7010 is Epson's stand-alone wide format injet printer. It is intended for small offices, and is equipped with Ethernet 10/100 and high speed USB 2.0 connectivity. Since Epson apparently feels that WiFi is not commonly used in offices, where they prefer wired connections for security and other reasons, this printer does not have wireless connectivity. It is a large printer at about 22" wide x 16" deep x 10" tall, but it is fairly light weight at about 25 pounds; it is light enough to be easily carried from place to place if desired, and would not overwhelm a light-duty shelf or small table. It does not shake a lot when in operation, so table sturdiness should not be an issue. Depending on the paper sized used, the printer's front-to-rear depth can grow to accommodate the extra paper lengths.

The WF-7010 comes with two paper trays; according to some older reviews, the trays cannot both accept the same sized paper, but on mine both trays are identical and can accept any allowed paper size. I have tray 2 (the lower tray) set up for 11x17 paper, and this makes the printer's total front-to-rear depth about 22.5". Tray 1 (the top tray) is set up for 8.5 x 11 paper and in this configuration it fits flush into the printer and does not add to the overall depth. The paper exit tray pulls out of the front of the printer and telescopes to a maximum that makes the overall printer depth about 27"; if you are not using the largest paper sizes, you don't need to telescope the exit tray so far out. Each paper tray has a retracted mode and an extended mode. For sizes up to 'legal', the trays can remain in retracted mode. For larger size papers, you press a button inside the tray and this allows it to telescope into a larger tray. It clicks into a detent so that it is locked in the larger tray size until the button is pressed again to allow it to retract into the smaller tray size.

The trays are all-plastic, but are adequately strong and they can hold up to half of a ream of paper each (250 sheets), for a total paper capacity of 500 sheets. Each tray has internal sliding partitions to keep the paper centered in the correct position. Both trays have a removable gray-tinted plastic dust cover; these are not much use when the trays are in their retracted mode (where they fit fully inside the printer), but they are nice when the trays are in their extended mode where they partly extend outside the printer. Note that, unlike many laser printers with extended sized paper trays, the extended WF-7010 trays protrude from the front of the printer instead of the rear.

The WF-7010 has limited duplexing (automatic double-sided printing) capability. When printing to 'normal' sizes, and to regular paper as opposed to envelopes and such, it is fully auto-duplexing; it prints on one side, automatically pulls the paper back in and flips it, prints the other size and ejects it, then repeats for the next sheet. For larger papers, such as 11x17, I noticed an oddity. When I first got the printer, it allowed me to select duplex for even the larger papers, but it would print all the odd numbered pages normally, then instruct me to move the printed sheets from the exit tray to the paper tray and press a 'resume' button on the computer screen, and then it would proceed to print the secon

I own an HP PSC 1510 All-In-One Printer-Scanner-Copier (HP Psc 1510 All-in-one Printer); it has been installed and connected to my HP Pavilion a6207c desktop PC. I never upgraded the HP PSC because it was adequate for my purposes. Mostly, I used it to scan in photographs, newspaper articles, and instructions printed on boxes. In order to save money, many companies don't print instruction manuals. Instead, they expect the owner to keep the cardboard boxes on which the instructions are printed. I normally tear apart the box, flatten the sides and use my HP PSC to scan the instructions into my HP Pavilion PC. From the HP Pavilion PC, they are transferred to my FreeAgent Go Flex portable hard drive. Thus I have a permanently stored electronic copy of my instructions.

I am able to print photographs downloaded to my computer using my HP PSC, but the printing process is laborious and it takes a long time for the ink on the glossy paper to dry. Fortunately, this is not the case with my Epson WorkForce WF-7010 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CB59201). The photographs are printed at twice the speed and I don't have to wait overnight for the ink to dry. I can touch them immediately. Most importantly, photographs that I have printed using my Epson WorkForce Printer are of a higher quality than the ones I were having developed at a local drugstore. I won't mention which one but they are part of a nationwide chain, located practically on every street corner. (Perhaps their ink and paper are of a poor quality.) I have downloaded onto this website a photograph of my youngest nephew; it is a comparison of the same photograph printed on my Epson WorkForce Printer and also developed at the drugstore. As one can see from the comparison, the photograph printed on my Epson WorkForce Printer is much brighter and shows more detail; the photograph developed at the local drugstore is too dark.

The Epson WorkForce Printer is probably best suited for a professional office environment rather than for a home office. First of it, it requires a lot of operating space. This printer measures 22.0" Long X 16.3" Wide X 10.4" Tall. Also, I hope the owner has a strong back because it weighs nearly thirty pounds and I felt every pound of it carrying it up my steep staircase. I didn't want to disconnect my HP PSC from my HP Pavilion PC because I use the scanner more than anything else. Therefore, I also physically connected my Epson WorkForce Printer to my desktop PC; however, the program has been downloaded on both my desktop and laptop PCs. Installation on my HP Pavilion PC was relatively easy, taking approximately thirty to forty-five minutes. I didn't have any serious problems. Sometimes the PC wouldn't recognize the printer in a step and I would simply have to re-perform the step until it did.

I like to put an entire ream of paper, 500 sheets, within both drawers of my Epson WorkForce Printer. I can buy a ream from the local office supply store and load it all without having to store leftover paper and worry about it getting wrinkled. With my HP PSC, I could only put twenty to thirty sheets in the tray. If I put more than that, I ran the risk of paper jams. The Epson WorkForce Printer is relatively quiet when it operates. Furthermore, someone who prints a lot of photographs can always keep glossy paper in the top drawer and select this drawer when printing photographs.

With the Epson WorkForce Printer, I can print double sided, saving me money. Most importantly, it gives my work a more professional appearance. For example, I enjoy writing horror short stories. (I've actually published a few in small magazines.) I can print them double-sided on my Epson WorkForce Printer and bind them using my Fellowes Galaxy E Comb Binding Machine (5218301). I then give the short stories to my "fans," consisting primarily of family and friends, to read. Thus, my short stories have a more professional appearance. Being able to print double sided is a must when printing one's resume. I'll definitely need to do this when Reduction in Force (RIF) notices begin circulating at the government shipyard where I work.

My HP PSC uses only two print cartridges: black and color. However, it literally eats them up. It seems that I am constantly having to replace them, even when I don't do much printing. They dry up just sitting there. The Epson WorkForce Printer has four cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Ink levels are always shown when a document or photograph is being printed. Therefore, when one color is low, only one color cartridge will need to be bought instead of having to buy all the colors in one, more expensive cartridge.

However, what I like the most about the Epson WorkForce WF-7010 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CB59201) is that not only does it have a one-year limited warranty but there is a toll free number the owner

PROS -- fast on text documents, will print up to 13 x 19 inches (approx 33 x 48 cm), two paper drawers & large ink cartridges, two sided printing
CONS -- photo printing not great, no wireless connection, nozzles susceptible to clogging, setup snags, no cord included, no PictBridge interface.
SUMMARY -- it does what it says, but consider other models also.

This is a basic stripped-down printer (no wifi, no scanner, no USB cord, etc.) that has the advantage of being able to print on large paper. This makes it easy to print off a poster about something, a large map to put on a wall, personalized gift-wrap, a large page which is folded to make a custom letter-sized folder, etc. However, if you need a large format printer, there are others in this price range to consider (from both Epson and others) which provide more features and/or better quality photo printing.

It prints text documents fairly quickly, however, it prints photos rather slowly.

If you want a quality photo printer, this is not the printer for you. When I printed the same photo on my years-old HP printer and this, the Epson photo had weaker colors, and fuzzier edges and lines, and slightly different (worse) color balance, no matter what paper was used (I tried premium papers from both Epson and HP). At a glance, my not-too-discerning partner immediately noticed the difference between the photos printed on the two printers.

The "DuraBrite Ultra" ink that this printer uses is their basic general purpose ink (it is not one of the special inks for artistic applications -- search for "Epson Ink Solutions" if you want to know more.)

>> Documentation:

The behavior of the printer setup didn't match the documentation (I am using Mac 10.6.8). After installing the ink cartridges, it was supposed to begin the priming process, but after about 15 minutes (during which I was prowling through the software and documentation) I checked the status, and it said that the cartridge types were not recognized. That was fixed by turning the printer off and then back on. Again, when printing the first test page, it hung (with a communication error), again remedied by a power cycle.

There were other important things lacking (or mismatching) in the documentation:
- Apparently small-sized papers go only in the top drawer, according to the marks in the drawer itself, and the software size options for drawer 1 versus drawer 2.
- The printed instructions said to shake the cartridges, tear open the plastic, and install the cartridges. Hmmm, there are some little yellow plastic strips which say to remove them, the instructions don't mention them, but I guess I should. Then later the online documentation said not to remove anything or ink would leak. Huh, which is it? (It seems to be working fine, with the strips removed as they themselves said to do).

And, there are a bunch of important things buried in the bottom of the the outline structure of the documentation. Things like how to set the paper size in the two drawers, how to turn on or off paper-size mismatch checking, etc.

SECRETS OF PRINTING IN BLACK: One of the really important things to know about this printer is how to force it to keep printing in black, even if you run out of a color: bring up the guide and search for the "Expended Color" for details. Otherwise, once you have run out of any ink color, all printing is disabled.

>> Concern About Nozzles:

I have avoided Epson printers for years, because of prior bad experience with constantly clogging nozzles. With Epson printers, you don't get a new print head with each ink cartridge replacement - while this is cheaper in the short run, it can cause problems in the long run. In the past, I would have to constantly run nozzle checks, have to waste ink "cleaning" them, and have to resort to alcohol on a q-tip because Epson's own print head cleaning procedures were not adequate. ETA 2/2014: Overall, the nozzle situation is much improved, but it still merits consideration.

Basically, before printing anything, you should run a nozzle check to make sure none of them are clogged. Every time. Sure enough, with this brand-new out of the box printer, a nozzle was clogged. Often this will fix itself with another nozzle check, but it did not, so I had to waste ink by running the nozzle clean procedure which did fix it. But then later in the same day, before printing another photo, again a nozzle check showed another clogged nozzle, but this time, a second nozzle check fixed it. It remains to be seen whether this current printer will have constant nozzle problems, or whether Epson's priming and cleaning procedures have been improved over time.

ETA 2/2014: After six+ months of disuse, when I needed to print on large paper, only a few nozzles were clogged -- not surprising after that amount of disuse. It n

I bought this as a general office printer and to do small print runs for handmade books and pamphlets. Thus the varied size is very useful and you can print a book jacket. However it will only print duplex (i.e. print on both sides flipping the paper itself) automatically using letter size (8.5" x 11") . This was after much frustration trying to print a small book. The manual says can print duplex by manually taking the paper off the printer and feeding it back in upside down by hand. Well - duh - thanks Epson for providing that great feature of me standing by the printer manually feeding paper by hand - I can do that on just about any printer.

And even when printing on letter paper in full duplex you have to watch it like a hawk as often feeds more than one page at a time so that can mess up a print run.

The large paper ability also means that it is a large printer - check the dimensions and your desk space.

I also find that it uses up the color cartridge even if you only print in B&W - they say that is to lubricate the printhead. Admittedly a small amount but it means you use up expensive color ink even if you are not printing in it - and it will not let you print at all if your color cartridge is missing or empty. You are forced to buy color ink.

Not a bad printer for a large format print. But has quirks and frustrations. If there is another similarly featured at a good price I might advise avoiding this.

Великолепно

Contents: Printer, AC Cord, Ink (Magenta, Cyan, Yellow, Black) - the 127 cartridges which have extra-high capacity as opposed to the 126 cartridges which are also compatible, Software disc, brief printed instructions, and Presentation Paper Samples

Test Bed: Mac Pro 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running 10.6.8 (note that Epson does have Lion-compatible software available at their website)

Unpacking went smoothly thanks to notations at the top of the box indicating where to hold the printer as you remove it. The usual tape, plastic, and styrofoam was removed. The four ink carts were easily and quickly installed, following which the printer was supposed to go through its initial priming procedure. But nothing happened. It just sat there. I waited five minutes and the green light was continuing to flash, indicating that priming had not taken place. I correctly speculated that the little ink button on the front panel would need to be depressed to start the priming process, and while that is not in the instruction pamphlet ("Start Here"), it worked and the priming operation began.

There are two paper cassettes. They can hold letter, legal, A3, or A4 size paper. (A typo on the instruction pamphlet indicates that only A4 paper is possible rather than A3 and A4). I loaded some plain paper of larger-than-usual size (11x17) and hooked up my USB cable. The printer will also allow an ethernet connection, though I chose to use the USB instead. I was immediately asked whether I wished to download the appropriate Epson printer software which was then installed without any need to reboot. I then printed several items - a multi-color page from the web and a photo from iPhoto. Paper handling worked smoothly and the printer is quiet enough to be used within a home environment as well as the intended office setting. The photograph looked remarkably good considering that we have only three colors of ink available and that I was printing on plain rather than photographic paper. Some banding that you wouldn't notice on a photographic printer was noticeable here at close range, particularly in large monotonal areas such as the sky. Resolution, of course, also isn't what you would expect from a photographic printer. Hold the photo at arm's length, however, and even at the 11x17 size, the photo looks remarkably good. I'm sure it's not the intent of Epson, but this makes a wonderful proofing printer for larger size photos.

I inserted the product disc and since the software had already been automatically installed by Apple, I installed the User's Guide. This led me to the interactive web-based guide that included a head alignment process instructional. A few rapid corrections there and the banding noted above disappeared. Now go with the presentation paper and further improvement takes place. Clearly this is preferable to the standard office-issue copy paper that I had been using.

The overall unit is a little smaller than you might expect given that it handles paper up to 13x19" paper. Both paper trays extend from the unit when they hold paper larger than standard; a plastic cover protects the paper from airborne dust. Up to 500 sheets of paper can be divided between the two paper trays. I found the paper trays to be well-built without the difficulty that I sometimes have adjusting trays to fit various size paper. Epson is generally better than HP on this count, and this particular printer is better than even Epson's standard. Printing is quick and two-sided printing or black-only printing (if you've run out of color ink and don't care) can be easily set up. You can't print the full owner's manual, so we're counting on Epson to keep the online manual available for many years to come. This particular printer does not have wi-fi capabilities. I've gotten to the point where I expect nearly everything to be wi-fi capable, but we're not quite there with printers, particularly at this price point.

It's nice to have a large format printer, and to have one at under $200 with sufficient resolution to handle any desired presentation is a bonus. I got one of the early release units and my assumption is that Epson will quickly modify their instruction sheets to correct the ink installation nit I picked above. Five stars for a very impressive under-$200 wide format printer.

I bought this because Epson FAQ question #7 for the WF-7010 said that it supports AirPrint. It does NOT! (Or email print either!)

It's a nice printer and I thought it would be perfect for my needs, except that there's no way to directly print to it from an iPhone or iPad. That equals FAIL!

What's worse is that their website tells customers that it is AirPrint compatible. Check the 7010 FAQ page:

-------------------------------------
Epson WorkForce WF-7010 Inkjet Printer

Q: Can I use Apple AirPrint to print with my product?

A: Yes. See the Apple AirPrint Support page for more information.

Published: August 21, 2012

-------------------------------------

Now I have to waste time sending this thing back and buying a larger, much more expensive printer with lots of features I do NOT need just to get the single feature that I do need!

I have two other Epson printers too. They are good printers, but none support AirPrint. Very poor product feature decisions from Epson Marketing!

Dan.

p.s. In the customer pictures above, I added a screen shot of the AirPrint statement on the Epson FAQ page.

---------------------------------
Followup April 6, 2013

Epson technical support responded this morning reiterating what I already knew - that the 7010 does NOT support AirPrint. Unfortunately they did not respond to the primary issue - falsely claiming in their FAQ that the printer supported AirPrint. Instead they pointed me to their list of printers that supported AirPrint.

And what does the FAQ say now? Here's the rub... Instead of correcting the FAQ, it appears that they deleted it completely. As of 8:20 am PDT, Googling "epson wf-7010 airprint faq" (without the quotes) returns a list of invalid links. Some show blank pages. Some show kind of error. And one shows the NEW list of top FAQ's for the printer. Now question 7 is about ink cartridges. History restated.

As a warning to other potential buyers, I'm leaving this review and the pic above about it's lack of AirPrint support.

FYI... I still like Epson printers enough that I just ordered an Epson 7520 - which DOES support AirPrint. The downside is that it costs 50% more than the 7010, and is twice the height and bulk. And the 7520 has a lot of features that are useless to me (like faxing). One thing I liked about the 7010 was the simple, well-designed user interface with 5 buttons. The 7520 has something like 20 buttons and an LCD panel with many more options - way overcomplicated for my needs. To keep it simple, I'll probably put black tape over the useless features or just suffer with them. OTOH, it DOES support AirPrint. I guess you have to take the good with the bad in any product or company.

I purchased this printer from Amazon. It arrived without the setup instructions, CD or paper samples. I looked up the instructions on the Epson website and followed them.

Step 1 says to "Remove all tape and protective materials, including the foam and plastic inside the printer." There was no "foam and plastic inside the printer".

Step 3 says "The printer starts priming the ink. This takes about 5 minutes. When the green power light stops flashing, priming is complete." The printer just sat there and did nothing except the power light flashed. I removed and reseated the ink cartridges twice. After several hours I turned off the power and then turned it back on. It still just sat there doing nothing but flash the power light.

In the AM I called Amazon and they sent me a new printer overnight. I packed and returned the dead printer.

The new printer did exactly the same thing. After 10 minutes I called Epson. They had me remove and reseat the ink cartridges. No change. They had me turn the printer off and then back on. No change. they had me turn the printer off and then back on a second time, and this time the priming process started.

They then had me load paper, turn the power off, hold down the ink button and while that was held down also hold down the power button and wait until the power light started flashing. This was supposed to print a test page. Nothing happened. They had me repeat this process. The third time I tried this the printer started doing something but after a couple of minutes nothing had printed. They had me remove the paper tray and check for jams. No jams. Tried again. Nothing printed. They had me remove the paper and fan it and put it back in the tray. This time it printed a test page. I agreed it appeared to be working and got off the phone.

I installed the software, and printed a test page from my computer when done. It took several minutes before the test page started to print, but then it only took a few seconds to print.

The printed instructions said this printer would work with an iPad. Since my wife had an iPad and no way to print from it I installed the (fortunately free) software and tried it. To make a long story short, the printed manual was wrong. The WF-7010 is not compatible with Epson's iOS printing software. The twice as expensive WF-7520 all-in-one is.

I loaded 11x17 paper into tray 2, and printed an AutoCAD drawing in color. Printing went fairly fast, but the fine details were lost on some of the lighter colors. I then printed again but set for B&W at the highest print quality. The resulting print had great detail. I had to pull out a magnifying glass to see the finest details, but they had all printed fine. Since printing drawings was one of the main reasons I purchased this printer this made me happy.

I then tried printing a color photo in normal quality mode on 8.5x11 plain paper and it looked decent. I did not buy this as a photo printer so I was happy with the results.

Overall I am very happy with Amazon's support, but less than happy with Epson's documentation, the first dead printer, and the effort it took to get the printer working. That is why only 3 stars.

The quick-print black on this printer kicks out like nobody's business, but when I use glossy Kodak photo paper and set it to high quality, it provides exactly that. From black text to a nice, quality photo, it's been working out great.

I have it set up as a network printer, which it does very well at. The drivers and software are easy to load and effortless.

This is a VERY large printer, which may be a drawback for some but doesn't affect me negatively.

The downside is when the printer is busy, which isn't very often. Specifically, after loading a new ink cartridge. It spends when feels like several minutes going through some sort of diagnostic/priming mode which ties up the printer for a little while. It's not a great amount of time, but for some reason feels unnecessarily long for the action.

The Epson WorkForce WF-7010 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer has performed quite well for me over the past month and I wanted to share my thoughts about it with you in this review.

Pros:
-Works with many common computers and netbooks
-Print on both sides of your paper with built-in duplex
-Ethernet networking

Cons:
- The Epson WorkForce WF-7520 All-in-One offers so much more!
- Wish it had a display and memory card reader

For those of us who choose to buy their electronics online, I would like to note that Amazon did a superb job of shipping this printer to me. The USB printer arrived in a large cardboard box and inside I found the retail box with no blemishes or scratches on it. Epson put the printer itself in plenty of protective packaging to ensure it would be ready to use as soon as you open it.

The Epson Workforce WF-7010 works with Macintosh, Linux and Microsoft Windows computers. To offer you some help in buying this product, I personally tested it on several computers around my computers at home. With a Windows XP 32bit computer, I had to use the drivers on the supplied CD-ROM to install the USB printer. Luckily, my Windows 7 32bit and 64bit systems required no such effort and I only had to wait while the files were installed by the integrated update utility. I had an equally easy time when installing this printer on my computers while it was connected to my home Ethernet network.

How To Get The Highest Quality Detail From The Epson WF-7010 Printer!
Printing high quality digital photos requires careful attention to three areas: computer, paper and image resolution. To maximize your printing speed, I highly recommend using a computer with the equivalent power of a dual core processor and at least 1Gb of RAM. To get the best possible detail out of your photos, you will want to use glossy or matte finish paper that is designed for use with inkjet printers. Finally the digital photo that you print should be at least 1280x1024 or larger resolution to get the greatest amount of detail. The WF-7010 can print massive 13" x 19" portraits but you must give the machine a high quality photo to get that stunning detail first!

Epson Workforce WF-7010 Wide-Format Performance Testing
To test the detail obtainable from this printer and to compare it to other options on the market today, I picked a digital photo that had as many colors as possible. The photo showed my German Sheherd jumping into a pool after a red Jolly Ball causing a shower of water to be suspended in mid air.

Printing my IRS tax forms in duplex was nice as well this year. The Epson WF-7010 powered through them at close to laser duplex speeds with flawless black and white contrast. You can deselect the duplex print option within Windows 7 at the time the printer dialog appears. Keep this in mind if you are printing multiple color photos, I made the mistake but it was not the printer's fault.

In conclusion, the Epson Workforce WF-7010 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer did everything that I expected it too. The only major problem for me was finding 13" x 19" photo paper but once I did, the results were stunning! You will enjoy this printer but please know that the Epson WorkForce WF-7520 All-in-One offers so much more! The printer has a memory card reader and offers an integrated LCD display. For a minor increase in price, you get scanning and fax capabilities that may entice any home office user.

This massive printer performs as expected (Do not be alarmed by the size of the box, while it is indeed larger than your average printer, once out of the box you will notice it is not as large as the box and the weight suggests), it is quieter compared to other similar models, colors are accurate, printing times are fast and overall provides a good service. How can someone determine if this is the printer you need to buy?

For starters, this is a wide-format printer, so if you do not need to print anything over the standard sizes and under, this may not be for you. However, those who work in areas that may require larger printouts (architects or designers for example), will find this printer to be what may be needed and more. The selling point of this model is that it can deliver professional prints up to 13" x 19". In my case, I work all the time at home in projects for my kid's school and will help my wife creating and designing invitations and other graphic design related things. This printer not only help us avoid having to go to an office depot or similar stores for printouts but also provides good looking prints! Comparing this printer to other similar models or printers oriented for wide format prints, the selling price does not look bad at all, for a printer that is cheaper when compared to those, the quality of the printouts is pretty good and not of a lesser quality as we may have expected.

Setting this up was quite easy by simply following the instructions once plugged, important to note, a USB or Ethernet cable for the printer is not included in the box. Though this is the norm (which still surprises me) I think it may be worth mentioning just in case. This is in my opinion, the only weak point of this printer, while performance and results have not been an issue so far, the fact that this is not a wireless model kind of works against it. We have a smaller wireless printer at home and we got used to it, so having to manually plug the computer to the WF-7010 may be a pain if you do not have enough room for both the printer and a laptop/desktop. Fortunately for us, we do not use it as often, but I can see how that could be a problem for someone else. I read in another review that here may be a way to plug the printer to a router and the connect to your computers via wireless, I may need to try that and see if it works.

While the required cable may not be included, the box does contain 4 ultra ink cartridges so you can start using this out of the box (well, once you get the cable), a sample pack of paper is also included.

Bottom line, I cannot think of anything I do not like about this printer other than the lack of wireless features. For someone working as a designer I can see how it would be helpful to have one of these around, add to that a 5 year old with all kinds of homework from school and this should be a no brainer.

Based on results and performance I can definitely recommend this!

My new Epson Workforce WF-7010 has a lot of competition. I own quite a few printers that I use every day, including an Epson Stylus NX-530 and an Epson Workforce 630 and a Brother MFC-420CN. My thoughts on how it compares:

SETUP

The Workforce WF-7010 was very easy to set up on my Windows Vista Home Premium system. I inserted the CD to install, connected the power cable, USB cable, and ethernet cable, and I was done. I did not have any problems with the computer recognizing my new printer.

Yes, if you want to network this printer, it requires an ethernet cable. It cannot network via Wi-Fi.

The paper tray must be expanded, if you want to use larger sheets of paper. There are two paper trays, which is great. If you use two different sizes of paper on a regular basis, there is no need to constantly swap out the paper. Obviously, a large format printer will have a bigger footprint than a regular printer. There is just no way around that. With the expanded paper tray, it's a BIG footprint.

PRINTING

I spent the day printing photos for my daughter's school project. It prints quickly. The photos are sharp, the ink doesn't smear. It is quick drying, although slightly tacky when taken immediately out of the printer.

I also printed a photo on 11" x 17" paper. The software has a default option of edge smoothing. It was plain paper, not photo paper. I don't usually expect the best results on plain paper, but the result was breathtaking.

I also printed text with graphics pages and they looked very professional. I wouldn't hesitate to use this for brochures.

This printer has automatic double-sided printing, which is wonderful. Especially with wide-format printing, I can now print folded books. The fact that it's automatic means I save time. I also save on paper. To use this feature, you must manually select the paper tray you want to use. It will not work if left to automatically select the paper tray.

One thing I did not like is the lack of digital display. We are back to blinking LED lights, which requires us to keep the printer pamphlet around just in case it starts blinking and we need to translate. I prefer my printers talk to me, or at least display to me. I don't want to need a translator.

MANUAL

I do wish it came with a dead tree manual. The help menu on the printer software is not very helpful and I don't want to have to go online to search for a manual. I still don't know what multi-page 2-up and 4-up means, so I don't use it.

PROS:
+ beautiful photos, graphics and text
+ prints quickly
+ automatic double-sided printing
+ quick drying ink does not smudge
+ connect to network via ethernet cable
+ large paper tray, for paper up to 13" wide and 19" long
+ 2 paper trays

CONS:
- no printed manual and help menu in software is sorely lacking
- no digital display
- no fax
- no wireless network capability (requires ethernet cable to connect to network)
- no scanning
- large footprint

SUMMARY:

This Workforce WF-7010 is a workhorse of a printer. If you need a basic printer that will print in wide format, this is the one for you. It is not a multifunction printer. It will not fax, copy or scan. It prints, and it does it well.

When I first attempted to set this printer up, I had trouble installing the print cartridges. I followed the instructions very carefully. The printer was supposed to prime the ink for I believe about 20 seconds. Mine went into an endless cycle it would not come out of. After perhaps 30 minutes, I powered it off, and on. The carriage had retreated to the far right under the housing, from where the cartridges could not be accessed, and would not move out.

I called customer service. I was on hold a long, long time. When I got help, tey were reading (badly) from some sort of Q&A script. After (very, very slowly) taking down my information, they tried to walk me through trouble-shooting. Their script did not seem to allow for the fact that I had not yet installed the software, so the agent had to set the phone down for every question, while I listened to him talking to someone else for perhaps five minutes per question. They asked me to turn it off and on. They then asked me to remove the cartridges, even though I had told them I could not. It went on like this, painfully, slowly, until I was out of time to spend not being helped, and had to go.

The next day, on my own, I unplugged it and repowered it several times. Finally, for no apparent reason, it finally printed a test page successfully.

Since then, I would say that this printer performs poorly to fair for general printing. I bought it specifically because I often need to print on 11x17 paper and other sizes. It appeared to be a good replacement for my HP9800 inkjet that recently expired.

Printing on 11x17 Paper: The paper does not fit in the paper trays. Really. They are not long enough. You can cheat this size into the bottom tray by letting it stick out through the crack when the tray is closed, but you cannot load many sheets this way. There is no way to load 11x17 paper into the top tray. Even so, the printer will always assume by default that you want the top tray, no matter what size media you select.

General printing: A crap shoot every time. There will almost always be some sort of error that needs to be managed. The lights on the top of the printer are close to useless. They blink when there is a problem, and grant no more information than that. The popup messages on the computer are slightly more helpful at times.

The paper trays have light, plastic lids that fall off if you look at them. They do not click or latch on; they just sort of sit there. If they shift a bit, they fall off.

I should have bought another HP9800. It lived a shorter life than it should have, but it never frustrated me like this thing.

I regret this purchase.

Pros: Prints wide-formats (Up to 13x19) in color. Has seperate color catridges, You can change a single color cartridge as needed. Can also use Epson High-capacity cartidges for more printing before running out of ink. I would recommend using the High-capacity Black catridge, as this gets the most use. Has 2 paper cassettes for printing on different size paper without changing paper all of the time. I use 8 1/2 x 11 in the upper one and 11 x 17 in lower one. Prints on both sides of the paper. This really helps when printing reports/documents that are large and saves paper too. Good quality on printing graphics in both black & white and color including color fills. I have not tried to print any pictures yet. The software allows you to adjust quality, single/double sided printing and time-delay for heavy graphics double-sided and a bunch of other options. Very good Software supporting this printer. I use this printer for Word/PDF documents, Excel spreadsheets and Visio drawings.

Cons: Printer is BIG. You will need some space for this monster, but what do you expect for a printer that can print 13x19 paper? Does not come with the USB 2.0 or network cables. You will need to buy a USB cable with one end a Type A Male and the other end a Type B Male in whatever length is appropriate for you. You will need to go to a Printing supply company for the larger paper sizes as the Office supply stores do not carry much (If any) of the 11x17 or 13x19 paper. I have only had a few minor paper jams when printing double-sided jobs. It occurs when the printer changes the paper around for the other side of the document.

Overall very satisfied with this printer. It is a little pricey at full retail, but I got mine "On Sale" and saved about $50.
I am using this printer connected to a Custom built PC with Windows 7 Pro and the XP add-on window (used for older XP based software). It shares nicely between them, BUT make sure to follow the XP instructions exactly.

I had to rate this one star because it wouldn't let me rate it 0. I bought this 6 months ago and have not got it to print the first page! I have had epson before and was satisfied with those so when I had to replace my work horse, I bought the wf 7010. Biggest mistake this year! I have gone around with support about this. So now I have to box it back up and ship it back or drive it 50 miles to the closest "authorized" repair shop. I understand there is a lemon now and then in manufacturing of any thing mechanical. That's not so much my complaint as my experience with support people at Epson. Does anyone one there speak English? Does anyone there actually know how to listen to a problem and answer questions? No matter what the question, they have a canned answer for it and usually has nothing to do with the question. The problem: error messages telling me the tray is not properly inserted (only one way to insert them), or the paper is out ( have 25 sheets in each tray), or paper jam (none that I can see). So when I call or email support, they tell me to load the paper correctly, insert the tray correctly, and pull out the paper that is jammed! If I could get a refund I would and go with HP, but they won't offer a refund. I'm told to take it to an "authorized" repair shop.

Великолепно

Got this printer to replace a HP Business Ink Jet 2800 ($500 when new) with issues, after about 6 years of use . My main needs are low volume printing (100 to 200 pages per month) , mostly on 11" x 17" for text/charts, and sometimes graphics, with occasional need for color. No current need for printing high resolution photos or duplexing.

I also considered multi-function wide-format machines by Epson, HP, and Brother, but I was concerned about the number of negative reviews and the complexity of these machines. Also, when I went to office supply stores to test them, they often had problems. I already have multi-function black only laser, so I went with the Epson for a dedicated wide-format color ink-jet for a great price ($129).

Needed some help from Epson tech support for the initial priming of the ink. I got through on the phone right away, and the call was only a few minutes.

The Epson build quality seems quite good. The speed of printing my Excel charts 11" x 17", compared to my old HP, is at least twice as fast. The print quality using normal mode is very good. The actual ink yield of pages for the standard black cartridge is about 90% of the claims for me (175 pages, 11" x 17"), but this is for the first cartridge. Changing the ink was easy; I let the black run dry, the printer stopped, and the software prompted me to change the ink cartridge. I probably will use the standard cartridges for the colors, and the XL one for black. With the second input tray holding the 11" x 17" paper, I now do my letters in color from the first input tray. The Windows 7 printer driver has plenty of options.

My only negative comment is when I asked Epson support a question in an email from their web site, I never received a reply.

As usual, this inkjet printer (like all others) sucks ink like a very thirsty elephant at a watering hole. I printed less than (10) 13 x 19 inch designs that were comprised of mostly the magenta side of the spectrum. The magenta cartridge is now bone dry. As a result, the printer won't print at all except for strictly black images until another expensive order of color ink cartridges arrive.

It's no secret that companies like Canon and Epson and so on make insane amounts of cash by selling relatively inexpensive hardware and then gouging us with the cost of the ink required. Having said that, this is a LARGE FORMAT printer used to print large pages. Could you, Epson engineers, not give us a break and reveal a large-scale printer with somewhat larger scale ink cartridges? Please?

Good printed results... no doubt, but it gets only three stars for the greed factor still in practice with desktop printer makers.

As a Mac user, forget the CD included. It is worthless. If you have Mountain Lion, just connect your printer via USB or Ethernet and then add the printer by opening System Preferences and then Print & Scan. If the printer is properly connected (and your local network is live), your Mac will find the Epson WorkForce WF-7010 Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CB59201) and download all the appropriate software needed. Just throw out Epson's instruction manual and forget their downloads Web site. The links are all broken and you won't be able to download anything useable.

Okay, so the PROS first:
This feels solid, not cheap plastic like my other printer. Both the top and the paper tray drawers also feel solid, not floppy, which is a noticeable problem if you look at printers in a chain store (some of the drawers feel like they'd break off easily). So, that makes it feel like quality. It looks good.
It comes with a sample pack of paper, which is helpful (see below on why). The ink cartridges are extra-large capacity so they don't need to be changed as often, and single color replacements are possible (see more on that below too).

CONS:
First off, I had trouble even at Office Max finding paper for this beyond the sample pack. Not sure why, but that may be an issue for you. Also, I used to think single color replacements were great, and that they'd save money. Not so, because if one color (say, cyan or magenta) is running out, it's not going to compensate. You will get a warning and then none of the colors, not even black, will work. I haven't run out on this model yet, of course, but my previous one did and being out of one color didn't save me, it still required a trip to purchase the color before I could do more b/w printing. Argh.

The other thing is you are tied to an ethernet cable instead of wireless. That's sort of outdated, I think, at least if you are using a laptop at home. In an office, maybe not such a big deal. But this isn't big enough for an office.

Take a look at the 7520 before you buy, it has more options and wi-fi.

Also, the heavier cardstock has a bit of a bleed on color prints, not terribly noticeable, but I printed some pics of close up jewelry and it was enough that I noticed on the finer details.

It's not a laser, so the images aren't laser color, but pretty good. The ink is supposed to be instant drying, but I did notice on two-sided pages that it still felt like it would smudge, not that it did. Like there was a heaviness to the page after. But, that said, I don't plan on doing many two sided prints so it may not be an issue.

As far as usage, I'm usually pretty comfortable with installing and using stuff like this, but figuring out the printing options wasn't that easy. Took me awhile with the manual to figure out how to orient some of it, so it wasn't "instinctive". Then again, I haven't had a two-sided printer before either. I think for a small business, this might be very helpful. However, while it says 2 reams of paper before running out of ink, that isn't really very much. Normally, as a student and mom, I use about a ream a month, so....ink expenses could run up.

All in all, I like it. For home and student use, it would be great, especially a kid doing colorful school projects. For a small office/business, no. And really, couldn't they make them in white once in awhile? It looks dusty fast.

Summary: Overall I'm pleased with this printer. It was simple to set up, simple to install, and it works well. That's not always the case with printers these days (especially in terms of the installation when you have multiple operating systems) so Epson deserves kudos for that. My quibbles are: it lacks a couple of convenience features (especially wireless networking); and the print quality, while good, is not stellar.

Review: I've used Epson printers in the past and have always been satisfied with the initial setup. No exception with this printer. While it's large (as you would expect given that it is a wide format printer) it is easy to work with right out of the box. It's packed well, with lots of easy-to-remove tape holding the parts together for transit. There's a clear "getting started" sheet that walks you through the setup steps. The only issue I encountered during setup was that it took what I felt was a long while to prime after inserting the print cartridges. Everything worked fine, but the time it spent chugging along to complete that task made me concerned that something was wrong.

The build quality is decent - everything feels substantial and certainly appropriate for the price point. No problems running the software on Win 7 32-bit, Win 7 64-bit and Win 98 machines.

The print quality is good. It is not high-end, but it makes the most out of the 4 print cartridges. I would not consider this to be professional quality, but perfectly fine for home or small office use, general snap shots, and the like. Speedy printing and quiet operation. No paper jamming or feeding problems even though I ran several sheets of paper that were damaged/crumpled on the edges for my initial test prints. That was impressive.

The downside of this printer is the lack of some convenience features. I also have an Epson Artisan, and love the LCD screen. Really missed having that on this printer. I also missed having wireless networking capability, especially since this has such a large footprint. My router is in the living room, and running a cable to it was a problem, both in terms of the cable itself, as well as having to have such as large printer in the living room. Although I hooked it up to see how it worked (no problems), this printer will not be networked since there is no room for it in the living room. It's going to be hooked up to just one PC in the rec room. It seems really odd to me that wireless networking was not included - it's so common these days to have it.

With the exception of the two issues listed above, I'm satisfied with this printer. It should definitely be on your short list if you're looking for a wide format printer that won't break the bank. Just remember that it will need to be hardwired into your router if you want to network it, so check the size (especially the width) to make sure you have room for it.

Ужасно

I've had this printer for a year and printed lots of newsletters, homemade postcards, printing a big batch about once a month. I often get smudges of black ink on the sides of the pages, which definitely puts a damper on looking professional with your mailing materials.

The 2-sided printing was the big factor for me buying this in the first place. With regular copy/multipurpose paper, it's fine, but cardstock often gets bent or crumpled, which wastes lots of ink and paper, and makes me mad. Printing envelopes had problems with alignment, so I only tried that once.

I wouldn't buy this printer again. It's not worth the headache.
