For this review, I'll be comparing to my designed-for-matte-paper Canon Pixma Pro9500 photo printer. The Epson R1900 photo printer is designed more for glossy prints, so it's interesting to compare the two.Test bed:MscBook Pro, OS X 10.5.5Apple Cinema Display 23", color-calibrated with a Spyder2 Pro.Adobe Photoshop CS3Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl paperIlford Inkjet Glossy Photo paper. The box is packaged as you might expect. Tape all over the place. Once you get the printer de-taped, you'll find an assortment of ink cartridges, and, *generously*, an extra gloss optimizer cartridge. I purposely put an asterisk on either side of that work, because this cartridge is notorious for running out rather quickly. After getting the printer set up, cartridges installed, it's time to install the drivers. This goes smoothly - stick the CD in the drive and you're away.OK, let's move on to printing. After editing a few shots in Photoshop with a very specific color cast, I printed them on both my Canon Pixma Pro9500 and the Epson R1900 with the correct paper profiles for each, and using both paper types listed above. The difference was not huge, but being able to compare the two, it was obvious which was more accurate: the Canon. No question. The Epson added a slight yellow cast to each photo, which drives me nuts. The Canon was spot on each time. Interestingly, I purchased the Ilford glossy paper specifically for this review, and was blown away that the Canon had no trouble at all printing to it, and produced a much more pleasing tone compared to the original image. This said, and to the Epson's credit, the actual print quality is VERY comparable between the Canon and the R1900.But, frustratingly, the Epson R1900 seems incapable of properly printing borderless. First, it crops a little off all four edges, whereas the Canon crops an almost unnoticeable amount by comparison. But worst of all, every Epson borderless print left a few ink spots on the very right hand edge of every landscape shot. I called Epson directly and they said it was "normal" for borderless shots to get an excess of ink on the edges. Fair enough, but the Canon has no such trouble, so this is disturbing to those who want to feed a 4x6 and end up with a 4x6 print without a border to trim.Lastly, the printer was used a few times this week, and as of the morning this review was written, the prints coming out were disastrous, akin to a Polarioid halfway through its "transformation" process. I ran a nozzle test, and indeed, the ink must have somehow dried out overnight. I had to a run a full head clean, which resolved the issue. Again, I can't help but make the comparison that the Pixma Pro9500 has never had this issue since the day I got it, many months ago. Not impressive that the Epson has this issue after several days...Overall, I can't really recommend this printer. It crops the edges too much, gets ink on the edges on borderless prints, doesn't print accurate colors even after calibration, and eats ink like you wouldn't believe. And the jet clogging has just left me paranoid...2/5

Electronics like dust; the collect it like it is mana from heaven. This can be very bad with a photo printer; the last thing you want is for a lot of dust to collect on your printer and then makes its way onto to your photo while it is printing. Thus, dust covers are a must!Sure there are plenty of generic dust covers out there, but most of those are made from plastic which discolors and dries out and doesn't hold up very well in the long run. That is where the Tumi Printer Cover for the Epson 3800 comes in. I was a little skeptical of the price at first because of my past experiences with printer covers; but, once I received it, I could see what I was paying for. This is not your typical printer cover. The Tumi Printer Cover is well constructed of ballistic nylon - the same stuff used to make indestructible outdoor gear bags. And, it fits perfectly over my Epson 3800, completely covering down to the table it sits on, and it leaves little space under it for pockets of air full of dust to enter.Like another reviewer, I have noticed that installing and removing the cover takes a little effort because of the rear paper feed, but that is only because Epson hung it off the printer with little to secure it. I have found that once you do it a couple of times, it is not a problem.

I've owned this printer for about a year now and I think it performs reasonably well. There are two significant issues with the unit I own:1) Occasionally it will refuse to recognize a replaced cartridge, but Epson has been very good about sending free replacements. The only issue is the waste of time and frustration when this happens. So far it happened to me on two occasions. Both times Epson replaced the defective cartiridges overnight. I did not even have to call them, just send them an e-mail and get a very quick response.2) I wasted half a roll of canvas trying to load it as per Epson instructions. The unit would accept the edge of the roll, but as I would send a print job in, it would report a media jam every time. Pressing the jam clearing button would result in the printer advancing a blank piece of canvas forward, while the roll back-up button would do nothing and I would have to pull the canvas out of the unit manually, damaging the canvas in the process and risking destroying the printer as well. I tried to follow Epson instructions twice with the same result and then decided to pre-cut the canvas roll to pieces of required length and feed them via a cut-sheet feeder. This approach worked like a charm - no jams and no problems. I got great prints of any length I needed. I will never use the crappy roll feeding system on this unit again.I gave the unit 4 stars to account for the two issues above.

I'd think seriously before buying this printer. I purchased this printer about 6 weeks ago after NAPP members were offered a discount. I purchased it directly from the Epson Store. I watched the video tutorials on how to get the best results using the R1900 and printing out of Lightroom that were provided on www.photoshopuser.com. I was DELIGHTED at the output and the quality. Never had my printer output so closely matched that of my calibrated monitor, and the 13x19 inch glossies were stunning. I was THRILLED...UNTIL...about 5 weeks after purchasing the printer I had to replace the Gloss Optimizer cartridge. This runs out fairly quickly as it is applied to the entire photo regardless of colors. Fine, I had extra genuine Epson cartridges I had purchased from a national retailer. Even though it was the correct cartridge the printer would not recognize it, then remembering that Epson had sent an extra Gloss cartridge, I dug it out thinking I had indeed bought the wrong one. I replaced it with the one Epson sent and all was good. I confirmed I had the RIGHT cartridge, and chalked it up to a defective cartridge. No biggy, it happens...THEN the Cyan ran out. I replaced it with a cartridge that I bought directly from the Epson store and had the same issue. The printer says it's an incompatible cartridge. IT is NOT. I called Epson support on Friday and they said they would send me a new cartridge and that it would be 3-5 days. Fine, but in the meantime I had prints that needed to be printed, so I again went to a retailer and bought a cyan cartridge. Not recognized. I googled the issue and found that other users had had the same issue, and that Epson had replaced their printers with brand new ones. I called Epson again. They said that they would only replace with a refurb since I was past the 30 day mark since I purchased, AND according to the Epson Warranty, I'LL be on the hook for shipping the defective printer to them. Problem is, I'm sure this printer was defective from day one, but since I didn't print a WHOLE lot right away, the cartridges didn't need replacing until after the 30 day return was up,and consequently I didn't find the defect until then. I'm extremely upset. I now have a bunch of defective cartridges and/or printer, no way to print the work I need to get out, and the best I can hope for is to get a REFURBISHED printer to replace the BRAND NEW printer I paid for. Do yourself a favor, look at the Canon and HP equivalent printers. If you search for issues on Epson cartridges, you'll find TONS. Not necessarily with the R1900, but with almost all Epson printers. This is the first, and LAST Epson I will buy.

Love this doubleweight-matte paper by Epson. I use it with my Epson 9900 and have never had a problem with it. The color quality is great, both for delicate lines and full-bleed matte photos. Ink dries instantly on this media and never smudges. The Epson paper stays flatter post-print then other generic papers I've used of the same paper-weight. 44" is a size specific to Epson, so if you are looking for 44" heavy stock, this is the paper to choose.

This printer offers excellent print-quality, and it does so in a small footprint. I'm amazed! However, Epson slacks a little in regards to reliable networking, beta-testing, shipping, and efficiency.I have possessed two of these printers and both had some major issue:#1 - First one was most likely damaged during packaging, because the shipping box was in pristine condition. I had to ship it back and get another printer, albeit, I didn't have to ship it until the new one arrived, but with Epson's poor tech-support, even this was no easy job for me. I ended up having to call the Headquarters to speak with someone, but the whole building was too busy with some big meeting to help me. Nobody EVER called me back during the whole experience of swapping the two printers out.#2 - Second printer was also damaged (STRAIGHT FROM EPSON!), but I managed to reset the front tray. You can tell the machine is fragile, just from the serious amount of foam and blue tape Epson ships the device with. It takes a good 5-10 minutes to carefully unpack. Printers have never really been built like tanks, and I don't expect the manufacturers will find a way any time soon.#3 - Bug in the software? My printer suddenly started displaying it was using Photo-Black ink, instead of Matte. So I set it to swap the blacks out back to Matte black. Soon after, it displayed Photo Black again. So I wasted two swaps to find a cosmetic BUG! Cosmetic, sure, but this is a bit over the top. Epson even mis-spelled the word, "Networking" in the Firmware update utility inside the LFP Remote Panel. If that's indicative of Epson's attention to detail, I can only imagine this is where they had to cut some jobs to give the K3-ink crew more time and materials. I'm just glad the K3-ink department got it right!#4 - The IT staff at Epson should get more involved with the design engineers and help them understand more about RELIABLE LAN networking. This printer is among the lowest quality LAN nodes I've dealt with in my life. I'm a Cisco Network Engineer, btw. If you want to experience repeated futility, try getting this thing to regain an Ethernet connection to a Mac Book Pro after unplugging the cable and rebooting either device. I don't wish to think every Epson printer does this, but I'm surprised Epson didn't build any decent Ethernet status monitoring in the printer. No, that's something HP does well, and have proven it for the last ten years.#5 Poorly laid out menus and buttons: Yeah I've worked with better. Question: Why do you have to reboot the printer to change it's IP address? Haven't we evolved enough to virtually eliminate reboots?I can't boast enough about the print-quality, and to keep the price within reach, there has to be some sacrifices made along the way. Shareholders don't budge on these things, and I don't expect Seiko to, either. So, if you can live with potential issues in production as such, I think you'll be a satisfied customer, assuming your printer arrives intact and without something bent. I just wish Epson could have worked a little harder on other aspects of the printer that may not relate directly to the actual image.btw, the whole time it took me to type this review, the Epson print software STILL hadn't figured out it cannot print due to the Printer's NIC card not communicating! How about a little better error-checking? I wish Canon were better, but they're really not. They seem to have budget issues caused by shareholders, too.

I checked with my manual (for the 3800 printer) and found that this little guy collects the drippings from the ink as it's being used. Extra ink is used during print head cleaning and print head alignment. Think if it as a broiler pan for your printer. You can check the "% left" by going to Menu, printer status and down to Maintenance Cartridge and it will tell you how much useful life it has left (if only we all had that option.) The manual will also tell you how to change it when you need to. You can download a PDF manual from the Epson site for free.

I now own both the R1800 and the R3800 printers. I bought the R1800 a few years ago, shortly after it came out. This fall I attended a photo trade show in NYC. There were prints on display that were stunning and I got excited about upgrading my printer. There were two or three things I wanted. I wanted larger ink cartridges, so I wouldn't have to order replacements after printing just a few large prints and I wanted a reduction in the cost of the ink. I wanted better quality in the grey scale. I wanted to not have to perform maintenance on the printer (cleaning etc) so often because this wastes ink. I wanted the best quality ink I could get. The thing that really tipped me over to buying this printer was the discovery that the R1800 does not use the same ink set as the professional printers and that the R1800 cannot produce good quality when printing black and white images because it lacks the additions black cartridges. The reason I didn't go with the R2400 was that I did not like the idea of having to switch black cartridges and the waste of ink involved. The 3800 produces great prints and the quality of the greyscale is a noticable improvement over the R1800. But I have to say that it is not as easy a printer to use. While the R1800 came with profiles that were right on target out of the box, I have had to make sure that my monitor is calibrated correctly for the prints to match and I even calibrated the printer. This was somewhat expensive, but I believe that these are necessary steps if you really want to have control over color and the quality of your prints. So, I would recommend this printer for people who want to take their work to the next level, or certainly, for professional photographers. But it is more work to really make use of the extra quality by fine tuning the profiles. I think in the end it will be worth it. The printer has a much larger footprint than the R1800 and it is quite heavy. It does not take a roll which is one downside. but it is able to take many types of paper and can be adjusted in ways the are impossible on the R1800. So, if you are a serious photographer or would be photographer and you want to print your own work to get the quality you want, then I recommend this printer. The R1800 is also capable of beautiful stunning output, but it feels more like a toy next to this printer. Also, one other thing. It comes with Epson support and the support is very very good. The first time I called I talked to them for almost an hour while they taught me about the various aspects of using the printer. You dont get that kind of support when you buy a printer targeted at the consumer market.

I really wish I'd read this before I bought my R1900 a few months ago. Not only does it use ink at a horrific rate, more than half the time the new, Epson replacement cartridge isn't recognized. I've called Epson several times and they are really helpful and friendly and are very quick to send me a replacement cartridge when i tell them i've already gone through the troubleshooting procedures (I've become an expert by now). 3 days ago it happened again. Cyan ran out 3/4 of the way in printing a 13x19 print for a job i needed the next day. Neither of the remaining TWO cartridges will work. It wasted the print and the job didn't get done. I am going to demand a refund on the piece of junk. DO NOT BUY EPSON PRINTERS unless you have deep pockets for ink. The ink for the R1900 can only be purchased, as far as I can tell, from Epson. They don't even want the defective carts back for review which tells me a whole lot about their quality control.Purchased in Sept 089/23: ordered ink10/1: called tech support and ordered Cyan replaced10/9: called tech support and ordered Gloss replaced11/3: called tech support and ordered Yellow replaced12/9: ran out of Cyan (two replacement carts not recognized. Will be talking with Epson Monday about a refund on printer.NEVER AGAIN WITH EPSON.

I researched the Epson Sylus printer that I purchased and discovered that it suffers from a weak hinge on on one of its doors and many people lost that door by the second month. I decided to preempt this problem by purchasing the Tumi cover which cam recommended highly and now I can see why. Made of medium "ballistic" nylon it has "heft" and fits like a glove. Stiff enough to hold its shape and flexible enough to conform to the printer. It even has a built-in pouch that fits over the paper feed tray so the tray doesn't have to be completely closed. Great design, great engineering, great product.

I am an amateur photographer and have made the financial decision to take my work to the next level. This included purchasing this printer as well as the new Nikon D300 DSLR. I wanted to be able to take very high image quality pictures and then print them out at various sizes at a quality that would match any studio. The first printer that was shipped to me had to be returned as some internal parts were trapped on the first print job by the print head and jammed up the printer. Not a great beginning. The second printer arrived within days. I printed another test print and this one made it through the printer! However, the colors were completely off from what I saw on the display versus what appeared on the print.I'd just learned my first lesson about controlling the process end-to-end (photo to print) and that was that color management was more than a maybe. It's a MUST.I then purchased a kit to calibrate both the monitor and the printer (even though the printer ships with a print profile). After calibration and following some very specific steps on each and every print job, I now get reliably correct prints. And they're beautiful! If you're considering this printer, be aware of the following three key issues:1) You stand a chance of getting one with mechancial problems and will need to have a replacement.2) You will also likely run into issues of color management. If you don't know what that is I'd highly recommend you read up on it.3) If you haven't yet, you will now notice the imperfections of your captured images and will want to upgrade your camera gear because this printer creates excellent renditions of your photographs. IF your images are clear and sharp, so will the prints.Bottom line, in spite of the issues I ran into using this printer, I'd do it all over again and would recommend it highly.

I bought the Epson 1900 to back up a old 2200 I have and have had nothing but problems since. To start off it eats through inks getting half the total square inch coverage I get on my 2200. I have had continuous paper feeding issues using Epson papers. Every now and then in the process of printing a image it dumps a ton of ink on the paper making the print worthless. Now in switching ink cartridges it won't recognize the new cartridge. In fact it won't recognize any of them. I've re-booted the printer several times, re-installed the software several times and am ready to trash it. In the 5-6 years I've had the 2200 I've never had a issue. I even recommended Epson to another photographer and they've had nothing but problems. Obviously Epson cares nothing about quality anymore and this will be the last Epson I buy. To top it off the customer service number is not a 1-800 number.

I'm a Fine Art Digital Photographer, not a techno geek to make it plain to those reading my assessment of the Epson Stylus Pro 3800. Since getting into the digital arena and printing my own images, I've been with Epson exclusively. My digital prints are quality images, printed on the many available Epson substrates - with perfect results. The Pro3800 is intuitive and easy to use, the switching between photo and matte inks is seamless, but takes a little time. So what. Coming from a wet darkroom experience in the past, time was something expected and desired for the outcome of a beautiful print. The printer's colors are spectacular, the black and whites are great, the manual is easy to understand and if followed, the results speak for themselves.Perhaps I should mention that my printer is upstairs in my studio, attached to my MacBook Pro and used only for the purpose of creating my photographs. The previous reviewer speaks of many other applications he had in mind for this unit. Perhaps his expectations somehow exceed the normal use for a printer of this caliber. But, I admit, I am no techno person, just an artist who is delighted with the performance of this printer. As to the shipping mishaps he has experienced, unfortunate, but does happen. I bought my printer through Amazon, and it arrived in tip top shape. Also, I've always had good customer support from Epson in the past, so don't know why he didn't.For you ..... prospective buyers ...... assess your printing needs first, look up other printers and independent reviews, then make an informed choice.West Cornwall, Connecticut

I ordered a roll of paper and 2 ink cartridges from Amazon, which used Antonline.com to fulfill the orders. The e-mail notice of products shipped did not list the items, only the tracking number, although it said: "The following item(s) from your order number xxxxxxxxx have shipped. You will receive them shortly." Order was placed on 9/17, 2 packages (contents unlisted) shipped on 9/19, 1 arrived 9/22 and the other on 9/25. When I contacted customer support to inquire about the third item which did not arrive with the other cartridge, I was told that it had been damaged in transit and they were submitting a claim to the insurer. When I asked for the cartridge to be shipped overnight they declined. Nine days after placing the order, I still do not have the cartridge. I will not order anything from this company again.

I am a professional photographer and decided that I was tired of the horizontal banding on my 7600 whenever I did not use it for a few days always necessitating a head cleaning or two. After 6 years and 11,000+ prints I'm really not complaining about the 7600 but it was time to make a decision. After some research and discussions with dealers, I thought I'd give the 3800 the nod over the more expensive 4880 and I am happy to report that I am pleasantly pleased. With a much smaller footprint than the 7600, it gives nothing up in print quality and as a matter of fact beats the quality which really pleased and suprised me. Color matching with my monitor was perfect right out of the box another plus, no messing with profiles or rip's. Another plus was that the sheet feeding eliminates the curling you get with roll paper which was worse as you got towards the end of the roll. All these plusses and quieter operation too!I have gone 3 days without using it so far and the first print after that had no banding! At this point after 3 weeks use and about 200 prints, I am 100% satisfied with this product.

I have had this printer for a week now and all I can say is WOW! I was concerned after I read the reviews here but decided to buy anyway because of past experience with Epson, and I am so happy I did. When the box arrived I picked up the 'Start Here' booklet and within an hour and three prints (13"x19") I was getting better results than the stuff I had paid a professional lab $15.00 each for! No more, I just fired my lab.I am printing from Photoshop CS3 using Adobe RGB color space and ICC information. The prints are incredibly color saturated with great contrast to really 'pop'.I am absolutely in love with this printer!Another week:No change in my opinion, other than I like it even more. I printed 20 8x10 and 7 13x19 before having to add ink (Yellow and Cyan). Prints on Epson's fine art paper are fantastic! This is my last review.

We purchased the Professional version of the Stylus Pro 3800 which costs several hundred dollars more than the standard model.Unfortunately, we are on our third printer. Presumably this was sheer bad luck that we got a couple of lemons. The first printer failed shortly after purchase. The second one suffered a serious paper jam and had to be taken into an Epson service center (across the state I might add). They repaired it while my wife waited. However, it failed almost immediately upon being put back in service. On a positive note, Epson customer service has been excellent and when the printer works it produces excellent quality prints. However, it seems to have a paper feeding system prone to catastrophic jams and it does not do well with thick papers. Since this is supposed to be a professional model the inability to handle thick specialty papers and to use the full range of feeding options has been a major disappointment. We just put the third printer into service and it has worked with a few simple test prints. Maybe this one will be OK.We have owned a number of Epson printers over the years and this has been the only model that has been unreliable.

I bought 8.5x11 photo paper in advance of receiving for testing and etc and to my surprise the printer came with a packet of Luster Photo Papers(8.5x11).Working with PS CS3 for borderless printing took a while to figure out but I'm a printing fool now. Ive had this printer for over a year now, and its flawless. Wanted black and white prints that actually looked like black and white, with no color cast unless I put it there. It does that and more. 17x22's are beautiful. Its not a cheap printer, but ink savings are substantial considering the cost per ml is much lower than my previous 2200's Have already made my money back on this printer months ago from sales of framed photos, and photography is just a side thing for me now. If I could say anything bad at all about the 3800, it would probably be the cheap feeling output tray and front closing mechanism. Nothing has broken, but Im careful, it just feels kind of cheap. I expect better quality from Epson for a printer of this price. Because of this, I gave it 4 stars. As far as print quality, it gets a 5. You cant get bigger or better prints from any other manufacturer at this price.
