This router is easy to set up and easy to use, but the constant line-dropping, the constant rebooting and the wireless rejections cause endless frustrations.Despite all the evidence against this product (a google search for 'PADT TAG' - the line-dropping problem - lists d-link routers in the first 14 finds!!!), the D-Link company *flat-out* denies any fault or problem with their creations.Another classic case of the marketing department running the technical support!

I plugged it in and upgraded firmware ASAP. Then I did a quick recon of my available options. WOW! there are a lot of options at this price point.Next I setup my wireless configuration with an emphasys on wireless security. I can allow only certain MAC addresses, have WEP enabled, or WPA, and only passout a certain number of IP addresses, thus allowing only as many PCs on my network as I need. Awesome! Now the reliability of this router seems to be in question. And I don't doubt others have problems as it seems there are enoug of them, but I bought this off of recommendations from others who have it working. I'm not sure what other people's specific problems are, but this router works great for me and has been for months.

There isn't much I can say about this router, except that it works wonders for us here at home. We use it to share our Internet conenction between 4 PCs and a wireless laptop. The laptop has become ultra portable and is very useful with it's wireless capabilities. We don't have any problems with the PCs not connecting, or staying connected to the router/internet.All the good things are pretty much covered by everyone else here in the reviews. Bascially it's easy to use and it works. I don't think you can ask for much more than what this provides.I recommend upgrading the firmware when you get it though as the copy loaded onto the router may be an older version.

Purchased both the DI-624M & DWL-G650M two days ago. Very easy to set-up and configure. Works like a champ......no problems at all. I'm connected at 108 Mbps using the DWL-G650M card just fine. Perhaps the previous poster didn't not have his router configured for "Super G with Dynamic or Static" mode enabled. Also a few bucks cheaper than the equivalent Linksys router. One thing about Linksys' router that bothered me is that no where on the box does it claim any rate of speed, however the part/model has "54g" as part of it (suspect) I was specifically shopping for a 108 Mbps throughput for video sharing on my network. I upgraded from Linksys' 1st gen 11b router so this is a major jump for me. BTW my WLAN is made up of wireless-11b/54g, and now the 108 speed. Router responds well with all mixed speeds. Oh yeah, coverage is excellent so far!

I bought one of these routers, and I was NEVER able to get any of my computers to get an IP address from it while WPA encryption was turned on. It wasn't just the single unit either, I had exactly the same problem with a replacement unit, and between two different laptops, one with an Intel wireless-G card, one with a Broadcom. If you want to use high encryption on your wireless network, forget this box.

This is an inexpensive, easy to setup router / firewall combo. You'll be fine if you do no online gaming or anything requiring consistent connectivity. There are ongoing, unresolved issues with DLink routers and how they handle a PADT packet from your ISP's equipment. This router handles the command by not only disconnecting, but by also REBOOTING itself. This leads to a 15-30 second disconnect condition while the device reboots.I'm sorry to say I really can't recommend this item (it's rebooted 3 times while writing this!)

Compatibility issues are always present and, depending on hardware you already have, there is a chance that any given router will not work for you. That said, I had a chance to test my DI-624 on four networks (both LAN/Ethernet and Wireless B/G) and it worked perfectly. Cable modems I've used were Motorola, Cisco and Netgear.I know D-Link's tech support is somewhat sketchy in the US, but I don't think this is a product you'd need support on. It self-explanatory, really. You can access it's configuration interface from any PC that's connected to one of it's four LAN ports via Internet browser on 192.168.0.1. However, there's only wireless SSID and optional password to set, everything else in plug and play. Unless you want to customize firewall, DHCP and things like that. Actually, there's a demo of this interface on manufacturer's site so you can check it out yourselves.Using DI-624 in a home network with 3 "wired" PCs and 2 wireless notebooks has been a trouble free experience. Suddenly, all 5 PCs were connected to the Internet and were in LAN. It's range is superb - I can connect to it from the parking, which is some 300ft from my builing, and router is on the 5th floor, behind a reinforced concrete wall. Of course, inside the apartment itself, reception is always perfect. I just had to set password, though, so I wouldn't provide free wireless Internet to entire building.

The router worked fine. I had plenty of signal everywhere through my house. The problem was that the DWL-G650M card didn't have a 'super G' option available. That meant that I could only connect at 54mbps rather than the full 108mbs. D-lin's support was able to replicate the problem, and after 5 hours on the phone, they didn't have a solution. On the plus side, they did try very hard to help.I ended up returning the card and the router, and buying a the Linksys WRT54GX router and WPC54GX. If you don't care about 108 vs 54, or you have the patience to wait for a firmware upgrade to fix the Super G problem, then you can't go wrong. If you want to take advantage of teh 108mbps, take a look at the Linksys or the Belkin competing products..

This router has been on the market for many years now and it just keeps getting better. With the new hardware upgrades (faster processor, more memory, etc.) and firmware upgrades (more effecient speeds, and reliability) this is only getting better with age.If you are looking for a well seasoned router that's been through the ringer and back, this is your router. All the features this thing has is incredible. For being such a reasonable price this router has a very good features to price ratio.

This router is my first wireless one ever and I am very pleased with the purchase. After a lot of research, I decided on the D-Link. I have read that LinkSys routers set the standard for ease of use, but I cannot really imagine how much easier installation and setup can get! Honestly, I had the router setup in under 10 minutes with my laptop connected to my cable modem and accessing the internet via the router's LAN port (i.e. ethernet cable). The router sports some nice firewall features. I was not too impressed with the online help however. Several options that the router offers for configuration were not described in the online help (stored in router firmware). The D-Link support site has decent information, perhaps enough for you to get most problems taken care of. However, I had an issue when using the D-Link DWL-G650 card with WAP security which after about 6 hours of frustration got resolved in about 5 minutes with a phone call to customer service. Anyway, this was no fault of the router itself since the blame lies on the outdated driver D-Link ships with the PC card. I use AT&T VPN solution to access my office network and the router works just fine. The DHCP server came up just fine and my machines were happily on the network via wires.Pros:- easy to setup- good security features- D-Link website has pretty good cust service info- IPSEC VPN passthrough worked without any issuesCons:- online help included in firmware not the best- Several advanced options of firewall etc not very well documented (ie. not that easy to use for those inexperience with advanced security settings)Overall, I'd give this router a 4.5 stars and would definitely consider it a good buy for both the novice as well as experienced computer users.

EDIT: After a firmware upgrade, the unit is working far better, and has been in use for about 3 months at my residence. Still, it drops out intermittently, and there are better choices.(1) Drops connections - a lot.(2) Many - hundreds of websites - report the same problem.(3) D-Link hired lots of marketers to write good opinions of this device. Don't trust them.(4) I know what I'm doing. I've set up my computer on literally a dozen different networks without a problem, and configured routers of various stripes for almost a decade. This isn't a newbie error - I was floored for many hours trying to get this thing to work.(5) It still doesn't work reliably.(6) This issue isn't a 'bad unit' issue - many other people sent in their D-Link routers, got a new one, and had exactly the same problem.Bottom line: one of the worst purchases I have made -- and I know what I'm doing. AVOID AVOID AVOID!

I'm a systems administrator and have years of experience working with networking equipment, and this is one of the best, if not the best product in it's category. I have always been happy with D-Link products but I was a bit skeptical with this one because of the mixed reviews. I took a chance and I definitely was surprised, as this product is even better than any of the other previous D-Link products I have used. Where can I begin...first of all make sure you get rev. C, not A or B. I have a lot of networking knowledge, but most people who would consider this product could at least have an internet connection with it in a few minutes. Despite it's simple easy to use setup interface, the features are unmatched in any product in it's class. D-Link is always good about releasing significant firmware updates and this prodcut is no exception. Everything you read in reviews about this product, that users complain about, has been fixed with future firmware revisions. For example, they added MAC reservations, they added an option for 802.11G only mode, they now have 108Mb/s support (although you need their network card for this). etc. I can't go into detail in this space about the excellent features, but let me say that I have a very sophisticated home network and this is the only home router that does the job for me. Multiple VPN connections, using PTP or IPSEC work great on this thing, WITHOUT turning off the firewall (read the fineprint with other products). The product does port redirection not just port forwarding (again look at similar products). This product is also very useful if you are looking for a product that can help limit what your kids can do. More features for restricting Internet Access than any home router I have seen. Oh, and range is excellent I get 54Mb/s anywhere in my 3 bedroom house, and I get good signal strength all the way out to our street (and beyond) at about 5.5Mb/s. Mixed 802.11b and 802.11g clients also work very well, contrary to what some others have said. Anyway, I have had no problems with this product whatsoever, and it's one of the best pieces of networking equipment I have ever used.

This is my second router - my first was a wired, D-link DI-604, which worked like a charm. Then, I bought this wireless one. Almost immediately, the problems started - random router reboots, like everyone else seems to have.Four calls to tech support got me nowhere, until the final, 2nd level support person I talked to suggested something interesting. I disabled the wireless capability entirely via the setup interface, and physically removed the antenna just to make sure. The support person said that if it then works without incident, that means something in the "environment" is sending a signal that is causing the modem to reset itself.Well, sure enough, the router is 100% OK now. But, it's also now not a wireless modem. The culprit? In the next room, no more than 5 feet away - a 2.4GHz Cordless Phone, bought around the same time as the modem. If I leave it unplugged, or if I leave the wireless capability of the modem off, I'm OK. With both on, I get the drops. So, you have two choices: avoid cordless phones or any other appliances in that frequency range (good luck - it's amazing how many appliances cause various radiation signatures), or alternately, you could buy a modem that DOESN'T ACCEPT RESETS FROM EXTERNAL WIRELESS CONNECTIONS! I recommend the latter. This modem has an obvious, fatal flaw.

While all other features of this product work fine, there is one key deficiency that is not evident to consumers via presales information. The problem is that computers with wireless network adapters cannot access devices/computers that are physically plugged into the router's ports. This was confirmed by DLINK's level two support. DLINK simply won't talk to you about this limitation because they consider it a "networking issue" and therefore, you're on your own (aka SOL).How will this impact you? Well, if you want to do file sharing between a laptop and desktop computer you're going to have a problem. In my case, I have a DLINK DP-300U print server plugged into the router. I can print to it just fine via wire, but I can't print via wireless. Can't even ping it from wireless.I mean, the fact that you can't form a network amongst the devices connected to this product via wired and wireless connections is an amazing oversight. No, it's not firewall software, etc., etc. Using a laptop with a USB "wired" adapter and two "wireless" (g and b) adapters, the same result appeared in all tests. Wired worked for communicating with devices physically connected to the DI-624, but wireless did not.In case I wasn't clear earlier, all devices, wired and wireless can talk to the DI-624 and they can access the Internet. Again, the problem is that on the DI-624, wired and wireless devices cannot communicate, making a home network a pipe dream. All devices in these tests interacted perfectly with the DI-624's DHCP server and all were on the same subnet.

1) 256-bit WEP with other D-Link adapter cards. (The other brands have 128-bit as the highest encryption). Plus enabling this level of WEP doesn't effect speed performance like other brands do.2) MAC Filtering. I can restrict which actual adapters can connect to my network, wired or wireless. The advantage is clear for wireless, but the advantage for wired is in case someone brings a laptop with a wired adapter. They can't just sit down and plug in, they need permission first.3) Setup/Configuration is a snap. You just login with your web browser and click on what you want. It is very clearly laid out and easy to navigate. 4) You can disable SSID broadcast, you have been able to for a long time. You can also turn off the wireless portion of this router so that when you aren't using it, or say are going on vacation you know you are safe from those pesky wardrivers. (eventhough the MAC filtering and 256-bit WEP should be enough)5) The 802.11b+ speeds. a.k.a. 22Mbps - plus 4x mode. With these enabled and with your D-Link wireless adapter card (DWL-650+ and other + products) I can get 10Mbps raw data transfer speeds. Most 802.11b networks can only achieve 5Mbps if they are performing optimally.6) The range on this router/AP is plenty adequate. In my 1500 sq ft home I get almost full coverage with my AP in a central location away from most electronic devices. There are only certain places where I don't get signal, but lets just say I get the signal where I need it. I can be outside on the porch, in the bathroom, in any of the bedrooms, kitchen, parts of the den, and so on.7) The combination of this firewall, smart downloading, and windows updates keeps me virus free. Overall I feel very safe, very comfortable and very free to roam the house with my laptop. Plus my other PCs are safe and work fine.I've had this router for about a year with no problems and upgrading is always fun since D-Link is either fixing bugs, adding more speed, or more features with every upgrade.Only you can decide for yourself which router you get, but for this price and you get all this I'd say your search is over.

The DI-614+ (rev B and earlier) consistently outperforms more expensive models from netgear and linksys in distance testing (check PCMAG and PCWorld for starters). While I have no hard data of my own to support these tests, I have found this router to outperform my 2.4GHz phone (which otherwise isn't a terrible test for range.)Of course improving antenna preformance isn't a bad idea either and amoung many options for doing so you might consider http://osiris.urbanna.net/antenna_designs/projects/Ez-10/.The 614+ gets its fair share of bad consumer reviews, but you have to take these with a grain of salt --- setting up a wireless network is not like hooking up a new keyboard. The 614+ does not have as many configuration settings as some other routers, but the available settings are adequate for most users. I have set mine up to allow only the MAC's I enter, to NOT broadcast its SSID (under Advanced -- Performance) and to use 128 WEP. (I also run firewalls on all my machines.) Turning off and on each of these settings without losing specific parameters is quick and easy. It is true that the 614+ does not generally allow you to have different settings for wireless versus hardwired computers or to enter a phrase to generate keys (a very nice feature). It is also true that the interface is a little weak. Still for the price (like $30 after rebate here recently), it is a steal. If you need a router with better distance performance than the 614+, I suggest that you ignore the standard netgear and linksys offerings and move up to a 200mW unit (like one of the Senao offerings). Of course then you should get comparable adapters (like the SMC High Power PC Card --- which is a good bet in any case). Here is some last advice: assign a unique SSID and set up the net without any security. Once you have everything working then you can add in security features... oh, and check the channel --- different vendors default to different channels.

I've thrown everything from LAN gaming, Online gaming, multi-day long download times, VPN passthrough, PCAnywhere access, broadband video phone traffic, not to mention lots of 802.11g and 802.11b wireless access. This router can handle it all with the right configurations and proper settings. The problems I had were few and far between and were easily solved with a reboot and/or corrected settings. I was usually the cause of the problems anyway. I'm a little impatient sometimes. :)Overall I have to give this router 5 stars and I hope it is at least in your list of products to consider.

I purchased the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ based on rebates from Dlink and my need for a wireless connection. I found setup to be a breeze from the router's side, but the wireless PCI NIC was much more work. Out of the box, both worked, but my speeds were low and I knew I had no security. On to configuration as wireless is inherently insecure. I played with the settings and read the manual to try and make sure 3 things happened: I wanted encrypted data, connection speeds of 22 Mbps and I do not want my neighbors piggybacking on my connection or into my LAN. I achieved all, but with some work and technical knowledge. The problem is that many manufacturer have moved to manuals with simple definitions of features, not detailed information about configuration. I suppose they know we rarely read them. I network Windows 2K daily, but I think others might have some difficulty configuring the advanced (necessary) features of this device. Many may not even think about security issues since it will work out of the box more or less, which will leave them open. DLink does not stress the need for security and does not explain clearly how to implement it. There is another reviewer who previously said you cannot keep your neighbor out of your LAN. This is not true as you can keep you SSID from being broadcast or use encryption to only allow your computers to connect. I tested this and verified with D-Link tech support (replied by email overnight!). He was right that they do not implement it in the same way they use to or how he wants it, but the capability is there. It again is just not done in a straightforward manner. This router also has four ports for wired access as well, so I also hooked up my other PC. Now that everything is set up, I love it. The problem I find with this and other home NAT routers is that the manufacturers put many features in the routers, but supply poor assistance and explanation in configuration. The web interface for this device is not as clear or as well organized as others and the manual is mostly definitions. This means a less technical person will spend a good deal of time setting security and may not get the 22 Mbps promised. Since this sells in Best Buy and here at Amazon.com for the standard user, more step by step instructions would help on the setups that require multiple field configurations. Overall, this is a very good product that I found works great once configured. I am not sure you will get much better in other brands. I have used Linksys, Siemans and Belkin routers and they all have some level of limited documentation and funky interfaces. PCWorld verified the 22 Mbps speed of this device and with 256 bit encryption the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ begins to stand out among the rest.

This router packs a lot of features (punches) for a relatively low price. It is easy to set up on my PC through a wizard, although in my case, I have to also reset the router by turning the power off and on. After this initial setup, it works like a charm. It has great range. My router is tucked away on the second floor and I can still get good signal in the basement from a laptop with a matching d-link DWL-G650 card. My other laptop, a Mac Powerbook G4, can also connect at b mode with no tweaking on my part. Great compatibility as well.As for problems that some reviewers here complained about, I highly recommend downloading the latest firmware which fixes the following problems :1) Full compliance with the final, ratified 802.11g standard2) SSID broadcast can now be disabled for better securityTo the reviewer who complained that his Win XP laptop recognizes his DWL-G650 pc card and connects to the wireless network, but that the d-link's own utility can not see the card and the network ? The problem is that Win XP assigns to the card its own generic driver. You have to download the latest driver from d-link, uninstall the Win XP driver, and then tells Win XP to install/update manually the driver from d-link! Here are the detailed steps :Go to control panel --> system --> device manager --> network adapter --> DWL-G650 whatever ...Uninstall the Win XP driver for the card. Pull out the card and insert it back in. In the Windows new hardware setup wizard, click on set up/find driver manually, and then browse to the folder where you have unzipped and installed the latest d-link driver and utility. After this, the d-link utility will be able to see and configure the card and manage the wireless network.Overall, this is a great wireless g router with a good support site. Very satisified and highly recommended!

This is my third wireless system. The last either had bad reception problems, bad connection problems or just stopped working. They both were SMC systems. They both were small nightmares to get up and running, and of course customer support sucked. I got rid of my last wireless system which was 802.11a which I bought because I thought it was much better. I am not a computer wiz I'll admit that but this technology should be easy for people like me to set up and use. I am who they sell this stuff to.I read reviews and decided to get this system with the D-link DWL-G650. I held my breath when I started setting it up. I was waiting for the minute when I would realize that I would need to call customer support. That didn't happen. This system did almost set itself up. I have a 2.4GHz phone and it doesn't seem to effect the range. I live in a brick house and I just went outside in my driveway, on the other side of house from where my wireless router is set up and I was getting almost 100% full signal strength. The online interface is very easy to use and the instructions are easy to follow. I did upgrade the firmware before I set up any of the hardware and the 108Mbps system is up and running. I can't say if this system will work tomorrow, but today I am very suprised at how it works.

The setup of the router is simple. You can actually go to D-Link's website and use the emulator, that way you can get an idea on what the configuration screens look like.I have the Rev C router, which is smaller and has only only 1 antenna. It supports both WEP and WPA security. The range in my 2 story house is good. The router is on the second floor. From time to time, while sitting down stairs, I will get interference from my Neighbors router, if my card loses connection with my router. With the firmware upgrade you get speeds of up to 108 mbps. I average around 42 mbps sitting downstairs. Keep in mind if you have any wireless hardware that does not support 108 mbps turbo mode it will prevent your router from using it. I have had it for a month now, so far everything is working good.
