I had an older Headroom Total Bithead USB headphone amplifier I had been using previously. This device gave better sound quality, and helped drive my Sennheiser HD595's more than the stock output. It also allowed me to bypass some of the junky sound cards I've had on a few of my computers.Ultimately the Create X-Fi HD has easily surpassed the previous amp. The construction of this amp is of sturdy plastic (could almost be mistaken for metal), has full size 1/4 jacks for the headphone (no more adapters!). The volume wheel controls the actual system volume (instead of a 'line-out' style output, and then it controlling the volume a second time as well). I have not noticed any noise when the amp is on but nothing is playing (not even a slight hiss, even with the volume way up).Couple of odd things I noticed. I had it plugged into an unpowered usb hub, and occasionally if other things were plugged/unplugged (that were on the same hub) the headphone amp would stop putting out sound and I'd have to go through a process to get it working again. That's when I realized it was on the unpowered hub, moved it off and it worked great. I don't think it's the hubs problem, as most of the time it was getting full juice (and therefore working), but when it had less juice available it acted really weird. The second annoying thing I encountered is the blue light. It's not blindingly bright, but it still can be seen out of the corner of your eye, although most of the time I don't notice it. The biggest issue is when the volume is on mute, it then blinks, which I can see more, and seems to be more annoying. Nice for a visual indicator without having to check the volume on the computer, but could be annoying to some.

This is an excellent external soundcard. I had another external Soundblaster soundcard that sounded no better than the internal soundcard on my laptop. I'm using the card to drive a pair of 3000W class D amps.

Once configured with optical spif input enabled, can it be used as a standalone DAC without computer ? I want to use it for apple tv2 spif output to convert to analog output, without computer, once configured. Possible?

I wanted to check out and see what this was because I have very sensitive hearing.It was easy to install and I'm not super tech savvy, just plugged in my USB port and waited to follow instructions while it set itself up. My computer is still new, just out of the box a few weeks ago - it's a Dell with all the latest software, and I didn't have any issues loading this product. I borrowed my husbands fancy speakers and played music on my computer. Wow - it was great to hear such distinct instruments and tracks. I appreciated the sound quality and it wasn't offensive to my ears - no static or pops.My husband was bummed that this is not compatible with his mac, I have PC (but not sure if it was just us not being too technical).We used it with our TV using RCA cables, watching a movie as a family, and it was cool to have such amazing sound quality. It's one of those things that you don't know you're missing until you really hear all the nuances that go into sound production. Now I wonder what we've missed as far as sound all these years.I haven't tried recording yet, but am inspired to learn how now to make an audio section on my website. Will update review once I've figured this out!I'm not a dj, so didn't use the dj mix abilities but it looks cool. Hope this helps the less techy that are interested in checking this out. My only stress would be that speakers are not included - you need to have your own and the higher quality the better.

A beginner's review.I jumped into this product when I saw the price was dropped to $69.99. At this price point, what I can tell is this thing really shines!!! As a non-audiophile who just want my music to sound better, this little thing really took my listening experience to a whole new level.What I want is to buy a headphone+speaker amplifier that can compliment my Sennheiser HD598. After considering some alternatives (namely nuforce udac 2 or fiio e10), I chose this because of the price and its larger size (I believe the larger size can help in quality instead of paying the premium for "style").While many others complained about the software support, I found no problem with them and felt that the THX Studio Effect really did help in some cases, especially while playing movies and games.In short, this thing really make my HD 598 sound great with excellent clarity, tight bass and superb sound stage.

Up until recently I had been using 3 different audio chipsets -an Asus Xonar DG, onboard realtek 889 (the best onboard they make), and the one in my Logitech Z Cinema speakers. I expected the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD USB audio system to be a big step up given the price, and my expectations were exceeded. Music sounds cleaner (less noise) and instruments are much more distinct leading to a vivid soundstage. It's a significant boost that genuinely gives new life to most of my digital audio collection.This external sound blaster fits comfortably on top of my desktop tower. It's simple, streamlined, matte black aesthetics don't stick out and the USB interface makes it extremely convenient to switch around from one computer to another. It's a great feature if you have a laptop and a desktop. The inputs and outputs are ample, allowing for example to run spdif in and out - helpful if you are using a cable box and an HTPC. A physical volume control knob is a nice addition for making quick adjustments regardless of what is running on your screen.Overall, I'm extremely happy with the Creative X-Fi HD USB audio system. I'd recommend it to anyone with an itch for convenient hi-fi processing. FYI, I used a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50's headphones for most of the listening and a pair of Sony MDR-v600's as well.

I was getting a lot of noise from my home theater server when playing music and video on my system. This device did cure the noise problem, but when I tried to load the software on my Windows 7 platform, it repeatedly failed with multiple error messages (MUI, 1010 to be specific). When consulting the Creative site, I found their support lacking. The error said to contact Creative tech support, but that is a joke, because there is very little information on their site (other than to stop all background apps and try loading it again) and no telephone number to call that I could find.I am giving them 2 stars for the hardware, because it did install and work (windows found the drivers), but the software gets 0 stars.

This is a small converter box that plugs into the computer's USB and converts an analog input from a magnetic phonograph cartrige or tape recorder and records it into a digital file. Sound quality in the record mode is Excellent. It costs a lot less then the Sound Blaster Live sound card I had in my last computer. I had a little trouble getting my computer recognize it's driver and Creative doesn't explain much about how it interacts with the Windows 7 Sound Controls, but once I figured it out, it's very easy to use. It also has some play back features I am looking foward to trying.

Hello - very big deal breaker question about this unit.I will use it mostly for music stored on PC - but on occasion I want to play a DVD movie on my PC as I have a 5.1 sound system on it.Logitech Z5500. It has an optical input - decodes Dolby Digital and DTS.So if I play a DVD on the PC, and set the audio on the disk to DD 5.1 (or DTS) can this unit pass the multichannel through to the Z5500, or is going to only pass a stereo signal, regardless of my disk setting? I am aware the analog in/out is 2 channel only.Has anyone used it for this purpose? If the unit can pass multichannel through to the Z 5500 then I will definitely get it.Thank you.

Ok....I just got one of these, because I wanted to upgrade from the x-fi surround 5.1 usb unit....i've seen some of the reviews some of you left for this newer unit...needless to say, i'm disappointed in how you decided to bad-mouth this soundcard....this is the best unit creative labs has ever released. when i first got it set up, and listened to a hq mp2 (not mp3) audio file @ 384/48, i was blown away....once i went into the settings, and tweaked them a little bit, i got goosebumps....i thought i was listening to an old B&O sound system, back in the early 80s! i'm running my laptop sound thru this to a POS no-name "home theater" amp made by a company called Regent.....the subwoofer is built-in to this thing....i have a pair of older Kenwood surround speakers hooked to it, too.....what a big difference this soundcard makes....worth every penny you put into it. I manageg to get this thru newegg for $81 + around $5 for 3-day shipping....and i'm a seriously happy camper.....i'll be using this for live soundboard recording on some upcoming shows, as well as some local DJ work....very impressive!!

This little thing is awesome. I use this as a dac from computer, to amp,and to book shelve speakers on my desktop. The sound controls are very versatile, you are able to fine tune your sound for your specific system, speakers, or music. The new sound I get is obviously better than my old sound card, but the clarity of voice, music, and action movies is way more enveloping. I sit back sometimes and say,"man this sounds good". For the sound blaster`s price, control options, and hook ups, its hard to beat. My amp is a tripath chip amp, but that only helps the sound a little. The sound blaster made my audiophile experience come to life..... at least for myself.

I decided to try this because it seemed to be near-audiophile quality and was not overly expensive for what it does, and I am not disappointed. Plugging my PC directly into my stereo without this sound card, or using my Android, never sounded good. Now my music is crystal-clear CD quality from my PC to my sound system via this unit. I use FLAC and AAC encoding (I try to avoid lesser-quality MP3, my opinion) and am very happy with the results. Also, using the included software setting "What U Hear" to record internet radio (or anything playing through the sound card) produces an accurate reproduction (I don't distribute).You should be aware that use of this USB sound card disables your on-board sound card (speakers & headphones) while it's in use, but this is so much better anyway. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone sitting on the fence -- for the price, it's a nice intro to DAC from your PC to stereo. My digital music really DOES sound good after all!

I admit I had to have my hubby set this up. I'm not saying that it's difficult to do, I'm just saying that tech is not my thing when it comes to set-up or fixing issues. Once he got it up and running I thought it did a great job. Our sound is much better, much fuller and intense. We set it up to play World Of Warcraft :) I'm sure most folks use it for something else, like music etc but we are all about Warcraft and Rift right now, so anything makes these games even better.

I didn't have to install anything, just plugged it in and it worked.I am using the USB sound card paired with Sennheiser HD555 Professional Headphones with Sound ChannelingThe sound is definitely superior compared to my laptop's sound card. It is more crisp, and has more volume. It is USB powered, so no extra cable clatter. Only thing to note is that it uses 1/4 inch sockets. so make sure your headphones and mic is compatible, or purchase an adapter.

This is an awesome sound card enclosing pretty realistic balance of highs and lows and soothing mids.I'm a demanding audiophile and I have to say this has beat many of my $500+ headphone amps. I have been recently using a tube amp and a opamp (OPA627, those serious listeners, you know what the OPA627 provides...) THE TRUTH IS, I can go on listening with these amps with my Shure SE535 for maybe 15-20 minutes and I get a headache. I am amazed at how detailed and stunning the sound from this X-Fi HD external DAC/AMP is, in some stylistic sense, it outperforms my other much pricier amps.The X-Fi HD does have a dedicated headphone AMP on board, and I have to say the sound is crystal yet vivid. I can listen with this thing for hours, music or movies. But when I hook up my other amps to the output of this X-Fi DAC/AMP, the headache comes back after 15-20 minutes at about the same volume.Honestly, with a 600ohm rated OPA627 dual chip amp rigged up with this, analytical listening may be a little more suited, but the experience may not be pleasing when listening casually. It is like being on a roller coaster for a LONG time...So for music and movie lovers, this X-Fi HD external DAC/AMP is really a great deal with no drawbacks I can think of unless you are using a 330ohm+ rated set. The noise ratio is better than my $1000+ AMP (you need good cables too).I took one star off for the lack of hardware EQ support (Nor default Software EQ). You need to setup third party EQ.Another star off for the line-in's uselessness. Phono-in pre-amp makes it almost impossible to hook up a non-phono device to this DAC correctly. The sound reproduced is pretty unpleasant.

I use my X-Fi HD USB as a headphone amplifier and so far it's been great. It has no problem driving my Etymotic ER-4Ps which are 100 ohms or my old 40 ohm Sony headphones. Unlike the headphone jack on my Macbook, my desktop and my AV receiver, there is absolutely no noise or static. At one time I thought I was hearing a slight hiss while using Etymotics, but to my surprise when I attempted to play something, I found that they weren't even plugged in. If it weren't for the little blue LED, you would have no idea that the thing is on while it's not playing. As for sound quality, there is a noticeable difference when compared to other sources. Sounds just seem a little bit clearer.I've tested it with my Mac (Snow leopard) and can confirm that it does work, although the volume/mute knob does not. OS X recognizes all it's inputs and outputs, and the all seem to work as they should. Ubuntu recognizes it as "USB Sound Blaster HD Analog Stereo" and it does (including the volume knob) work. However Ubuntu doesn't recognize that it has multiple inputs and outputs, but the headphone and microphone jacks do work. Windows sees it as a plug and play device so there's no reason to install the driver unless you want the fancy features it comes with, although the Crystalizer is the only feature I actually use.So anyway, if you're looking for a good USB headphone amp, this one is great.

It seems like the DAC on this guy is stuck at 48kHz. 44.1kHz material has audible sample rate conversion artifacts when listening to the RCAs or the headphone output, and 48kHz material has sample rate conversion artifacts when listening to the optical out. The optical out works great at 44.1kHz, and the analog works great at 48kHz. I wish you could change the internal clock like you can on the E-MU cards. This might be a driver issue, but software sample rate conversion definitely makes it nicer on the ears..

In this brief review, I am only going to comment on the sound quality of this device. I do not have the intention of using any of its other features (recording, software conversion, etc). With that being said, wow, this thing is a bargain! I mainly bought it to pair with my AKG 172/702 headphones and laptop, but I am also using it with my Swans M200mkIII speakers. All of those items already sounded great in themselves, but once I paired them with this dac(AKM4396VF btw), the boost in quality was a tad unbelievable. Some of the more popular expressions uttered when one upgrades a component in their audio chain are that you can hear things you never knew were there and that you would need to re-audition your music library...and those extend down to this dac. In fact, it's so good, I'd almost retire my DAC1 (whoops, thought it was April) . I have not tried the THX sound shaping algorithms yet, and I don't really plan to, but it is a nice bonus that they at least are the company behind them and not some generic technology. The headphone amp is indeed of good quality, but the higher ohm cans will still want some more power to sound their best(like my 702s).All in all, I am extemely impressed with this product. I bought it on a whim as a "try out" purchase(couldn't pass up the price), and it will now be staying in my system. The only gripe I have with it is that unlike its desktop specific brother (titanium), I can't upgrade/replace the op-amps. That drawback won't really be one to most of the people who shop this unit though. At this price (whatever price Amazon has it at when you read this), it deserves some serious consideration by the home audio enthusiast on a budget.Just so everyone understands, I am not trying to allude that this dac is on par with the upper echelon, but it does sound way better than it has any right to given its price/s.

My work PC has Vista and I listen to a decent pair of headphones at work (Sennheiser HD-555). My internal volume was weak (even at 100%). So I bought this! I didn't install any software - it was purely plug and play for me (and worked immediately). The volume (never turn it over 30%) and clarity is fantastic. I would not say audiophile but be honest - you're not one! lol. At least if you are married - you can't afford to be one. For the rest of us - this is perfect!

I use this soundcard because it can be fully controlled from the PC. It has only one knob, and the function of that know os overwritten by the software. Too bad there are no detailed specifications.I only have useed the line-in and line-out connectors. They seem to provide good linearity a good dynamic range with a SNR near 100 dB.

Using the analog rca outs, I have X-Fi going into a yamaha reciever (Yamaha actually pays attention to their headphone jacks). The sound, through foobar, is amazing. I have a toslink cable on the way to try the optical out later on. So far, the X-Fi is performing quite well. It beats my onboard real-tek sound hands down. My grados are finally coming to life with that low end punch with a good amp behind them. I cannot comment on the software package that comes on the cd. I hope I never have to use it.If your looking to bypass your onboard audio, and want to hook up your computer to a reciever, this is a must buy.

The overral product quality is good, but I was hoping a better power handling for big headphones like my Sony V700. The USB 2.0 port simply can't handle that kind of power, so you get distortion on high volume settings. I wish it had an external power supply to deliver more juice, because the internal components are high fidelity...

I found a whole host of problems with this device. On windows 7 the windows driver is all that is required to use this properly. Installing the driver is a bad idea as is any additional software that is provided. On XP I couldn't get this to work at all since they do not provide drivers anywhere (not even their webpage?) I'm so frustrated with this thing. If I could return it I would.
