Tried using it with Gentoo Linux. Not too much progress, despite advice available on the forums.Returning after several days of experimentation.

There are two paths One can take in evaluating this product: (1)As an easy way to add a DAC/Headphone amp to my Sony Vaio and Audio-Technica headphones that also is under $100 and easy to set up. By theses metrics, this is the best bang for the buck I can think of in quite some time.You can have this up and running in minutes, or take an hour to get one's "geek on". If you go "geek" bear in mind, the support is generic.(2)An equal of other audiophile DAC/amp options. While the X-Fi supports 24bit/96Hz and SPDIF, you should not toss your Benchmark or Wadia transport just yet.Bottom Line, this is a great little product that will have you grinning with its ability to make any laptop/headphone sound better

I have heard some patter in the reviews that this unit lacks an equalizer function and why should it since it's lower priced brother does. My take on it is that the hardware probably doesn't support it. For the better specs (audiophile specs) one gives up the equalizer.

Let me begin by saying that you *can* get sound to the headphone jack from USB. But that's it.If you want to use the optical input or phono input from a PS3 or dvd player, you are out of luck. There are NO switches on the case for you to select the input source (USB, optical, phono). You need to use the driver that comes with it. AND guess what? No MAC support.Basically you are left with a $20 USB sound card with 1 headphone and 1 mic output.Do NOT buy this product if you have a mac!ALSO: Don't bother plugging a PS3 to it using the optical input... It ONLY supports 48kHz audio, but most games are in 44.1kHz. I only game I have that is 48kHz is GT5 (and the XMB of the PS3). All other games will NOT have audio through this crap card.

This is a great product. The sound (surround) is outstanding.Easy to connect to the laptop and uses minimum space. I havealready spoken to a friend who is also going to purchase a unit

Works excellent as a dedicated sound card/amp for my headphones. I couldn't find anything better for the price that would have the features this little box does. No need to unplug my speakers to plug in my headphones (I tried using the front I/O panel that comes with the X-FI Platinum and the sound is just not very good) and I love having separate volume control for my speakers and my headphones. I use it mostly for gaming and some movie/tv show watching. The sound quality is great, my AH-D2000s sound fantastic. Thumbs up for the X-Fi HD USB.

Where do I begin? I bought this to copy vinyl reords. Supposedly you can connect your turntable directly to the device. THAT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Then the software doesn't work. When you hit Save, IT DOESN'T SAVE!!!!!! And there are no default settings on how to save music. You have to go through all the time to find your music folder again and again!!!!!!!! And the noise reduction software that comes with it is awful!!!!!!!!!!About the only way this product is useful is1. Pass the signal through an amp, do not connect turntable directly.2. Do not use their software to record music, because it won't!!!!!3. Do not use their software for noise reduction. Use Clickrepair.

I purchased this for digital music playback from my computer and am only rating it in this one area since that's my primary use. The DAC for music playback in this box must be pretty good because sound quality for music playback is fantastic. I am not using typical cheap computer speakers but Definitive Technology Mythos Gem speakers and a Harman Kardon receiver. I am hearing things I hadn't heard before in the music. If you want something for music playback from your computer through nice speakers this will do the job. I also liked all the connection options.

* Paid around $55 after rebate locally* Buy it to use with Sennheiser 555 on my HP Probook 6545B + There is not much improvement comparing to built-in IDT High Definition Audio when listening to classical music ...

In few words, it's way better than previous X-FI and also very convenient if you have laptop or netbooks. I'm using it with Sennheiser HD 555 and it sounds GREAT!!I would recommend it! And i'm not using the software from Creative yet (can't download it from the web site, and my netbook don't have cd player).
