I see quite a few negative reviews here from frustrated customers, but the truth is that this isn't a bad router. I've set these up for plenty of users and they've had no issues. You just need to know what's inside and how to configure it, and as an electrical engineer who specializes in wireless, I can tell you about this. This router -- unlike most Linksys routers -- uses an Atheros SoC (system-on-chip). (Most Linksys routers use Broadcom chips.) This means that it has some quirks that are peculiar to Atheros. For example, most Atheros-based devices are well known to have what's called the "stuck beacon" problem in their internal software. The problem is not due to overheating, as is speculated in some of the reviews here, but it can be triggered by heavy network loading or noise on the airwaves. Without going into too much technical detail, this is a problem that happens when the router gets busy or encounters noise and misses its chance to send a "beacon" signal advertising its existence. If it doesn't get to send the beacon by the time it's due to send another, it sends out an invalid beacon that doesn't conform to the Wi-Fi standard. This can cause everything on the wireless network to disconnect abruptly.Atheros should have fixed this problem long ago, but for some reason its developers do not seem to want to admit to the problem. And because Atheros insists upon providing the low-level code that runs the chips only in canned binary form (they call it a "hardware abstraction layer," or HAL) to most equipment manufacturers, and the code is difficult to understand and modify even if you have it, the majority of equipment makers who use Atheros chipsets have been unable to fix this bug themselves. My advice for trouble-free operation is as follows. First, don't use the included setup disk, despite the stickers that say "Run CD First." All it will do is put annoying software that you don't want or need on your computer. Instead, configure the router via its internal Web interface. Update to the latest firmware and then set the beacon interval to a large value (1000 milliseconds or more) so that the chances of the "stuck beacon" bug cropping up are virtually nil. Also, set the router to use only ordinary 802.11b and 802.11g (Mixed B-G) rather than the nonstandard 802.11 "pre-n" that it implements. You won't see a slowdown (802.11g is faster than any Web site) and you won't see other odd problems. It also helps to set the router to use WPA encryption (only slightly less secure than WPA2) and use a long, non-guessable password. When you select WPA, the firmware will turn off some "features" that might be troublesome and you'll have a nice, stable network. Yes, it'll be 802.11b/g, but it'll be solid as a rock and very compatible. With these settings, it will work just fine with a MacBook, an iPad or a Kindle and will not trigger the WEP 802.1x authentication bug in Windows XP.If you really thirst after true 802.11n, get an E-1000 or E-1200. But you won't see any meaningful difference in speed or range in normal use.By the way, there are a few Linksys models you really SHOULD avoid: those based on Ralink chipsets, such as the WRT100 and WRT110. These now-discontinued models are hopelessly defective and will give you nothing but grief. Ralink chips aren't inherently bad, but Linksys products based on them have been uniformly awful.

I have three of these installed at home, and a half-dozen installed at various other locations where a no-downtime wireless signal is a must. Two of mine are the 802.11a/g; the other is just 802.11g.I've never had downtime as a result of these. Mine are all hooked into a 3524XL POE switch. As long as the switch is running, these AP's just don't stop. Setup can be complicated, but in typical Cisco fashion, is feature-rich.Pros:Outdoor-safeStrong physical construction -- these are in a case made of metal, not cheap plastic.Wide antenna selection-- you can get 7 or 11dbi antennas here at Amazon or eBay for $5 apiece, or yaqui or parabolics if that's more your gameUltimate in reliability. Never had to reboot theseRoaming works out-of-the-box.Lots of configuration options, including crypto, VLAN, and QoSCan run A antennas at 5GHz, which keeps the interference downDedicated AP -- no messing with DHCP or other networking functionality best handled by another dedicated deviceCons:Setup can be a bit of a pain if you're not well-versed in IOSUpgrade can be equally problematic, as can reset to factory default(be sure to have a TFTP server handy)No MIMOBrowser config is super-slowRight now, you can snag these for $20 apiece in the secondary market. If you don't mind 802.11g speeds (and really, you don't need 802.11n unless you're slinging a lot of data around), these will never let you down.

Ok, so there are a lot of people that simply hate and detest this router. I read those reviews, and you know what...THEY WERE RIGHT!But it's not really the router's fault. If you look at the page where they display this router, they specifically tell you that it's nowhere near being a fast, high speed, top of the line router (there's a display towards the bottom of the page that says that it has speed is 150 mb/s and that the coverage is between good and strong). What they don't tell you is that what coverage means is that its antenna is fairly weak!I have other routers that, when placed in the basement of my house, will cover the entire first floor with adequate signal strength. This router gives me only 3 bars, and I'm only outside of the room and on the first landing going up to the first floor! When I get to the first floor, if I have line of sight, I'm good! If ANYTHING else gets in the way, there is no signal to be found!I have a lot of other, older routers (both Linksys & AVM), and they all work about the same. This router was a big let down for me. So I will be returning this router in the morning, and then ordering another E4200v2 router (probably from Amazon, again) to set up my wireless repeater. If you do decide to purchase this router, please be sure that you're living in something like a studio apartment. This router should be adequate for anyone that doesn't want their signal strength to be picked up in a large area. So one of the more positive things that I can say about it is that it will provide a smaller than usual footprint, for a bargain basement price. So from a security point of view, that's actually not a bad side effect to have. Also, you might want to read Mr. Glass' review, on how to configure it for problems due to the on-board chipset. I feel that he has some good tips and good information in his 5-star review of this product.

Years ago I was living with a roommate and we had the WRT54G wireless router. Never had a problem. When I moved I got a $20 D-Link router and also never had a problem. Then we got 2 Acer Laptops (2 different models) and one of them was not compatible with the D-Link. So I went to get a Linksys because I loved Linksys I even took Cisco classes in College, that's how much respect I had for Cisco! Got to the store and saw the WRT54G but silly me decided to upgrade to a better model and got the WRT100. I should have gotten the WRT54G because I am sure I would still be a happy camper. After we moved all my wireless devices started connecting randomly to my neighbors Belkin router which has a very low signal. It was odd but whenever I noticed I would just switch back to my network. Then I started working from home so I decided to get a new Desktop with Win 7 and there were some problems with installing the WRT100. I called linksys since the installation CD was not compatible with Win7 and asked the lady where I can find the installation wizard for download on their website so that I can set up the router on my Win7 PC. The lady told me that my warranty was up but I can pay $60 for support! WTFreak I just wanted to know where to download the Installation Wizard since I could not find it on their website! Anyway. If I am gonna spend $60 for someone to provide me with a link to a download site I rather go and buy a new router and still save a few bucks. I was new to Win7 so I didn't know how compatibility would be as far as set up CD's.I went to Walmart in hope to find the WRT54 for Win7. But THEY WERE ALL GONE!! NO MORE!!! Ok so I looked at the few routers they had and the only one they had that was Win7 compatible was THIS PIECE OF JUNK! It was pretty so I got it despite being disappointed in Linksys customer support. I am usually good with computers since I am an IT major in College so I was hoping I would not have to call them again anyway.I had this POS for about 6 month now. It worked great at first then it started to disconnect randomly throughout the day. Our most spoken sentences in this house are: "Is your internet slow too?", "Is your internet still working?", "Are you on our internet or on Belkin?" (remember the Belkin is one of our neighbors unsecured internet connection with very low signal, which is often still faster than my own connection with all bars on), "Can you please reset the router?", "Are you doing anything important because I am about to reset the router!". So several times throughout the day I have to unplug the piece of junk to get a connection faster than dial-up or a connection at all. Every now and then I have to restart my laptop cause the constant drops of connection mess up my wireless card in my Laptop. I even bought a Linksys USB Wireless adapter to see if there were compatibility issues with my Laptops wireless card and the router, but NOPE same problem! Doesn't even work with their own junk! It even slows down the connection to my hard wired Desktop, but at least it stays connected, just often slower then molasses!I also find it very sad that people got charged another $10 to get technical support. What kind of business is that??? Thy create this totally worthless piece of junk and then charge people to get it to work. Shame on YOU Cisco!!! And shame on you for trying to charge a long term customer $60 for getting a simple link to one of your downloads!!!!!Please don't even think twice about buying this. Yes there are a few that work fine I guess, but look at all of these bad reviews and we are all having the same problem. Its not user error. Please go find a different one. I thought I had gotten a lemon but now I know 99% of these routers are lemons so I will go this week and get me a new one and it will not be a Cisco router. As a matter of fact I will never buy a Cisco product again!

I bought this router because I WAS a good fan of Cisco in the past and have had overall good results with them, this is a complete exception to that. This router has a maximum range of around 20ft before it just gets so slow you can't use it. I only use this with Ethernet ports now to wire my computers up now, which totally defeats the purpose of it. Using the Ethernet ports on the back works well but was what i was trying to avoid by buying this. I am completely unsatisfied with the wireless capability but at least wired works well enough on it.

I guess alot of people had trouble with theirs but mine has always worked fine. It's alot faster surfing with this "N" router compared to the "G" router I had before and it was easy to setup with the included Network Magic CD. I did uninstall the Network Magic after the installation setup because of all the "buy full version" pop-up windows but that's no big deal it doesn't have to be installed for the router to work. I have it connected to a WebStar cable modem and we have several computers, a tablet, smart phones, and a DVD player connecting to it wirelessly with no problems at all. I highly recommend the Linksys WRT120N wireless router.

I used a Linksys router happily for many years. Last year it seemed to start to go South, and I wanted to upgrade to a N router anyway. So, I bought another Linksys router from Sam's Club. I noticed it also had the Cisco name on it.That should have clued me that something was very different. It's been a POS from the day I bought it. It continuously dropped the wifi and had to be reset. Just for fun, it would occasionally also drop the LAN, and for even more hilarity, it would sometimes dump all my settings and reset to the factory defaults. A cumulative 1/2 day with "Bob" and "Mike" in Bhopal, and several firmware reflashings helped, but did not completely fix the problems. The 3rd Level Tech basically told me "It sucks to be you" as the warranty had expired while I was screwing with "Bob" and "Mike". Lately, I've noticed the router now has the range of a thrown spit wad. If I wasn't so damn cheap and busy, I'd buy a non-Cisco router and take a 3 pound mal to this abortion. I give the router a two star [Update: zero star] review because, with all the work, it has barely crawled above the Line of Suck.Due to their cheap equipment and ####-poor Customer Service, I'll never buy Cisco again. May they fly United.[Update] That's it, I'm done with this POS and cr@ptastic company. The WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)standard has a security flaw which allows hackers to quickly gain access to a router. The best fix is to simply turn off WPS, which works with most routers. Think Cisco did it right? You obviously don't have a Cisco router. Turning off WPS does absolutely nothing on a Cisco router, the security hole remains. Cisco's cynical recommendation: turn off the wireless networking completely! They'll have a firmware fix in a couple of months... or not. Until then, your router is completely vulnerable.I'm done. I'm immediately buying a new non-Cisco router, probably a Medialink. Then I'm going to take the 120 out on the stoop and beat the Cisco out of it.

I'm a great fan of Linksys wireless routers. I have a closet full of older WRT54G models, whose reliability and versatility enticed me to continue buying Linksys. However this model, WRT120N, is without question the crappiest piece of hardware I have ever owned. It doesn't support raw 256-bit WPA keys, it can't route Bonjour multicast packets. It needs to be rebooted after handling 500G-1TB of traffic. For the past several months I thought my new ISP was flaky, because every WAN TCP connection would be disconnected after a few hours. Turns out it was the WRT120N. It gets poor throughput over wireless, and the range is short and unreliable. I loathe this router.

I own a small computer and network company and have replaced several of these routers for customers. The router is unstable and will quit working frequently. Last week I had my trusty wrt54g die after a power outage at my house, when the power came back on a wired device (nettalk) must have allowed a surge into the router and killed it. I did not have any other wireless routers in stock at my business and with kids needing internet for school I was forced to go to wally world to pick up a router. The only thing they had in stock was a belkin and this linksys. I chose the linksys. (a tough choice, but the belkins have been even more problematic with Time Warner)I installed the router through the web interface using the same settings as my dead router and it went smoothly. I updated the firmware and reconnected all of my devices things worked well for a short while. When the family began using the internet the wireless quit working and I had to reset the router. It needs reset (power on and off) at least twice a day and it must be reset every morning when we wake up before it will work.If I didn't need this quickly I would not have purchased this. Three days later I received my stock of WRT54GL routers and also a TP-LINK. I kept the WRT120N hooked up for four more days because I wanted to try some things to make it stable and do some in house testing. I never was able to get it to be stable. I replaced it with a new WRT54GL and it worked flawlessly for three days, after three days I installed the TP-LINK router to test and it has worked flawlessly, the range is better on the TP-Link also. The WRT120N went back to walmart after I had a chance to verify that this router was as bad as I had suspected.

I bought this router some months ago and I stopped using it because my DSL company gave me a Modem/Router which was pretty decent, though it has the shortest range I've ever seen on any router. After some time my girlfriend wanted to start using her laptop on a different room sometimes so I had to plug the WRT120n back in.In a few words, this router is the worst router I've ever seen. I thought at first that my unit in particular was defective, but reading reviews here and on other sites, my problems are the same as everybody else's. If you want this router to work, you have to tweak it so much that you end up with a non 802.11n, non WPA2 and in my case, with the firewall disabled. After disabling all those features the router is usable, though it still fails and I have to restart it almost every week. If this was a 802.11g router from 7 years ago which didn't have the option of using WPA2 and an integrated firewall, I would give it 2 stars, because even though it fails, it's not THAT bad.

I've had 3 or 4 Linksys routers total, and all had issues with completely dropping the wireless signal at random times, and needing to be reset. This newest one is even worse, now dropping the signal about once every other day. (Like with the others, it started out better, and gradually got worse. I've had this one for maybe a year or so, now.) Luckily, I don't use the wireless signal for my main work.Other than that, the signal only reaches the back of my average-sized American house intermittently (about 50ft distance), and we get no signal at all in the backyard. We could move the router to the center of the house, to reach at least the back wall, but we currently hard-wire it to 4 things, which we don't want to move. (We'd have to re-drill and move *all* the CAT-5 cables in the house.)I WOULD buy routers from other companies, but every time I need a new one, I read the reviews, and they're all around the same level of trash.

This router most definitely does not live up to its name.I chose it from a variety of routers because of its specs, and because Linksys is known to produce good routers. This one, however, seems to be "Cisco-Linksys", and something went wrong there. As soon as I plugged it in, I had internet connection. Nonetheless over the days my connection became intermitent, on and off all the time. I set up DHCP configuration, to give you an IP automatically. It does not work, I had to set up everything manually, something only one out of 20 people knows how to do. Especially annoying seeing as DHCP is enabled. Nothing is auto, all has to be done by hand. Signal is OK, but then again my house isn't all that big, and when I go outside, signal drops so I wouldn't recommend it for a building with several floors. Whenever friends come over I give them the password and none of them can connect, the router just rejects connections. Every now and then it doesn't even broadcast, it just says Connection Timeout. My roommate lost the receipt and I'm not going to fight over the phone for this junk. I'll go buy something else tomorrow (it's been one-two weeks with this Linksys), be it a Belkin or a proper Linksys router. They say if something is not broken don't try to fix it. I can see how my old Belkin was great. I end up having to tinker around the configuration page of this Linksys every day, I tried every configuration and none works normally.Save yourself the trouble and buy a different router. This one does not connect properly, has low signal through floors, and the configuration doesn't even work right. Transmission rates are good, I get 1040 kb/s from my 10MB connection though. Useless however when it doesn't even let me make use of it!

I bought this item from Sam's Club. I had a prior dlink router (dir-615), which worked well, but the only problem was that I had bought one of those Nettalk Duos to replace my Vonage. I couldn't get the Nettalk to work w/ the dlink router. The setup was easy, but then within a couple weeks, I started having problems. I would lose either the internet connection, or there would be a message on my devices to reenter the router pw. Here is my setup: linksys cable modem to linksys router (WRT120N). From the router, I have the Nettalk Duo coming out of port 3. There are 3 laptops in my network that I connect wirelessly. I have a HP wireless printer, and I use my iPhone to connect to the wireless system.I tried updating the firmware (1.0.04) but was unsuccessful no matter how much I tried. I reconfigured the system several times. I could get a stable internet connection for at most 2 weeks, but then all my computers can connect to the wireless, but there was no internet connection. By resetting the cable modem, powering down the router, modem and computer, I could reestablish internet connectivity, but it is an incredible pain. It seems that every week or so, I have to do this. There are times that from my iphone, I would have to reenter the wireless password. When I'd enter it, I could not get the wireless to connect. I would then have to power cycle the router, and then it would be fine. All of this is incredibly frustrating.Today, after losing internet connection again, I downloaded the firmware upgrade from the Linksys website, and was finally able to upgrade the firmware to 1.0.05. I don't know if the problems will be resolved. We'll have to see. If I lose connection again, this is item is going back to Sam's and I'll have to try another. I never had these problems with the dlink router. When everything is connected, I get an excellent, fast connection. It's the episodic drops in internet connection that give this item a low rating.Update 3/12/11:After upgrading the firmware to 1.0.05, the router is working much better, and I haven't yet had to reset the router/modem. However, I connect my iPhone 3G to the wireless, and everynow and then, I get the message that it could not connect to my network, or that my password is incorrect. If I powercycle the router, I can reconnect. For whatever reason, my laptops maintain connection to the network. I don't know if this is a problem w/ the iPhone or the router. Anyways, I'll raise my rating from a 2 stars to 4 stars.

Had other linksys products, but this one simply doesnt worth the investment, there are tricks to make it work however there are other products around without such issues, with this device you can expect frequent disconnections, and its settings are very limited ( it doesnt even allow mac encapsulation routing and as PPPoE doesnt allow to use a static ip either) as modem, and as router is also limited compared to linksys routers.

I've installed hundreds of routers and this router is the worst I've ever come across it has done nothing but lock up and become unusable over and over and over again every single day. sometimes you can change the channel and it might work for a while but then it just stops again I've never seen such a big piece of junk I don't only give bad reviews but I hope nobody else bothers to buy one of these paper weights.

Hey, it's not all bad with this router. The worst case scenario is that the router would blow up in my face as I'm plugging it in. And that didn't happen, so this router deserves at least one star because it didn't kill me. As far as fulfilling it's duties as a router, save your money, and go outside, pick up a rock, and use that as a router. The rock will have more features, be more reliable, and will make you feel a lot less guilty for the purchase. So when you inevitably have to replace your faulty router, you aren't out fifty bucks or whatever this piece of shite costs.

I've been using this router for over 9 months now, and it is a total headache!Even though it has great speed (802.11n) and range, it ALWAYS disconnects the Internet if the router is idle for a few minutes. And I know is the router, because when I unplug it and put the Internet directly to the PC, it never gets disconnected. As soon as I use the router, it keeps disconnecting me. To make things worst, to restore the Internet back, I HAVE to unplug the electricity (if I unplug only the LAN cable and plug it back, it won't work), wait for 10 seconds, and plug the electricity back, every 10-15 minutes.I am not going to say I am an expert at networks, but I know how to configure it. I hate using DHCP because when a problem happens with the network, I know who is causing it by its IP, so that is why I assign to each of my devices a specific IP. I also configure the Internet IP, the Mask, the Gateway and the DNS manually to avoid any problems and to verify the router is not getting any addresses wrong, but it's no use; it always disconnects. I even try to let the router pull the configuration from the modem, but nothing works. It's only the router disconnecting itself no no apparent reason. So please, do not buy this router, look for something better. It is not worth your time to consider it.

I bought this as a replacement for an aging wrt54. This was a terrible decision. I cannot get this router to function for more than 2 hours at a time without dropping wifi connections. I can updated the firmware, tried multiple "fixes", but nothing will make this router function properly. If you are looking for a router that can handle wifi for more than a few hours, don't buy this one!

I was previously a service technician for a major US Cable company and ran into many of these units while out in the field, they are absolute crap. When these first came out several of our guys purchased them for use in their own homes and we found out very quickly they are extremely problematic. I saw Amazon selling these a while back for $14.99, ok seriously- an r-router for 15 bucks? I was never in a position to recommend wireless routers by the company, but the only router I said to stay away from is this one. All the negative reviews about this item are 100% accurate- they suck!

I have to say this thing is the worst router in the world. I got it to replace an old Belkin wireless G that i had about 5 years. This thing is a pain to set up. I got it pretty easy on my desktop running with windowes 7, but my notebook with vista is a no go. To connect that to the internet i have to use toold cat 5 cable. When i unplug that cable the internet is nowhere to be found. Spent over 5 hours messing with this trash and still a no go. The old droidis also a no go. The droid can see it but cant connect for some reason. Do yourself a favor and stay away froim this

Let me preface my review by saying that I'm very computer literate. I stay up to date on hardware, read reviews, fix my friends' computers, and even build desktops for friends. I know how to troubleshoot and fix things when they go wrong. I'm not going to get into all the technical reasons why this router isn't a good one. I'll merely mention my experiences. That being said, this router is junk. I bought one, set it up and had it work fine for a month or so. Every so often after that first month I'd use my computer at night, go to sleep and wake up the the next morning to find that I wasn't connected to the internet anymore. Odd. I tried resetting it and messing with the settings and would eventually get it to work. I had to do this quite a few times over the course of 3 months until it one day stopped connecting to the internet altogether. I could connect to the internet fine via an ethernet cable and the modem (so the modem and the ethernet cable from the modem were not the problem), but I was unable to connect to the internet with this router. I couldn't connect via wireless or wired connection (using another ethernet cable that I know works) on either of my 2 computers. This means that the modem and ethernet cables were fine, and the problem was not with a wireless card or ethernet port on either of my computers. The problem was the router. Nothing I did could get it to connect.I returned it and got another one, thinking maybe I got a bad unit. Nope. I exchanged the one I described above about 3 weeks ago. I set up the new one and had it work just fine for these 3 weeks. I woke up this morning to see that I wasn't connected to the internet anymore. I played with the settings, and still couldn't get it to connect. I'm currently using a wired connection with my CM100 modem, which has worked solidly since I bought it, I might add. I'm going to return this router to the store and get a different one. I'm sick of having to troubleshoot this model. A wireless router is meant to be configured and then left on. A good one requires no maintenance and won't drop connections. It will sit there and broadcast its signal. They're not meant to be turned on and off all the time. My apartment isn't hot, electricity hasn't been surging, and there are no other factors I can think of that would cause only this router (and not my modem) to fail randomly except that it's a piece of junk.2 out of 2 failed. That means it's time to get something else. Please save yourself the headache of trying to troubleshoot one of these. WRT120N is trash, end of story.Update 7-12-12: I went through about 6 of these before switching to a netgear. Avoid this model at all costs.

I have had this router twice now. It lasts just long enough to run out of the warranty and then it breaks. While a year may be a decent run, for the typical retail price of it, not worth it. Cheaper routers that are expected to last only a year work just the same. For a company that claims to be the leader in telecommunications, they have a long way to go before their product can be called quality.

If there was a no star rating to give this worthless piece of junk I would give it. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP ROUTER! I have had nothing but problems with it since I bought in January this year. Cisco's tech support sucks as well. Their inept tech support agents kept trying to tell me it was my ISP that was messing up but it wasn't them. I'll never buy another Cisco/Linksys router again. This sucker kept losing my IP address every bloody hour! I was also unplugging the power to it and letting it sit for a minute or two. Sometimes that worked but most times I had to totally reboot my computer in order to get a signal back. The sucker is now sitting in pieces due to the fact that I took malicious joy in smashing it to bits with a hammer! I tried to hold out till January to get another one but the aggravation was not worth it. If I need to use my laptop instead of my desktop I'll just have to hardwire the laptop into the modem. Any body know of a decent non-Linksys router to get????

Hey guys! Like many of you, I too had problems connecting to my wifi. Every time I put in my password it would say connection timeout. Well, after reseting and reinstalling the router I decided to actually read and not flash through the quick steps. After doing so, my internet was connected instantaneously. If you have not already done so, please follow these steps:1) Follow all of the given technical steps to plug in cords and etc as the setup says, but read closely. This may be the problem for many of you...2) You will be given a password: admin, change it to something you can remember3) You will be given a network name: linksys, change it to something you can remember4) You will be given a SECURITY KEY (that random set of numbers and letters), change this to something that will be easy to remember because this is the ACTUAL PASSWORD that you will need in order to log onto your wifi.My problem was that I kept putting in the password from the first password change, instead of the numbers given. The number section is your SECURITY KEY AKA PASSWORD to your wifi network. The first password is simply your router password in case you need to ever make any changes.Hope this helps guys! If you did not understand I will be more than willing to go over it for you in more detail.
