Sharpness on this is unreal, bokeh is okay but it's 35mm so you're not going to get a crazy buttery smooth background. Macro capabilities are cool. I probably wont use them that much but it's a great portrait lens and just fun for all around shooting.

I bought this lens as both an all around and macro (and because the price was right for an RF lens). So far I'm very pleased.
I also own the 24-105 lens which is a great walk around, but over the years I've found myself shooting at 35mm more often than not and the RF 35 is smaller, making it less noticeable than either the zoom or the excellent RF 50. The fairly wide bottom aperture and macro capability are bonuses.
The lens is fast focusing and even found focus on a very foggy winter morning (see photo) when other lenses I've owned would have "hunted" unsuccessfully. I didn't have to switch to manual focus to get the shot. Color rendition and saturation are as I've come to expect from all Canon lenses and the bokeh was pleasing if not spectacular. Of course, as you'd expect, it's not the best choice for a portrait lens, but plenty good enough for casual pictures of friends and family.
I'm looking forward to using the lens through the upcoming holidays and will update this review with any additional information as the lens reveals its merits and shortcomings.
UPDATE: After using the lens for a couple of months I continue to feel that it can't be beat for visual acuity, weight, balance, fast focus and size. I've added a couple of images to give an idea of low light performance and "everyday" family shots (in this case, of our dog opening her present).

Absolutely killer lens. It doesn’t have a red ring on it, but it takes killer pictures. I have a 40mm 2.8 and nifty fifty. They will now sit in my bag. This is my ultimate travel lens. It’s on my EOS R right now on my trip to Italy.

This lens surpassed my expectations in build quality, image quality, and versatility. I wanted an all-rounder prime lens for the EOS R when I didn’t need my 5DIV and L-Series lenses. The 35mm f1.8 IS STM RF lens, IMO, is the unsung hero of the EOS R release. It’s IS, macro, f/1.8 aperture, and 35mm angle of view make this a great all-rounder lenses. It’s also much lighter than my L-series lenses saving my back. I do wish it was weather-sealed though.

I got this lens to be a lightweight "walkaround" prime for my EOS RP.
It was small and light, especially compared to the RF 24-105, but that's about the only good thing I can say. Build quality, focusing speed, and focusing noise (for stills) was just so-so. I returned it after a couple of weeks. I guess what I really wanted was an RF pancake lens, like the 40mm STM. Of course, YMMV
P.S. I totally don't get the point of a 35mm macro lens on a full-frame camera. A close focusing 35mm, yes. But, bugs and flowers?? Furthermore, the EF version of this lens has a handy little ring light built in. Why take that away?

If you own an EOS R or RP, you know that this is the only RF lens under $500, at least for now. The other RF lenses are breathtakingly expensive for an amateur enthusiast photographer. What's so great about this lens is that is exhibits L-glass quality without the L-glass price. There is modest vignetting in the corners at f1.8, but it disappears by 2.8, and the camera can correct it automatically. The images are razor sharp, even at 1.8, across the entire image. Autofocus is smooth and silent. Image stabilization is effective and silent. To top it off, you also get the control ring function. 35mm is close to an ideal, general purpose, walking around focal length. This lens is an absolute no-brainer. This lens deserves a red ring. No kidding. If you want to have a bit of fun, buy some 1/16" red stripe tape and give your new lens a visual upgrade.

Good lens for the price. I already had the kit Rf lens and was looking for another. Instead of spending 2000 on one of the l lens I decided to go with this lens and it does not disappoint on image quality at all. The only issue I’ve found is that when shooting macro it sometimes has a hard time focusing on the closest object and usually need to focus on my hand first before it will focus on the closest object. All the pictures are with the lens at f1.8 and have been edited with Lightroom

This is the second lens I've purchased for my EOS RP. I've wanted a dedicated macro lens for a very long time and after switching to mirrorless I finally decided to pick one up. I honestly wanted a longer focal length than 35mm for greater magnification and further separation from the subject. I'm not disappointed with the 35mm focal length though as it does a great job of doubling as a good "all-around" lens. It's very small and light and makes the EOS RP feel far more balanced than the 24-105 f/4. I really like the size.
The lens has a maximum aperture of f/1.8 which is pretty darn fast. Yes, there are faster prime lenses out there but do you REALLY need an f/1.2 or f/0.95? REALLY? Especially for macro work the depth of field is already razor thin (a matter of millimeters between in-focus and out-of-focus) at the minimum focusing distance and maximum aperture. Realistically, if you are going to be shooting macro at close to the minimum focusing distance you'll likely be stopping down anyway. The image stabilization is a very welcome addition and I find it to be very effective.
The focus system is the only reason I docked a star on this otherwise phenomenal lens. I shoot exclusively stills and do not use any video features so the smoothness of quietness of an STM motor is not terribly valuable to me. I'd rather have a Nano USM motor for faster and snappier focus. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the focus system; it's great, I'm just spoiled by USM. I've shot with both autofocus and manual focus. Both are great but for close macro work I think manual focus is going to be easier to "nail" if you have the time. The focus ring is smooth and pretty easy to grip. I do wish it was another quarter-inch wider though. I grabbed the control ring a few times by accident.
Image quality is better than you might expect for a lens at this price point. I think it's perfectly sharp across the frame. There is noticeable barrel distortion and vignetting at the widest apertures but it cleans up a lot when stopped down around f/4. But it's also super easily corrected in post, especially with Adobe's excellent lens correction profiles.
Build quality is not quite L-quality but it's close. The only thing that really makes me think this isn't an L-lens is the lack of a red ring, really. I think they could have stuck a red ring on the front of this lens and nobody would say it wasn't deserving of the "L". Well, maybe if it had a Nano USM motor.

I bought this lens and the RF 24-105mm F/4 L IS USM so I would have two native lenses for my EOS R. This lens performs very well, makes tack sharp images and can be dual purpose as it has Macro capabilities as well as making for a great street photography lens! I also love that it's the same price but .2 wider aperture than the Canon EF 35mm F/2 IS USM.

First off, I recommend this lens for any RF mount camera. Its a great walk around lens and its macro focus makes it quite useful to get unexpected closeups. I also own an ef 30mm f2 and have compared them on my EOS R. The RF 30mm F1.8 IS is as good or better in ever aspect but one. Noise. While this lens has a STM motor, you can her the lens searching noticeably while focusing. I don't think its the motor itself, but the inners moving. Might have to do with the IS, I don't know. Its not so bad that I think I got a lemon. I was just expecting it to be very quiet and its not.
Its not L glass but it also doesn't cost like L glass either. The noise keeps it from a 5 start mark. I would purchase again from this seller.

I've always been told that photography is all about the skill instead of the gear, but the quality of my photos has dramatically improved since getting this lens.
Before buying, keep in mind that this lens is an RF lens and currently only works with the EOS R, EOS RP, EOS R5, and EOS R6. There is also no adapter to use this on EF cameras. This review is of me shooting on an EOS RP.
Overall, I can say without a doubt that this is the best lens I have ever owned.
I primarily do portrait photography, but I started to get into macro photography because of this lens.
The minimum focusing distance lets you get super close to what you are shooting.
The high aperture does a really good job of making the photo feel like you are really up close and also allows you to shoot at much higher shutter speeds to get really sharp details of moving insect wings without sacrificing light quality.
The lens is also extremely small and compact. It is perfect for toting around all day if you are at a zoo or gardens.
This lens has Canon's new control ring on it that allows you to control certain settings assigned by going into your camera's menu. The only downside for this lens is that, even though I have owned it for weeks and have shot over 2000 photos with it, if you were to hand it to me right now, I couldn't tell you which was the control ring and which was the focusing ring. I've had to disable the control ring because I keep accidentally changing the setting assigned to it.
That being said, the auto focus is extraordinary on this lens. It is incredible how fast it can go from being focused for photographing a group of people 20 feet away to focusing in on a beetle less than an inch long half a foot away.
Overall, if you own an RF camera, I believe you should have one of these on hand just because of the versatility.

Trusty 50mm lens from Canon for the mirrorless body. Most affordable one. Just received it today (12/30/2020) and love it already. I have a Canon EOS RP, and with the lens, this is the most lightweight and portable setup I have ever had with a full frame camera.
Only have had the lens for a few hours but it looks very similar to the EF version (which I love) and seems to function great. Best lens for the price with the Canon mirrorless system.
The other RF lens I have is the 35mm F1.8 STM IS. Love that lens as well. It appears that both of these lenses focus well for both photo and video, and most importantly to me, they are both quiet for video. I use the RP for photography and family videography.
Highly recommended. Please keep making more affordable RF lenses, Canon. Thank you!

This RF lens perfect as a first lens for your R-Series DSLR. It's small, the perfect focal length for walking around, and it has built in image stabilization. Unfortunately I have an R6 which has stabilization built in and as soon as I got my RF to EF adapter, which was as rare as getting a picture of Big Foot, I was able to use my other lenses and this guy became redundant. I wanted it to wow me but it's just so so. I definitely recommend it if you're thinking about the R or the RP. That would be a great combination.

I love this lens and it pretty much stays attached to my EOS R about 90% of the time. Very sharp photos, good contrast, and the macro ability is really nice to have. I also shoot a lot of video and the IS is great for that (between the IS and moderate digital IS, the video is very stable). If this is the level of quality we can come to expect for the “budget friendly” RF glass, I’m excited to try out the other non-L offerings. Definitely a no-brainer if you’re tired of using adapters.

Canon produces some quality non-L prime lenses...and this is one of the best. The fact that it's fast at f/1.8 and has imagine stabilization is a major plus. It's also light and compact, which makes for a small package when paired with either the R or RP. More importantly, it's sharp, even wide open, with a minimum of distortion. Like most fast primes , it does suffer a little bit if chromatic aberration but this easily corrected and actually far less that which I've experienced in more expensive lenses. If you have a Canon R body, this lens is a must have.
