I bought this lens and the RF 24-105mm F/4 L IS USM so I would have two native lenses for my EOS R. This lens performs very well, makes tack sharp images and can be dual purpose as it has Macro capabilities as well as making for a great street photography lens! I also love that it's the same price but .2 wider aperture than the Canon EF 35mm F/2 IS USM.

First off, I recommend this lens for any RF mount camera. Its a great walk around lens and its macro focus makes it quite useful to get unexpected closeups. I also own an ef 30mm f2 and have compared them on my EOS R. The RF 30mm F1.8 IS is as good or better in ever aspect but one. Noise. While this lens has a STM motor, you can her the lens searching noticeably while focusing. I don't think its the motor itself, but the inners moving. Might have to do with the IS, I don't know. Its not so bad that I think I got a lemon. I was just expecting it to be very quiet and its not.
Its not L glass but it also doesn't cost like L glass either. The noise keeps it from a 5 start mark. I would purchase again from this seller.

I've always been told that photography is all about the skill instead of the gear, but the quality of my photos has dramatically improved since getting this lens.
Before buying, keep in mind that this lens is an RF lens and currently only works with the EOS R, EOS RP, EOS R5, and EOS R6. There is also no adapter to use this on EF cameras. This review is of me shooting on an EOS RP.
Overall, I can say without a doubt that this is the best lens I have ever owned.
I primarily do portrait photography, but I started to get into macro photography because of this lens.
The minimum focusing distance lets you get super close to what you are shooting.
The high aperture does a really good job of making the photo feel like you are really up close and also allows you to shoot at much higher shutter speeds to get really sharp details of moving insect wings without sacrificing light quality.
The lens is also extremely small and compact. It is perfect for toting around all day if you are at a zoo or gardens.
This lens has Canon's new control ring on it that allows you to control certain settings assigned by going into your camera's menu. The only downside for this lens is that, even though I have owned it for weeks and have shot over 2000 photos with it, if you were to hand it to me right now, I couldn't tell you which was the control ring and which was the focusing ring. I've had to disable the control ring because I keep accidentally changing the setting assigned to it.
That being said, the auto focus is extraordinary on this lens. It is incredible how fast it can go from being focused for photographing a group of people 20 feet away to focusing in on a beetle less than an inch long half a foot away.
Overall, if you own an RF camera, I believe you should have one of these on hand just because of the versatility.
All of the photos attached have been shot with this lens. You can see how sharp the lens is from there.

Trusty 50mm lens from Canon for the mirrorless body. Most affordable one. Just received it today (12/30/2020) and love it already. I have a Canon EOS RP, and with the lens, this is the most lightweight and portable setup I have ever had with a full frame camera.
Only have had the lens for a few hours but it looks very similar to the EF version (which I love) and seems to function great. Best lens for the price with the Canon mirrorless system.
The other RF lens I have is the 35mm F1.8 STM IS. Love that lens as well. It appears that both of these lenses focus well for both photo and video, and most importantly to me, they are both quiet for video. I use the RP for photography and family videography.
Highly recommended. Please keep making more affordable RF lenses, Canon. Thank you!

This RF lens perfect as a first lens for your R-Series DSLR. It's small, the perfect focal length for walking around, and it has built in image stabilization. Unfortunately I have an R6 which has stabilization built in and as soon as I got my RF to EF adapter, which was as rare as getting a picture of Big Foot, I was able to use my other lenses and this guy became redundant. I wanted it to wow me but it's just so so. I definitely recommend it if you're thinking about the R or the RP. That would be a great combination.

I love this lens and it pretty much stays attached to my EOS R about 90% of the time. Very sharp photos, good contrast, and the macro ability is really nice to have. I also shoot a lot of video and the IS is great for that (between the IS and moderate digital IS, the video is very stable). If this is the level of quality we can come to expect for the “budget friendly” RF glass, I’m excited to try out the other non-L offerings. Definitely a no-brainer if you’re tired of using adapters.

Canon produces some quality non-L prime lenses...and this is one of the best. The fact that it's fast at f/1.8 and has imagine stabilization is a major plus. It's also light and compact, which makes for a small package when paired with either the R or RP. More importantly, it's sharp, even wide open, with a minimum of distortion. Like most fast primes , it does suffer a little bit if chromatic aberration but this easily corrected and actually far less that which I've experienced in more expensive lenses. If you have a Canon R body, this lens is a must have.

Love this lens on my EOS R. It’s a great walk around lens being so light. It has image stabilization and macro. It’s slightly less sharp than the 35 EF 1.4 II, but you really have to pixel peep. If you want to see our full review with sample images, check out: “Film Jams” on YouTube!

Great image quality and build, I didn’t care for the lens extending when focusing, I kept knocking it. I wish there was a hood that can attach to the body so I can hold it without obstructing the barrel

I returned this lens due to not fitting the EOS Cameras and got almost $100 less. The seller mentioned “not returned in original packaging” when I did. Tried contacting but no return.

Given that this is the cheapest RF lens by Canon on the market at the moment, and not an l lens, this thing's pretty awesome.
I mainly shoot astrophotography, but I tested this out the other night and it performed flawlessly.
I'm not a pro, but coming from my old EF lenses and a Canon t4i, the new Canon r lenses are amazing.

This is a fun little lens, very light compared to other RF lens. I knocked a couple stars off it due to vignetting, technically cosine roll off. Image stabilization is very good, focus motors are a bit loud but it does a great job with EOS R.

Using this lens primarily for video. It’s been awesome. We are using it on a Canon EOS R and a DJI Ronin SC. Perfect “lightweight” combo. Captures beautiful video in all lighting conditions.

The Canon 35MM RF lens is a great buy. It's inexpensive compared to the other RF Lens. I find myself using this lens on a larger number of my professional projects. It's lightweight, sharp with image stabilization. All around great product.

Great lens for a lot of things but definitely suffers from “coma” on stars when used for astro. Stopping down helps but defeats the purpose of buying a 1.8. Stars on attached pic are as sharp as I could manage with a 10X digital zoom on an EOS R

Excellent value. This lens is perfectly balanced on the EOS R. Fast to focus at all apertures. Incredibly sharp images with nice contrast. I would love to see Canon release a 50mm 1.8 at a similar size and weight.

I didnt use this much only 1 shoot. Only because I got rid of the camera it was for. But it was pretty nice. Sturdy, pretty quick AF. Id recommend it for a fiar price prime lens.

The 35mm RF is the perfect walk around lens, the images are sharp and you can get incredibly close to subjects due to it's macro feature. During video mode the focus is completely silent and fast focusing, the 1.8f is awesome for low light as well. It's a must own if you have an RF system.
