Juat look at sample pics and compare to pics from cams that cost 5x more. It's a hard lesson for my Besenjis, but it's not the tool, but the artists' approach which counts. In fact, even if you own a more expensive or complex camera, you should buy this to "de-program your brain" from the obsession with gadgets.

This difficult to find camera is the perfect digital high-end camera for both a beginner and camera professional. It is a point-and-shoot for the beginner but allows the user to learn by overriding any automatic function and practicing till the desired pictures can be captured. I do not yet have an external flash, but the built-in flash works well. The camera has a built-in viewfinder; however the digital mini-screen on this camera is unique and more usable than on other cameras I looked at. The unique swivel feature allows for use at any angle to capture the expected picture. I am still learning about the features of this camera including the excellent zoom capability but I am extremely please with the relatively compact size and features the camera possesses.

I've only had this camera a short time, haven't even had time to play with it beyond the basic functions, but already am thrilled with it. Still shots of birds on the far side of the back yard are amazingly clear and focused. The most amazing is the close-ups, both still and video. After taking many pictures of a flower spider, and cropping and enlarging some, I saw incredible details that I hadn't noticed, even with my face 6 inches away from the real thing! The translucence of the skeleton, copper-colored markings, hairs on the legs... If a camera can get me this excited about a spider, it's got to be good!

I ordered the Gem camera case for our new Canon Powershot A1000IS on a Friday, it shipped the same day, and I received it on the Saturday, just before our trip...Prompt and excellent service. Good value, too. What more can I say? The case is well designed, and the camera fits perfectly.

Overall, I am pleased with this purchase. It is an excellent camera for my wife who wanted something she could easily carry around in a purse or a pocket, and is easy to use. It takes good pictures. However, for a 10MP camera, the pictures are noticeably less sharp then higher priced cameras I've used. I figure it must be the optics.

I have had the S1 & S2. This is a worthy upgrade. I did not think they would be able to imrpve the 10X optical zoom on the S1 without stepping up into a SLR model...then they came out with the 12X optical(S2 & S3).
I also love the wide angle lens. I can take a picture of a group of people in a living room without stepping way back! As far as I am conerned this is the best camera you can get without going to SLR.
The only thing I am bummed about is the size. It still is the same size(roughly) as the S1,S2,S3. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. How else can they pack a powerful lens in a small package. If you want a pocket point and shoot, this is not the one.

Purchased the camera to take pictures on our Hawaii cruise. The following reflects our requirements:

1. Small and portable with good grip (not too skinny)
2. Good zoom (3x or higher)
3. LCD and viewfinder
4. AA batteries
5. Inexpensive
6. Image stabilization

After considering other point and shoot cameras, my wife and I settled for the 590IS. It met all of our requirements and the pictures came out amazing. Almost all of the outside pictures had exceptional details. It made cropping and reducing picture size for sending out to friends and families very easy. One buddy (photographer) noted how well the Cannon took pictures inside the house....not too noisy (within 5 feet, further and you will need an external flash which is expensive). Another photographer buddy actually recommended this camera independently of my research. We are glad that we received this camera prior to the trip. We are truly delightful with the results. One note for those taking a lot of inside pictures. You will need an external flash unit (High-Power Flash HF-DC1 - about $100) to get good pictures beyond 5-7 feet. I will start trying the manual controls for some creative picture taking.

I bought this camera for a two-week trip to Hungary, without knowing much about it except for the customer reviews I read here on Amazon. I am so glad I went for it! This little baby just blows me away. It fits in a pocket. It's cute. It uses AA batteries, which is VERY helpful when you're constantly out and about and don't have time to charge a special camera battery. The pictures are very high quality for the camera's size - never before have I taken such accurate nighttime shots. I am legitimately obsessed with this little guy. No, this isn't one for the professionals, but for folks like me, who like to take lots of snapshots and only dabble in the more artistic side of photography, it's absolutely fantastic.

The form factor fits nicely in the hand when taking action shots on the run. The AVI format produces great video without any blurring unlike other heavier compressions. I recommend an 8GB class 6 SDHC card to keep up with 720p recording. Battery life is quite good and lasted at least a full day in cold weather. The separate video record button is very handy. You can record at moments notice without having to fumble with modes, dials, etc. The small on/off button takes a bit of effort to operate but not too bad. At least I know it won't turn on by mistake when pocketed. The stills pick up a fair amount of noise in low light conditions especially if ISO increases over 80. Therefore, I have turned off auto ISO and fixed it at 80. To be fair, the noise levels are consistent with other cameras such as the SD500 and noticeable only if you are used to the quality of a DSLR. Overall, this camera is orders of magnitude better than any helmet cam (hopefully, I can find a strap to attach it to a helmet or arm). The 10X zoom is one of the best features of this camera especially for sports. One slight annoyance is when I take a still shot during a video shoot, the video gets briefly interrupted (this does not happen in the sony camcorder I have). So far, I have taken mostly VGA sized video and reserve the 720p video for special moments (including those which I plan to extract still frames). Regardless, I would highly recommend this camera for any sports enthusiast or traveler looking for a pocket sized camera with video capability. I also plan to take this to kids soccer games which would allow me to capture a combination of stills and video (like I did with the SD500 but with a more powerful 10x zoom and stereo audio). By the way, the key motivator for me getting the TX1 when I already have a SD500 is that unlike the SD500, the TX1 allows you to operate the optical zoom during video recording. Also, the 10X zoom range and 720p capabilities are hard to live without once you get used to them. I do miss the optical viewfinder of the SD500 to help increase battery life and to get around washed out LCD screens on bright days. But that is a minor issue.

Great product and a great dealer! I started buying referbished product off Amazon a few years ago and I have not been disappointed. This camera is just like if it had been bought new from the store. The camera works great and is very user friendly. Plus the 10x optical zoom is a very handy feature. If there are any downsides it is that the camera is still a bit heavy, a little larger than I would like, and the flash has to be raised manually. Other than these it is a great camera and I would definitely recommend it to anyone else.

Make no mistake, this is not a point and shoot camera. While it comes with great specs, it is a bit harder to use if you're not used to that level of camera. I had numerous pictures come out blurry. The ISO almost has to be redone for each picture (frustrating!). The instruction book must be read, and even then it is difficult to remember what all the symbols mean. Some of the pictures appear grainy. The high def video takes up enormous memory. Maybe someone with experience with better cameras would love this and make good pictures with it. For me, there was too much dissapointment with it.

I've only had the A1000 IS for a few weeks and haven't mastered its use entirely but I can certainly vouch for the IS image stabiliaztion! Riding in a car over a ridged metal bridge that also has a railroad on it, I took photos of the road ahead and the moving train alongside as we were bumping along and: NO BLURRING WHATSOEVER! I was surprised that the images came out clear as a bell. I still have to master close-ups. They are not as easy to achieve as on the Nikon Coolpix 4600 I was using before but so far the quality of photos and colour fidelity is good. Easy to handle as well. I gave it four stars pending verification of the close-up capacity.

I've had this camera almost two months now. It takes great pictures and videos, even HD videos. If you plan to take HD videos or save hi-quality images in RAW mode, invest in a 16GB SDHC class 6 memory card. This gives you plenty of storage space. The only drawback for this camera is battery life. If you take a lot of pictures or videos, keep plenty of standard AA batteries or invest in a couple of sets of hi-capacity AA rechargeables (2600mA or better). If you want to carry only one superzoom camera to take high quality digital images and HD videos, this is the camera for you.

I purchased this camera to take on a vacation. I own an SLR camera which I felt would be to big to carry around on our vacation. However, I have gotten spoiled by the quality of pictures the SLR camera takes. This camera was okay. Many pictures came out blurry which was disappointing. I kept forgetting to turn the flash on when it was needed. I wish it had an automatic flash b/c some of my pictures came out dark. The camera was small and was easy to carry around. The zoom is nice however I noticed if you zoomed in to the maximum amount the camera had a hard time focusing.

Bought this camera because of the good reviews it received and because I already have, and am impressed with, a Canon digital SLR.
The great thing about this camera is that it can be used as a "point and press" gadget, but with minimal effort, it can perform a lot of the operations my SLR can. I like the optical viewfinder for those times when there is a lot of ambient light, but the screen allow easy picture composition.
Picture quality is excellent, and with a 4GB card, you can take hundreds of pictures at high quality without having to download - a boon if you can't easily get to a computer.
Overall, an excellent camera at a good price!

I purchased the camera a few days before my trip to the Caribbean. I didn't have much time to get the feel of it but took it anyway. It was quite user friendly and took out superb pictures. All my friends were amazed by the clarity and detail shown in the pics. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants to snap some professonal style pics without having to purchase a $800 plus camera.

Pros: Easy to use, superzoom, outstanding clarity & quality, long battery life
Cons: I find it gets heavy, but I have a fanny type camera bag that seems to help with that.

I am a complete rookie when it comes to photography. I wanted a point and shoot camera that I could grow into. The x20 optical zoom does truly take fantastic pics of the moon. This camera allows you to point and shoot and take fantastic photos. However, there is also the manual and program sets that will allow you to create custom settings. (This is where the "grow into" comes in.)

The photos I've taken have been tremendous and have changed how my family lives their lives, lol. Always ready to pose for Mom or stop the car for that "shot".

At this price (at the time of this $380 min) is a valuable investment. I look forward to using this camera for year and years to come. I have graduations to capture=)

This camera takes very nice pictures. But it eats batteries like it is going out of style. I went thru a lot of batteries when I took pictures at my brothers wedding. A lot of features, that I haven't even used yet. I love the feature after taking a picture, no matter which way you hold the camera, the picture adjust - going from vertical to horizontal. Overall a very good camera for the price with the exceptions of the batteries. Also, I would recommend to get the 4 GB memory card. It holds over 1,700 pictures.

This camera is excellent. It is very small and compact but packs a real punch. The image quality is very good (if you don't compare it to a Digital SLR) and it also has pretty good video quality too.

Features worth mentioning are that it also allows you to record video clips for as long as your memory card (and battery) will allow. It also has a funky time lapse video record mode that allows you to record over a long period of time and have a short video clip at the end of it. Very fun to play with.

The image stability makes a noticable difference to image quality, especially in lower light conditions so definitely get a camera with it on if you can.

The battery life I would consider 'very good' but not excellent. It did run out on me when recording a two hour long time lapse clip, but it had been used a bit before that too. To conserve power it turns the screen off when using this feature so they have clearly thought it through.

This is a very competent camera with a lot of positive features and I can't really say anything bad about it.

This particular camera is excellent, especially for the price. I had actually bought this to record a concert,(Nine Inch Nails). did really good, besides the poor lighting that went with the ballroom. Did not help what so ever. Got great audio. Got great videos. So if looking to buy a great camera to do a great job I would choose this one.

I bought my A630 about 4 months ago. Before I had a Kodak Easy Share 4.0 mpx, and I figured it was time for an upgrade, because I was going to study abroad in Germany for the semester and I naturally wanted really good photographs.
It's a month before I come home and overall I have to say that I love the pictures this camera has produced. I'm not a photographer, but I am really picky about photo quality, and this camera doesn't disappoint. It has a setting for virtually everything you could want. Sometimes the setting for the situation wouldn't work as well as other settings (for taking a picture of a statue at night, I got the best picture with the indoor setting without flash instead of the night setting. Who would have guessed?) Also, sometimes my pictures would be blurry or have a lot of noise in the pictures with indoor settings. The blurry-ness could get annoying sometimes when I just wanted to take a great picture, but I would just apply the high ISO or change settings and it would be fine. While traveling, the biggest problem I've run into with this camera has been the size. I knew it was big when I bought it, and it was a sacrifice I was willing to take. But I think it's worth mentioning: This is no pocket camera.
My favorite thing about this camera is all of the customization features for pictures before you take it. I also find it really easy to use these features, which is nice for click-and-go situations. My personal favorites are the color exclusion and foliage setting. They make outdoor pictures look really natural (even with people in them). Also, the rotating screen has come in handy, not just for self/group portraits (because it's awkward to ask a passerby in another language to take your picture) but for awkward shots too. Instead of bending over to get a good angle, I can just rotate the screen and see what kind of a shot I'm going to get. Along the same lines, I've gotten good videos out of my A630 as well. You can tell exactly what the talking moose is saying in a crowded market!
I also found it useful to use rechargeable batteries because the camera does hold 4 of them (they last for quite a long time!) and it's just cheaper in the long run if you rely heavily on your camera day in and day out.
Overall, through my experience, I would recommend this camera to anyone who travels and wants unforgettable pictures and is willing to settle for a bulky camera. I can honestly say that this camera has brought out the mini-photographer in me, because now I try every setting and angle to make stuff look cool!

I bought this camera about a month ago, so I've had a little time to use it and found it to be a great camera. It's a good mix of being both a simple "point-and-shoot" camera or allowing great control in manual modes for special effect pictures. I don't consider myself to be a good photographer, yet the pictures I get with this camera are great. I've had a couple of digital cameras, but this one blows them away. Several features I like are that it uses SD or the newer SDHC cards, standard or NmHI AA batteries, has an optical viewfinder (great for us over 40 people). While it comes with a good deal of documentation, using this camera without reading too much of that is easy. The onscreen menus are easy to navigate. To be honest, I can't think of a bad thing to say about this camera. Well, one thing is they give you a 32 meg SD card with it, which is pretty useless as an 8 mega pixel super fine picture will consume close to 4 megabytes of memory... Personally I would recommend at least a 512 meg card, also, get good NmHI rechargeable batteries and charger.

After lots of thinking (only because I still have/had a perfectly working digital camera, although already somewhat outdated) finally decided to buy this camera, and after the first minute all doubts were gone. Compared to my old camera (also a Canon), everything is so much improved that I should have bought it much earlier. For me, the perfect combination between a DSLR and a compact camera.

My wife wanted a new camera so we did some shopping and she liked this one at Best Buy. She has large hands and now-a-days everything is made so small and compact. She was happy to find this one and we have had Canon's before. Did some research and it got good reviews so went online and saved like $75 buying it from Amazon. We love it. Takes great pictures, is fast, startup time is a little slow but not bad.
