Everything else is all upside. I used it the other day at my daughters soccer game. I sat mid field and took clear close up pics of her in net. Obviously not a regulation size field. 6 yr olds size field.
The movies have been hit or miss on clarity. It is probably a user error as we are still getting to know the camera.
While it is bigger than our previous Canon SD590 it isn't too big. It fit in the pocket of my shorts. I look forward to understanding the manual controls. Also, the playback features are much improved over our previous Canon.
No plans to use the SW as we use Picasa.
It ia a bit complicated to use but doable.
I managed to get some very clear / sharp images by using the different settings provided, (David Bailey I aint), and downloading the images to a PC couldn't be simpler, you just plug the supplied USB cable into the camera and the computer, and, with the computer running, turn on the camera and all the pictures on the camera that have not you been saved are downloaded for you.
Altogether a very good package for the price
Picture quality is very good as expected from Canon the camera is very light and comfortable for general use - the body has a slight plastic feel the weight is all in the lens.
The Canon Powershot is great value general snapshot camera with a very impressive zoom-even with the digital zoom on top (15x), pictures were very clear - no camera shake.
The thing I love most is the zoom. My previous camera only had a 4x zoom so the SX100 gives me 2.5 times that. While the image stabilizing helps, if your going to take several pictures at full zoom, you might want to have a tripod or some other stable surface for the camera to rest on. I was difficult to get a great hand-held clear shot at full zoom.
I have been very happy with the 8MP imaging as well. While it would be nice to have an optical viewfinder, the LCD screen is large and crisp and makes looking at your recent shots a lot of fun! I haven't checked it out with the sun to my back yet so I can't comment on how the LCD looks in bright light.
Like most modern compact cameras, the SX100's Achille's heel is the recharge time before you can snap another flash picture, though it really hasn't been a problem so far.
Over all I am very pleased with the performance of the camera and would definitely recommend it!
Used correctly, this camera does a great job of taking good quality images. I had to play with the camera for about 15-20 mins to get familiar with it so I could take the best pictures possible. My sister owned a Powershot A530 before this one and i had the same experience with that too.
This camera fits nicely in your jeans pocket and is quite light.
You will need a tripod to take good low-light shots. I have a cat and a rabbit and a 3 yr old nephew - The kids and pets setting really works well to take pictures of them. Generally the few manual settings it does have are good enough for a serious amateur photographer.
One gripe I do have is that with regular AA alkaline batteries the flash recycle time can go up to 8 seconds and the camera is blank and unusable during this time. This of course is a problem with most canon Powershots. The solution I have found is to use batteries made specifically for taking pictures (Duracell makes some) or just use rechargeable NiMH batteries. This works great. Almost down to 1 sec between shots with that.
Overall I'd definitely recommend this camera to anyone. But you have to be a little patient and get used to it first - I think this is true for any good camera out there though.
Having recently lost faith in Sony compacts I thought it was time to give Canon a go. I have always been a fan of Canon - I have a collection of old SLR's and film compacts - and have one of their DSLRs for more professional shots.
Neither myself or my mum have been disappointed with this camera, it has a sturdy build with a quality feel to the finish, good clear screen, beautiful true colours.
I don't know why I ever bought Sonys, I won't be going back. This little camera is an excellant buy.
Best buy for photography beginners, and a compact camera for the whole family :)
Pros: Great camera, non-understandable low price, manual mode works like a charm - white balance, focus, colors, exposure... nice photos all in all.
Cons: if it counts, not an ultra-compact camera, it's big for majority of pockets.

We purchased it as a spare, next to our digital SLR. It is not designed for award winning photography, but for instant snap shots. It does what is says on the tin. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the images and of the video function.
The only downside is that it is quite bulky and although it will fit into a jeans pocket, this would not be too comfortable. Fits perfectly into a decent sized handbag though.
The pictures that I took of a water ski show also turned out very good and may become part of the promotional photos for the future.
The numerous direct-control features on this camera were also a welcome change from the command menu layers one normally will have to content with on most equipment of this type.
But many of the controls and menu items are quite confusing, requiring extensive reading of the manual. In other words, they require a good deal of preparation. They are not naturally logical.
Even so, this is a most capable camera and well worth the price.
