Certainly the camera does all that it was wanted of it and there remain many features for me to explore.
I cannot criticise the images and the camera's capability exceeds my present competence. Image review using a HD tele is simplicity itself and is wirelessly controlled using the supplied remote.
The HD video is a delight and can be viewed directly on a HD tele. I bought the additional cable from a UK manufacturer at a fraction of the cost of the Canon branded version.
The final decider was the detail contained in the manual and the fact that a copy can be downloaded before purchase.
I'm well satisfied.
I bought this camera for my wife because it has an "easy" setting. The easy setting is the ideal point and shoot that eliminates the need to set any options and is therefore well suited to anyone who just wants to take pictures. I also bought a 4G SDHC card which allows almost 2K pictures at the highest resolution. My wife is delighted with the camera and has shot a couple of hundred pictures, all on the easy setting (the one with the little red heart). Because of the 8mp resolution I am able to edit and crop the pictures without losing detail. I have played with the camera just enough to learn that the advanced features are very comparable to some of my larger and much more expensives cameras. It won't replace a SLR but it has become our main travel camera because of its small size, it is simple enough to keep my wife happy and complex enough to keep me happy. We have owned these cameras for several months, taken over 1,000 pictures and they have held up very well.
At the current selling price of these cameras they are a great bargain.
P.S. I did have a minor problem with one of the cameras that required a return to the Canon service center. I realize that stuff happens and I wasn't thrilled about having to mail the camera to Canon but their customer service person couldn't have been nicer or more helpful and I had my camera back in a just a few days. All in all not a bad experience.
perfect focus up to 3ft. Beyond that even at zoom, every thing is blurry. THis is one of the worst cameras I ever purchased.
We had an old A420 the was great...were hoping for the same at least. This is actualy worse...how can that be posible?
a senior that is a Plus. I also like the optical view finder
which seems to be larger than the standard. It particularly helps
on bright sunny days as the LCD viewer is hardly usable. A great
Buy!
I am very familiar with Canon cameras, so my natural tendency was to go for another Canon. After some research, I settled on the PowerShot A460.
I think it was a good choice, as it takes good quality photos in the auto mode, has a decent zoom range, and seems to have a durable construction that should last her a long time. While it's not tiny, its small size means that she can carry it around without a case.
You're going to need a memory card, and I would recommend at least a 2GB card to take a decent amount of photos before needing to empty it, but 4GB would probably be the best for most people.
This is a camera without a lot of complicated controls for those with basic to mid-level snapshot needs. To get more, you're going to have to pay more, but that's the nice thing about Canon's line of cameras; there is a model out there for just about every need.
Definitely recommended!
The only problem is that there is a metal carabiner supplied that is used to attach the strap, and this metal carabiner easily scratches the camera (in my experience) and so I've ended up removing the strap entirely.
A recommended purchase.
First off, this has a manual flash. A manual flash...in 2009? Why?
Second, this is bulkier to carry around than four SD600's, that's right, four of them!
Third, the LCD is set waaay too bright, even on the dimmest setting. Goodbye battery life...
...and fourth, since I'm on the batteries, it conveniently runs off 2 AA's but the flash recharge time (time between shots) is the slowest of any camera I've used in over 20 years - film or digital! While the flash is recharging, you can't even take other non-flash pictures. Sigh, why Canon, why?
As a result of the flash recharge and screen brightness defects I returned the camera after just one day. For what it's worth, the few pictures I took were reasonably clear but even with the image stabilization they were no better than those taken with my old SD600. Back to the drawing board for me. If you can live with it's shortcomings, the superzoom is nice, but I found the deficiencies too much to bear.
However on a recent trip to Florida, it just gave up and threw a lens error, and never came to life since then. I tried everything myself from removing the batteries to manually adjusting it etc., however it did not work at all. Now it is sitting dead and I guess I have to send it to Canon or take it to Best Buy for repair. It seems repairing them will be very costly. May be buying a new one will be cheaper.
I was disappointed that I couldn't manually focus as I could do with the Canon a510 that I purchased 3 1/2 years ago. This is especially helpful in low light situations. It's also nice to be able to check whether or not the auto-focus has focused properly...You can set the A1000 to "macro", "normal" and "infinity", but from there you have to hope that the auto-focus worked properly.
I was pleasantly surprised that the aperture automatically adjusted to the changing light conditions in the movie mode. You can also lighten or darken the light reading in the movie mode, but if you do this, the aperture won't adjust to changing light conditions as you make a video.
The camera is small enough to fit in a small case or pocket or pocketbook.
....I've owned the camera for almost a year now...I still miss being able to manual focus as I could with the a510. I was just out trying to take a picture of a spider's web. I couldn't focus on it with the a1000. With manual focus I would have been able set the focus on around 1 foot...Then an airliner went overhead. I tried taking a picture of that on 4x zoom and the camera would focus on it. If I had manual focus, I could have set it on infinity...Also, when it come to taking movies with this camera, I think that the a510 had a better microphone than the a1000.
