The great thing about this camera is that it can be used as a "point and press" gadget, but with minimal effort, it can perform a lot of the operations my SLR can. I like the optical viewfinder for those times when there is a lot of ambient light, but the screen allow easy picture composition.
Picture quality is excellent, and with a 4GB card, you can take hundreds of pictures at high quality without having to download - a boon if you can't easily get to a computer.
Overall, an excellent camera at a good price!

Cons: I find it gets heavy, but I have a fanny type camera bag that seems to help with that.
I am a complete rookie when it comes to photography. I wanted a point and shoot camera that I could grow into. The x20 optical zoom does truly take fantastic pics of the moon. This camera allows you to point and shoot and take fantastic photos. However, there is also the manual and program sets that will allow you to create custom settings. (This is where the "grow into" comes in.)
The photos I've taken have been tremendous and have changed how my family lives their lives, lol. Always ready to pose for Mom or stop the car for that "shot".
At this price (at the time of this $380 min) is a valuable investment. I look forward to using this camera for year and years to come. I have graduations to capture=)

Features worth mentioning are that it also allows you to record video clips for as long as your memory card (and battery) will allow. It also has a funky time lapse video record mode that allows you to record over a long period of time and have a short video clip at the end of it. Very fun to play with.
The image stability makes a noticable difference to image quality, especially in lower light conditions so definitely get a camera with it on if you can.
The battery life I would consider 'very good' but not excellent. It did run out on me when recording a two hour long time lapse clip, but it had been used a bit before that too. To conserve power it turns the screen off when using this feature so they have clearly thought it through.
This is a very competent camera with a lot of positive features and I can't really say anything bad about it.

It's a month before I come home and overall I have to say that I love the pictures this camera has produced. I'm not a photographer, but I am really picky about photo quality, and this camera doesn't disappoint. It has a setting for virtually everything you could want. Sometimes the setting for the situation wouldn't work as well as other settings (for taking a picture of a statue at night, I got the best picture with the indoor setting without flash instead of the night setting. Who would have guessed?) Also, sometimes my pictures would be blurry or have a lot of noise in the pictures with indoor settings. The blurry-ness could get annoying sometimes when I just wanted to take a great picture, but I would just apply the high ISO or change settings and it would be fine. While traveling, the biggest problem I've run into with this camera has been the size. I knew it was big when I bought it, and it was a sacrifice I was willing to take. But I think it's worth mentioning: This is no pocket camera.
My favorite thing about this camera is all of the customization features for pictures before you take it. I also find it really easy to use these features, which is nice for click-and-go situations. My personal favorites are the color exclusion and foliage setting. They make outdoor pictures look really natural (even with people in them). Also, the rotating screen has come in handy, not just for self/group portraits (because it's awkward to ask a passerby in another language to take your picture) but for awkward shots too. Instead of bending over to get a good angle, I can just rotate the screen and see what kind of a shot I'm going to get. Along the same lines, I've gotten good videos out of my A630 as well. You can tell exactly what the talking moose is saying in a crowded market!
I also found it useful to use rechargeable batteries because the camera does hold 4 of them (they last for quite a long time!) and it's just cheaper in the long run if you rely heavily on your camera day in and day out.
Overall, through my experience, I would recommend this camera to anyone who travels and wants unforgettable pictures and is willing to settle for a bulky camera. I can honestly say that this camera has brought out the mini-photographer in me, because now I try every setting and angle to make stuff look cool!

My R4 had 7x zoom, which I sadly miss, and wide-angle too.
But fed-up of digital cameras packing-in on me after only 2 years, when previously my old 35mm Olympus had been faithful for 17 years, I decided to go for a really cheap and cheerful one in the A470.
I saw it advertised in Argos for only £49 (sorry Amazon) and looked it up on WHICH? when I got home.
Which gave it a good review so, even though it is slightly bulkier than I'm used to and has only half the zoom, I decided to go for it.
So far the picture quality is far superior to the poor quality I'd unfortunately got used to.
I also like the photo viewer which rotates photos that you have taken vertically so that you always view them the correct way up. NICE TOUCH.
It was extremly easy to use without once referring to the instructions - basically just take it out of the box and start taking pictures.
In summary, it does exactly what it says on the tin and I like it.

Here's my opinion of the top-selling "A" series cameras:
A580. This 2008 model is an A590IS (see below) without image stabilization and with semi-automatic instead of manual controls. I'd spend the extra bucks for the A590IS, because those two features can make quite a difference.
A650 IS. You can do a lot with this sweet little camera, though it may be more than you need. It has a flip-out LCD panel and the option of manual controls. The shots I've seen from this model look great. Keep your ISO under 800 and you won't get any noise.
A720 IS. This fully-loaded 2007 model has all the toys, including a 6x zoom (35mm film equivalent of 35-210mm), image stabilization, adjustable flash power and optional second-curtain flash. This last feature means you can make the flash fire at the end of a long exposure, instead of the beginning, so moving subjects streak into focus instead of out.
A470. This 2008 camera is great for kids or anyone just looking for a good basic camera. It includes Canon's face detection technology and has a zoom lens, 14 shooting modes and the ability to set exposure compensation, ISO and white balance manually. Plus it looks great, and is a good bargain.
Finally, the A590IS (the camera on this page) is a 2008 upgrade to an older model, the A570IS. The face detection system works a little better than the one on its predecessor, and the new model is slightly rounder and easier to grip. I personally like that it has automatic and manual controls, though I haven't seen anyone using the manual set yet. Overall this camera is a fine performer, a great bargain and I think the best buy of the bunch. I bought one for myself.

Like I said, I'm no expert. I can't go into detail about pixels and all the settings, and camera noise. But I WILL learn! In the meantime, I can still take great pictures. I am soooooo happy.
A tip: Get the black Tamrac bag that goes with it. You'll want it!

I do not like that it is slow when you want to take continuous shots but it is so easy to use anyway. However, 2 AA Batteries do not last much, you always have to carry backups if you are on the road. Good part is that you can find those everywhere.
Overall, I am happy with my cool looking camara.

Other than that it's a good camera.
