So. I used to have a Canon S95, until my fat grubby fingers accidentally pressed on the Power button whilst it was in its camera case, so the lens extended and got jammed. They wanted to charge me 200 bucks for a replacement and I was like no0o0o0o0o0oo.ANYWAYS. having had a GREAT experience with the Canon S95 (people shots look absolutely brilliant, low light shots are AMAZING, shots of scenery with rich colors come out looking vibrant and rich. In short ,the S95 was almost a perfect camera), I the S100 was the first camera I looked at and bought.So. Whuddup with the S100?The good:1) GREAT idea to add on the thumb AND finger grip2) Low light shots just look absolutely amazing still. I love it. rich color, good white balance. all's good.3) People shots still look great on auto mode, even in low light4) noise is pretty damn low, until you crank it up to some obscene level, but hey this is a small cam.5) THE SIZE. Honestly, there is just no other camera out there with this size to performance ration. except for the RX100. But that beast is a good 2.5x the price of a s100.The Bad:1) Battery life is uhhhhh okayyy. Granted I don't really give half a hoot about the GPS function so I switched it off (THAT, saves an insane amount of battery btw), But I took approx 260 - 280 pictures, all with Flash (slow synchro). That's decent. WHY IS THAT SO o_OOverall? well I love the camera. I really do. It serves my needs perfectly fine, just taking pictures especially in low lighting conditions. If i could change one thing, it would be the slow low-light focusing. ohwell.

I read a lot of reviews on this unit before I bought it. I am an experienced SLR user and wanted something that would go full manual (I'm a control freak, I suppose), was pocket-able, durable, and took a good pic. It does most things well EXCEPT the battery life is very poor (weird given that the same battery ran the SD870 I own about 3-4 times as long as it does this camera), and while traveling, it got dust on the sensor somehow (Canon fixed under warranty - thanks, Canon!). Images are fine to about ISO 800; beyond that they get bad quickly (but this is true for most non-DSLR cameras). It took forever to threat the strap to the camera when I got it. The GPS function is WAY more hassle than it's worth: takes a long time to lock a signal and it REALLY gobbles up the battery.

So, long story, my beloved s95 ended up in the washing machine. Don't ask.I looked around for another s95 -- they now cost *more* than they did when they came out, presumably because the demand is still high enough to warrant it. Not surprising really... it's still one of the few remaining cameras at it's price point that will shoot RAW and provides manual controls.What to do? I read the reviews of the s100 and 110.I needed/wanted a fairly basic camera that would produce nice shots and give me manual controls when I wanted them. I didn't need the GPS (people really use that?) or a touch screen. Based on the comparison reviews here on Amazon, I took a chance on the s100.I've had a very favorable experience so far.It does everything my s95 did, I leave the GPS switched off so the battery lasts 300+ shots, and the ergonomics are a slight improvement. The changes to the buttons a few reviews mentioned were incidental to me. Easy to grok, easy to work with. The sensor is producing nice clear shots and the improvement in pixels has improved the quality of the macro shots I enjoy. I'm not keen on the quality of the flash images (still learning to improve that) but the low light shots are pretty good.I would say that, after a month of daily use, I'm glad I made this decision. Based on my experience so far, I would say that the reviews which gave the s100 a slight edge of the s95 were accurate.

My only qualm with this camera is that I was hoping to get better depth-of-field blurring with the aperture wide open. The overall image quality is great and the size makes it easy to travel with.

I did research for quite some time before finally settling with this camera. We needed a camera that could take great pictures outside as well as inside. So much of our pictures are at night or indoors and its so hard to find a camera that does well in low light settings, but this camera is absolutely perfect for both. I had the Powershot S95 and wanted an upgrade. This camera is slight better than its predecessor, with some alterations to the control panels. We gave our old one to my in laws and they love that one as well. I am extremely satisfied with this line of point and shoot cameras. It performs almost as well as our DSLR and was perfect for taking some high quality pictures when we traveled without having to carry a bulky and attention getting camera.

After using this camera for almost 2 years, we got the dreaded LENS ERROR. This camera has been well cared for, always in a padded camera bag. Canon website indicates this affects the following serial nos: "The first and second digits of the camera's serial number are any number from '29' through '41'. "I've called the Canon Customer Service and they confirmed it will be covered under the service recall, but based on the experience of others here, I'm not too optimistic about the outcome.I'll update this post if one repair fixes it for good. Otherwise, we'll be shopping for a different brand. I'm really disappointed because I've always believed in the quality of Canon cameras.Update Feb 2014:We did get the camera repaired for free under the service recall; they mailed the camera back for free and it's working fine so far.

I say that because of the GPS function, otherwise I would have purchased the S110.Super slo-mo is great, however, it does only work with very bright light.The camera has many functions, and takes incredibly clear pictures. The glass is very good, just what you would expect from Canon. Picture quality is close to the Nikon 700, but it is portable enough to take everywhere.I would also recommend the 'Eynpire Camera Leather Case For Canon S100'. Nice case, classic style, better functionality than a nylon zippered case.My only wish is that someone would come up with a reasonably priced underwater case for this camera.

I bought this camera because it had the dreaded "lens error" and didn't work. Luckily, I have a high understanding of all things hammer related and proceeded to beat it until it worked again. I am sure the dents will rub out. ;-)I had to order parts to repair it and had to wait a while but the camera once fixed is outstanding. Very happy.

Even as a professional, I hated carrying around my DSLR, and I was craving a pocketable camera that gave me the ability to use all the manual controls that I always use. Man, did this little gem fill the bill! It yields super sharp images that easily rival my Nikon D7000, and needless to say, my Nikon is no longer used! The only drawback is that even with the aperture opened all the way, you do not get much background blur because of the smaller sensor, but most of this can be remedied with Photoshop or other programs.One review said that it was hard on batteries, but I've had no problems with that. If you're worried about it, order an extra battery just in case. This thing yields 4,000 x 2664 images that you could easily print up to gallery quality 11 x 14s or 16 x 20s while still maintaining good resolution. It easily fits into my pocket, and there's simply no reason to be hauling around a DSLR! I love it!

This camera has SLR features packed in a tiny package. Want to control shutter speed? You can. Aperture? No problem. How about shooting RAW? SUPPORTED! The color tone is vivid and amazing. The build quality is solid and durable. Is it a DSLR? Of course not. But how about a camera with built in HDR mode as well as that miniaturization effect? Ok those novelties wear off. But this camera really has just tons of cool features that you may love or never use. You could shoot in Auto all the time, and you'll still get amazing pictures from a camera that fits easily in your pocket.Oh and the battery lasts. I haven't had to charge it more than once in a few days of casual shooting/video recording.My one gripe with this camera is the video is so unbelievably uncompressed. Then when I go to compress it, I lose color tone. That has more to do with my reencoding software I think. Would be nice if you could adjust the Q rate of the h264 encoder.

I'll start this review by saying that I have years shooting pictures professionally and I've always used Canon products. With that being said I have tried other major brand point and shoots but I always seem to come back to Canon. Professionally I shoot with the Canon 5D Mark II and 7D but I find that when I travel or shoot my kids I often just want something small and portable. Most recently I've used the G11 and G9 for that reason.One of the features I look for is a lot of manual control - while it's not necessary of course you can usually get the results that your eye sees if you understand how your camera sees and interprets light. If you're serious about photography I recommend taking the time to learn this - here's a perfect, easy to understand reference if you're interested: Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any CameraThe advanced features such as manual controls and RAW exposures are the primary reason that this camera costs what it does. If you're not interested in any of that than you may not need this camera - the digital elph series may be a better bet for you. On the other hand if you want that level of control and size is the primary factor then this camera is perfect.Will you get the same results from a S100 that you would from a larger digital SLR? Simply put, no. You're always going to face issues with noise because of the smaller sensor size and you're always stuck with the same lens. Battery life is another issue - you'll want to pack some extras for a full day of shooting.While you're stuck with the built in lens it's a pretty decent quality one offering a nice wide 24mm view and a bright 2.0 aperture. It also features built in optical image stabilization which is valuable. The sensor in this camera is equivalent to the one used in the G11/G12 series (bigger than other similar sized point and shoots) which still gives you excellent image quality. Noise can be mitigated with some post-processing - Canon includes some nice software with this camera to get you started. One touch HD video recording is really convenient and with a 7 month old I find myself using that much more frequently than our video camera. What I like best is that I can stick this camera right in my jeans pocket. It's super small and very portable. When we're lugging the baby and his gear I'm grateful that this doesn't add any weight. And let's face it - while I prefer the way pictures look when I take them with my 5D Mark II, if the cameras not with me what's the point?Overall I'm very happy with this camera. I know there's some folks disappointed going from the S95 to this S100. If you have an S95 and you're happy you may not need to upgrade. If you're in the market for a new model I would say this is one of the best out there. I find myself taking it everywhere and finding new photo opportunities that I would have missed without it. And if you need a case to go with it here's the one I bought - it's a perfect fit: Lowepro Santiago 20 Camera Case (Black).

It was the top rated low-light compact camera on a few websites, and it totally holds up to that. It takes really nice pictures in dark bars without a flash. A few times now I've had people insist that the picture won't come out, and then I show it to them and they are thusly schooled.It has a lot of amazing and fun settings, it fits in my purse, and everything is great quality for the price point. I absolutely adore this camera, and if you stand still long enough I'll explain that to you at every opportunity.

I carry this with my Nikon d5100. I use both. I love that it shoots raw and I sometimes set it on aeb for 3 shots that I process in Photomatix for HDR pictures. It frees me up for getting a lot of different shots. I like the neutral density filter for water shots. It's so handy and small that it lays on my desk. It fits right in my pocket too. They have a long way to go if they are going to replace this camera with a phone camera. Get the gorilla pod for it too. Very handy.

We bought this camera when our 2nd baby was born. It worked fantastically well for about a year and then, suddenly and for no apparent reason, the shutter started to slow. We would hold down the shutter button, the camera would focus, and then it'd take a good 3-5 seconds for the image to be captured.Now, it won't take still photos at all, just video.And our online research shows that quite a few others have had the same issue, most after warranties have expired.We've reached out to Canon about the matter and are waiting to hear back. In the meantime, we dusted off our 5 year-old Sony point-and-shoot.Disappointed but hopeful that Canon will help us find a good solution for what seems to be a product flaw.

I agree with all the positive reviews on image quality, manual adjustments, RAWness, and size. I will add that this camera has lived for the last two years in either the rear pocket of a bicycle shirt (in a plastic bag), a backpack, or a pants pocket. I haven't had a single issue. The darn thing is rock solid.

I have a Canon T4i but still have this point and shoot for convenience. I am very impressed with the image quailty. The aperture range in this camera is great for low-light and portrait pics and the optical zoom is rather impressive from a true point and shoot. My only complaint on this camera is the build quailty. Don't get me wrong, the camera is defintely nice-looking but I have had instances where the lens is stuck open then powering the camera off. The pop-up flash also concerns me as there are a lot of moving parts and some of the convenience of being a pocket camera is offset by my durability concerns of the camera.I am also very impressed with the wide-angle shots this camera can take.

I love this camera! I have had it for a year now and have nothing but great things to say. This is probably my fourth or fifth digital camera and it is by far the best. I get comments all the time on how great my pictures look. The colors are vibrant and you can blow them up to poster size with no loss in quality. The battery life is pretty good but I would always recommend an extra battery. It has great zoom too. The only draw back is that the flash pops up on the top. It is where you would want to put your finger so often gets covered when people take a picture for you. It is definitely worth the money if you plan on taking pictures often and want them to look nice. I've used it in the dark, in bright sunlight, with snow, with fireworks and everytime a perfect picture. I recommended.

We loved this camera for the first 6 months. Then I got the dreaded "lens error" of course it was the first day we were on vacation in Yosemite National Park (one of the most photographed places in the world). I can tell you I cried missing out on the photos. Anyways, came home, did some research and found that cannon admitted there was a problem and would do the repair for free. I was happy for that even though I was without a camera for my daughters first birthday. Ugh.Got it back and not more than a year later now the shutter release won't work! I have to leave it on for 2 minuets before it will work intermittently. This of course one month before my daughters second birthday. Another birthday without a good camera? Last straw. I take impeccable care of my camera, this really saddens me. I paid a lot for this camera and expected it to last more than a year and a half. Cannon is not admitting a shutter problem even though multiple other people have had the same complaint. Do not buy this camera, nothing but problems

Short and sweet for the first part... the camera is amazing, just be prepared to read the manual, otherwise you're not going to understand the majority of the camera and then it's a waste of money. It does chew through batteries, especially if you are using the GPS functionality. Do yourself a favor and buy 2 extra batteries (and make sure that they are not only Canon, but they are Canon batteries made in Japan for the US market. There are a lot of grey market Canon batteries out there in genuine Canon packaging, but when you get them, most of the printing on the battery is in Chinese, not English, and the Chinese batteries hold much less of a charge than the "real" batteries. I got one of these through a 3rd-party Amazon affiliate and the product description said nothing of this other than it was a genuine Canon battery-- very misleading product description which I've brought to Amazon's attention, but nothing has been done about it so far.The second part is not so sweet. The camera I purchased was sold by Amazon and shipped my Amazon. The first camera came with so little packing in the box that they might as well have put no packaging in the box. Amazon said they would exchange the camera, and I asked that the packaging be correctly done. In fact, I called 3 more time to express the need for correct packaging. When I got the replacement camera, it was packed exactly the same way as the first camera. A call center supervisor said there was nothing he could do about this and I should leave more packaging feedback which was ignored the first time around. I am contacting someone in the corporate office to escalate this issue from the top down. I can't afford to do my own exhaustive testing on the camera to ensure that it is not damaged (the first camera took 2 weeks before I heard a grinding sound from the lens).I am normally a strong supporter of Amazon who has been buying from them for at least 15 years, but I am very annoyed and frustrated at the way they have (or have not) handled this problem and they refuse to escalate the problem beyond the first level supervisor in the order/customer support center. I have now burned through more than $900 worth of cameras that I am returning to them, and they can't sell these as new, so they have to be eating the cost. In fact, the supervisor refused to send out another camera to me because "it is likely to have the same packaging issue". Okay, they won't send any more to me, but if someone else purchases this camera, they will have the same packaging issues as I had. I can't believe that Amazon considers this to be an acceptable business model! It's also a rare instance where they are not focused on customer satisfaction. I don't care how far up the management chain I'll have to go, but I'm not going to let this drop and I have the names of the people I spoke to that are dropping the ball so badly.

Let me start by saying that this camera has one of the nicest designsI have seen/used on a compact camera. The size is perfect as is themenu layout and the user interface. The manual controls are great andfor the most part logical and intuitive.After using the camera for almost two weeks I got some mixed thoughts.The camera is a total joy to use and makes you wanna use the manualmodes and try different things and get creative because it makes itreally easy. Accessing things like ISO, WB, exposure compensation,bracketing, etc. is really simple and you can customize it to make itwork almost the way you want. Very cool indeed!The problem I had with the camera has more to do with image qualitythan anything else (both photos and video). I decided to give this onea try mostly based on the positive reviews and popularity of both theS95 and S90, hoping it would be a camera that would cover most ofmy photographic needs (at least on paper it was).I tested this camera along with a Sony HX9V. Have beentaking the same pictures with both, under the same light conditionsand with the closest camera settings I can use. The S100 beats theSony in most low light situations for obvious reasons (2.0 vs 3.5 maxaperture). But in almost every other situation: moderate, bright,overcast, indoors, landscape... the HX9V produces better results outthe camera without further processing. I wasn't impressed with the results of the S100 at ISOs over 400 and was especially disappointed with the auto WB results.Focusing, although fast and accurate when there's enough light available, israther slow in low light, and in many cases not able to lockfocus.The images produced by the S100 were not vibrant, sharp and detailedenough for me. They were a little on the noisy side at high ISO andthe color rendition was a little inaccurate, I'm guessing due to poor AutoWhite Balance.Video looks really nice and clear as long as you don't move thecamera. I mean, image stabilization works really well, don't take me wrong; the problem iswhen you start panning right and left, up/down that it looks reallybad. The frame rate of this camera I believe is 24fps so it's not very smooth. If you watchthe video on anything that's bigger than 20 inches, it looks so bad (the panning) thatalmost makes you dizzy.So I guess for someone who's not very concerned about photo and video quality, and is looking more for features, full manual controls, compact size and a nice user interface, this camera would be worth serious consideration. Or you can just buy a camera that will give you the same kind of JPEGs for half the price. I'm trying to get the best possible pictures without the need of much post processing (if I wanted to do that I would just shoot RAW with my DSLR).I decided to return it to BB today and will be getting the Sony NEX-5N instead. It's bigger in size but produces way better JPEGs out of the camera (some of the best I've seen) and gives me full manual controls and the option to shoot RAW if I want to. Would I sacrifice size for image quality? Absolutely. It's not a huge camera anyway. With some of the smaller lenses is not much bigger than the S100. The $270 price difference is worth from IQ point of view which is what I'm looking for.

this is a super cool camera. i had the s95 and loved it. but find that this one is easier to hold and takes better pictures.

I know nothing about cameras. This is a great point and shoot camera for me. Pictures are great and it is easy to use.
