Having bought this camera and lugged it up an alp it was very diappointing to get back rather dark pictures - both on full auto and landscape - that were much worse than those my fellow mountaineers took with credit card sized gear they hardly noticed when not in use...

I have been through a number of compacts over the years, from the most basic to the prosumer models, and decided it was time to upgrade to an SLR. I chose this one after lots of digging, and haven't looked back since. It is a fantastic introduction to reflex cameras - it supports all of the professional Canon equipment, and although maybe not quite as configurable and perfect as the high range professional editions it certainly has more than enough to last the amateur photographer for many years. The layout of the camera is wonderful, its a great size and weight and doesn't laden you down, and its just brilliantly quick and usable after compacts - you won't be able to go back to your point and click days! The lense supplied with this model isn't great - I got frustrated after a month or so and got a couple of others to go with it - but I would still recommend buying the kit at first. At the very least it is enough to learn with, and it gives you an eminently usable spare in case something happens to the others. All in all - a superb product that I am extremely happy with!

Camera is excellent, good value, and nice to use.
If you are thinking about buying one, please do, you won't regret it, but be warned .....it does not come with a CF memory card, you have to order that seperately, and you cannot take pictures without it!
Now Amazon were brilliant I ordered it, and it was delivered the next day, I also ordered a memory card, now Amazon use another company called memorymegastore to provide this item, and I have been kept waiting for 7 days for it to be delivered, and it still has not arrived yet. I have sent e-mails but they ignore them, they charge [...] to deliver this item, which weighs in lighter than a feather, jiffy bag and pop it in the post, but not them. Use another company or nip round to your local Jessops.
All I can say is, that I am glad I did not order the 300m lens from them!

The 400D is excellent and will produce great shots. It's a bit plasticy when compared with the Nikon DSLRs, but if you look after it, it will provide years of service. The one thing which lets it down is the extremely poor 18-55 lens -- you'd be better off with the bottom of a milk bottle on the front of your 400D. It amazes me how Canon can produce a fabulous camera and then stick a cheap lens on the front which produces very soft, low contrast results and lets the camera down. With any camera, the most important part is the lens, do yourself a favour and buy the body only version and then get a better lens. Sadly the superb Canon L range of lenses are very expensive, much more than this camera, so a compromise is something like the Sigma 18-50mm or Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. They'll set you back about 280 pounds but the difference will be huge. Just to reinforce things -- don't skimp on the lens, it's the most important part of a camera!!

I come from a traditional SLR background, as well as using a few DSLRs, and have found this to be the easiest to use camera yet. The menu systems are very nicely organised, and newcomers to DSLRs will have no problems learning how to use it.
It has a very nice array of features for a consumer-end DSLR, some of which have been taken from the top-end models.
There are lots of negative posts on the internet proclaiming the 18-55mm kit lens bad, and that is simply not the case. The lens responds fast, and outputs high quality images - the colours are especially accurate in all the photos I've taken so far.
In response to other complaints about the grip size, I have had no problems (although I don't have the biggest hands). It's a compact, lightweight (for a DSLR) camera, that you won't be dragged down by on long hikes, for example.
I highly recommend this camera to both amateurs and professionals, as it provides many high-end features and quality photos in an easy to learn and operate design.

I bought this camera for my wife because she want to capture a kind of building as a architect. I wasn't sure that this camera is proper for my wife or not because it looks complex to treat. I dicided to buy it anyway. Now I feel it was a great dicision. There are various kind of shooting mode in this camera. For the biginner it serves a completely automatic shooting mode and some semi auto shooting mode, Also it gives a completely manual mode for experter. The best thing I love this camera is the new automatic cleaning funtion, whenever I turning on this camera it cleans a lens dust automatically. This is the best camera which I've seen.
Remember, this lens kit doesn't include the memory card. In my case, I bought a 1GB memory at the same time. I think this is enough for most user, it is possible to keep a 250 photos with a maximum resolution setting and can be saved over 1000 photos for a normal resolution setting.

I bought one of these cameras in December 2006, and it has been my introduction to the world of digital SLR cameras.
Having used Canon before I find it very user-friendly, but is let down slightly by the kit lens (EF-S18-55mm) that comes with it.
I have done head-to-head comparisons with my EF28-105mm lens on the 400D and 35mm Canon SLR and have achieved similar results. The RAW editing software provided by Canon isn't bad either and it has helped with some minor image adjustments, but don't get too carried away - it's not in Photoshop's league!
I recommend this camera to anyone interested in SLR photography but don't bother with the kit lens, which will save you around £20 towards something a bit more decent.

I use this camera to generate pictures for a website and to take photographs for submission to photolibraries. Wireless transfer of photographs is not included which is disappointing although connecting through a usb port works fine. It's worth making sure that you get the camera case that goes with the camera. The lens is OK but upgrade if you have the money.
The camera is easy to use, the dials very readable and the accompanying manual surprisingly user friendly. It is not unduly heavy and I've found it to be relatively robust since purchasing.
All in all a good buy.

What can I say. For the price this is a fab camera. The integrated cleaning system is also wonderful. Knowing friends who own the 350D it appears to be an essential part of the new upgrade. The larger viewfinder and increased mega pixels make this a must for any camera lover. Go on ... upgrade .... it will be worth it .. trust me! (my previous camera was a Fujifilm Fine Pix A370).... my life has now changed forever
