Very pleased with these filters. Well made with pretty good optics giving more than adequate results. Fit straight onto my Sigma 18-200 lens on a Canon EOS400D. Can't believe they can be sold at such a good price.

Lenses seem to be satisfactory. Not really explored full use yet. Pity the stud holding the partitions in place was useless as the two halves did not connect.

I had my canon 400d for 5 years now and I only had one problem with it (dusty switch preventing turning on and off). This camera is great for beginners and family photos, going for holidays etc. It can produce great photos if you use the right lens or you are good at photography (I managed to win a competition with this camera). If you want to get cheap and good camera I suggest you buy this one, so you are not afraid too much when taking it out in some places or afraid of damages, as you probably would be with eg. 70d... I am very happy I had this camera and I am still using it, hopefully for next couple of years.

I bought this (the 400D) 5 years ago in a duty free shop. For two years after, I had still paid less than it was in most high street shops which made me feel quite good.

I tell you why that is good: this is a Canon Digital SLR - one of the best makes of camera available. They only make good products. This is their business.

Someone once told me that a 10MP Digital SLR with good lenses will be better than almost any compact camera with higher mega pixels. He was right. Five years on, this is taking WAY better pictures than some of the best current compact cameras.

It took a while to get my head around it as it's a reasonably complex beast but when tamed, it can produce great shots - even at 10MP. There's an amazing array of lenses (Canon and otherwise) that are available as well as additional accessories. 10MP is still better quality than most people will ever need and couple it up with some decent lenses and I reckon this is a camera for life.

Of course, this really gave me the photography bug and I've taken some (so I say) great shots. I've bought books on this and Photoshop express to improve my technique and with a bit more practice, I can see myself considering giving up the day job.

The kit lens is whined about by many but very good and a great starter lens. Build quality is excellent and the camera feels solid.

I'd only now consider a newer camera on the basis this isn't a full 35mm frame. The 5D MKII is very nice but this camera is more than adequate for me and others. I've certainly done some 'unofficial' wedding pictures for friends and the outcome was better than their hired 'pro'.

Ok, it's missing some features of the bigger, more expensive cameras and newer models have improved ISO settings and the next generation of sensors but at the time of purchase this was one of the best consumer DSLRs available.

I LOVE EOS cameras in general. My father had a film version back in the day and I was hooked. This camera is lovely - and very easy to use. The battery life is brilliant and lasts a reasonable time. I've had other cameras in the past which use AA batteries and constantly had to change batteries and carry them around with me (more weight, cost and inconvenience). It's very quick to take photo's and being a Digital SLR takes photo's the moment you press the button, not one second after as with other cameras so you capture the moment - really good camera at a great price... would def recommend!

ok starting with the supplier 5 stars this arrived like new even the canon voucher book with £740 of vouchers was in the box.
brilliant is the only word on them.

then the product. i am not a pro photographer and this is the first cam i have ever bought although i have used quite
a phew in my time and read a book or two.

this is an A plus device if you ask me, took me 10 minuets to figure it all out and im still in awe.
it doesn't do film and the body isn't magnesium but i knew that and i bought it for what i knew it is and for what i paid i am chuffed. im guessing its blokes looking at this so il use a car analogy to sum up.

i looked at all the Bentleys and Jags but that wasn't in my budget so i wanted to start with something like an Ford Escort and when it arrived that turned out to be a RS cosworth

oh i paid under £200 for mine

I bought this to replace lost cameras and delved into the world of the digital SLR which I previously had sworn off doing purely for the principle. I was pleasantly surprised- having used 35mm SLRs and compact digital- this baby did make life somewhat easier and quicker when it came to shoots etc. in not having to waste film & time as you know pretty much what you've got at the time. Nothing can still beat film quality though!
I was a new graduate at this time (3 years ago) but now I am learning even more about photography and working more- I find I will probably need to upgrade to a faster camera with less noise at higher ISOs (low light conditions) and a sharper focusing. These points mentioned do not seem a problem when simply reviewing through the camera LCD screen but when viewing images on my computer screen full size, it is an issue.

The camera is not too heavy as SLRs go. It feels nice and sturdy in your hand and you can grip it well with the rubberised grip section at the side. The interface is easy to navigate, the buttons are well spaced out and concise in function. The materials used in construction are good- mine doesn't have any marks or chips etc. and I have dropped it from a short height and generally had it on rough surfaces on location for example.

The LCD display is well sized for the time it was made. As it is an SLR there is the optical viewfinder and this camera has a sensor which turns off the LCD display when you put the viewfinder to your eye. You can completely disable the LCD display to save battery power and see shooting options on the LED display inside the viewfinder (which is always visible).

You can choose between auto and manual focus with a switch on the lens and customise the points of focus in the Auto Focus setting.

Depending on the size of the images you are taking- the review time is not too slow. You can zoom in whilst reviewing an image. but not rotate.

If you simply want this camera for better holiday/ personal snaps then this is more than good enough. The depth you experience with an SLR is second to none, faster shooting, good colours & image quality and there are many ways to explore your creativity through this camera. You can explore on the manual settings as I mostly do or opt for full Auto if feeling lazy, macro for close up detail, Aperture priority, Shutter priority etc... and define your own settings to your heart's content.

As you progress you can see what works best for you but I recommend investing in accessories such as a higher spec lens depending on your style preference- I chose a CANON EF 75-300mm USM LENS which helped me when not so close to subjects and the difference in clarity is amazing. You may want to invest in an external flash also to avoid the washed out glare of the built- in one at close proximity and create better shapes.

Overall, no qualms for what this camera offers at this level. This is for amateurs moving to semi pro- don't expect anything more but you will not want to use a compact camera again I tell you now!

These lens come in a case that fits nicely into the camera bag with the camera itself, so no need to carry loads of items around with you.
The macro lens are easy to fix onto the lens of your camera.
It does take a bit of getting used to as you have to move away from the subject if too close as you can't get it in focus, which seems strange as you want to get as close as possible, also my son's camera phone took more close up pictures than my lens.

The Canon 400D is a good camera - for the price it's a great camera. It's relatively compact; lightweight; comes with an adequate lens; has programmed settings for novices - like portrait and landscape modes; but also offers manual control of apertures, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO... so that the more experienced photographers can have fun and be a little more creative. One item to note if you are upgrading from a digital compact is that you have to use the viewfinder. The screen on the back of the camera only shows exposure information, and allows you to view photographs you have already taken. It does not let you view the scene you are about to photograph. In my opinion this is a good thing because it forces you to hold the camera properly - up against your face where it can be held steadily, instead of at arms' length wobbling about all over the place.

Now the whole point of an SLR is its facility to swap lenses, so there is little point buying one unless you intend to purchase more lenses. More lenses allow you to tackle a wider variety of subject matter.

One of the first things I noticed after switching to digital from film is that digital cameras are a bit rubbish at dealing with highlights. The dynamic range is not that great. Now with film cameras if you don't like the dynamic range you just choose a different sort of film. Unfortunately you can't change the sensor or the software that processes its image in a digital camera. The 400D, I was pleased to note, handled highlights a little better than my previous three digital cameras. It also has a wonderful facility to show you areas of white (or black) that have failed to record any detail. The pixels in highlights with no detail are shown as flashing black on the camera's preview screen. So a quick glance at the screen and you can see if you need to decrease the exposure (hold the EV shift button with the thumb and twirl the wheel with your finger). I find this more useful than the brightness histogram - which is also available if you want it.

Resolution is another issue I have with digital cameras. The vast majority of digital images are a little on the soft side. It doesn't seem possible to get the crispness of focus that I'm used to with film. The lens that comes as standard with the 400D is not the greatest lens in the world and the way the end wobbles when you actually use it for manual focusing makes me think that all thoughts of quality have long since departed from Canon's philosophy. But since this kit lens costs less than £40 when you buy it with the body and it goes from a reasonable wide angle (29mm equivalent in 35mm terms) to a moderate portrait focal length (88mm equiv.) - there is nothing to complain about. It is absolutely fine for snaps and pictures printed at around postcard size. It is also more than good enough for web use. But if you want a quality lens then you need to consider spending at least another £300+. And that pushes the total price up to £650+

I bought a Canon 100mm macro and when I use that with the 400D I feel that I'm using quality equipment.

This camera has a very fast start up. You switch on the On Switch and the camera is ready for use and you can get almost 100 RAW images on a 1GB CF card.

If you like using program modes and auto exposure everything then all of that works brilliantly on the 400D. If you are an experienced photographer, or just like to experiment with taking control of exposure yourself, you will probably be as irritated as I am by the awkward combination of button, wheel, and hand position that you have to use to set the aperture in MANUAL mode.

The 400D has a lovely clear viewfinder with sufficient exposure information visible. There are none of the old (fresnel or split screen) aids to manual focusing so I didn't find that particularly easy - but the autofocus is great and very, very fast. Though (as with all autofocus cameras) you have to make sure the camera is focusing on what you want sharp in the image. To this end you can choose any one of the nine autofocus points visible in the viewfinder to be the one the camera uses or you can let the camera choose. After letting the camera have it's own way for about two days I switched them all off except the central one. I find it much easier to hold that over the subject, half-depress the shutter, and then re-frame before taking the picture. The ability to shift the focus point is quite useful though if the camera is on a tripod locked in position.

The motor drive is great and I've never yet had to wait to take a picture because the write speed from the buffer to the card was too slow. With the Minolta Dimage A1 I had previously I could only take three pictures and then had to wait several minutes.

The battery is long lasting. I think the most pictures I've taken in a session is around 500 and the battery was still working at the end of that

The lenses are surprisingly well made for the price. They feel quite durable and are smooth to attach and remove. They allow me to reduce the focus distance of my 85mm prime lens from around 1m down to about 10cm or less.

The optical quality is good. If you want to try out macro photography, or if its something that you will only use occasionally, then these £10 attachments work great and save you from having to invest in a £300 macro lens.

Ужасно

The 400D is an absolutely cracking camera body which is capable of producing great quality, razor sharp images. So why do I give the 400D/std lens combo as measly 2 star rating? Because of the std kit lens I'm afraid. (I'd give the body alone 5 stars.) What bugs me here (on behalf of other consumers) is that the buyer of this std combo just will not be getting the true potential out of the 400D body because of the particularly poor quality of the std lens.

I stress that the body is brilliant in my view - I love it - please see my separate review on the 400D body for more on that. But sadly the same quality does not extend to the standard 18-55 kit lens, either mechanically or optically.

For example...
- The inner lens tube wobbles all over the place, which makes you wonder what is actually holding it in position.
- Accurate manual focusing is impossible due to the amazingly poor design and build.
- The front element rotates during focusing which makes it next to impossible to use a polarising filter.
- The lens mount is plastic.
- The optics are shockingly poor. Don't expect sharp images, esp at the tele end. If you compare the optical performance of this lens to the Nikon std 18-55 kit lens, you could be forgiven for thinking that Canon are having a bit of a laugh. You can make up your own mind if you check out the "Reviews" section of the Photozone site (comes up via any of the search engines). Try opening two web browser sessions and size them down width ways so you can compare the two lenses side by side. I think you'll be shocked at what you see.

So why does Canon ship such a poor lens as standard with its 400D? Beats me - its reputation is widely reported in mags and online. The sooner Canon discontinue the std 18-55 lens the better - it's absolute pap and has no place on a current day DSLR, especially one as good as the 400D.

My recommendation to anyone buying the 400D is to buy the body and choose the lens separately. If you must have a Canon lens then the IS version of the 18-55 is infinitely better than the std (non-IS) 18-55 kit lens (in terms of the image quality it delivers anyway - mechanically it's not much better). I note that the IS lens is very reasonably priced these days at around 120 quid or so online. Or, if you don't mind going down the third party lens route, you could opt for the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 - a cracking lens that really does justice to the superb quality and design of the 400D. Which to choose? The Canon IS 18-55 is cheaper (and represents very good value in my view), while the Tamron 17-50 is faster and significantly better in terms of image quality. The Tamron is sharper into the image corners and sharper at the tele end too, although you might notice chromatic abberations in your image borders and corners when using the Tamron at the 17mm end with wide apertures (but these are easily taken care of by raw converters in any case).

In a nutshell, the 400D teamed up with either the Canon IS 18-55 or Tamron 17-50 will produce razor sharp images that will make your eyes pop out. You can't go wrong with either combination. But to say that the std kit lens (non IS) is best avoided would be the understatement of the year.

Happy hunting. :-)

PS: Please vote for my review if you found it helpful. :-)

I bought the Eos 400d because I liked the idea of having a decent sized screen for reviewing my pictures compared to the much smaller one on the Eos350d plus gaining an extra 2 megapixals at the same time.

First I had a play around with the 400d indoors which produced some disappointing results in full auto mode as the pictures all had a yellowish colour cast, by fiddling with the settings I could get much better results though still not wonderful, also I found the shutter delay was noticably longer than the 350d, plus when turning the camera on it took much longer before it was ready to shoot as it went through the sensor cleaning procedure. I did manage to speed things up a lot by altering the settings so that it skipped the sensor cleaning, though it remained a little slower than the 350d.
Also I found in comparison that the pictures would come out a little soft as well as it taking longer to focus, sometimes hunting for focus like an old video camera for the best part of 2 seconds. At this point I suspected my kit lens was not as good as the one that came with the 350d. So I swapped the lenses over and tested both cameras, the 350d still remained faster with sharper images whilst using the 400d's kit lens while there was no difference in the 400d's performance.
At this point I wondered if I had got a slightly duff 400d, so off I went Dixons and compared mine with their display one. Both cameras gave identical results, so after having owned a 400d for a month I got rid of it on Ebay.
I give the 400d a rating of 3 stars as its still a decent camera which is capable good results provide you persevere with its manual settings and still as fast as other leading brands of slr cameras in the same price bracket, Its just that Canons own Eos 350d performs way above its price bracket (Which had I not already owned or experienced the use of,I would have happily given the Eos 400d a 5 star rating and happily kept it)

I swapped to digital cameras with the 300d. The 400d is a major step up from that camera. I have had mine now for 2 years and have loved using it.

Good basic lens. Good recording of images. Easy to hold still and firm. Easy to review images on the sensor. Easy to use whether in the camera default modes (view/face/close up etc) or for more advanced use where you control your own apertures and exposures. Clear and detailed final images on computer screen or printed.

The camera lets me do most things I want to do.

To gild the lily, and probably to ask for more than currently can be given, I'd like a more powerful flash, image stabilisation, and an ability to hand hold long exposures in low light. When I am sensible I get my tripod out to let me do these things. But if I could get away without the tripod...

This camera is excellent, and does all you can sensibly ask a camera to do. I get superb images, and when I muck up the flaws are always mine (impatience, not using the tripod etc) and not the camera's.

Highly recommended.

I'll start by clarifying why I gave this only 3 stars, the lens is such a huge let down.

The Canon 400D in itself is a fantastic camera. The picture quality is excellent and the 10.1mp is more than enough for the amateur photographer to create extremely decent photos that can be blown up to poster size and put on the wall.

The speed of the camera is fairly decent, it shoots at 3 frames per second. Bear in mind this is an amateur camera it's very fast. The 2.5" screen is a good size to preview images and is very clear. I find the camera is very easy to use if you are new to the world of Digital SLR and yet still has enough complex features to be able to customize your photography. The 400D is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series flash. All in all, I would give this camera alone 5 stars.

The lens on the other hand is appauling. The sharpness of image is very poor, especially when stopped down, and the Bokah (clarity of deliberatly out of focus parts of the shot) is extremely poor. The lens is very noisy (which never bothered me personally) and the manual focus is almost impossible to use. This is due to the fact the focus is done by turning the barrel of the lens which is so loose it hardly feels like its attached to anything. The end of the lens turns making a polarizing filter hard to use. The lens however is light weight due to it being a plastic build, in turn I cant see it withstanding much abuse.

If you were to buy this camera I would suggest getting the body only (without the lens) and pay a little more to get the Canon EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS Lens. It costs a little over £100, doesnt have USM, but is worth it for the extra photo quality. If you have a little more than that, for around £250 look at the Canon EF 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM. This lens has a huge focal range and USM (Ultra Sonic Motion [ie. really quiet).

In conclusion, buy this kit if you are really strapped for budget. If you can afford to upgrade the lens you will be very suprised by the vast improvement over the kit lens.

n.b. on amazon this kit is now cheaper than the 400d body only package. So it might be worth buying this after all, but please please get another lens if you do!
