Excellent tool for the professional photographer. As a pro with years of experience using 1D series cameras, moving up to the 1Ds was effortless but extremely rewarding. Was making money off of prints from the camera within 72 hours. Build quality and image quality is exceptional. Responsiveness for action sports is accurate, fast and very reliable. Even in low light situations where I am using it at ISO 3200 and f2.8 and wider so that I can use shutter speeds at 1/500 and 1/1000 in high school gymnasiums and pools. So far, studio shots have been blowing me away with the image clarity, contrast and color - especially with L series lenses. Just wish I didn't have to pay the price of a used small car for it and it's impact on increasing my equipment insurance.

I've had the 1Ds Mark III for over a month now and have shot in churches, outdoors and in the studio. It excels in every environment. The first thing you'll notice is the immensely big, bright viewfinder. It barely feels like looking through something! The LCD display is very good as well. Build is very solid. I've used it with the Canon 85mm 1.2 II L and the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS L. Both deliver outstanding results and are hand-holdable. The new automatic dust-removal system is very good, leaving only a couple of spots against the blue sky when shot at small apertures, when there used to be countless on the 5D. Image quality is fantastic, and the images are huge, making cropping while retaining a big image easy. The menu system is very easy to operate, custom functions offer a plethora of options. Shutter sound is wonderful, and at 5fps very fast for 21MP. It's expensive for sure, but definitely worth it.

I upgraded from a 5D, 40D, 30D and the Mk III is the perfect camera. This camera is blazingly fast and gives me pictures that I just could not get with other cameras (e.g. shooting baseball I pretty much get "bat on ball" pics for every hitter). I shoot 6400 ISO a lot with basketball and the low noise is perfect and even much better than the 5D. I have had no issues with the AF with my "blue dot" Mk III. I think this is the perfect camera I will keep for decades to come.

Not to contradict R. Herbert who did the first review of this camera, there do appear to be some issues on the SERVO focusing on Some Lenses and Some focusing conditions.

However there are several photographers out there that have not run into any focusing issues (I'm one) and we are all sure that Canon will look into the issue and come out with a fix.

Meanwhile if you are considering this camera I would suggest that you don't let this issues turn you away from in unless you plan to shoot track and field events in the next couple of months.

The advantages of this camera over almost any other cameras in the market is amazing.

Clean ISO 3200 and a very useable ISO 6400, 10 frames per second shooting, Live view (it works!), new light battery that seems to last forever, real wheather sealed body, more customizeable options that you can think of...

What else? 14-Bit images, highlight priority mode, fine tuning of all your lenses' focusing, dual card shooting...

I had been thinking about a 5D, however when this camera came out I was amazed at all the available functions and decided to forego the full frame (Sensor size is 28.1 x 18.7 mm, a 1.28 crop factor) and go for this beauty.

If you can afford it and are considering it (and you can find one) by all means go for it, you won't be dissapointed.

I bought this camera a couple of days ago and think it is the best piece of equipment that I have ever owned.

No focus problems with this machine... except those caused by the operator. This is by far the most sophisticated camera I have ever had to learn, but am throughly enjoying the ride.

This camera hasn't improved my "photographic eye" but the photos are technically better than the ones taken with my 20D.

I had semi-switched from Nikon to Canon with the purchase of this camera. Despite reports over focusing issues, I haven't had any real problems with it. The frame rate and high ISO on it is phenomenal. Anyone whose wanting a pro-caliber camera, this unit and the Nikon D3 are, in my opinion, ought to be the top 2 choices. Having used both cameras, I have to give Nikon the nod because of its 9-fps burst at FULL frame, slightly lower noise level at high ISO, and a more accurate auto white balance. Nevertheless, the Mark III is a fantastic camera. Shooting with both Canon & Nikon is like dating a blonde & brunette at the same time. :o)

This is an update on my first review of 7/29/07 writen 3/22/08. I have owned this camera 8 months and have taken thousands of photograhps with it. I know some owners have complained about the Af but I have not had the expierence they describe. I have done sports, landscaped, and portraite photography whith this camera and it excells in every area. In ai servo I get 85-90% of my shots in focus I consider that to be very good concidering sometimes its me not the camera missing the shot. I read a review in Shutter Bug the author of the artical had given the camera to a pro sports photographer to test it. The sports photographer reported getting consistently out of focus shots when shooting slow moving traffic.
The auther took the same camera and went back to the same spot under the same conditions and was able to get consistently in focus sharp photos. So maybe some of these complaints are due to user eror and not the camera.When you consider the high iso performence and superior image quality this camera produces this is a great camera. From my personal expierence this is an outstanding piece of equiptment and I highly recomend it.

This is the best 35mm digital SLR I have ever used. The portability of a DSLR with the image quality of P22 maybe even P32 back and with out the hassle. Highly recommended for the Canon user that can afford to make the jump. Kudos on shipping as well, got it a day early, was one of the first - thanks.

The Best DSLR on the market right now, lots of people have complained about its focussing issue, what they don't know is you need to calibrate the camera with all your lenses and that eliminates the focussing problem 100%

This is an amazing camera, a big jump from 1D MkII. Better in every practical aspect. Most improvement is the lower noise level.

Overall this camera is amazing. The only problem is the focus problems that are well documented elsewhere. The mirror fix and firmware upgrade from Canon helped, but there is still a tendency for focus to drift when shooting rapid fire. However, under low light there is not any camera that even comes close to it for quality.

Have this camera for a week now and I can only say "Wow"

I have taken the best pictures in my life. I have have been able to shoot small kids (under 8 months) capturing the expressions, basically due to its "Machine gun" capability. 10 fps is best in class on its range.

EOS 1Ds Mark III just appeared a couple of weeks ago and no doubt its 21 megapixels are a breeze, however I still prefer the speed of the 1D. Also this camera has 10 megapixels at 14 bits, not 12 bits, hence the colors are astonishing and crisp clear.

SD and CF are very convenient. Also the way buttons are located are very convenient, however you have to get used to the new locations (I had a 400D).

It is HEAVY. If you have a 28-135 II USM lens, it becomes a brick, however the photos you take are amazing

No doubt this camera is an investment that will last for, at least, 3 years.

I got try the camera for a few minutes in Germany today and I am absolutely amazed of how good it felt in my hands! I thought it might be heavy and bulky, but not at all, it is very ergonomical and I didn't find it that heavy either. The funktions are almoast endless, you could spend 2 days just getting to know all the things the thing can do. the 5 pics a second at full resolution is also pretty impressive. I am already sure that I want to be one of the first to call this Camera my own! I can't wait for the release!

This new model is so good in many ways, yet is unaccepteble in its current form. It has become well known for its terrible focus issues that Canon has yet to be able to fix. Two firmware updates have been issued as a bandaid, but these have not yet fixed the problem.

I recommend you hold-off and wait for Canon to officially admit to the problem and name a fix. Yes, this focus problem is that bad. Expect to have 30-50% of your shots out of focus. Canon is investigating this and issuing firmware updates, but have yet to officially comment on it. "Let's get with it, Canon!!" Take it from me, you don't want a $5,000 camera that can't focus on STATIONARY objects, let alone, moving ones! Very frustrating!

I've owned this camera for about 3 months and it has been to the factory twice and still will not reliably focus correctly. When it does focus correctly or if I shoot landscapes in manual focus mode the images are incredible, but the AF totally sucks and is completely unreliable. It can't be trusted. I've shot hundreds of comparison shots between the 1D MkIII and my 20D and the 20D outperforms it in AF 90% of the time.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA UNTIL CANON ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM, ANNOUNCES A FIX FOR IT AND RECALLS/REPAIRS ALL THE CAMERAS THAT HAVE THE PROBLEM AND THE USER COMMUNITY AGREES THAT IT IS FIXED.

Most professional photographers have been putting this camera through its paces since its release. MAJOR FOUCUS ISSUES ... AI Servo can't track a static object let alone a moving one. see [...] to review finds. This camera has the potential to be great, but leaves us hollow and wanting.

Da ich vor einiger Zeit zwei gebrauchte Analogkameras und diverse Objektive - darunter zwei mit M42-Schraubverschluss - erworben habe, erschien es mir eine durchaus lohnenswerte Investition einen Adapter anzuschaffen mit welchem ich diese Objektive auch an meiner Canon EOS 1100D verwenden konnte.

Ursprünglich ging es mir hauptsächlich darum, ein Tele-Reflexagar 300mm (ggfs. sogar mit 2x Telekonverter) anschließen zu können; dies funktioniert auch mehr oder weniger problemlos. Dabei ist allerdings anzumerken, dass durch die Schraubvorgänge am Gewinde dermaßen viel Metallstaub entsteht, dass man aufpassen sollte, dass dieser nicht an das hintere Objektivende oder - schlimmer noch - in das Kamerainnere gelangt.

Als ich den Adapter mit einem russischen KMZ Helios 44-2 (58mm f2.0) verwenden wollte, musste ich entsetzt feststellen, dass sich das Objektiv nicht problemlos befestigen lässt - es dreht schlichtweg über! Da sich das Objektiv selbst sowohl am Telekonverter als auch an einer Zenit-E einwandfrei und präzise festschrauben lässt (da wackelt nichts!), liegt das Problem eindeutig im Adapter.

Zusätzlich möchte ich außerdem anmerken, dass der Adapter, der mir geliefert wurde, dem abgebildeten überhaupt nicht entspricht - statt der "Qualitätsware aus verchromtem Messing" erhielt ich ein schwarzes Modell, vermutlich aus eloxiertem Aluminium (auch hier auf Amazon.de zu finden, z.B. von proxistar). Ob und inwiefern dies einen Unterschied in der Verwendbarkeit ausmacht, kann ich leider nicht sagen, aber so wie es ist, scheint es reine Glückssache zu sein, welche M42-Objektive passen und welche überdrehen - schade!

Nachdem ich mir aufgrund des zuvor beschriebenen Problems mit dem Helios 44-2 von einem anderen Anbieter einen weiteren M42-EOS-Adapter gekauft habe (der, interessanterweise, der Beschreibung für diesen Artikel auf Amazon sehr genau zu entsprechen scheint), hatte ich Gelegenheit den alten Adapter mit weiteren Objektiven zu testen. So scheint tatsächlich nur das Helios überzudrehen; ein RMC Tokina 28mm 1:2.8 zum Beispiel passt perfekt, ebenso das zuvor von mir beschriebene Tele-Reflexagar 300mm. Daher habe ich die Bewertung nachträglich um einen Stern erhöht. Die 2 Punkte Abzug für den nicht der Beschreibung entsprechenden Artikel bleiben jedoch bestehen!

Zuerst möchte ich sagen, dass die Verarbeitung des Adapters einwandfrei ist, keinerlei scharfe Kanten und kein Wackeln. Sehr solide!

Die Einstellung der Objektive auf Unendlich bleibt vollständig erhalten.

Der einzige negative Punkt:
Besitzt man eine EOS 1D Mark II, steht man vor dem Problem, dass die Kamera mit dem Adapter beim Auslösen den Spiegel hochklappt, jedoch kein Bild aufnimmt (Verschluss bleibt geschlossen) und auf dem oberen Display nur "Err 01" anzeigt.
Dies wird dadurch ausgelöst, dass der Adapter im Bajonett einen Schalter betätigt, der nur bei den Canon 1er Modellen existiert (dort so weit ich weiß auch nur bei der Mark II und der Mark IIN) und dafür sorgen soll, dass die Kamera ein angesetztes EF-Objektiv erwartet, das ihr Daten liefert. Da dieser Adapter aber keinen Chip besitzt, empfängt die Kamera keine Daten und zeigt den genannten Error an.
Die Lösung des Problems besteht darin ein paar Millimeter von einem der drei herausstehenden Teile des EF-Anschlusses des Adapters (der gegenüber des roten Punkts) abzufeilen, damit der Schalter im Bajonett der Kamera nicht betätigt wird. Anleitungen dazu existieren im Internet.
Die Kamera erwartet nun keine Objektivdaten mehr und löst ohne Probleme aus. Der Adapter bleibt nach der Anpassung kompatibel zu anderen EOS Kameras.

Eine andere Alternative wäre die Anschaffung eines Adapters mit Chip und AF Confirm, der aber oftmals entsprechend teuerer ist, als der hier angebotene.

Das Problem ist eigentlich nur erwähnenswert, weil der Adapter explizit als kompatibel zur 1D Mark II gekennzeichnet ist. Das Problem tritt sonst an keiner anderen Kamera auf.

Mir hatte ein "Fachmann" gesagt, es würde keinen Spaß machen mit analogen Objektiven an digitalen Kameras zu arbeiten. Blödmann, und ob das Spaß macht. Man fühlt sich wieder in die Zeit zurückversetzt in der man ein Foto machte und darauf wartete was in der Dunkelkammer da dann rauskam. Mit dem Monitor an modernen Kameras ist das zwar in Sekunden geschehen, aber man muß vorher Blende und Zeit manuell bestimmen, was mich an meine Anfänge der Fotografie erinnnert (Opas Akarette, 50mm, keine Spiegelreflex. Entfernung, Zeit und Blende mußte man fühlen) So kompliziert ist es nicht und man kann eine Menge Geld sparen. Einzig der fehlende Bildstabilisator ist etwas schwierig, aber dafür gibt es ja Stative. Wenn man diesen recht preiswerten Adapterring hat, kann man die guten alten Objektive noch nutzen. Da meine alle sehr lichtstark sind, ist es für mich ein großer Gewinn für kleines Geld. Passt aber auch nur wirklich gut an Originalobjektive und nicht gut an Fremdfabrikate.

Der Adapter lies sich nicht in meine Kamera einsetzen, schuld daran ist die vermutlich falsch positionierte Stoppschraube, nach dem entfernen der Schraube lies er sich dann verwenden. Die gesamte Verarbeitung lässt sehr zu wünschen übrig, da der Adapter sehr scharfkantig ist, immer wenn ich das Teil anfasse hab ich angst das ich mich gleich schneiden werde. Außerdem hält der Objektiv-Rückdeckel nicht an dem Teil, also muss der Adapter, nach dem Benutzen, entweder immer abgeschraubt werden oder man träg sein Objektiv ungeschützt mit sich rum. Einzig das M42-Gewinde ist vernünftig geschnitten, zumiendest lässt er sich sauber auf meine Objektive aufschrauben. Da sich der Adapter, trotz seiner Mängel, verwenden lässt und wenigsten das Gewinde ohne Probleme funnktioniert gebe ich ihm 2 Sterne, rate aber trotzdem vom kauf ab. Zum Glück gibt es genug Alternativen, da ist mit Sicherheit was besseres dabei.

Habe schon mehrere Adapterringe für M42 Objektive auf verschiedene Fabrikate bestellt, doch bisher keinen dieser Qualität!

Bereits beim Auspacken war ich vom Gewicht des Rings positiv überrascht, ein eindeutiges Plus und keineswegs als selbstverständlich anzusehen, gerade in dieser Preisklasse.
Der Adapter ist allgemein wirklich hochwertig verarbeitet, keine scharfen Kanten, kein Hängen oder Schleifen beim Einrasten, alles sehr sauber und bündig.
Ebenso kein Wackeln, das Objektiv sitzt optimal.

Ich kann den Artikel wirklich jedem empfehlen der seine alten Schätze an einer Canon DSLR verwenden möchte. Preis-/Leistung ist hervorragend!

Viel kann ich zu diesem Adapterring nicht sagen. Auffallend positiv stach mir sofort die wirklich perfekte verarbeitung ins Auge. Das Teil ist einfach aus massivem Metall und sitzt an meiner 70D perfekt und rastet auch richtig ein. Allerdings hätte ich mich über einen Chip an dem Adapter gewünscht, damit die Kamera auch anzeigt, wann ein objekt scharf ist. Diese gibt es auch von der Konkurenz...ich habe es aber vor dem Kauf nicht gewusst. Ich behalte diesen Adapter trotzdem, da ich bisher damit super zufrieden bin. Mein m42 objektiv funktioniert damit auch einwandfrei.

Ich kann mich nicht über den Adapter beschweren, habe mittlerweile 2 davon, die ich dauerhaft am jeweiligen Objektiv lasse. Wenn man das Objektiv nicht auch noch ohne Adapter benötigt, empfiehlt es sich, den Adapter mit ordentlich Kraft aufs Objektivgewinde zu drehen, damit er beim Objektivwechsel nicht aus Versehen am Body hängen bleibt.
durch den inneren Ring des Adapters wird auch der Blendenhebel des Objektivs ganz gedrückt, sodass man das Objektiv vernünfitg abblenden kann, egal ob im A- oder im M- Modus.

Habe den Artikel gekauft, um damit meine alten Fotoobjektive mit M42 Gewinde wieder verwenden zu können. Des weiteren kann ich nun auch die digitale SLR auch an mein Teleskop anflanschen.
Der Adapter hatte für mich vollkomen ausreichende Qualität: nichts hakelte oder klemmte oder war schwergängig. Er passte "wie angegossen" auf den Bajonettverschluss der Canon EOS 650D. Aber auch das M42 Gewinde lies sich anstandslos auf die alten Objektive bzw. den Teleskopadapter schrauben.
