I actually purchased this scanner for one project ... it was very easy to hook up, very easy to get started and very easy to understand the menue features... I used it at it's highest resolution with all it's filtration features turned off, such as contrast, un-sharp mask, ect... I wanted to work on the image in photo-shop... The quality was very good... in fact I would say it was great... and for $85 it was amazing... price value this is a great scanner...

Have had good luck in most respects. Start out with a quality photo - get a quality scan no problem. If you start out with a "dark" photo that should have had a bit more flash used, etc, then it's difficult to lighten the photo. Other than that, no problems - does what it's supposed to.

I just got this scanner about 10 days before Christmas. I've been very pleased - it exceeds all my expectations.I got it for two reasons: (1) my old scanner does not work with Windows XP, and (2) I've been wanting a good scanner for slides and negatives for many years, but decided to wait until technology and price improved. Well, it was worth the wait! I've already scanned several dozen color slides as well as several negatives and other images. The quality of the slide and negative scanning was excellent! And the speed is great compared to my old scanner. I've not tried all the bells and whistles yet, but everything I've tried so far works very well. Using the slide holder is a little tedious, but for the price I am extremely pleased.I did considerable research before buying this scanner, and quickly learned that Canon is definitely the way to go for quality film/slide scanners. I first planned to order a Canoscan model that I later found out was discontinued, but this one is a newer model and seems to be as good or better, from what I can tell thus far.I'll supplement this review if necessary once I've used the scanner some more.

I bought this to scan pictures, for use at my daughters wedding, to put on a digital picture frame. It worked really well, it was user-friendly, and we were able to save everything to a flash drive, to plug in to the frame. I would recommend this product. I have owned 3 scanners and this is by far the most user-friendly that I have owned!

I have had this scanner since the week Canon released it. Although I am by no means a professional, I use this scanner almost every week. I feel that the image quality is excellent, it scans quickly, and if I need to, I can do some very high resolution scans. (Most of my scans are around 300dpi, but it can do 1200dpi). The software for OS X is a little bit of a let down sometimes, but I would say 99% of the time, I have had no problems. It is a little bit noisy, but for the price, size and performance, I could care less. I have used the film feature maybe once or twice, and I was relatively pleased with the results, again, I am not a professionalGoing on its third year of art school, I would say this scanner is nearly bulletproof.

I had an old Canon flatbed that gave up the ghost, so was looking forward to this new one, especially because it has a film adapter. First, and foremost, Canon's powering through the single USB cable is excellent and should be industry standard. However, it should be said that this is a film ONLY adapter - that is, it does NOT do slides (which seems like a bit of a bait; my bad for assuming, but the software does have the option of scanning positive film, so it seems like a important omission). More to the point, even when film strips/negatives are laid on the glass with the adapter, the results are slow, slow, slow and not very sharp. My suggestion: don't bother with the LiDE80 for film; just save$30 and get the LiDE65 for flatbed only. MacOSX interface is getting clunkier from generation to generation. Software bloat, I guess.

I had been thinking of getting a dedicated 35 mm film scanner for several years but was put off by the price and that fact that those types of scanners do only one thing - scan film. So my expectations were exceeded when I hooked up my new CanoScan 4200 last night and scanned a slew of old negatives and found most of the results to be excellent. I don't have a professional film scanner available to compare to, but I believe that the quality of these scans to be more than adequate for the kinds of photos that most regular people take. ( I would call myself a "serious amateur.") I am certain that the prints I get from these scans will be far better than the original, aging prints which had previously been all I had to look at, so in this alone the CanoScan will have fulfilled its mission as far as I'm concerned. I had tried to scan film with my previous flatbed scanner (which was not designed to accept film) with poor results, so I had pretty low expectations for this item at such a low price, but I was very pleasantly surprised. My only gripe is that when previewing the scan, the interface seems to want to automatically adjust the level of brightness of the preview, causing it sometimes to be completely black or completely white, and I can't figure out a way to turn this off. But I don't think this auto level feature affects the final scan when you have the automatic settings turned off. I found the metal (?) film holder to be well-designed and reasonably easy to use, but don't expect fast, effortless scans - you have to handle and load the film carefully, and a hi-res scan can take a couple of minutes. The maximum resolution of 3200 dpi generates large, clear jpg files for a typical 35 mm photo, on the order of about 4000 x 3000 pixels, which is plenty good for a 8 x 10 print. This is my fourth scanner in ten years and it is by far the best, so if your scanner is a few years old, quit wasting your time and get this scanner!

I have frequent difficulties getting computer peripherals to work the first time out on my computer; maybe everyone does, I don't know. Thankfully though this scanner was recognized by my nearly 4 yr old Dell Dimension PC (Windows XP SP2 with latest updates) the first time out and the software seemed to install just fine.I have scanned many documents so far and am very satisfied with the results thus far. I have scanned some 3-dimensional objects as well and think that it is great that you can do that.I think that it is interesting that this scanner has no on/off mechanism (button or switch) but is "turned-on" only by plugging in the AC adapter. The scanner will turn-off itself after a time of not using it, but I have not been able to determine just how many minutes that is.I recommend this scanner to all of you who are looking for a very affordable and capable flatbed scanner.

The product is easy to use and the scan quality is good. I haven't tried scanning in film yet, but having the feature is a plus. I purchased this scanner a few months ago and used it a few times and was initially very pleased. Then all of the sudden something failed and the scanner would not communicate with my computer and eventually the power failed on the unit. In the interim, I spent a good deal of time, uninstalling & reinstalling the software and driver in an attempt to fix the issue. I went to the Canon website and tried to troubleshoot, without success. When I called Canon, they were very helpful and shipped out a new replacement within two days, along with a prepaid label to return the damaged scanner.

I have had this scanner for a couple of years and I loved it with my old Windows 98 computer and my Mac OS 9.0 laptop. Then I bought a Mac Mini with OS 10x. I have had compatibility nightmares ever since.I found out that it'll work with OS 10 IF and ONLY IF I install Adobe PhotoShop or Elements. Why should I have to spend $100 or more on software to get an $80 scanner to work? So, I got my laptop back out and started scanning and working on my graphics files on the laptop, where I have expensive programs that I cannot yet afford to replace. But in order to get an external CD Burner to work I had to upgrade to OS 9.1.Now, after just upgrading from Mac OS 9.0 to 9.1 I have to go through the whole process of troubleshooting again. I've already spent half a day in total frustration. This scanner should be off the market - without new drivers it's totally useless. It's more of a shame because I had liked it very much until a couple of months ago. There should be no reason for Canon and/or Mac to get appropriate drivers up and online.

The quality of the scans are terrible and the time required to get a preview of the scan on the screen is almost a minute! If you are trying to hold a text book open and flat against the bed that is way too long. This scanner doesn't compare with an old HP scanner that only scanned at 300 dpi!

I am very happy with this scanner. It is actually a refreshing experience. I bought an hp about a year ago and it immediately crashed my computer.Since then I was wary of buying another scanner, but finally broke down and decided to try this one because I needed it for my freelance cartooning work and the price was right. I needed something to scan black ink lines (sometimes very thin or textured) accurately and smoothly. This little scanner did the trick. I've only had it for a couple months and it does what I need. The software is easy to use and the set up is simple. The scanning is a bit slow (waiting for it to warm up the light then scan), but I can certainly live with that seeing how much easier this thing has made my work.I've scanned color photos as well and it seemed to work with that too. Sometimes I use photos for different projects, but so far I havent scanned photos for serious work. So that is still somewhat untested. But for just scanning holiday snaps to email or whatever, it works just fine. Conclusion: So far so good! Best scanner I've had (and that includes another ridiculous and more expensive hp that I have at the office)...

Well, It looks like I'm going to be the disagreeable odd-ball person on this review page. I like this scanner. Mainly I like its size and weight. Thin-line is perfect for my desk and the scanner is quick and efficient. I use the advanced features for scanning, cropping the image rather than using the default of scanning the whole bed.I find the colors to be true when compared to the original photograph. If you scan at a high resolution with any scanner, you should be happier than anything of a low resolution. So, read the features and the implementation of them and you'll be happy, too. The Canoscan was the right price for what I needed. I wasn't into capturing slides, so that wasn't important to me. There were cheaper models, but I passed them up. There were more expensive models with features I didn't need. The bundled software comes with an OCR program which I've used repeatedly for scanning textbook pages. Another plus for the price.Because this scanner is so portable I can move it around and simply plug it in to the front USB connection on my PC whenever I have the need to use it.No problems with drivers, etc. I'm using Windows XP.Gail Gupton, Author: The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment and Seekers of Truth.

An excellent scanner. Have had no trouble with the scanner or the software supplied with the unit. All of the software as well as drivers supplied on the bundled CDs have worked without problem with Windows XP. Already have a lot of time logged on the unit scanning magazine articles for storage on CD because I no longer have room for the magazines. Circuitry/software does a great job of automatically compensating for old magazines where yellowing of the paper has occurred. Somewhat unhappy that I cannot register the bundled PhotoStudio software to qualify for upgrades, whereas the other software supplied can be registered.

I purchased the LiDE 80 from another vendor about a year ago. Worked fine for 11 months and then I started to get some relatively minor errors from the software. May have to do with upgrade to Windows XP SP2, I don't know.I called up the Canon Tech Support people (they are nice and very knowledgeable), and they told me to uninstall and then reinstall the scanner. Okay, fine. I do this for hardware all the time. However, ever since, I have been unable to reinstall the device, either with drivers from the OEM CD or from the Canon website. My operating system simply does not accept these drivers--when I install them, it is like nothing happened. The hardware installation wizard DOES NOT work for this scanner, presumably because the drivers are not "digitally signed" (translation--Canon didn't pay Microsoft a lot of money; that's okay with me as this would propagate into the price of the scanner, however it still needs to function properly to have any value). So basically I am stuck with a piece of equipment that is useless to me. My computer is a Dell that is only 6 months old--this should be able to work.In conclusion, the scanner is very nice when it works but the operating system is lousy...

Although I love my Canon LiDE80 scanner, it will not scan 35mm slides, so I ordered a CanonScan 4200f. For documents, this scanner seems just as fast as the LiDE80--which is high praise. For film (35mm negatives or mounted slides), the scanning process is m---u---c---h slower, but effective nevertheless. The integrated film holder will take a 4-frame 35mm film strip or 2 mounted 35mm slides (even glass mounts!) and it's possible to scan all of the frames or slides in a single operation, though not in a single scanning pass. The 4200f is driven by one of Canon's typically excellent interface programs and this one offers PDF image scanning in addition to the typical options. Some reviewers have complained about the 4200f's "paper" or "paper-like" film scanner cover. These folks need some material recognition training: the cover in question is made of light, strong plastic, not paper. It seems very sturdy to me.I've docked this unit one star only because of its slow film scanning speed.

SCANNER IS SLOW: Since it's a USB2.0 device, I didn't really think much about how long it would take to transfer an image to my computer. The answer is: A really long time. The scan itself happens quite quickly, but the actual transfer takes about 100 seconds per 3x5 photo at 300dpi.SUPPORT SUCKS: I thought something was wrong so I sent a note off to their email support. I explained that my USB port was functioning perfectly, but I got some stupid canned response back that, more than anything, demonstrated that they just didn't read the email. I replied asking for a more thorough readthru of my note and they simply never wrote back.SCANNING NEGATIVES IS DIFFICULT: I won't bore you with the details, but basically, somebody important left the room when they were designing the software for scanning negatives. The fundamentals are all there, but you're forced to preview each frame, even though the negative frame holder is held in a fixed area. It makes bulk scanning cumbersome for no reason. I've heard others complain about this little gaff.OVERALL: The image quality is good. If you're scanning the odd photo or negative, it's a good choice. If you want to scan a lots of images, this thing is just going to frustrate you to death.

I love the image quality on the scans. Scans of negatives are excellent (although I can't compare to a true film scanner). Scans of photos are great, too. Compared to the Epson 4180 I returned, image quality of negatives is MUCH better on the Canon. The software was easy to install on my Windows XP computer. However, I've had some annoyances with this scanner. I still give it 5 stars because image quality is my priority, and I don't do a high volume of scanning.* I had to return 2 scanners because of particles under the glass. If you look closely, you can see some "ferning" patterns and white dots near the top of the glass where the light rests (in the EXACT same place on both scanners!). Canon says they apply an anti-glare coating to the underside of the glass which may look foggy or hazy. I'm not sure what happened with my first 2 scanners, but the 3rd has no artifacts under the glass.* The cover for the film scanning light is a flimsy paper thing. As well, you cannot scan many negatives at once. If you scan a good quantity of film, this would be bad. For me, it's not much of an issue.* No driver for Macs.* So-so photo-editing software. Again not an issue for me since I already have great software.

The image quality is very, very good for a scanner of this price. The size is convenient, the use of USB 2 for power is convenient, the scanner looks good. It's fast at 300 dpi, slower at 600 dpi, and remarkably slow at 1200 dpi.Two issues, however. First: the box says max resolution of 2400 x 4800; the software shows a max resolution of only 1200 dpi. Yes, 99 times out of 100, 1200 dpi is plenty; but why market as 2400 dpi then? Second: with the exception of the included copy of Photoshop Elements 2.0 (a great deal), the software for OS X is horrible. The installer requires classic to run; and the installer is not necessarily successful in running. I downloaded an update to the drivers, and that was set to run in classic, even though it will only run in native OS X (not classic). I ended up having to install the CD, download the update, and copy the install script from the CD to the correct location in the update to get that installed, and then make an alias in one of the library folders. Compare this to the process for installing a digital camera: just plug it in. So while I'd recommend this as a nice home scanner for the price (don't expect the quality of a professional scanner), I'd also recommend that Canon do something about their installation software.

I had much the same experience as Outis Nihil (below). The software package is apparently designed for OS 9. There is a separate OS X folder with installation drivers for each separate package, rather than the all-in-one installation driver for OS 9. In order to get the scanner to function under OS X, OS 9 installation is required, then you need to download the OS X driver upgrades from the Canon USA website. This allows direct scanning via Photoshop; I haven't tried anything else at the time of this writing. This is not revealed in their instructions, which are pretty much useless. Also, as mentioned, 1200 dpi is apparently the maximum scanning resolution, which makes their claim of 2400dpi not merely deceptive, but very simply a LIE. This claim needs to be retracted immediately from all their literature. The imaging results are very good and I'm happy with that. For that reason and the great price I've decided to keep the unit. Time will tell if the hardware is long lasting. The metal lid is a bit thin (admittedly contributing to the device's lightness and portability) but will easily be nicked, scratched, or dented over time with even moderate use.Hardware: B+, Software: D

One day later, I installed a USB 2.0 card for her, and the scans are significantly faster.) We scanned negatives and slides and the results were excellent. The software works quite well, and the media autodetection works great. Mom pops two slides in, hits the scan button, and comes back a few moments later and pops two more in. The software crops the scan, drops it on the hard drive under My Pictures, and doesn't require any user intervention. I bought this thing to convert some of my negatives to digital. First off you have to use a clumsy Fare 2.0 module which plugs into the scanner and fits on top of the negative into the 35mm film adapter. This is not a good idea becuase you can only do one negative frame at a time. Also it doesnt seem to push down on the negative to make it flat. Negative scans are horrible, its comparable to a 1-2 mega pixel digital image.Regular photo scans are not to shabby. The image detail seems good enough but the color accuracy is off. Only thing saving the color is Photoshop Elements.

Scope of use and review: I use a scanner primarily for OCR and for capturing black and white photos. After several years of good service, my HP 6200C has turned into a nightmare: for some reason it began to require a 15-30 minute battle, after which it sometimes did scan -- and sometimes did not. So I bought an HP 3970, only to find another nightmare with the software: I took the HP 3970 back. In fact the HP 3970 was such a disappointment that I struggled to keep working with my HP 6200C for a few months, despite taking 15 minutes or more to get it to scan.I am extremely pleased with the Canon LiDE 80. It is fast and very easy to use. The OmniPage SE OCR software that comes with it does a very respectable job. And the scanner easily fits into my laptop bag for travel -- plus there are no power cords to haul along. The fact that it uses LED rather than a bulb also is a plus -- one less maintenance problem to worry about, one less thing to worry about in travel. I have already done more in a month with the LiDE than I was able to do with the HP 6200C in the last six months.

Never had a product that claimed to be compatible with Mac that is SO incompatible that it's a joke. Don't waste your money on this if you're using OSX. It's a truly lousy piece of equipment, and the software is terrible. I'm giving mine away.

I bought this scanner on sale for about $90 so I could scan negatives and film. Pros: It installed easily on my HP WinXP machine, it is satisfactory in speed, it scans negatives well, its small, and it does not require a separate power block. Cons: Its a bit noisy. I would not recommend it for the photo professional, buts its certainly a good amateur scanner and is also quite portable.

Pros: Small and compact. Powered through USB. Does great with 35mm negatives.Cons: Poor scan quality.I bought this scanner along with the Epson 2480 to test. Although tedious with scanning 35mm film, the color and scan quality is great. But for scanning pictures and other items, the scan and weak, and the color washed out (greens come out too yellow, blues much lighter in comparison with the 2480 which I would give 5 stars for scan quality). There is also a horizontal banding in the scans which is very noticable when the image is printed.I would recommend this only if you wanted to scan film and didn't really care to have a high quality scan of anything else.

I recently bought this scanner. Its a great device. Small, light, produces good scans. The drivers and software provided for Mac OS X are pathetic. I have had many other Canon products before (printers & cameras) and they have always had good software. So, I am really astonished. This scanner is less than 10 days old and I am strongly considering returning it for one with better Mac OS X support.

I was rather unimpressed with the cheap cardboard-like slip cover that you have to remove to scan in 35mm film strips. After 20 scans, the scanner stopped working. I emailed cannon support and after a few emails, they informed me that the scanner was defective. Wonderful. Next time, I'm getting an Epson.

Good:This unit is an industrial design gemSpeed increase is very noticable over my older CanoScan N1220USoftware for Windows XP is decent (lots of options)Includes both TWAIN and WIA driversNo transformer block/AC cord to deal withBundled with USEFUL, quality software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and ScanSoft OmniPage SEBad:Scanning film negatives is a PAIN IN THE ASS (scanning one at a time and FORCING you to do a preview first - very tedious and time consuming)A bit louder than my older CanoScan N1220U during SOME processesOverall, scan quality is good and I think Canon put together a fantastic package.

Just bought this scanner and tested it with text, photo, film, and slide. It did an amazingly good job on all. The bundled software worked great. OCR handled text great. Installation was super easy on XP pro machine (install software and hook up scanner -- ready to go!). No hassles. Looks great too. It's a low cost scanner (had been looking at a more expensive one but decided to save money). This scanner performs beyond my expectations.

For the money the Canon LiDE 80 is ideal for most users. The scanner will scan at 2400 dpi, but only in the mode the really matters, film (negative) and slide (positive) mode. The Canon LiDE 80 does this to prevent you from generating a large, and most of the time unnecessary file. For most users 300 to 600 dpi is all you need correctly digitize your image. If you want full control, you need to invest to the next level of scanners which will probably triple in price.
