This is a great, inexpensive scanner. Very easy to learn how to use, clear instructions, good quality. Excellent value for money. No problems installing software to Windows XP. Just have to be careful not to damage the lid in raising and lowering it.

I have had my scanner about a year and am reasonably happy with it. The buttons on the scanner can be programmed, so the labels are somewhat useless. (Who wants four different PDF buttons on their scanner?) Mostly, I use the CanoScan Toolbox to set up the scanning, and it has many features that I don't seem to need. I do like the feature of saving the image to a file AND opening software to edit the image; however, it took a while for me to realize I needed to set up every box on the menu every time I scanned something different. (It automatically saves to the same folder as last time and adds a suffix number to the file name.) I would like to have a warm start mode for the lamp, as the warmup time is quite long for every scan. Scanned images are very good, you can have very fine resolution, and you can't beat Canon for picture quality. Since I don't use the scanner every day, I would buy another like it or similar, just for the picture quality. If I used it a lot, I would look for a model with faster warmup. The next version of software should be easier to use. Some day, I want to scan my old slides, but I have never tried that feature.

This scanner was a replacement for a much bulkier model and I love it. The thin profile means I can slip it into my laptop bag and it powers off the USB port so there are no bulky power cords to worry about storing. I use this scanner mostly for photographs and negatives, though I am thinking of moving to an all digital archive because the scan quality on documents is so good. The software is easy to run and chock full of great features. I have a Canon digital camera as well so the photo editing software works well with my existing software. I highly recommend this scanner for ease of use and quality of output.

I simply love the Canon CanoScan 4200F flat scanner for prints and films. It's fast (both in scanning and transfering to the PC), quiet, and has superb scan quality, esp. on 35mm negatives. (I haven't tried scanning 35mm slide films.)Setting the 4200F up is pretty much a breeze, assuming you have Windows XP. (Windows 98 users will need to follow the instructions very carefully.) You first install the software -- the scanner driver and the scan toolbar (called "toolbox") are the only programs necessary for using the scanner; the other applications (photo editing, OCR and Adobe Acrobat) are optional. After restarting your machine (so the scanner driver loads and runs as a service), just connect the USB 2.0 hi-speed cable, and you are set to go.Using the scanner is also quite simple. You can scan in three ways: directly from your photo organizing or editing program (assuming it supports the universal TWAIN interface, which most imaging programs worth their pennies do); using the Canon Scan Toolbox; or pressing one of the four buttons on the scanner itself, which calls up the toolbox and automatically initiates a scan. The four buttons are:- Copy. Your PC must be connected to a powered-on printer for this to work. When you press copy, the Canon scans and sends the file directly to your printer.- Scan. This is the button for scanning. When you press it, the Canon scans and sends the scanned image to your designated photo editing program, which you specify once via the toolbox. (This button corresponds to the "Scan 1" icon on the toolbox.)- PDF. This turns the scanned image into a PDF file.- E-mail. This button scans and then calls up Outlook Express or Outlook with the image embedded as a JPEG attachment. The toolbox (toolbar) has more options for scanning. All are pretty straightforward. Each option can be configured in detail, or you can specify that all the settings be done in the driver itself. (The toolbox is simply an interface to the driver.) If you configure things in the driver, you'll even be able to adjust how the scanned image should look, in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, etc., etc. The options are endless, but in the beginning, using the toolbox makes scanning a breeze and less intimidating. One thing cool about the Canon is how it makes it easy to understand what resolution you should scan in. First, the 4200F is capable of 3200x6400 dpi (dots per inch). The 3200 dpi is its true optical resolution; that's how much fine details it can detect. The second number, 6400 dpi, refers to its "stepping" levels, which basically means the sensor can sample each inch 6400 times, but only detects up to 3200 dots. When you scan, the Canon asks you what *output* resolution and size you want, and then calculates the necessary input resolution for you. Say you are scanning a 4x6" photo but want to be able to print it 4 times as large (or twice the width and length, i.e., 8x12") and print at 300 dpi. The Canon will then automatically set the correct scan resolution of 600 dpi -- which is twice as much as printing 4x6 at 300 dpi. So you'll get a 2400x3600 file in pixels, which can then be printed at 8x12" at 300 dpi (2400/8=3600/12=300dpi). This concept of specifying output resolution rather than worrying about input resolution works esp. well for scanning negatives. Say you are scanning a 35mm negative. It'd be a pain to figure out which scanning resolution is best. But if you know you'd eventually want to print a 4x6" photo in 200 dpi, just tell the driver so, and the driver will do all the work for you and scan properly.Another feature I love is multi-scan, which lets you scan in several pictures at once and the driver automatically separates them. Here's how I use my 4200F:I set up the scan button so it's linked to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3's organizer. (You can link the button to any TWAIN-compatible program.) When I press the button, the scanner automatically scans multiple pictures I place on the glass, and separates them (and straightens them if necessary) into individual pictures. I have a checkbox called "confirmation of EXIF" checked, which allows me an opportunity to scan in more pictures before sending them all at once to Photoshop Elements 3. This really saves me a lot of time, without having to switch between the scanner driver and Photoshop Elements after each scan. Finally, when I'm done with scanning all the photos, I click the Forward button, and the driver automatically launches Adobe Photoshop Elements (if it's not already open) or switches to it, and sends over the newly scanned pictures. This process works equally well for photo prints and negatives. It sounds longer than it actually is. As with any scanning, it's replacing the photos on the glass or in the negative holder that is the most time-consuming part.Compared to my previous scanners and even many more expensive scannesr on the market today, the CanoScan 4200F is lightyears ahead in scan qualit

I've used several scanners over the last dozen years, and I was worried that this one might suffer from over-simplification (the one-button interface) or over-complication (the "toolbox" of software)... or both! So I was pleasantly surprised to see that Canon found a very satisfactory middle ground, making this unit easy for beginners and flexible for experienced users. The quality of the scans is very good, and the software fits right into other tools. I was particularly happy to see that not only does this scanner produce PDFs, but the OCR (optical character recognition) software is very accurate. My one gripe, relatively minor, is that the top of the scanned page is positioned towards the hinge, not towards the front opening. I've had scanners which were oriented in both directions, and I always prefer being able to put the top of the book (or picture or other item being scanned) near me - having it near the hinge makes it a longer reach, and harder to get lined up just right. Still, that's a personal preference, and faced with this scanner's high performance and low price, I can put up with such things!

Needing to replace my really ancient Visioneer scanner for importing 35mm slides and negatives into CS2 at a higher quality, I settled on the buying either the Canon 8600F or the 4400F. As I see it, the 8600F is an industrial-strength version of the lightweight 4400F, but costs about $70 more. The 8600 is somewhat bigger and weighs 50% more than the 4400F, but otherwise they're pretty much identical in capabilities and operation. In fact, Canon's website shows identical sales blurb for both the 4400F and the 8600F. The supplied software (CanoScan Toolbox, ArcSoft PhotoStudio, NewSoft Presto PageManager, ScanSoft OmniPage SE) are identical for both the 4400F & the 8600F. The PS Elements 5.0 included with the 8600F was not important since I use CS2. The only unknown is what exactly is the difference between the 8600F's "built-in FARE Level 3 retouching technology" and the 4400F's "built-in retouching technology." I suspect it's nearly the same. So I bought the 4400F from Amazon (best price).Installation was a snap and the first scan came out as expected. A bit slow, but all decent resolution scans are slow regardless of who makes the scanner unless you want to spend big bucks. The only negative is the lack of a power button on the 4400F (if you're like me, you'll always forget to pull the plug when you've finished scanning). Although it'd be easy to put a switch on the power cord, the switch would have to be located near the plug socket, so a switch really wouldn't be all that much helpful. The net of all of this is that if you plan to do some really heavy-duty scanning and also would like to utilize Photoshop Elements 5.0 for image enhancing, go with the 8600F. Otherwise, use the 4400F.My crude comparison of Canon's 8600F and the 4400F:-----------------------------8600F---------4400FWeight:-------------------- 9.3 pounds---6.2 poundsHeight:--------------------- 4.9 inches---3.3 inchesWidth:--------------------- 11.3 inches--10.2 inchesDepth:--------------------- 18.6 inches--18.7 inchesOn/off button------------- yes------------noPhotoshop Elements 5.0- yes------------no ($43 @Vio)Built-in FARE Level 3----- yes-------------? retouching technologyCost:---------------------- $160--------- $92

One of the biggest reasons I was looking at the ConoScan 4400F was that Consumers Guide rated it at the best buy so I checked around and I believe they were right. I have used it now for a while and it does a great job on everything that I have scanned. It does a great job on 35mm slides. This is the main reason I was looking for a scanner that would do 35mm slides. I have not tried any film negatives yet but will be done soon. I have been scanning some of my family's old pictures which have been doing an excellent job. Some of the scanned pictures even looks better then the originals. The size of the scanner is a lot smaller then most of the others. It is a great scanner in a smaller package!Another feature that is nice is the buttons on the front. It would be nice to make it a bit longer so you could scan legal size documents.I also like the CanoScan 4400F because it was Windows Vista Compatible. The size of the scanner is a lot smaller then most of the others. I was looking for some way to get my thousands of film negatives converted to digital images. I checked out some services, but they wanted around 60 cents/image. I figured it would be cheaper to just get a film scanner. I already have a CanoScan LiDE60, but it doesn't have the film scanner function, so I got a 4400F. Man, is this thing great. It is super easy to use. Just put the negatives in the holder push the film scan button and about 4 minutes later, you've got your digital images automatically saved to your computer. The conversion from negative to picture comes out perfectly. I haven't even had to Photoshop any of them. Once I get them all loaded, I'm going to burn them to a CD.For a $100 scanner, this thing is really good and easy to use.

Its difficult to find comparison specs between some of the new CanoScans. After looking at both the 4400F and 8600F, besides the 8600F's ability to scan medium-format negatives and being bundled with a lite version of Photoshop, the 8600 is also simply a more heavy duty machine.A significant difference is the lid. The 8600 has metal hinges and adjusts vertically on metal supports. It will also stay open through 90 deg of motion. The 4400 has a plastic hinge. To accomodate books or thick materials, it has a "break-away" articulating hinge-- when you place something of thickness like a book on the flatbed the lid hinge snaps open to accomodate the item. The 4400 hinge will not stay open on its own. Both lids are rather heavy and solid (the 8600's more so) which is nice if you scan books or things that need to lie flat. But since the 4400's hinge is all plastic and has a small piece of plastic that locks the articulating or adjusting part of the hinge, it does not really seem to lend itself to lots of book scans. It seems like this latch or lock will eventually break; as is, it sounds like its breaking each time it snaps open to accomodate a book. (Since I make a lot of book scans I decided that the 8600 was better for this, because of its lid's adjustment and hinge construction and because of its heavy lid, despite the extra money. If I was typically scanning from photocopies or thin origins, the 4400 would have been fine.) A last thing about the lid construction: the 8600 also has a heavy-duty cable to power the light in the lid, while the 4400 provides power to the lid by a thin tape cable that is visible in the hinge and seems somewhat vulnerable to heavy use.Otherwise these scanners seem to have the same technology, with the except of FARE (film automatic retouching and enhancement) scratch and dust reduction filter on the 8600. The CanoScan Toolbox software works well. Both have programmable buttons which allow for semi-automated scanning. The multiple-page PDF scanning is great. (This was one of the main reasons that I bought one of these scanners.)As to speed, although the scans are fast when they get going, it takes some time for the scan to actually get going. (How this compares to other scanners I can't say.)A last feature is that the 8600 has an on/off switch, which the 4400 does not.All in all, although the 8600 is billed as a scanner for photography professionals, it has some features that make it attractive to anyone who does a lot of scanning.

I've been using this scanner for about a week now on my MacBook, OS X 10.4. It's a little bit slower than expected at scanning, but much faster than my old non-USB scanner. The scanner also seems to take a while (~1-2 minutes) to adjust the lamp after some hours of inactivity before scanning. I would think the 8600F would be a little faster, but this is fast enough for my needs. The buttons on the front panel for 1-button scanning work fairly well. There's a button among other things to "copy," which scans and then without any further user action prints the scan to the default printer. Very useful. One trick I just discovered: when scanning a PDF (single or multiple pages) with the front-panel buttons, the driver actually OCRs the scan before making it into a PDF - the resulting PDF file looks like a normal scan, but the computer will actually recognize (hopefully) each letter, so you can use a PDF viewer like Preview (on the Mac) or Adobe Reader to search for words in the scan. Nice scanner.

I bought this scanner to replace my Canon Lide 35. I wasn't happy with that one as the quality of the scans seemed only adequate, but it was the only scanner I could find at the time that was the right physical size to fit on the sliding shelf of my computer cabinet. I had to compromise and give up an excellent quality scanner to get one that fit.Although it only just arrived, I am already thrilled with the Canon 4400F. Not only is it smaller (narrower) than some of the other brands and fits on my shelf, I am extremely pleased with the quality of the scans at several different resolutions, color modes, and sources and with the speed that the scanner accomplishes each task. (The scans of negatives do take a little longer to complete.) I have already successfully scanned black and white documents, color prints, color photos, pages and images from books, and just had my first experience scanning negatives. I was shocked with the excellent quality and color of the scanned negatives and will now plan on getting them all scanned and saved on my computer in the coming weeks. I bought this primarily to scan sections of documents, artwork, and photos, and the negative scanner is an unexpected and very welcome bonus. I likely will not use the buttons on the front, preferring to use the advanced mode on the ScanGear software to have a little more control over the final product.I did have some problems getting the scanner to work properly at first. After a few scans the ScanGear software and my photoshop CS software would both apparently crash requiring control-alt-delete to force quit the program. I went to the canon website and downloaded their updated driver and installed that and the problem only got worse. I then uninstalled the new driver and downloaded it again, installed it again and rebooted my PC again, and despite my best efforts to get the software to crash, it is working like a dream.I am thrilled with this product because it works so well and am probably even more thrilled with it because it was relatively inexpensive. Definitely one of my better purchases.

I like the quality of scans coming out of the Canon CanoScan 4400F Color Image Scanner (1306B002). I bought it to digitize old negatives and slides for my family. The device appears to be feature rich with functionality but I doubt I'll ever use any of the "one touch" buttons however I can see how others would. The software lets you toggle between novice and advanced. My only complaint is that it should be a little easier to scan negatives without touching them. The negative tray is a little awkward to work with but it does get the job done. I understand the Canon CS8800F Color Image Scanner ( 2168B002 ) might be better suited to my needs but I was working in a budget and the price was right for the 4400F.

My best friend bought me this scanner for Christmas (at my request). I picked this particular model because of the low price, high resolution, and it being a flatbed scanner that can also handle negatives.I've been using it for several days now and I have to say, I LOVE this scanner! It has to be the quietest scanner I've ever seen. I was on the phone with my mom while scanning and she never heard it. It is also fast. At the highest resolution, previewing for negative scanning takes maybe 20 seconds. The actual scan takes less than two minutes. The quality of the scans is awesome, regardless of whether you are doing flatbed scanning, color negatives, or black and white negatives (true black & white at that).Software wise, the TWAIN driver is very very nice with tons of options. It works perfectly on my XP Pro system with a fairly low end graphics card. The bundled PhotoStudio sucks, however, and I don't use it. I find Irfanview (available free on-line) works quite nicely for most of my needs, including acting as a facilitator for batch scanning to file. I have not tried the included OmniPage, however I have used an earlier version so I expect it will work quite nicely. The other review here seems to dismiss this scanner as being more cheaply made. Personally, it seems nicely made to me. If you are abusive towards your equipment, then yeah, spend twice as much for something all metal. I, however, treat my equipment well. The plastic negative holder works just fine for me, and is very easy to use. I don't see anything wrong with the plastic hinge either. It works smoothly and seems well designed. Another nice thing about this scanner is that it doesn't not weigh much at all! I like this since I have a glass desk which can't hold a ton of weight. The design is nice too. It looks nice and sleek against my blue glass. All in all, I would highly recommend this scanner for anyone looking for a good, fast all purpose scanner for under $100. Well worth the money (and the free super saving shipping is a nice bonus). Best Christmas present I got.

Unfortunately the software when running brings my pc to a painful crawl. Deep six the software and aces up for the hardware at this price point. You'll need to steal a few more bucks from your wallet to get faster scanning out of a box at this price. The only other drawback is it is for a 8.5" x 11" not 8.5" x 14".www.Powermastery.com

I bought this scanner to replace an older, similar model that I had worn out. The older model didn't go to standby when the computer did, which I think contributed to its demise. This 4400F model does go into standby mode when the computer does. It's a little slower than my old scanner, but it has a few more features, like selecting more than one area to scan on one image, and the ability to set up more than one 35mm negative at a time to scan. I scan lots of photos for my art work, and need the best detail I can get. I haven't tried all of its features yet, but it seems to be everything I need at a reasonable price.

BEWARE: Unfortunately Canon left out an important detail in the product specifications (and now I'm stuck with a scanner that does 1/4 of what it says it can do on the box).Whatever is listed as the highest DPI in the listbox is THE highest the scanner will optically scan. For regular scans, it is LIMITED to 1200DPI. You can type in a higher number, but it simply scans it at 1200DPI then scales it up to the DPI you typed in (software interpolation is worthless, it just makes the image large and fuzzy). So if you are expecting this to scan normal documents at 4800x9600DPI (at this DPI, just a logo or something small) FORGET IT! Canon put a limitation in the scanner driver to prevent it from scanning higher than 1200DPI on normal scans.*** It ONLY scans at 4800x9600DPI when doing film/slides (which isn't what I bought this scanner for). ***I thought I was buying a Porsche and got a VW instead, sure it still gets me there, but it's not the same...

I bought this scanner to replace my ageing Microtek Scanmaker E6 flatbed color scanner. The Microtek unit worked just fine after many years (6? 8? I can't remember!) but it was slow, required a big, clunky SCSI cable and adapter, and the software (TWAIN Drivers) was quite dated and still buggy. I knew they'd never update the drivers again, so I decided to get this Canon as a replacement.I've been using it for about 2 months now, just for scanning documents, and a few photos. The scan performance seems fine. It's definitely faster than the older scanner, and it did plug and play just fine. The software? UGH. Why do the Japanese seem to have a problem producing good-quality, functional, well-designed intuitive software? This isn't rocket science. It's just a driver, folks. The thing is riddled with stupid little annoyances that really detract from the otherwise pleasant experience. For example, each time you scan a page, it forgets the settings you just used, and starts again from the same set of defaults. You can save settings by name, but each time the driver starts up, you must reselect the group of settings you want. If you're scanning 10 pages, this gets old fast. The integration of the front panel buttons with the bundled software is equally quirky and annoying. And, some of the applications that would normally be quite useful, aren't, simply because they failed to actually ask any REAL WORLD USERS for feedback on their stupid user interface designs! All in all, a worthwhile purchase. Expect to be annoyed by the software, but you will find it useable. Canon, if you are listening, try beta testing your designs before shipping your product. A little bit of tweaking will go a long way towards making a better product. I'm sure that's how Apple does it.

On a best value basis, this unit seems to take it (at the moment of purchase 1 month ago). Very nice hardware together with very effective software for cleaning up all those film negative issues. Very happy with the purchase and the item arrived very quickly after purchasing from Amazon.

Very nice device, creates good quality, multi-page pdf documents. I can insert pretty thick books (I tried up to an inch). Easy to learn how to handle (took me 5 minutes). Noise is within acceptable range (and I'm sensitive). I wish it would scan faster, that's why I give 4 stars. Each page takes 30-40 seconds.

Out of the box this scanner works well. A little memory intensive for older machines. Nice that it will scan multiple pictures at a time and automatically separate them into separate images. We scanned some family prints and then reprinted them professionally and you can't tell a difference.

Everything as promised. Really easy to operate, great quality of documents and pictures after scanning. The scanner itself is very light and not bulky at all.

I had to buy a new scanner because I downgraded to Vista from Windows XP. About the only thing I am happy about is this scanner. I does a great job of scanning and reclaiming old photos that are hardly visible. I am developing a large family picture database with the help of this scanner and the software that came with it. I recommend it highly.

Scanner is fantastic but be careful upon arrival, almost no packaging protection inside. If the box looks banged up, check your scanner immediately.

I bought this to scan my family's 35mm slide collection. I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of the output. The software is a little bit clunky, but it works. I'm so pleased with how this is working that I'm going to also scan the family collection of photos and negatives. Worth every penny!!

I was looking for a cost effective way to digitize my old color slides. This scanner does a great job with this task. There were no problems with setup or scanning photos or slides. Scanning slides is a bit slow, but the ability to scan up to four at a time helps that. The digital results were very good. This is a great scanner at a great price.

The ability to scan four 35 MM slides at a time is nice. It takes about 4 minutes to do the scan and the software used to edit and clean the images up is very good but not as good as more expensive software packages. Occasinally it seems to fail to see the slides and generate images that are not useable or, it may see only 2 or 3 of the four slides. In these cases, it can usually be corrected by deleting the unuseable images and rescanning. The photographic scan and copy functions work very well.

I love the one touch buttons on the front that loads software and scans all in the touch of a button. Excellent photo quality scans. The software for scanning color photos has a fading correction feature that works great. I never realized how much my old color photos had faded until I used this feature to correct for that. Excellent and easy to use other photo correction capabilities as well as many other scanning options. The lid for the bed has the ability to flex at the hinge pivot point to allow for placing of large books or photo albums. Easy to install software and hardware. Just plug the power cord and USB cord in, run the install and it's ready. Driver support for other software programs works well too.All around, excellent price and quality!!The only possible down side is the bed size is basically letter size, so scanning legal size documents is out. That's okay for me, just make sure it's okay for you. Canon has similar larger scanners that I would trust after using this one.By the way, I had to call their support number because I thought an item was missing in the shipment (it wasnt, just my mistake in un-boxing the scanner) but they were ready to send me a replacement part right away. Excellent support!!

I could not get this scanner to work with Vista. Their tech support was very good but it just would not work. The OCR left something in my computer and now when I run Word for windowsIt will not close until it runs visual basic and trys to debug omipage and Text bridge. I have tried all i can think of to get these two ocr programs out but I have not been successful. I have searched the registry and have deleted all refernce to to these programs. Now even though omni page and textbridge are not on my computer visual basic stills will not allow me to exit word without having to close a couple of boxes.

This is an amazingly powerful piece of electronics, regardless of the price -- and given its price, it's a no-brainer. Extensive software included. No problems with Vista compatibility.
