I wanted the in-ear version (QC20) but I have a cat who loves to chew through wires. In this version, the wire that connects to your device/headphone is detachable so that if a cat chews through it or it breaks you can just get a new one.
Also, this version uses a AAA battery which means, ultimately, you don't have to worry about a non-replaceable battery going bad after a few years.
I've used both and didn't really notice a sound quality difference.
UPDATE January 2016:
After two years of regular use, the left speaker stopped working. Very frustrating, since my product was out of warranty and I wouldn't expect this from a Bose product. I went to a Bose store to see what my options were and the lady working there said this headset has a known issue where it can fail and, regardless of warranty status, they are to do an exchange free of charge.
So, I have a new pair of headphones, with a new warranty.
Excellent customer service.

I highly recommend these headphones if you travel on planes. If not, there are cheaper/better options without the noise canceling feature.

They can be used without a battery - but the sound is then terrible, so what's the point?
They are not wireless, so you still have a long lead getting in the way.
The audio quality (with the battery) is 'okay' it's not mindblastingly wonderful for the price.
You still have to buy a separate jack for the larger connection that's on your hi-fi
The on/off switch is a rather pathetic thing which is easy to overlook, so the battery drains - why not rechargeable?
They apparently (have not checked) don't work with all smartphones (worked with my Lumia 635)
Overall, if noise-cancelling is what you need then yes, these are great, but if you want anything else then I don't think the quality is there - especially for the price.
I just feel that these days, we have got too used to paying too much for a name rather than a good product.

The two areas where these headphones do distinguish themselves are build quality and comfort. The build quality is flat-out awesome and luxurious, and they are definitely the best-built set of headphones I have used. They are also extremely comfortable-- so comfortable that I almost want to forgive them for the lousy sound quality. But not quite. Not for $300. Can't recommend these.

Additionally, when used to block noise, you should be aware that these headphones only block light trivial nearby sounds. They will NOT block noisy conversations taking place next you. Nor will they block that annoying music coming from another guy's headphones near you.
UPDATE on 8/14/2015:
The right earbud is now broken and doesn't turn on at all. All I'm left with is the left earbud. Terrible quality for such an expensive product!!!

All I can say is once I put them on and closed my eyes, the time just passed and I was fine.
They are lightweight, they fit great around the ears and the fabulous sound is well balanced. I love them!

However, don't expect noise canceling to block out all noises. That's not specific to this brand or model, it is a limitation of noise canceling as far as I know. You will still hear people talking loudly, crying babies, barking dogs, etc. but just more muffled. It probably cuts those noises in 1/3. For lots of other background type noises like dishwashers, clothes dryers, quieter miscellaneous noises, it completely blocks it out. With noise canceling plus music on low/medium volume, you most likely won't hear anything at all.

Anyone else experiencing this?

The sound is crisp and really doesn't require any "burning in". The bass is resonant, and music is clear, as far as I'm aware.
The noise-cancellation, on the other hand, is fantastic. The best place to test these is on flights -- as soon as I wear these, I immediately fall asleep, comfortably listening to my music while barely (and I mean, barely) hearing the plane's engines. Thankfully due to new TSA regulations, you can now wear these during the entirety of your flight.
The adjustable headband is comfortable, and can be easily be worn for long periods of time. While the weight may be of concern to some (196 g), I believe it is negligible enough and similar to its competitors.
Overall, these are a great pair of headphones. If you are looking for good, noise-cancelling headphones, look no further.

Update: After having these headphones for a few days, I feel that the noise canceling is even better than what I felt. There have been career fairs on campus these two days and you can imagine how noisy everywhere is. These headphones almost cancel out all the noise. So, in that aspect, the headphones are excellent.
I also find two minor shortcomes. First, to fold/unfold the headphones, you need to twist the earcups. This always gives me the feeling that I will break them. Given the brand and build quality, they probably won't be that easy to be broken. However, it still makes me feel nervous. Second, to put the headphones in the carrying case, I always need to disconnect the cable from the headphones as the case is designed as small as it can be (so if you leave the cable there, it will stick out a little). This is also the case for some other headphones. However, the hole of these headphones is very deep and this makes it a little hard to plug the cable in. This is just a bit annoying for me, but might be a problem for some people. Overall, I would still give these headphone five stars.

Cons:
1) The biggest problem (send back show stopper) is the slightest pressure to the side of the earphones causes something inside them to crackle - And I mean the slightest pressure :¬( - Accidentally brushing up against a pillow for example - From what I can tell its the pressure difference causing the speaker diaphragm to crackle NOT anything electronic :¬(
2) The lead is way to short
3) The Inline volume control is not a volume control its an apple IOS control - way to go BOSE :¬( - So I had to buy a long extension cord and an inline volume control adapter - now all this extra hardware make it look so stupid.
Pros:
1) The sound cancelling is very good - They help massively with my noisy neighbour syndrome
2) Fold up small and have a free carry case
3) Comfortable to wear
Neutrals:
1) The sounds ok (to my ears) - nothing special - maybe there's an over exaggeration of the high end frequencies
I will give it one more day to see if I can learn not to slightly tough the sides of the headphones or it will have to go back - They have annoyed me enough to make me write this.

I've been scared multiple times because I would be working or playing games and have music turned on. I couldn't even sense when someone was behind me standing over my shoulder.

Could use a longer cord ........
