My fourth Apple AirPort router, my eighth overall. In general, you get better value for your dollar from other manufacturers. And for any network scenario I've dealt with, I've spent far, far more time debugging problems with the AirPort routers than I have for the others. That may seem counter-intuitive given Apple's reputation for simplicity, but in the network arena that's been my experience. Some of the areas where Apple falls short, in my view...Security: AirPort Extremes always reply to an outside Ping. There's nothing you can do about it, so the black hats always know your network exists. Not a great idea. Every other router I've used had a more sophisticated firewall (AirPorts only have NAT), and kept more detailed logs.Range: Don't believe the hype about twice the range (note that the fine print on the box says it offers twice the range - compared to *Apple's* previous G-band products). In practice the range is no better than my old G-band router the AirPort replaced, and if you intend to use the less-crowded 5 MHz N-band the range will be about half of that. Maybe 30 feet around here.Documentation: Like most things Apple, the documentation is pretty, but too insubstantial to be of much real help. I guess in the interests of trying to keep things simple Apple likes to use its own parlance rather than generally accepted WiFi terms (e.g., "closed network" is Applespeak for 'don't broadcast the SSID'), so you end up having to puzzle things out if you do happen to already know a few things about networking. In general there's inadequate discussion of the various things you really need to know to configure the product for any but the most mundane installations. You'll end up scanning the Apple discussion forums for answers, or Googling. Takes time.Updates: AirPort software updates tend to be problematic. Always wait awhile and check the discussion forums before installing updates. There often seem to be problems with attached USB disks (I lost everything on a Seagate drive two releases ago, forums report more disk problems with the latest release), and if you're really unlucky you end up with a brick. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to downgrade to a prior release when you do have problems (if you know the secret of the Option key), but again, you've wasted time.Router Admin. You can administer most other routers using a browser, but the AirPort requires an application called "AirPort Utility." Yet another piece of software to keep current. The Windows version is a bit different than the Mac version, a bit behind in terms of features, and seemingly somewhat less stable than the Mac version. I always use the Mac versions for updating the routers. Seems to result in fewer problems. So that's about it. Not a bad product by any means, but not the best value in terms of time or money, either.

I bought the Extreme less than a month ago. It worked well and then it had to be continually reset; it wouldn't connect my PowerBook or my iPodTouch, both of which it had done initially. I spent close to an hour on the phone with an Apple tech - very helpful ... and at the end of which, it all worked. She had me set up two separate networks. The next day, it did not work; would not connect to the Powerbook or the iPod; had to be reset for the (2010)Mac Mini. It was the same problems, not recognizing the network, and then on resetting not connecting to the others; it seemed pointless to spend more time online with Apple, especially since I have Vonage and disconnecting the Extreme affected that. I am returning the Extreme to Amazon, grateful for their return policies --- and am back to using my old Apple Express, surprisingly problem free for the last week, all externals connecting fine. That several year-old Express had been erratic and for that reason I "upgraded" to the Extreme. I am not sure what to get if the Express begins to be erratic, perhaps a new Express?

Easiest setup of of any tech product I ever used. During setup I was asked if I wanted to replace a router. I was given options of previous routers I had used. I selected the one I was replacing and the setup happened correctly in less than an minute. Everything connected previously was ready to go again without having to configure individual devices. Very nice feature of a guest network in addition to your own private network.

I spent most of a day trying to get this thing installed to replace one of my 2 routers and then bridge the network. I think if I had only Apple equipment it would have taken about 30 minutes. The problem was due to the fact that I have both PCs and Apple equipment and the install CD did not have everything I needed.Once I found everything and successfully bridged the network I increased my speed by about 5X.The coverage is great too. This is a mean router.

This was my second wireless network. I did have problems with the installation a few months ago, and had to call tech support. It took some work, but we did get it to work with our antivirus and internet provider. I have a good signal in the house, and have had no problems once the installation was successful. It was not as easy an installation as many of the reviews had led me to believe. That said, I am very satisfied with the performance and speed of this wireless. It is way faster than the original Netgear I had.

Have had some issues with Time Machine but ever since I read on macrumors forum to uncheck the disk sleep preference (and I deleted the backup and started from scratch (just in case)), I haven't had any issues with slow or failed backups. And the range is much improved over my Belkin Wireless G Router F5D7230-4 - Wireless router - 4-port switch - 802.11b/g - desktop.I always had horrible wireless speeds in our master bedroom. But ever since I got the airport extreme, my wireless speeds are much improved.

I have used every router under the sun, most of them in the harsh unforgiving desert of Iraq. I can tell you from experience which companies make the worst and best routers and have found that brand is the most important indicator of quality and performance. Apple and Linksys rule the roost when it comes to quality and performance. But I continue to buy apple routers for both my office and home. They are reliable, super easy to use and have great performance. The best features of this router:- Airport Time Machine backups, just plug in a USB disk and you can wirelessly back up via Time Machine- Daisy Chain routers- it is simple to add extra Airport routes to you network to expand coverage or introduce new features such as wireless printing or AirPlay- Gigabit Ethernet- I have a server at home with tons of video files, music and pics, the Gigabit Ethernet moves the data fast over a wired network- Simple setup UI

One of my biggest gripes with Apple's wireless networking equipment is that none of the setup configs is web-based. Instead, you're forced to install Apple's Airport Utility for Windows if you want to set this thing up. Problem is, no matter what I tried, the Airport Utility simply would not allow me to configure any of the settings on the router. I tried everything from using a wireless connection to a wired connection, multiple reinstalls of the airport utility, shutting down firewalls and antivirus software, disabling/re-enabling bonjour, and nothing worked. I even spent about 40 minutes on the phone with Apple's famed tech support, and even they couldn't figure it out.Quick search on the web will bring up others having similar problems with Airport Utility on Windows.Unless I can figure something out, this thing is going back and I'll pick up the Netgear WNDR3700.

I bought a refurbished Airport Extreme for $80 through Amazon. It came with no instructions and not in the original packaging. However it contained the right power cables. I simply plugged it into the wall, than I plugged my desktop PC into it, and it had instant internet access.Next I turned opened my MacBook, and it also had access via wifi. Within a few minutes a network configuration came up and I simply followed the directions, which were super easy, and everything works great. The range isnt as good as I hoped but its still pretty good, I'm totally satisfied. I have a 34k sqft house and my Airport is on the far end, and when I go all the way to the opposite side it only has 2 bars reception, but I can still stream movies straight from my Amazon Video on Demand library with very little interruption. If it gets too bad then I'll just get an Airport Express (wifi repeater/booster), probably used or refurbished, which would probably work just as good as new, but half the price

Length:: 2:11 MinsThere is a lot to like about the Airport Extreme - It offers lightening fast connections via dual bands, a USB port to offer network flexibility, and the ability to join and amplify an existing network. In my case it works well but not perfectly (I will admit I have not tried to use it to expand an existing network). The features that I like- The N-band is lightening fast. One example is my Apple TV with 160GB Hard Drive - MB189LL/A which now downloads movies alomst instantly.- Basic set-up is very easy (using a Mac) - Airport Utility will walk you right through the set-up.- The ability to serve a printer server - allowing one printer to be shared by multiple computers- Ability to add an external hard drive through Airport Extreme's USB port - it is great being able to back-up files wirelessly! The things I had issues with- The range is below that of my NETGEAR Wireless-N Access Point - although it is much more reliable than the Netgear.- Try as I might I was never able to connect my HP Printer to the network - the network will recognize it but I am unable to print. I am sure that this can be overcome... but how much more time will it take?- It took several tries for me to install my external hard-drive and have it recognized.- I do get a few network drops - it may be issues with my computer.Final Verdict - If it was easier to install my printer and external network this would be an easy 5-star recommendation, but due to the hassles (and failure in the case of the printer) I will give it 4 stars. It is the best router that I have used... but it is also the most expensive (so it should be the best).4 Stars

Another excellent wireless internet base station from Apple. I've had a few of this things. Not because I had any problems with them; I've just been keeping up with the speed updates for our home. Between the three I've had at home and two at work locations; I've been very happy with these units. Our office's and home offices are all Mac so I can't comment on setting one up with a PC, but PC laptops brought in by friends link up with out any problems.Setting up with a mac is easy. Using the airport utility (found in the utilities folder in the "go" menu bar item - right there at the top of your screen) the unit will walk you through set up, and you won't have lose any of hair. This time, setting this one up I got an alert telling me I had the wrong IP address in the setup. This was easily rectified by doing a google search for "my ip address". This search will give you your ip. I just copied it and went back into the setup using the Airport utility. After the correct ip was entered and the base station restarted I was in business. But, don't worry to much this problem may not affect you.The two channel feature allows you to use smart phones or computers that don't have 802.11n wireless without slowing down the n connection for other users. Wireless modems without two channels slow down to the speed of slowest wireless computer or smart phone.I have a brother printer hooked up to the base station and all our computers see it with no problems.Very happy with the unit. For those of you with windows machines here is a link to web page explaining how easy it is to use this base station with a PC: [...]

If you are asking why you should pay more money for this router, you need to understand the added benefit of "Dual Simultaneous" functionality that this access point gives you.Almost all other wireless routers offer N (300kbps), however when a G device connects, all off your N devices automatically switch over to 150kbps....This is something the average consumer doesn't know. This Airport Extreme is Dual Simultaneous band...the simultaneous is the key selling point of this device. Your N devices will keep a 300kbps connection even with G/B/A devices connect to it.You get gig-ports with this device! This is a premium feature that most home routers do not have. Check out those $40 wireless accesspoints...they simply suck compared to this bad-boy!I never have to power cycle this access point, I never have any problems with it. It's the best access point for Windows and Macs. This router also uses the FINAL-N protocol. Most other access points only use the draft. This device is all quality. Pay a little more for your access point...it is the heart of your home network.

I installed this last may on an mac-only network through a cable modem running 10Mb/sec. My ipad saw both the N- and the G-sides of the dual-router. However, the N on the ipad was useless, short range, drop outs. I eventually killed it out of neglect. Of course, it could have been the ipad's issue as well, since the ipad had a much-discussed but seemingly never fixed wifi problem with drop outs. OK, so I used the G until november, after an apple airport firmware upgrade. Shortly after that, the power died. No clue, of course, since it has a single led indicator. Now, its back to apple to fix or replace. Just may keep my old B/G Netgear running. No problems from that old router.

This router replaced a Linksys Wireless G router that had been serving me very well, until the number neighbors using 2.4GHz WFi made streaming music across the house unreliable at times.I needed to move into the 5GHz band and still support all the older laptops and printers that only had 2.4GHz radios in them. I wanted to place the music streamers all in the 5GHz band away from the interference, and the simplicity of a single-box solution to do all this appealed to me.I am happy to say my objectives were all achieved and I am now supporting a mixed network of PCs, printers and a Macbook, plus some WiFi music streamers.Setup was very simple, but I did run into a few minor issues:1) I wanted to specify which devices would run at 5GHz (those streaming music, primarily) and leave everything else at 2.4GHz. This required using a different SSID for the 5GHz network, which was an option that was a little bit hard to find in the menus.2) Since I was worried about network coverage at 5GHz I used the "allow this network to be extended option" and configured one Airport Express to extend the network rather than simply join it. This dramatically slowed down the throughput on the extended network, to the point where I had to switch it off and resort to simple star topology. Fortunately, coverage is still good enough to reach where I need it.3) I really wish the Airport didn't have to restart every time you make a small update to the configuration. This disrupted connectivity for other users in the house, while I refined my final configuration choices (like turning off SNMP from the WAN port, for example).A more significant limitation is that the throughput from the WAN to LAN ports seems quite limited compared to that between different LAN connections. I have only managed to get good, rather than great, download speed test results since installing this router, which is possibly due to sluggish NAT (network address translation), which has been reported on previous generations of Apple's Airport Extreme. If this is the case, I could fix it by using a wired router for NAT and DHCP and just use the Airport Extreme as a bridge from wired to wireless. However, that wouldn't be nearly so elegant as the one-Zen-looking-white-box-that-does-everything, now would it?However, I am still giving 5 stars since this router has the distinction of being usable by nearly everyone, and while not 100% performance-oriented, it is 100% user-oriented, and it is a stable, finished product that just works. Bravo!

All my devices - Windows Vista, XP, 7, Wii and iPhone all work with the Airport with no problems. I haven't had to reset the Airport once yet and I've been using it for a month. I finally have connection speeds up to 300 Mbps on my N devices.I replaced my NetGear WNR-2000 with the Airport Extreme. It outperforms the NetGear in every way. The NetGear was terrible: 1) I could never get any of my N devices to communicate over 54 Mbps (it is an 'N' router); 2) large file transfers were slow and would quit; 3) it would just stop communicating with two different iPhones (resetting the router would fix this for a day or two); 4) it dropped connections a lot and needed resetting.Only 2 cons about the Airport: 1) to use a printer connected to the USB port, you have to install Bonjour on every PC you want to print from. I wasn't to keen on loading Bonjour (especially on my employer-issued laptop), so I just shared out the printer on my main tower pc; 2) there's only one LED status light.

I don't usually take the time to review products here. But this device works so well that I just felt like I had to. I have been through 7 different wireless N routers from 4 different manufacturers - just trying to get them to do one simple thing. Provide a reliable consistent high bandwith wireless connection to a room 20' away, on the same floor and through one wall. I just want to stream HD video to a bedroom so that I can eliminate the sattelite box in there.None of the others have been able to do this (despite their advertised greatness.) I have tried the three top of the line routers from Linksys. Two of D-link's best routers, and two others from lesser known companies. They all have failed miserably. When I could get them to connect reliably, the best any of them could do is give me about 20Mbs connection. Yes, I do believe there is a huge problem with manufacturers dumping products on the market at premium prices - and then trying to fix them with firmware updates. I have gotten very good at updating firmware on routers...This Airport Extreme....took all of 5 minutes to set up. When I checked, it already had the latest firmware installed. And best of all...200Mbs, rock steady connection in the place where I need it. I have run this thing for a couple weeks and the connection hasn't faded, much less dropped. The neighbors across the street can even get a solid 3 bars and 160Mbs.Others have gone into detail about the pros and cons of this device. I am just going to say every single feature of this router works just like it is supposed to. AND it is ridiculously easy to set up.Spend the money. Buy this thing now. Or wait possibly forever for the other manufacturers to get their S&*# together, pump out a half dozen more firmware updates and maybe one day have a product that works this well.

The Extreme Base Station offers a number of interesting features: Simultaneous dual-band (5 & 2.4GHz) operation for better interference robustness, guest network, network attached storage server (if you attach a 2.5" external USB drive, the base station can even power it), 4 gigabit ethernet ports (1 WAN, 3 LAN), excellent range, 3 internal antennas that do the MIMO dance to give you better range, etc. Naturally, the base station can be used to extend a network, be the router, DHCP server, or do just about anything one would normally ask of a base station. The few remaining improvement opportunities (for me) would include more LAN ports (3 is a bit skimpy) and a enclosing a wall-mounting system as part of the package. But other than that, I love the fact that these routers are rock-solid, never cause issues. Unlike many other routers I have owned, the ABS' consistently manage to run for months at a time before a reset is necessary.

This is especially impressive since the home its installed in is older and not the usual sheet rock walls. Setting it up was extremely easy, but I have prior experience. It made for a perfect drop-in replacement for the old router and the most difficult part was calling the ISP to have the DHCP lease broken so an IP would be given to the Airport Extreme.

No trouble whatsoever, breezed right through it.Initially, I tried to get away with cheap, and went with the Netgear WNR2000. It set up pretty fast, and worked well most of the time, but would drop the signal a couple times a week, at least. Usually when I was in the middle of something. I also could not get it to work with my wireless Canon printer. That got old fast, so decided to bite the bullet and spend the money on the Apple Airport Extreme. I'm glad I did, it has worked flawlessly since Day 1, and has never yet dropped a signal. Highly recommend.

It took me longer to clear the space on my desk for the router than it did to set it up. The Airport Utility imported my settings from the previous router and I was good to go. I mean it was 5 minutes or less -- no kidding! Everything works flawlessly including my desktop computer, iPod Touch, and three laptops connected wirelessly, as well as my Sony PSP 3 which is also wirelessly connected. My Vonnage also continues to work perfectly. We have a large two story house and haven't been able to find a single dead zone, and I did try to find one!I started with a Linksys router which was fine but had very limited range so a couple of years ago I purchased a D-Link which got great range, but I could only send jobs to my printer IF my desktop computer was turned on (it's wired to the printer). Numerous calls to D-Link tech support were a waste of time.A year ago I replaced the D-Link with a Netgear. The Netgear is a beautiful piece of equipment that gets great range and sends print jobs easily from anywhere in the house without having to have the desktop computer turned on. The problem is/was that I couldn't always get it to connect to the internet. I would have to restart my computer numerous times. I was averaging 45 to 60 minutes (combined times) a day trying to establish a connection and sometimes I just couldn't get on. In addition, I could not connect to my bank's online banking with the Netgear. Their tech support worked with me to try to overcome those problems, but nothing ever worked to resolve the issues. Interestingly enough the same Netgear router at my business office in another location works flawlessly: I get on every time and I can do my online banking via the Netgear at the office but not at home with the Netgear.I was just tired of having to work so hard to establish an internet connection. Having tried Linksys, D-link and Netgear, I wasn't interested in spending more money to discover what problem yet another brand possessed. I have always had positive experiences with Apple products, so I thought 'why not.' I set aside the time to set it up and made the commitment to take it back to the Apple Store within 14 days if it didn't do everything I needed it to do. What a pleasure to plug it in and install the software, and have the rest be like waving a magic wand. The only problem I encountered was having to reinstall the printer hardware (ethernet connected). And yes, I can do my banking online from home again. I am very pleased, though not surprised. Apple does it yet again!

When I got my mac in 2007, I installed it with my existing router and modem. Over time, I had all sorts of connection and network problems. Friends that would come to my house had a hard time getting a signal, and if I moved my computer to anywhere else in my house, I would have to keep reactivating the router to get a signal. I am not exactly a tech person - but enough tech people I know said, "It's the router - get the one from Apple." When it came, I wanted my friend to come over and install it - he informed me it was so easy to install, a monkey could do it. Guess what? I'm a monkey. I did it! Pretty easy, straight forward stuff! And guess what else? Problem solved.

This is pretty much the card you have to get for your mac tower. Other cards I've tried do not integrate as well with the OSX operating system (they do not use the network preference pane for configuration), or are missing key features (enterprise level wireless security). This card handles everything, has a good range, and is installed discreetly inside the case. It'll also work for most of the mac pro towers, I installed my card in a 2006 tower. The down side is that installation is a complete pain in the behind. Bring your jeweller's size phillips head screwdriver, and a pair of steady hands. The card needs to fit inside a very small riser that runs parallel to the card. The tension in the card will force it up, and if you don't have your hand on the tiny screws just right, they'll go flying somewhere inside the case. Finding them and getting them out at that point is a big pain... and yes, it happened to me.I'm docking a star for the installation hassles, and the fact that the card looked nothing like the picture. However, it's an official Apple product, and works fine.

I purchased the AirPort Extreme BaseStation from the Apple store, brought it home and set it up. I have setup many home wired and wireless networks and typically prefer Linksys for my switches and routers. What drew me to the AirPort Extreme was the fact that it has 6 internal antennae, 3 for 2.4 GHz, and 3 for 5 GHz. I also liked that it simultaneously supported Wireless N & G. I have a newer unibody 17" MacBook Pro, and Sony Vaio Gaming Notebook that use N, but everything else I have is older legacy hardware, or smart phones and other devices that use G. I also have some items that work better connecting to 2.4 GHz and some on 5 GHz. What this means for me is that by adding the AirPort Extreme to my network, I was able to remove multiple Linksys routers that were used to accommodate my varied list of hardware. In addition to that, I also have noticed speed increases, and improved connectivity on all devices. I would highly recommend this to anyone running a home network even of none of the computers are Apple. This works great Mac, Linux, and Windows networks, or networks like mine that have a little of everything. As a bonus, I love the Guest Network connection. There are a few settings for guest network that I like and one is that I can grant somebody access via their Mac Address, never give them the password, and let their access expire after 24 hours. The guest network also does not have access to view other computers, printers, or network storage devices on the network. They basically get the internet only. This is a great piece of networking hardware and I highly recommend it.

The good news is I got my AirPort extreme "refurb" very quickly and it was very easyto set up, just like a new one. I was able to hook up my MBP to 211n.Here is thing to be aware of; My refurb had no installation CD like a new one. The firmwarewas old. I would have thought that if it was really tested, they would have updated thefirmware. I did get a thin set pamphlet, but nothing else. I dont know if there was anymoredocumentation that they left out. I have bought refurb items before and they came normallycome as new. Apple apparently does nothing more than take whatever they got back, doa quick test, and call it refurb without really identifying if the reason for returnis legitimate. Beware of that.

This base station is awesome. When I received it I took it out of the box and in less than 15 minutes I had it up and working. I have made the switch to all Apple products and for the last 18 months, I have not had any pc issues. What a relief. Thanks Apple! Some people complain about Apple products and the pricing, but I am a huge fan. I had pc's with windows operating systems and everytime I added a new piece of hardware there were issues. Bill Gates could learn something from Apple. The Apple stuff just plain works, with very little effort.

I was really expecting more power on the signal reach than my old Linksys. Not accomplished. It works fine but not excellent.

I hardly ever write reviews... but I have to say that this Airport Extreme is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I've owned it for 2 years now and it's never failed, always puts out an excellent signal. My kids never complain about wi-fi access and that's a blessing. Get a mac and buy one of these.

I bought this product after reading good reviews on amazon. Apple did a crappy job with the documentation regarding installationand troubleshooting of the product. After I installed the software it was unable to detect the airport Extreme. I had to connect to the device usingEthernet cable after that it detected it and then I configured it.The documentation was indeed written by a 10th grader or an intern who did if followed the steps wouldn't be able to installand configure the device.Overall I am happy with the device and how its working better than the Linksys WRT 54G i had before. Apple does make expensivebut good products as this was my first apple product and am thinking of trying other products by them.If you thinking of buying a great wireless router, this is the one without issues but be prepared to face installation issueswhich minor after that it's smooth sailing.

This router is great, but when I connect the printer to the router my mac has to be on for me to be able to print from my pc, I called apple and they don't do tech support for pc's. FYI the scan function from the printer will be disabled.
