We had ordered this adapter thinking that ours was broken, turned out it was the base that needed to be exchanged. We unfortunately had to send it back and Steve was very understanding. Thank you again for working with us.

I just had to write a review about the airport extreme I received a couple weeks ago from amazon ... 1. it's real simple to use (alittle too simple ... would have liked a few more options like the netgear 3700) 2.it's reliable ... been up with no probs ... 3.clean design ... however apple should have given you the option to mount vertically. 4. Airport Drive ... Fast for networked drive ... I average speeds of 20 megabytes d/l and upload 5.AMAZINGLY FAST! ... i do have wifi enabled ... but run wired for local networking ... currently AEBS is connected my iMac and cube the third port is routed to my netgear 5 port gigabit switch witch is connected to my htpc/asus o!play and ps3. The Speeds wifi is pretty fast... I tested the connection from my wifi N on htpc and it clocks in at 6.5 megabytes (rated up to 75mbps on 20mhz) a sec. avg. (i have a us micron which i would not recommend ... crashes alot can't handle the speed) The adapter actually can handle upto 150mbps ... but that is on 40mhz which the AEBS doesn't support Now for the Wired connection ...From my iMac to my windows seven htpc it d/ls at average 60-70 MEGABYTES a sec. it always starts at 100-115 megabytes then drops 60-70 average jumping around anywhere from 55-80 megabytes. Now downloading from my Win 7 htpc ... it is unreal ... The d/l speed from HTPc to iMac is always steady 110-120 MEGABYTES A SEC ... i find this odd because when transferring from one partition to another on my htpc ... it's speeds never hit above 105 megabytes ...I would highly recommend Airport Extreme Base ... I'm glad I waited to go gigabit as this version (MC340LL/A) is superb. It does get hot ... so be advised ... keep in a cool area with some airflow ... this reason alone is why i went with the AEBS over the Time Capsule (they break around 18 months like clockwork)UPDATE :: I mounted the AEBS vertically with the matching macally usb hub and noticed a drop in temperature ... (mounted using 3M Dual Lock 400/170)ATTN::: Word of Advice ... i have network cables ranging from cat5 to cat7 ... I highly recommend going at least cat6a ... The cat6 cables i have that is 24awgx4 is decent ... I jumped 10-20 megabytes locally by jumping to cat6a shielded ...I am going to save you some time ... Buy QUALITY NETWORK CABLES ... just because it says cat6 blah blah 550 blah blah 10gigbit blah ... means nothing ... I have purchased from many sources and ended up with cat6a quality cables. Don't be fooled ... some cables will be marked cat7 and tend to be thinner dimensions 27awgx4 ... what a joke.If you can't decide ... the tripp lite cat6a cables here are suppose to be good ... I was in a pinch and since I had a 100 bestbuy giftcard ... I ended up buying some monster cable advanced which were way overpriced ... but i must admit ... they are fast, SHIELDED, and almost twice the width of my cat6 cables.Monoprice has some very nice shielded cat6a cables at an unbelievable price ... so I would highly recommend those ... the moster advanced are rated at 500mhz above and 10gigabit ready ... and no lies ... they are defiantly fast ... the funny thing is the monoprice cat6a look very similar to the moster i have and for about 1/10 of the price. I paid 30 dollars for a 7 foot ethernet cable (I was in a pinch) and 40 for a 14 footer ... LOL ... I could have brought so much more elsewhere ...G/L I hope I have helped someone ... The big factor for me performance wise ... were the cables ...--Drew ...ps. it's 2:30am so if this review is a little off whatever =P my wideband just got back up an running ... another TWC NYC bundle of joy ...feel free to contact me with questions as I would at least like to save someone else some money.

Hi All,True to my gadget envy, I acquired one of these dual band extreme base stations to see if they held up to the hype. Sure enough, Apple has improved an old mediocre product with a new more powerful hardware engine and improved software abilities.Features:802.11 A/B/G/N DUAL Band radios at 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously.Gigabit Ethernet ports 1x Wan and 3x Lan.Guest wireless network.Disk sharing via USB connected drive.Access to shared disk via MobileMe (apple mobile me subscribers on os x).The box comes with the router, the power cord, software cd, and documentation....limited documentation.Time to test.Setup: Setup of an apple base station is unlike any other in that you cannot access the setup portal via your web browser. You must install the Apple Airport utility (both mac and windows) in order to set the router up. The software is built very well and provides the typical ease of use known to MAC users. You simply walk through a setup wizard and define simple options for your internet connection, your wireless network, etc, etc. NOTE: When setting up your wireless networks you are able to hit the options button so that you can define a 5ghz network as well (example, main wireless network called wifi, the 5ghz is called wifi (5ghz)). Very easy to setup and get going. You are also able to easily define a SECURED (wpa/wpa2) guest wireless network....which simply means that if you have a visitor they can use wi-fi but not get to any of the computers on your home network. Very Secure....and a great feature to boot.I was using the old Apple Base Station and kept switching between it and a d-link wireless n router.... I got one of these primarily due to dual band and guest access.Yes, there are other routers out there that can do this for a bit of a lower cost...but the elegance of the Apple Airport Utility make this a router that can be setup without too much hassle. The software will also identify problems in the setup and have you correct them before it uploads them to the router. These abilities alone make this a router for the non-geeks to be able to setup a robust networking environment at home.Wireless: As I mentioned before, I am comparing this to an older model apple base station that was single band and worked in the N range. Also compared this against a D-Link DIR-655 which is a 2.4ghz Wireless N router. The section on speed below will detail my wireless experience.Speed: I have Comcast cable modem service which gives me about 15-25mbps down and 2mbps up....I live in an area where there are probably 5-10 subscribers...so my speed is generally GREAT and never experiences a slow down. The first thing I do when I play with a new router is do a speed test....the new base station is comparable to the others and gets the same exact download/upload speeds over ethernet. There is one exception....using the wireless on this unit yielded BETTER results then the older model and the d-link. Normally when doing a speed test over wireless I get about 12-15mbps and 2mbps up....with this router I was able to successfully hit the 20mbps mark and 2mbps UP. WIN WIN!!!! So I figured that this may be an anomaly and thus proceeded to test a download from Microsoft - a 3.4gb file - which normally downloads anywhere between 900kpbs and 1.2mbps. Surprise.....with the new base station I stayed at 1.3mbps and it did not hiccup even once. The same was true when downloading via a wireless connection, albeit the speed was 1.0mbps....faster then I have ever gotten before. WIN WIN again!Disk Sharing - Not much to be said here...I attached a Western Digital USB hard drive 320gb and shared it. You simply go into the Airport Utility software and setup sharing of the hard drive and define which password should be used. You can either use the password for the router or setup a separate password to use with Disk Sharing. Speed is dependent upon wired or wireless. I tested while transferring 3 files...one was 2mb one was 100mb and one was a 2.5gb file. The two mb file of course went over before I could blink...the 100mb transferred over in about 3-4 minutes...the 2.5gb took about 15 minutes. The first transfer test was with ETHERNET connectivity. I did the same tests over wireless and found that the times doubled...naturally since wireless is a bit slower I expected that and had no issue with the times.Mobile-Me - I have not tested the mobile me features just yet but will be testing them in the days ahead and post my results here.So far I feel this router has hit perfection and will now find a permanent spot in my home...at least until something better hits. Please do leave me comments with suggestions on the review and or any questions you may have.

Recently began to have issues with multiple wireless devices throughout the house (laptops, smartphones, and PS3) dropping signal to my 6+ year old Linksys router. Furthermore, my Linksys router would give me 1 bar of signal strength throughout the house even when in the same room...not sure how that works? It eventually got to the point where I was fed up with my current router and started to do some online research. After narrowing it down to a few models I wound up going with the Apple Airport Extreme based on its reviews and what I could find during my online research. I was a bit hesitant to purchase this product as I *do not* own any Apple products and this would be integrating with a completely windows-based PC environment.Well, there was definitely nothing to worry about! As many of the reviews claimed on here installation was quite simple. I struggled to get the router to recognize itself within the 'Airport Utility' (software you need to install to setup the router) only to realize it was my own mistake and how I booted up the device. Note to others: Make sure you perform the proper 'power cycle' for your cable modem + router or else you'll have some issues with the router acquiring an IP address from your cable modem.Once I got past my own dumb mistake setup took no more than a few minutes. Went around the house and updated all my wireless devices to use the new router and I'm getting 3-4 bars (4 being the max) on most devices, nothing below a 3!! My PS3 has yet to drop its signal whereas my old Linksys was doing it every 5-10 minutes. Also, I paired up this router with the Motorola SB6120 Cable Modem (Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem) and my Comcast internet is BLAZING.

I ordered one of the used cards from Amazon. Under twenty bucks including shipping. The package didn't have any instructions, nor mounting screws. But there are several articles with photos on the web. I didn't have any mounting screws and didn't want to shop for them, so I just used glue :) Other reviewers aren't kidding it's a delicate install job. I have small fingers and it still took me over an hour to get it all done and the antennas snapped in. My wifi connection is rock solid now. Previously I was using an Asus USB wifi adapter, and it was kind of flakey and I had to run some wirelessutility.app. Now I have the standard wifi controls in my menu bar and it's all good.

Purchased from a military exchange.BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT:REQUIRED:Management Utility requires a downstream computer running a recent version of Windows or OSX.NOT DESIGNED TO BE MANAGED FROM A LINUX CLIENT.PROS:-No integrated web server for modifying device settings (must use AirPort Utility)-Manual Setup option includes all of the necessary tools to secure your network-Integration of External Hard Drives via integrated USB Port is SUPER easy (just plug it in)-Supports USB Hubs for more drives/printer sharing (I haven't tried this)-Supports Full US 101 Keyboard Character Set in Passwords/Pass Phrases-Works great in a "Double NAT" network environmentCONS:-Only three integrated "downstream" ethernet ports-Only one status light for system healthEXCRUCIATING DETAILS:NETWORKING:I purchased this router to better secure my mixed-platform network and aid our family's transition from WinXP to Mac. I ran the initial setup from a "Wired" PC and went immediately to the Manual Setup. Transition of all of my network devices from my older subnet to the new subnet was painless once I got over my own boneheaded mistakes. Throughput on the wireless side of my home network was increased significantly (as advertised) vs. my older Linksys Router. I've retained the older subnet to support some WiFi devices that can't support the latest security protocols. Despite the Armageddon like proclamations about "Double NAT-ing" I've experienced absolutely no problems with our internet enabled devices accessing the internet.AIR DISK:For me this was mostly painless, but there are some limitations worth noting. AEBS does not support NTFS, however this is a non-issue (keep reading to see why). AEBS supports FAT32 and HFS+ (FAT32 is grossly inadequate for modern hard drive sizes and hard drive image archival).PLEASE NOTE: If using an AirPort Extreme Base Station, even for a Windows environment, I recommend that you get a disk preformatted for HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). This will give you all of the advanced storage capabilities of a modern file system and the AEBS comes with software that will translate the HFS+ disk into FAT32 for your Windows PCs. SOME LEGACY SOFTWARE (in my case Ghost v9) will self-impose a 4GB file size limitation (part of the FAT32 specification), but Windows itself will roll with it.TIME MACHINE WITH AIR DISK (I no longer recommend use of this undocumented feature):There is a procedure for enabling an AirDisk for use with Time Machine. It's a NON-SUPPORTED/UNDOCUMENTED FEATURE of the AEBS. The process is very simple and requires no advanced knowledge (just a normal ability to follow instructions). I won't list the process here because this is a product review ("google" Time machine and AirPort Extreme). However, don't call Apple for help with this as it's not officially supported.(UPDATE APR 2011) - This will work for a month or two, and then unexpectedly quit. Further examination indicated a progressive build up of file system errors due to the way Time Machine interacts with target volumes (most likely the WHY behind Apple's decision not to support this feature). As a result, I quit using the AirDisk with Time Machine workaround and I now use a FireWire drive connected to a Mac as our Time Machine target.OVERALL:I think this is a great product for any networking environment that includes Macs. This solution should also be considered in Mixed Mac and Windows environments. The features on this router are optimized for the OS X operating system, so those utilizing a Windows only environment should pay close attention to the FAT32 limitations of the AirDisk feture.

For years I had been using a $10 Belkin wireless router purchased at a garage sale. When two members of our family purchased Apple notebook computers we found that the Apple computers seemed to be incompatible with the Belkin router. So, I purchased an Airport Extreme Router, and it worked for about three years. This year I purchased another one, because I expected that the one purchased earlier would go off to college with one of our family members. The newly purchased router died after about three weeks. The original one just died about a month ago. So, for about a month I operated "hard wired." Then I decided to try the $10 Belkin again, even though it had sat unused for several years. It's working fine. So, I would say that I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the two Apple Extreme routers for which I paid a total of $400. I suppose I could take the newest Airport Extreme router to the Apple store for warranty repair, however I had to pay my internet provider $50 to help me make this router compatible with my internet service. Figuring that "time is money," I have just shelved the two Apple routers, and will purchase some other brand if the Belkin ever stops working.

just replaced my linksys 310nCisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit Router, which was a 802.11n router for about $140 when i bought it, and that was fine for my 2 bedroom 1bath single story apartment, moved a couple months ago into a townhome and my router is setup downstairs, upstairs had horrible speeds and spotty connections, if i plugged in my 2010 Macbook Pro via ethernet it was awesome but other wireless it was worthless anywhere but in the same room as the router, i have Comcast and live in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA and pay for their "Ultra" service where im suppose to get 22mbps down and 5 up, via ethernet i actually get about 34 down and 8 up, with the new apple airport extreme i'm getting 32 down and 7.5 up!!! almost the same as being wired!!!! ahhhhh AMAZING!!! both my girlfriend and i use 2010 macbook pros and we also have a 2011 27" imac, and they connect to the airport extreme at the 5ghz wide channel setting automatically, if a friend brings over a pc laptop it connects to the 2.4ghz, you could also enable 2 separate wifi networks with the apple airport extreme and have a 2.4ghz network and a 5ghz network, so if you did want your guests to be able to use the 5ghz network you'll have to split it up, but it will make it slower, so its best just to leave it in the automatic setting, you can even make a guest wifi if you wanted so you dont have to give out your password to your own network!well worth it, i wouldnt suggest buying ANY other router if you value coverage for your entire house, and actually have a FAST broadband connection(ie: NOT dsl, and NOT economy or the $20-$30 cable internet package), if you have slow internet this router is just overkill, so upgrade your service!!

This product was delivered on time and works perfectly in my Mac Pro.Only issue that I had wasn't with the product itself but finding the antenna for the wireless and attaching it to the card. The antenna wires are stored behind drive bay 1 & 2 with a little bit of tape holding them to an area right near the bay 1 and 2 SATA connectors with the terminals tucked behind the motherboard a bit.Once I had the wires out and the card in I realized that it would be much more easy to attach the antenna wires to the card with the card not mounted on the motherboard. With the card in hand, and a good amount of light on the subject the antenna wires attached quickly. I then re-mounted the wireless card to the motherboard, plugged everything back together and turned the computer on.So nice to have the ability to use my wireless network.

After failed experiments with different brands and models of dual-band routers, I had about given up hope of finding a a reliable solution. Some routers were complicated to set up; others had poor range and/or connection speeds. Purchasing the Airport Extreme was a last-ditch Hail Mary effort, and the verdict - Touchdown!Though I don't personally consider these to be negatives that would impact a purchase, there are a few things you should be aware of before buying this. If you're looking for lots of advanced configuration options in order to fine tune every setting, the AirPort Extreme is probably not for you. On a related note, configuration is unlike any other router. You "log in" via Apple's AirPort Utility client rather than by opening a web browser and typing in the address (192.168.0.1, et al). There are only three Ethernet ports versus the four typically found on other routers. The only thing I think is a concern is that the AirPort runs warm, but at the same time, so do lots of other routers. In this regard it's little different than other models with internal antennas. The positive aspects of this router more than make up for the negatives. Configuration via the AirPort utility is very easy. I was up and running with both bands going at full WPA2 security in less than 10 minutes. Its range and speed are outstanding. I keep the router downstairs. My 5 GHz-capable laptop stays upstairs. Other dual-band routers, broadcasting at full strength, would only give me 2-3 bars and connection speeds of 70-180 Mbps with the occasional 240-270 Mbps burst. The AirPort extreme delivers 4-5 bars and a consistent connection of 270-300 Mbps with the occasional drop to 240. Getting all my devices connected to the router was simple as well. Even my finicky HP all-in-one printer was online the instant I put in the WPA key. The last thing I've come to appreciate is the single status light that glows a constant, soft green rather than the blue LEDs found on most other routers that flash like the Las Vegas strip. I've not tried the USB port, but the fact that it can do storage and printers is a nice value add. This is one of the costliest consumer routers on the market, but it's one of the simplest and most effective. Not only does it work, it works exceptionally well. You can't ask for anything more.

You get what you pay for. I've had a wireless network in my home for nearly a decade, and this is a far more reliable wireless router than any Netgear, D-Link, or Linksys consumer grade router I've owned. In nearly a year of service, I've never had to reboot it because it was flaking out. Compare that to once every week or two reboots on other routers, some of which didn't even last a year before dying. If you want a quality, high speed, high range wireless router that you never have to mess with, this is the one for you. We have mostly Apple devices, but I'd recommend it for Windows-centric households as well. No reason it wouldn't work as reliably with a Dell laptop and Android phone as it does with our iPad, iPhones, iMac, etc.

I purchased this product to replace a old Linksys WRT54GS which was constantly dropping my WIFI connections and reconnection was only made possible by power cycling the router. I have not experienced any drops with the apple router. I had a couple other older WIFI devices namely a XBOX USB wireless adapter, and a older wireless Linksys G PCI adapter in a desktop computer. I was not successful in getting either operational with the new router. I suspect that if I had reverted to WEP security vs WPA I probably could have gotten both these devices working. The XBOX 360 was located in close proximity to a hard wire so that was my solution. I purchased an inexpensive USB wireless adapter for the desktop computer. Initially, I had lots of problems configuring the router but it was my fault because the attached computer had a fixed IP address prefixed with 192.168.1 and the apple router was defaulted to IP range 10.0.1, once I resolved that everything worked as expected. I also think Apple could do better with documentation in regards to manual configuration of the device. I had to resort to the internet for help on much of the manual configuration. My guess is that the wizard would work well for most scenarios and I am an exception. I find the wireless range of this router to be at least equal if not better than that I experienced with the WRT54GS router. My router is located nearly in the center of my home. Overall, I am happy with my selection. The other router I considered was a new Linksys router but a family member had lots of issues with speed drop off which seemed to be an issue for many others as well.

Very simple to set up. It took me less than 10 minutes to set up my wireless in my home. I use this with my PC, iPads, Apple TV, Sony BluRay Player and speeds are incredible. It is only limited by the quality or your broadband service provider. Anyone that has made complaints about this being difficult to set up obviously is a person that probably can't set their alarm clocks either. I personally think my seven year old grandson could have easily hooked this up alone. Super easy to set up guest network access and simple to cloak your network as well. Easily five stars and well worth every penny!

This wireless router just replaced a Buffalo WHR-G54S running on the latest Tomato firmware. Not much to say about setup as just plug, but I want to correct some of the reviews stating that "you need to install the software on all the machines". That just didn't make sense and I purchased anyway. You do have to install the software on at least one machine to manage the router. You don't have to install it everywhere to use it. That clarifies that there isn't a web interface to the router. I venture to guess that it was a design decision over security to have it connect via a port besides 80. There's probably some client side certificate installed into the application to communicate with the router. If so that would be better security against malware infected machines trying to brute force 192.168.1.1 for access.Setup was a breeze and so far range is improved as well as perceived speed (haven't taken any measurements before or after) but the g/f seems to think so. Mind you it took a big leap to leave the Tomato router which hasn't required a reset in years since running tomato (minus the times it was turned off for a move). Having said that the airport has been running only a few minutes :) I'll update back but so far it gives the warm fuzzy that it'll hold up.What's connected are:Macbook (wireless g)iTouch (not sure as I don't use it)2 Windows 7 64 notebooks (wireless n)1 Windows 7 64 desktop (ethernet)HP all in one 7600 (ethernet)Logitech Revue (wireless n)2 Playstations (wireless g)1 WII (wireless g)

I've always used non-Apple routers because they always cost less for more features. In my situation, I typically need at least 4 wired ports for various devices in the house, and this unit only has 3. However, I've begun to rely more and more on Apple's airtunes technology for playing music on various speaker sets around the house. On my old Linksys router, the music would skip and lose it for a while, and this was happening with increasing frequency. So I decided to get the Airport Extreme hoping it would solve all Airtunes issues. I figured if Apple can't make it work, nobody can. I am so happy I did, because it has solved all of my airtunes problems. Ever since I bought the Extreme two months ago, I have never had to turn it off or reset it, and I have not had a single problem with airtunes.Keep in mind I'm a heavy user. Running Netflix all the time wirelessly to my PS3, supporting multiple laptops, phones, tablets, and desktop machines. NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM.The downside? Only 3 external ports. I really needed four, so I bought a 4-port gig switch to supplement. Not ideal and it adds to the cost, but honestly, with the reliability of this thing, I don't care about cost. I just need it to work. The only other gripe is I wish there was a web interface, or some other way to access it from my iPad and iPhone. But all in all, if you're having any router issues and want to get rid of them, try this out. It solved all of my problems.

I'm not a computer whiz but I can program in a couple of languages, handle databases etc. and I can't for the life of me (after hours consulted the internet and talking to the computer guys at my office) get this to work. For some, depending on your set-up, it will work rather easily. If you're not so lucky, it will become a terrible time suck and make you feel like smashing into a wall. I suggest buying a different product.

Worth its weight in gold.I have a 60mb/10mb internet connection, shared wirelessly among multiple computers and various other devices:1x Mac Pro (802.11n)1x MacBook Pro (802.11n)1x MacBook AIR (802.11n)1x Apple TV (802.11n)1x iPhone (802.11g)1x Sony Blu Ray Player (802.11g)The problem is, my prior wireless router was 802.11N, but needed to run within the 2.4Ghz "A,B,G,N" spectrum so as to work with all N & G devices. The advertised speed was 54mbps, but would peak at about 23mbps, transmit & receive. As a result, no device in my apartment, aside from those connected occasionally via ethernet cable, could benefit from the massive bandwidth provided by my internet provider. Instead of doing the smart, frugal thing and downgrading my internet service to a lower tier, I instead opted to see what I could do to improve the speed of the wireless network. The Linksys/Cisco Experience:Not knowing that Apple now sold a "Simultaneous Dual Band" router, I opted for the slightly more expensive Linksys/Cisco WRT610N router, which is capable of the Simultaneous Dual Band" function. It worked admirably at first, allowing most 802.11N (5Ghz) hosts in my apartment to make use of *most* of the massive internet bandwidth. On average, each 802.11N host was now capable of 40mbps (+/-) transmit & receive. The problem with the Linksys was that the speed degrades, to mere single digit megabits (even lower), over time, specifically if you do a lot of streaming, such as: video gaming, torrent download/upload, file sharing or movie downloads. I had to reboot the router on a daily basis, to get the speed that I paid for. Sometimes twice a day. UNACCEPTABLE! There is a giant thread on Linksys' support forums about this very flaw. No solution from Cisco/Linksys.The Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (Simultaneous Dual-Band):I'll keep this simple:(802.11N 5Ghz)--54mbps to 64mbps send & receive on the LAN--62mbps (sustained) to 66mbps, from the WANI used "iStat Pro" and "Net Monitor" to run each benchmark, several times. I haven't benchmarked the 2.4Ghz spectrum as of yet.I've since ordered the previous model AEBS (the one without dual band), used, so that I may extend the network. Since all devices are stored in two separate rooms, I figured I'd extend the network using the 2nd AEBS, turn off the Airport card of each computer/device, and plug them in via ethernet to their nearest AEBS. This will, hopefully, improve the speed a tad more or at least limit the speed fluctuation and jitter inherent of wireless networks. At the very least, it'll reduce the amount of radio waves dancing around my apartment.I live in a large condominium with dozens of other nearby interfering wireless networks, so I have a feeling I won't be able to get much more performance out of the AEBS, but, needless to say, I'm very satisfied.

I've had my AEBS for about five months and overall it's worked great. Setup is simple and the available features seem to work fine. I had a drive hanging off the USB port that I was using to backup a laptop via Time Machine but I removed it due to many reports that it's not a reliable way to backup with Time Machine. The device rarely ever needs to be restarted and WiFi coverage is a bit better than it was with my older WRT54G. An Apple TV connected via WiFi seems to stream rentals much better if 802.11n mode support is enabled (I find this odd since my cable connection isn't especially fast - not when compared to a the speed of 802.11g, even when accounting for overhead).I'd give it five stars but it seems to be unable to properly handle incoming PPTP VPN connections to a Windows system. Some versions might work with certain firmware versions but mine never did. I could establish a connection but it would always die.

To start, I run a mix environment. I have 1 Macbook, 1 XP PC, 1 Vista PC, 1 Ubuntu laptop, 1 HP ex470 homeserver, 1 PS3, 1 Xbox 360, and 1 Wii. This router is the third router I have ever owned. I owned two Linksys w54g before. Each time I moved, I left the router for person who stayed behind. This time, I moved in with my wife and decided to purchase the Apple Extreme because I wanted wireless N and I do like Apple products and wanted to try and see if it was worth the price.First Impression and setupThis product, like all other Apple products was neatly packed and beautifully designed. Setup was very easy. Since I did not have an old router to migrate previous settings from, I had to start a new setup. The process was very easy and I love the ability to setup Guest Network. It probably took me 15 mins to get the router set up and my hard wired XP PC to access the internet. No problems what-so-ever. Like all the other reviews, I did not like that I had to install the utility software to setup the router however, I knew this before the purchase. The next step was to setup the rest of my devices. Adding almost all of the other devices was a breeze.......except for the Xbox 360. I kept getting the "NAT is STRICT" message. I tried setting up a DMZ for the 360 according to some online tutorials but it still would not work. The final solution was to switch the modem to bridge mode and let the Router handle the NAT. Once I completed all the necessary setups, I kept getting drops in signals. Sometime it would be at 4 bars and sometime I would get 1 bar. My Linksys had no problems handling all of my devices out of the box so I don't understand why I have to jump through hoops to get the Apple one to work.I also had to setup a static IP for the HP homeserver but I knew I had to do that going in because the Apple Extreme doesn't suppot UPnP [..]Finally, I set up the shared drive through the router. That was also a hassle. Initially, I got the drive connected and every computer on the network could see it. After I rebooted my windows machine, I could not connect to the share drive. Somehow, the apple utility would not accept the "SAVED" password that I assigned it during setup. Not sure why. I reformatted the harddrive to a Mac format (It was Fat 32 before) and connected the drive and started over. Still nothing. The linux and mac notebook saw the drive just fine but none of the windows machine could. Then, out of the blue, everything started working again. In conclusion, if you're running an Apple only network, go for it. This router rocks and is very easy to setup. If you're running a mix environment, you might want to think twice about dealing with the hassle. Xbox gamers......you will probably run into setup problems if you're try to connect wirelessly. Google it and you will see that there are plenty of people out there with the same problem. I was unaware of the connectivity problems with the 360 prior to purchasing this device. If I had know about it, I would've probably gone with the Dlink wireless N dual band router which has also gotten good reviews. I gave it 4 stars because once you get it setup, the router just work. I docked it one star because the setup was a hassle for mix environment and the problems I encountered with the network drive.Update: It seems my shared hard drive issue is related to the new firmware 7.4.2. A lot of people reported losing connection to the hard drive once they upgraded to the new firmware.

There a lot of good reviews here already about the AEBS. All the good ones are true. But here's what got me raving about Airport Extreme: I never had trouble with my Linksys and then Netgear routers, until I wanted to extend the range to cover the whole house. I spent hours grumbling and fussing with irritatingly old-school web interfaces to get my two Netgear routers to work together. Finally, I broke down and got an AEBS. Great results. Later, I wanted to extend the range even further than AEBS would go. I got another, and expected to have hours of fuss again. But no! Within 10 minutes of setting the device on the bookshelf near the patio, I was done. Then I got another one for the far side of our new house. Hey ho, it works perfectly. And hey, our printers are all connected to the network without a single problem. Now I can print weird stuff on my wife's office printer, just to freak her out. Well, it worked the first couple times anyway! And hey another bonus -- I've added an external hard drive to one (upgraded my wife's macbook's hard drive) and that too, works without a hitch.I've been using an Airport Extreme for almost two years. I decided to write this review after being asked to fix the Netgear routers at my children's school. Ugh!!Really, spend the extra money on this router instead of the in-store special on one of the others. Your time and sense of peace are totally worth the few extra bucks.

This enables you to have very fast wireless internet, especially with a newer Mac computer, and it was pretty easy to set up.1. Speed. AI tested the speed at Speedtest.net, and using this router achieved a download speed of 19.66 Mbps, and upload speed of 3.12 Mbps, which is only slightly slower than what I get by plugging directly into the modem (a Motorola Surfboard): 21.51 Mbps download and 4.24 Mbps upload. This is important because often when you hook up a wireless router to your modem, it significantly slows the service, by half or more. I ran this test on my new MacBook Pro, which let me take advantage of this router's 5 GHz network. (As you probably read in the product description, this router offers 2.4 GHz for older computers, and 5 GHz for newer computers).2. Ease to set up. B+This was fairly easy to set up. The only difficulty was that I bought a refurbished model, and the seller had not properly reset it to default settings. Once I realized this, I reset it and it started working. On the downside, it does get confused when I unplug it from the modem and then plug it back in. In the rare instance where I do that, I have to restart the modem.

I bought this for a summer Lion hackintosh project, so my need for the card is specific to Mac OS X. It works just fine, like any wifi card should. The only issue is that Lion does not recognize it as an Apple-branded AirPort card, just as wifi. As far as I can tell, this only affects a couple of services, like AirDrop. But if you're trying to make a really vanilla system, you might want to steer clear of this, as it won't show up as an AirPort unless you're into kext or plist editing. While I haven't tried it yet, I hear this card works OOB as an AirPort Extreme: Atheros AR5BXB92 Wireless Card 802.11B/G/N

So I load the software and hook this up and it doesnt work....flashing yellow. Problem ID'd - if you're on Windows XP you need Service Pack 3 downloaded from the MS site, great. So I unhook new router, get online directly thru the cable modem, download Service Pack 3, restart, and hook up the router again. Yipee!! Solid green light! It works, we are done! However my hard-wire ethernet connection will not work. And my wireless card (netgear) on my other PC is configured, says it's connected to MacRouter, but it wont connect either. And here's the kicker, my daughter's Mac Book does the same - says its connected but doesn;t work. So after spending a few hours chasing it around on two different days, time to repack it & send it back to Amazon, get my $$ back, Hooked up my old Netgear router in 5 minutes (or less), its working slow but just fine.I'm an Apple fan but trying to get this thing to work sucked the life out of me.ps - I have a BSME & grad degree, not a techie geek but not a techie moron either.

We're an Apple household so this review may be somewhat biased. We're also pretty average users (so are unable to provide 8011N speed tests etc).I debated between the Time Machine router and Airport Extreme. In the end, I opted for the Airport Extreme. I felt the ability to choose and connect any drive a benefit (especially considering drive costs are dropping). For someone who knows little about wireless routing and networking, Airport Utility made set-up quite easy. I attached a cheap 2TB drive partitioned for file sharing/storage and Time Machine back-ups. Connecting Airport Extreme to the Express (which is attached to the receiver) was also a breeze.Shared drives are visible in the 'Shared' section of the Finder and iTunes/Airfoil see the Airport Express for audio streaming. Other feature such as Guest Networking and remote access to shared storage via Mobile me have not been tested yet.

I have purchased several routers the past several years. I have primarily used Netgear products but due to the purchase of an apple tv, xbox 360, 2 iphones, and I wireless laptop this Netgear constantly disconnected. I went to best buy and asked the associate what he recommended. He pointed the apple extreme but after seeing the hefty price tag I decided to go with a Belkin N600 instead. I had this unit for 1 day and it wouldn't even recognize my iTunes. The software wouldn't even install. Frustrated I vented to the wife about the problem. I told her about the Apple Extreme router and that I should have purchased it all along but didn't due to the price. She reminded me of all the money I spent on routers over the past few years and wouldn't it make sense to purchase the "Cadillac" of routers and be done.I bit the bullet and bought one. Setup was a breeze and this thing has not disconnected on me once. This is by far the best router I have ever purchased. I am slowly transitioning to an apple household. The usb port is great also. I can save files from my wireless laptop to my external hard drive which I have connected.Do yourself a favor purchase this router you won't be disappointed!

In the past, I purchased a separate modem and router, and when I could not get them to work, I gave up in disgust and purchased an all-in-one unit. However, I found that the all-in-one units did not always have the greatest range for wireless connectivity.I am somewhat familiar with Apple products because I recently purchased an Imac, so I when I read other reviewer's comments about this router being "plug-n-play", I decided to give it a try. However, I was a little nervous because some people said it was difficult to use with a PC, and I have both. When I received the router, I plugged it into my modem and set it up using the Airport utility on my Imac. It took me five minutes (less time than it took to activate my internet and set up the modem!). My PC also recognized it wirelessly right away and when I plugged an ethernet from the PC to the router, I had no problems. That being said, I can't comment on whether it would be as easy to set up if you have only a PC and no Mac because I set it up using my Mac. Therefore, when I say that my PC worked fine with it, please consider that. However, if you have Macs and PCs, you will be very happy with the ease of use.As far as range goes, I have no problems with connecting wirelessly to a computer that is about three hundred feet away, and the speed is awesome. I don't have cable, so I stream from Hulu, and the picture quality is amazing with absolutely no hesitation at all. This is definitely a quality product and worth the price.

I purchased this router to replace an older Motorola DD-WRT based 802.11a,b,g router. It is being used as the router and wi-fi access point to my Motorola Surfboard cable modem in a mixed platform environment. It provides connectivity to several Mac OSX computers, Windows Vista & XP computers, 2 printers, network switches, Nintendo Wii and wireless internet hand-held devices. It is important to remember that any router is as good as the complexity of the network. In that regard the Apple Airport Extreme is quite good.Main features: Well built with an excellent design that doesn't heat up too much. Supports dual-band wifi 802.11a,b.g and n. Has a separate guest network that will allow the user to configure it with a unique identifier and password that is different from the main network and prevents guests from accessing individual machines on the main network, but allows guests to connect to each other. It also supports a VPN. It supports the Apple Bonjour protocol for easy file sharing within your network.Configuration & administration: Its best to configure this router from a Mac OSX machine since the Airport Utility is already on a Mac. For a Windows machine, configuration involves installing the utility, which is a drawback. However, setup and configuration is a snap and you can be up and running in minutes. It is by far one of the easiest routers to setup.Wi-fi range: The 802.11n is solid in a 50ft radius. My router is in a closet and there is no problem. The a/b/g is also better than many, but signal is weak for hand-held internet devices like phones with wi-fi in the 50 ft range, but this would be true of any router. The Airport Extreme has a built in antenna in the case which provides sufficient gain.Security: Although the Airport Extreme uses a NAT firewall, it is probably a modified NAT. However, it is compatible with many different operating systems and does not have compatibility issues. Linksys on its newer wifi routers is using an SPI firewall which may have some issues with Windows 7. I think the goal is to find sophisticated firewalls which don't drop or corrupt packets and at the same time do it for a reasonable consumer cost. Most other consumer wifi routers which are reliable are using DD-WRT firmware which is entirely open source and could be subject to a higher security risk. Apple's firmware for the Airport Extreme is closed, and although I'm all for open source, in this instance I'm glad. It also uses the latest WPA/WPA2 security. I think the only flaw here is that I don't know how it can allow you to setup a DMZ should you have the need, but for most consumer use it's not necessary.I think Apple has done very well with the Airport Extreme and is priced very reasonably right now in comparison to what the competition is offering. Additionally, Apple's service support is better than D-Link and Linksys for those who may be having problems.Comparable models:D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit RouterD-Link DIR-855 Xtreme N Duo Dual Band Draft 802.11n Media RouterLinksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless RouterD-Link DGL-4500 Xtreme N Selectable Dual Band Draft 802.11n Gaming Router

I've had linksys and netgear routers for 9 years prior to purchasing this airport extreme and I have to say, this thing beats the hell out of the competition. I only purchased this router because a buddy of mine has the same thing and told me that outside of updating, he never had to reset the router since installing it the first day(He's had it for over 2 years now). I've had this product for a week hooked up to a hard drive and a printer through a USB hub and everything works perfectly and smoothly. Unlike the linksys and netgear, I haven't had to restart the router after a week of pure 24/7 abuse (downloading, gaming, printing, and reading and writing on the hard drive over the wireless with 4 computers in the house). This router might be the last one I ever need.

After going through 3 routers (ISP 2wire; then a Dlink 655, then an ASUS RT-16) in the past 5 years that all had various issues (dropping connections regularly, going MIA completely for 5-15 minutes, needing to unplug and replug) I decided to finally give Apple a try. I installed it last week and so far, so good! It hasn't dropped once and the connection is fast, solid and reliable. The thing just works. I work from home so I need a rock solid router and so far, I have no regrets about this. The price is high, but if you count up all the time and money I've lost with the other routers, it's well worth it. This router supports:5 PC computers (mixed wifi; 4N, 1G), 2 Android smartphones and 1 iPhone.Cons: With my ASUS RT-16 running Tomato, I could do network printing. Airport Extreme supports only some printers for network printing... I wish it was better. However, will trade off a rock solid connection any day over network printing! You pay for what you get... I'd highly recommend this product.

This is not a review for the item itself, but a warning for other customers. I ordered this item via Amazon, not fulfilled by Amazon that was being sold by another vendor. When I received the item, I received a brown box item, that was not in the retail package. Usually, this means that it's a refurbished item. How do I know? Because I've sent a failed Airport under warranty, and this is what they ship back to you. Being a frequent chopper here, I'm disappointed for this. I actually ordered the item with express shipping, and now I have to wait another day. I have used this product before, and it's a good router. There's nothing magic about it as Apple may want you to believe. You can probably get something comparable or better for less money, but the family member that wants this setup insists on this because they are using an iPad, and Macbook.Update:I received the replacement today, and unfortunately, it's another brown box item. I was assured by customer service that the replacement would be a retail package. Now, I have to order this item from somewhere else. I ordered this item with express shipping because I needed it right away, but I have to drive to the Apple store, or wait until next week. The reason this is a big deal is because usually, brown box item may not be covered by Apple's warranty. My original rating was 3 stars because I wanted to give Amazon to make right of this problem, but I have now changed my rating to 1 star.

I bought the Airport Extreme for two reasons: 1) I needed a 802.11n router, and 2) I wanted to extend my network using an existing Airport Express. The router works fine as a router (although it has a more limited access to features and settings than my previous Linksys router). But when I set it up to extend my network, it extended ok, but when I stream music from my iPhone to the Express, as soon as the iPhone switches from Extreme to Express, the streaming stops. I then have to re-start it. Then when I move back toward the Extreme, it stops again. This is precisely the reason I bought the Express...to stream music from my iPhone as I move through the house and into my backyard. An expert in the Apple Support Community says: "Apple is well aware of this. That is all we know."Sad. I will probably return the router.

I bought this Airport Extreme at the same time I bought my iMac with the 27" monitor. I wanted to use it to print and access a hard disk on my home network. The setup was fairly easy. However, I worked for two days, off and on, to set up access to the hard disk. Setting up my Brother printer was no problem. After reading the documentation which came with the Airport, I still could not get it to work. I then tried looking up the solution using a Google search. Finally, a Mac users site mentioned that the disk had to be formatted with the Mac system. After doing that, it showed up as a shared device. Why this wasn't mentioned in the documentation that came with the Airport Extreme is beyond me. That's pretty basic I guess, but how could you overlook that in the documentation?I also agree with another reviewer that the range could be better. Perhaps locating it someplace else in the house would work, but you're limited in where you can place these things. If the best position is on the refrigerator, I'll bet your wife wouldn't want it there, and I wouldn't blame her.Printing from another computer worked fine. I plan on adding another hard disk (you need to get a USB hub to do this) so I will update this review depending on what results I have with that. Now that I know about the formatting, I think it will probably work fine.Overall, I'm happy with the product. I bought the iMac because I was tired of the constant Microsoft crashes. Bottom line is that I would recommend the Airport Extreme. It's quite easy, but just remember to format your drive for an Apple if you are using a Mac.

With a Linksys router roughly 8 years old I started to notice completely dropped connections on my computers and consoles (when I'm online gaming). In addition, with online gaming I had noticed my connections were at 3 bars as opposed to the max of 4 bars of connection strength. This was with a wired connection two feet from the router. I would have to reset my router and then everything would come back, although with the still-weak signal. After moving to the Airport Extreme I have been disconnected exactly zero times in over a month of heavy use, I'm always at 4 bars in online play, and the things was easy as pie to get working. Very happy with the purchase....I just wish it came in black to match everything else I own.

When I recently decided to upgrade to a router supporting a-band I shopped the Apple and Cisco choices. I chose this one because I have mostly Apple equipment. While I have been happy with their computers I consider their routers a moderate struggle to configure. Also the settings are a bit more cryptic (nonstandard) than Cisco's. Nevertheless I wanted the following advantages of this AirPort Extreme1. Extending the range with Apple's WDS relay and remote options2. Using iTunes over the AirPort3. Mounting a drive on the base station (comparably priced Linksys routers don't offer this). So I went with the AirPort and it satisfies my needs. The a band works fine and the new software / firmware is an incremental improvement over my previous AirPort base stations. On the bad side I wish configuration were more straightforward. Apple's documentation is sparse and the settings options are, in some cases, not standard. For instance the "multicast rate" selection has low, medium, and high, rather than explicit rates. Some blog searching can tell you how to use the AirPort, but Apple should offer better support. Also I have not been able to extend the WDS network. My few attempts have failed. I am sure if I dug through more blogs I could get it to work (as I have in the past). But I have established that it is not always easy to do (as some blogs confirm).Overall I recommend this product. It does what I need, working as a single base station including the a band. I would say it is at a decent price point compared to Cisco and others. As with anything Apple it is no bargain next to the bottom of the line competitors, but feature-per-feature is priced pretty well.

I stream a lot of video (even HD content on my TV via Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon) and it has worked like a charm. I have always appreciated the elegant simplicity of Apple products. And while the Airport Extreme (MC340LL/A) is the best and most capable network base station I have ever used, it still manages to carry all of its duties with common sense simplicity. Two months before acquiring the Airport Extreme I had purchased yet another router. It was a well known, respected brand which had garnered rave reviews, and yet, two floors up from the router's location, its signal was not the best. So I ordered the MC340LL/A anticipating that Apple would yet again provide my solution.First, it was the simplest installation I've ever experienced. All my WiFi enabled electronics "saw" it immediately. Secondly, I discovered that range and consistent connection were no longer problems. Never fail signal two stories up. Thirdly, the Extreme has one light on it. If that one light is steadily glowing green, its working. Being electronics challenged I really appreciate this one light feature. How many times have I been on the phone with techs from router providers doing the "Which light is blinking/is steady now" game. One light tells the whole story.I also appreciate the simultaneous transmission of the two signal bands. Any WiFi device is welcome and optimally connected here and I can even set up a separately passworded account for guests !Other nice features include the ability to wirelessly share a printer and/or external hard drive. Haven't tried these features yet, but I'm sure they work with Applesque perfection as well.As long as the Airport Extreme is produced, I will never use another base station/router. Elegant simplicity... Yes !

Originally, I called TiVo's tech support to find out what brand wireless router to get that would be compatible with my TiVo. I wanted to be able to transfer video to and from my Mac computer and the TiVo. The guy I talked to suggested a Linksys, so I ran up to Staples and bought one. The Linksys router had absolutely no instructions for Mac users and I had to call their tech support to get it set up. It was my first wireless router and I knew nothing about networking. It took about an hour on the phone to get it working. Several times I had to try again and again to get his instructions to kick in properly. I would save a password then it would revert back. Eventually it did get up and working. The Linksys was fine for a year, but then I did a firmware upgrade on the suggestion of a cable tech who was trying to find out why I was having cable problems. Suddenly, the video I was transferring to the TiVo from my Mac was looking messed up (tiling).I called Linksys' tech support and they wouldn't talk to me unless I paid $30 for the call since it was out of warranty. I decided not to pay since I could buy another router for that price and I would definitely not buy another Linksys. I was thinking of a Belkin which I hear is more Mac compatible. While I was thinking it over, my husband just went and ordered me this Airport Extreme. It cost more than I would have paid myself, but now that I have it, I am very pleased. The Airport Extreme was so easy to set up. I was sure I would have to spend a little time getting it to work with the TiVo but it worked right out of the box. I just plugged it in and everything was working--my internet, the TiVo transfers and the video is coming to the TiVo in good shape too. Other bonuses is that the Airport Extreme has a wider range. I can now go outside the house and use the Wi-Fi on my iPhone whereas before I was limited to inside the house. This should be nice in the summer. My husband went and bought himself a MacBook and now he also uses the Wi-Fi.Once in a while if I get disconnected from the internet, I just unplug my cable modem, unplug the Airport Extreme, shut down the computer, then plug the devices back and wait for the lights to go green, then boot up again and all is good.

I have very thick walls, 2.5 feet of adobe, brick and rock. My server is in my study and the thick walls have caused dead spots and poor reception in my living room. I upgraded my Airport Express to an Airport Express 80211n (n) and used my old 80211g (g) as a remote, but that did not work. After a couple of visits to two Apple stores on a recent visit to the US and much research on the Internet, I replaced the Express (n) with an Extreme (n) (used on Amazon) though they are both supposed to have the same range, which is mostly dependent on the (n), not the size of the Airport. I also replaced the remote Express (g) with the Express (n). One of the Apple guys (pick the older more experienced ones as the younger ones don't know much more than the stock answers) said that it is true that the range depends on the (n), but that the Extreme's antennas are (is?) slightly larger and that that might help. Now with an Extreme (n) and a remote Express (n) I have coverage in the living room and the bedroom beyond, and the connection is faster. I might have gotten by with another Express (n) instead of the Extreme (n), but I figured I would try the slightly larger antenna on the Extreme since I live in Mexico and could not return items via mail.

Like all things Apple, this AirPort Extreme base station just works. From unpacking to surfing the net, the entire process took ~15 minutes. The dual-band functionality is a definite plus as in my apartment I usually can pick up at least 15 different wireless networks (2.4GHz). My MacBook Pro and my TV allow for a 5GHz wireless connection so I haven't to compete with interference. I've multiple products in my home that have Wi-Fi functionality that are both Mac/PC as well as the TV, Blu-Ray player, iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle, etc... These are both 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices. This AirPort Extreme allows for 50 connections and I'm sure in the future more things will be Wi-Fi enabled so there's room for growth. Who knows, one day even the coffee maker may be Wi-Fi.The computers are all networked together and share a hard drive and printer connected to the AirPort using a USB hub. The hard drive also doubles as my Mac's Time Machine backup. This unit doesn't run hot as others have commented on. Maybe a bit warm to the touch but nothing that is of concern. Since I don't have anything plugged directly into AirPort and am running totally wireless, only having 3 hardwired ethernet connections isn't a problem. The guest option is a nice touch - I've not used it but it is a good idea. I've not needed to do so, but being able to extend the network to achieve greater range is definitely a feature that I can see the functionality of.Definitely worth the price due to ease of use, features, and the lack of frustration when setting up.

My house is problematic with concrete floors and long distances. I also have a mixed network of Macs and PCs (plus an iPhone and HTC Incredible). In the last year I have tried the top models of Belkin, D-Link and Cisco, each of which had significant problems of range, setup or stability. I finally tried this router, expecting it would just be pretty packaging for an average router. Completely wrong. Apple nailed it with this router. It took fifteen minutes to set up several computers and two phones on the network (it only took that long because I was running all over the place). This is compared to several hours with tech support on the Cisco trying to get that network stable on all of the computers. This is the first router I have had that hits every room in the house and never disconnects any of the devices. Kudos to Apple, it is not just a pretty face.

Unbox. Plug in. Run AirPort Utility and follow the prompts. Enjoy Internet.I was a little nervous about setting up the new AirPort. It seems like every time I touch the hardware/settings associated our Internet connection, the service is down for 3 - 4 days. Apple and their fantastic products strike again, however, with a truly plug-and-play experience. My only gripe is that I was hoping the wireless signal would extend a little farther into our pool area than it does. But this probably has (a lot) more to do with my placement of the router than with the device itself. Perhaps it would work better with another, newer (receiving) gadget than the one I tried, as well. Bearing that in mind...thoroughly satisfied!!!
