WANTED NOTICE: Performance junkie with O/S and programs on an SSD looking for a place to put his small collection of pictures, music, and home videos. User is spoiled by near-instant load times of SSD's, so low latency and quick response time is a must. Enough space to create a C-Drive backup partition a definite plus.CONS: People concerned with the noise level of their PC's should probably look elsewhere. This is a performance drive though. I always chuckle when noise comes up as a con in reviews of high-performance products. Don't you people have 4,000 RPM fans cooling your rads? What about the noise-cancelling headphones that you surely own? Between 8 and 10 years ago, I purchased 2 W/D 74 Gig Raptors, and they both still work fine. I bought this hard drive to use in my DVR. I will not mention my service provider whose TV service is great, but I have been through about 4 DVR's in the 4 or 5 years I have had this service due to hard drive failures. The DVR uses a Segate hard drive, which for me, have failed in about a year or less, and then I loose all of my recordings. So when my replacement DVR arrived, I booted and set up the new DVR, and then took it apart and installed this 500 Gig Raptor drive because of my past experience with longevity from Raptor hard drives, and because I am tired of loosing my recordings. I will continue to update as time goes on, but I look forward to quite a bit more longevity from the Raptor as compared to the Segate. Come to think of it, I have never had dependable service from Segate drives, not even in my HP computers and computers I build and repair. Remember, anything that turns at 10000 RPM must be well built, and these hard drives are.Update. This hard drive works really great in the Uverse DVR and it takes 12 minutes to swap, and doubles the space for recordings. It is also much quicker on the seek times, and makes a better recording because the disk plate in the Raptor is actually one of the best in the world.

This 1TB drive lives up to expectations. WD designed the unit to provide rapid and repeated seeks that might be required in a server without wearing out. My application here is for the drive to act as a paging file. In a system where I have 96 GB of RAM and 10 partitions spread through 3 other hard drives, virtual memory is almost certain to be requested by the system during heavy application loads. The system default is to assign a selected amount of space on each partition to be used as a paging file, which is temporary disk storage for system-managed transfers of data between actual RAM and the data's true location on a given partition.To ease the load on all partitions, I installed this drive whose sole purpose [other than for storage of rarely used files] is to act as the paging file for all partitions in the system. Using the System control panel, it is easy to navigate to the tab that allows users to define paging files. The procedure is to turn off the paging files on all drives except this one, and define the paging file on this drive/partition to be 1.5 times the size of physical RAM in the system.All of this is easy to set up, it works like a charm, and I don't have to worry about repeated requests for data-transfer and paging-file operation occurring simultaneously on the same drive.

This Velociraptor drive is a fast, somewhat loud, but highly performant drive.WD, for some crazy reason, has housed it in an "IcePack Mounting Frame" instead of something durable.The IcePack mounting frame is basically a heat sink chassis (which increases the noise of the drive) with a connection extender - it extends the sata and power connections from the drive itself to the outside of the frame, using a little board fabbed just for this purpose.THAT board is a piece of JUNK. The drive *itself* has nice, durable power and SATA connectors. However, the plastic pins on the outside of the IcePack are super flimsy, and can break during even cautious and gentle use.This means, of course, that you are left with a fully functional, highly performant drive for which removing the IcePack frame voids the warranty of the drive itself. This probably reduces the risk of WD actually having to ever honor the warranty - if you have a fully functional, performant drive with all your data on it, and the only thing wrong with it is a completely unnecessary part, how likely are you to RMA it instead of simply removing the unnecessary part and voiding your warranty while you are at it?It's kinda slimy. Fast, dependable, loud drive (quieter when it's not in the IcePack, btw), but it's kinda crappy to send someone a great drive in a terrible frame and then join the warranties together. For a drive in the "enthusiast" category, I think WD should do a lot better.

I bought this drive to replace the factory Hitachi HDS721010CLA632 1tb SATA 6 drive in my HP Workstation (Intel I7 8-core, 12 GB RAM).With the factory drive, the Windows 7 ratings were all 7.6 except for the disk throughput. That rating was 5.9 with the Hitachi. With the new WD 10K RPM Velociraptor, the rating is still 5.9. I ran a few other benchmarks and it looks like the drive is averaging 200 MB/sec +/- on most reads and writes (some slower, none faster), so it is meeting its specs overall. Overall performance and feel is exactly the same as the Hitachi except that I paid another $215 and gave up a much quieter drive.I am reasonably sure that the lack of performance improvement is related to the drive and not an I/O bottleneck. I had a Kingston HyperX 120 GB SSD in this workstation while I was making some adjustments. With the SSD the drive ratings maxed out and the feel was like a machine three times as fast.I suggest skipping this drive if your existing drive is anywhere near the class of the HDS721010CLA632. You are not likely to see much improvement, if any.

I've gone through 2 Intel brand SSDs, and I got to say, they were a real disappointment. Sure they are hella fast right out of a box, but only a few months after purchasing, they stutter randomly, locking up the entire system for hundreds of milliseconds, then maybe a year later, writes start coming back corrupted, making the drive completely useless. As far as I'm concerned, the lifetime on SSDs is a scam when you factor in the price. There's a reason they only come with a 1-year warranty. They don't expect them to last to much longer than that. There really should be a class action lawsuit against many of the SSD manufactures.Now about the VelociRaptor drives. I first purchased these drives way back in 2004 when they were only 36GB I bought two and put them in raid 0 and I was very pleased with the performance, very similar to SSD drives of today. I kept them running for almost 5 years before one of the drives died due to... a broken SATA port, around the same time I found a few corrupt sectors but I jimmy-rigged the port and it worked fine for another 6 months or so before I bought my first POS Intel overpriced junk "enterprise" SSD. (see above) Well I'm done with SSDs for the time being. Let someone else beta test these shoddy manufactured and cheaply designed box of chips. Two of these babies in RAID 0, you will see similar performance ideal for a majority of computing workloads at home, with superior linear writes/reads compared to SSD and way better lifetime and price per gigabyte.

The drive is fast and easily installed. However, if you have built a PC with silence in mind using noiseless fans, graphic cards, etc., you'll not appreciate this drive. The noise is in the form of a sort of muted/soft clicking sound that is only present when the drive is in the seeking stage. I've gotten use to it, so it's not that objectionable, but it would be nice if someone could make a 10,000 RPM drive without this annoyance.Contrary to what one reviewer has stated, the shroud designed to cool the drive is not useless. I've tested the drive's temperature on the top of the case and its running about 15 degrees cooler than the WD, 2 Gig drive right next to it. I wouldn't remove the shroud because that would void the warranty, so I'm not absolutely sure that it aids in cooling, but the possibility exists.By the way, the drive was shipped by Amazon in a factory-sealed, padded box and arrived in perfect condition. I've read from some folks that this drive shipped by other stores was not packaged properly to the point of banging around in the box it arrived in. This wasn't the case with Amazon.

Installs effortlessly, encased in it's own heat sync, very fast and one of the most reliable hard drives on the market. Although the price is a little steep, I found it to be $30 cheaper on Amazon. It's nice to have a blazing fast hard drive to run Win7 64...the boot time of my pc has been cut in half because of the VelociRaptor. I had a Seagate 7200 RPM 1T drive running Win7 and it took about a minute for the pc to fully boot to desktop. So, I cloned all of the data over to the Raptor and booted from it....WOW, what a huge difference in boot times! Even defragging the hard drive is cut in half. I also have a 600G VelociRaptor that is dedicated for Flight Sim X.....can't beat the speed, performance and reliability of WD VelociRaptors. I have owned a 300G Raptor in a previous pc build and it never failed after 4 years of intensive flight simulation use. I sold the previous build 1.5 years ago and that 300G Raptor is still going strong. This just shows how reliable Western Digital products are, but I know that some do fail from time to time. In my experience with Raptor drives, I have nothing but high remarks for this product.Amazon did a pretty good job on the packaging of the product, too. Furthermore, the delivery arrived on schedule. I have found NO issues at all with this product.

I ordered two of these expensive drives only to get two drives that would not install windows 7, neither in RAID0 nor on either drive individually. I suspect these are refurbished drives due to the fact that they were both in plain cardboard boxes with no cables or other accessories that you would expect to come with retail drives. If these are not labelled as refurb/oem, then amazon is practicing false advertising. Update 2/211/13: I was sent two replacement drives by amazon and one of them was a green 1TB drive in a mislabbelled box (obviously a problem caused by WD). Fortunately, the one that was actually a Velociraptor works great now. This is pretty sad though, as it took 3 drives to get one that worked, and like many other reviewers, I also think this drive is too loud and also not worth the price. WD's quality is going down the toilet. I'll be looking elsewhere for HDDS and SSD's from now on probably.

The WD VelociRaptor drives running at 10,000 RPM and with a 64MB cache are extremely quick. I have both a 500 GB and 250 GB models and both are fantastic. I use them in I5 3570 boxes that I have custom built myself. I run Xubuntu linux and VMs for Windows 7 and XP simultaneously and these drives perform very well giving me 10 second cold boot times and incredible Windows performance as well.The only down side to these drives is that they are noisy when accessed but, not when just spinning. My machines are very quiet normally so the HDD noise is somewhat more pronounced. Still, the price / performance / capacity of these drives have it all over SSDs which cost much more per GB and have much lower GB / $$$$.

This disk is running quite well. I placed it in one of my drive trays, attached the power and SATA connectors and my BIOS saw it as a blank drive, which is good, of course. Once in the OS (Win7 Pro 64-bit), I used the Acronis Clone software, obtained from the Western Digital website, to clone my original boot disk to the Velociraptor. That went well and was finished in about 8 minutes. After the clone, the Velociraptor was assigned as the boot disk, drive c: and the original boot disk was given another letter designation. The computer booted beautifully although it seemed to do so in about half the time. I didn't do a quantitative determination. I opened several programs that always seem slow to load and they seemed very quick. I think it's working OK.As time permits, I may actually measure its speed but my main reason for wanting a faster drive was for it to SEEM faster and it does. I know it's not as fast as an SSD but I don't have to worry about wear leveling or TRIM and it has a very high MTBF. It's ready for prime time and mission critical applications.It is very quiet in my quiet system. I could hear the seeking in the WD1002FAEX but I can't hear the Velociraptor.Motherboard: ASUS M5A99FXCPU: AMD FX-8150 8 cores at 3.6 GHzMemory: 16 GB (4X4GB) G.Skill 1866 MHz, 1.50V ("Ares") CL9PSU: Seasonic M12II 620W 80+ BronzeDisks: WD2500HHTZ, WD1002FAEX, Seagate 250GBGraphics: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850Amazon's packaging was very good for shipping a mechanical disk drive and it arrived in good time.

packaging=3Stars, Drive=5Star ...Been using Raptors since the 36Gb then 74 and so on . Never had one raptor fail using them in a dedicated A/V workstation .Super fast and this big drive is quiet too . Shipping was pretty bad though. Everything I ever got from amazon has been well packaged but this drive was just in a static bag between two plastic air pillows , able to freely roll around in the box past the air pillows. Whoever packaged this obviously has no clue what they are boxing up.To ship it like this is just unacceptable.The drive is working just fine so I got lucky , but seller please at least wrap some foam or bubble wrap around the drive or something to stabilize it in the box !!! When I opened it I just shook my head ...Great drive though ... 5 stars on the Velociraptor .

Have been using these drives for years just for PC Gaming. Quick load times in all games but especially in Skyrim. Seems to have improved my load times when making and editing home movies and movies for Facebook. I was using a slower drive due to my old WD Raptors being too small for all my applications so I upgraded to this drive and really noticed a difference. Great warranty. Get what you pay for in this drive. Better price at amazon then at newegg. Recommend for PC Gamers, but casual users can save with a slower drive and never notice the difference. Good luck with your build and remember never skimp on your power supply.

It's not quiet. The noise level is "reasonable" but still too much for me (my PC used to be silent prior adding this drive).I think a better solution for fast, quiet drive with such quantity of storage it a small SSD as "accelerator" (possible with Intel's Rapid Storage on Z68\Z77\X79 chipsets) and a higher capacity 2.5" HDD. I'm talking about a slim quiet HDD which's meant for laptops, such as the new HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM (I read it's super silent).However you should know the performance are ASTONISHING, Raptors are fast and reliable. Regardless the noise I'd give 5 stars.

I returned this HDD as it was slower than the 7200rpm Hitachi/Toshiba it was to replace and was unacceptably noisy. It must be defective as I can't believe that the manufacturer would sell these in this condition. I cloned the Hitachi/Toshiba with Acronis (Acronis works great!) so I could A/B them. The WD was slower on start up and so noisy I couldn't stand it. The Hitachi/Toshiba makes no sound that I can discern. Amazon returns was quick and easy. They had UPS come to my home to pick it up and it was no cost to me. The refund appeared on my CC prior to Amazon receiving the item back. Nice to know some huge corporation trusts it's customers, me anyways, unless it was a mistake. lol... Giant KUDOS to Amazon!

I bought this drive along with a couple of SSDs for my Ivy Bridge Hackintosh and surprising this almost keeps up with them as far as seat of the pants performance and feel is concerned. Some people have commented they are noisy but honestly in a room with normal ambient environmental noises it is virtually silent. However early in the morning when the house is completely still and quiet and i'm using this drive as a boot drive I can audibly detect a slight head-seeking noise coming from the drive, not at all annoying though. Overall love the performance of this drive and would recommend in a heartbeat.

The product works upon delivery. However, Amamax packaging was mediocre. The hard drive was in a static proof bag, packaged with popcorn and put in a box. I would suggest air bags or inflatable packaging. Delivery was great. Ran the WD diagnostics tool upon receipt to make sure it worked. No problems so far. I like it so far. It was not very loud when I ran the extensive diagnostics test. Response well to my old computer, but looking forward to how it runs on my new setup. I will be using this for backup and video editing. When the rest of my system arrives I will provide further updates on its performance. I really didn't care much about getting a SSD. Granted, they are faster but comparing the cost and small gb size just wasn't worth it. The Velociraptor has performed well enough for me. Boot up time is quicker compared to may old 7200rpm drive. Everything seems to be quicker from accessing files to loading problems. No more sitting around waiting. Haven't done any video editing yet but overall very satisfied with this drive. Installation was easy and so far no problems. Somebody asked me "Why only 4 Stars". Answer: Because I didn't do any video editing so don't want people to buy this and expect something faster. Maybe somebody that has used it for editing or converting video can comment on performance. As far as everyday computing use, it's definitely a 5 star drive.

In preparation for a conversion to a Samsung Pro 512 gb SSD I have cloned my old slow 7200 rpm C:\ drive to this Raptor drive. What a difference 10,000 rpm makes!!! Everything loads much faster. Can't wait for the next SSD price reductions so i can really amp up the speed factor.Raptor is a great near term solution if you don't want to pay $500 for 500 gb SSD.Drive cloning done with retail version of Acronis that works really well....

I have been looking at this hard drive for at least a year and I'm glad I finally purchased it. I am using an SSD for the operating system etc and the Velociraptor is the hard drive with all my games' pictures, downloads etc. This thing is fast. I tested my old hard drive which is WD Black 7200RPM and the read speed is 70.07mb/s and the write speed is 68.42mb/s. The WD Velociraptor has a read speed of 187.5mb/s and write speed of 188.8mb/s. That is on sata 3GB (sata2) as my motherboard does not have sata 6GB (sata 3) which this drive can use. I have seen benchmark tests on sata 6GB and the speeds on the WD VelociRaptor 1 TB has the drive performing around 215 MB/s read and 205 MB/s write for sequential speeds. The VelociRaptor still comes no where close to the access times of a SSD drives but since the prices are still high on SSD drives it is a great alternative compared to the 7200RPM drives and also having the 1TB of hard drive space is a big plus. I am very pleased on how much faster games load and play and my computer is much faster all around using the WD Velociraptor.

I use this as a boot drive, with a standard 7k harddrive as a storage drive. You can't compare this to an SSD, because it's a harddrive. And if you are like me, who have had their fair share of issues with SSDs over the past few years and want a rock solid performer with a 5 year warranty, this is your harddrive. Windows 8 boots in just a few seconds.

Great drive. No problem in installing it. The drive is very quiet, some commenting about the noise I do not hear any noise and it runs quietly. Also I have no problem with the plastic enclosure I think it is a good protective casing and is very easy to place it in the Dell HD Cradle as I do not have to use any screws. The drive slides in the bay. The drive has a 5 year warranty. I like the WD Drives and bought 4 of these to keep as a backup cloned drives. Peace of mind :-)

Been using it for several weeks now. Editing 5K RED footage in Premiere with no slowdown, no proxies. I'm sure this has a lot to do with Premiere's inner workings, but hey, a snappy drive can't hurt, right? Also, it's nice and quiet.

Love these as I have no desire to go with SSD . I just do not thrust them , too many hoops to jump thru and still too expensive. These raptors scream . benched them on a z77 chipset board running in AHCI , tapping in at 180 MPS , not too shabby for a mechanical drive , sure its no SSD but dependibility and a five year warentee form WD sold me

The drive is wonderful don’t get wrong about that, solid build and all. Manufacture date on mine was 27 Nov 2012. Arrived without dents or scratches just waiting for it to hit room temp. so I can install it. I will provide an update later with specs that I have when I install it as a storage drive for VM’s and see how the I/O is for them when being used.The only thing that displeases me is that it came in static bag supported on the ends; that’s why the -2 stars, if it’s OEM state it that’s all don’t be misleading.

Connected two cannon plugs and turned on; used new Windows 7 OS; up and running faster than I imagined. Didn't even stay up late as is the norm for such things!

This is the best mechanical hard disk you'll find around. I've been using this for years, since the first generation, and I love it. It's quick, silent, stays cool, has a long lifetime. And its Icepack is just nice, besides cooling the disk very well it makes it look wild.I use an SSD to run Windows, and Velociraptor as the storage drive. The cobination of both, with other good hardwares, makes my computer fly.

I had no problems installing and setting up the drives. They seem very fast and are not noisy at all, sometimes in a quiet environment you will hear them ticking, nothing excessive. From my experience WD makes the best drives. They seem to fail less than other brands.

i have not had a single issue with this drive. It reads and writes quickly, it is moderately quiet with the exception of that slight chirp that all HDD share, and it has a great memory capacity at 1TB. I typically install all of my development software on this drive as well as games.

Been running several WD 10K RPM drives for nearly ten years.. Never let me down yet.. Currently running two of these SATA3 drives for data.. mSATA for OS.. Makes a very fast system..

Hard drive that came with my computer failed at the six month point. So if I had to replace decided to upgrade. This drive is very fast compared to prior drive. And reliable so far. Some reviews said it was noisy but not really.

Have it as the data drive on the new computer I built. The C:/ is a 480 GB SSD. Hardly notice a difference in speed when going between the two.

Won't find a faster physical disc for this size and price. Drive runs quiet and cool (at least in my chassis) Sustains 90 MB/s over my 1Gb network writing to a 4 TB (4 discs) striped raid array (real world performance not synthetic). Great buy! Would like to get more to upgrade my servers raid drives.

I've been a fan of 10,000 rpm hard drives from Western Digital. This the fastest one yet (200MB/s for large sequential transfers). Fast, too, for small random transfers. It makes a great boot drive. Also if you are experimental, it makes a great "fusion" drive paired with a Solid State Drive (OS X).

I needed a fast, large capacity drive for photo editing and storage. SSDs are still too expensive. The Velociraptor drives are well known for their speed and reliability. It has worked great so far and I have no complaints.

So happy with the 1st one I purchased, I bought a second one. This thing really moves and I've been most impressed with the speed. I knew it was going to be faster than my 7200 platters but WOW does this thing move out!

Great price for speed and size. I've owned other fast 10k drives these are much faster. They are even faster then my first two SSDs I have them set up on a pci perc card on Raid 0. I find that Lightroom running on a pci ssd with catalogs running on these drives are almost twice as fast as a 1tb black 7200 WD.

Velociraptor is still a very good choice for good amount of space, very faster data transfer and also a good price if compare with SSD devices. In fact I have in my system a SSD 128G for operation system and velociraptor for data. I am very satisfied with the price x performance of this device.

10,000 RPM HDD ADDS TREMENDOUS SPEED. HOWEVER I HAVE HAD FAILURES ON SOME COPIES AND HAD SAME ISSUE ON 3 OF THE SAME DRIVES ON VARIOUS COMPUTERS.

It is the cheapest (about $100) fastest (10,000 RPM; SATA 3) drive available. It has a 5 year warranty. It is mostly heat-sink, as the working part is a 2.5 inch drive. This configuration protects it from static a little extra, as the circuit board is not exposed at all. I uses them in pairs (mirrored) or quads (raid10) as raid main drives. With Intel ICH9R, have used on Fedora Linux 17, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008r2 with no difficulty whatsoever.
