At 500GB this is a reasonably large capacity drive by today's standards, yet very low-priced, about 10 cents/GB including shipping. Though they're always 500GB with a 16MB cache there have been several generations of the WD5000AAKS originally with more platters. Recently the WD5000AAKS drives I've received are single-platter which lowers the weight, noise, heat and power consumption slightly. Sustained sequential read throughput now seems to be upwards of 120MB/sec (maybe 10-15% higher than the last two-platter version) and is basically the same as the Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB drive. As it should though, the Caviar Black outperforms the Blue on random access. These are so cheap now that it's easy to justify running extra drives so that you have a backup.

I am running Windows Vista with this as the master drive, and my old Hitachi Deskstar being demoted to slave drive. According to HDD Tune this thing is a 40% increase across the board (read, write, seek, and burst transfer), and thats compared to the SATA-300 Hitachi that outperforms a WD ATA 133 by 50% or so.According to the onlike specs (backed up by other reviews I found) the Cavair blue is only slightly behind the $20 or so more Cavair Black, which is only 1.0 ms seek time slower than the $300 velociraptor.The only complaint I have is the reason I bought the 250 gig was to partition into an 80, and a 170, then RAID 0 the partition and my Hitachi. Unfortunatly, my RAID controller (750i South Bridge with media sheild) dosen't recognise partitions as HDDs like Windows, so all I would get is a 160G RAID 0, and I suspect the Hitachi may be getting old, so I wouldn't trust my personal data to it, just my game installations (in Vista game saves are automatically move to the "My saved games" folder).On a foot note, the drive is "bulk," so no cables. Also the legacy connector has been removed so you'll need a real SATA power connector.My system 28SEPT09ASUS P5N-DPentium D 950 (for sale on Amazon $145) moving to C2Q Q8200Crucial PC2-6400 (2X1024)Corsair TX750No GPU at this time, waiting to see what games are bundled with the GTX260 next mo.

I bought this disk in January 2009. It sat in the box until June 2009. It got very light use for three months and then sat unused until June 2010. After one week the system wouldn't boot. I am now running CheckDisk. The file check routine has had to repair hundreds of files. Luckily, the files are all backed up.

Box arrived without tape. Opened to reveal the hard drive in ESD bag loosely jammed into a small cardboard box. I can only imagine how well this thing traveled, the ESD shows visible signs of impact from the logic board.I've never received a HDD in this kind poor packaging. Usually a layer of something shock absorbent is standard, like bubble wrap or urethane, styrofoam... This is unacceptable.I plan on doing some diagnostics on the disk and won't be surprised if anything appears dysfunctional.The most disturbing thing was that it was shipped and placed in my mail completely unsecured and it's contents could have been pilfered by anyone along it's way.

Yes I got on on the REALLY good deal here for the drive for just under $40.00 shipped (super-saver). I won't bore you fellow enthusiasts with details that 90% of you already know. Enthusiasts are the ones that usually buy white-box OEM drives and they (and i) already know what the drive is capable of and it's specifications.It came in a small box and was delivered in a reasonable time-frame (about 6 business days) and was in a very small box, BUT it had very thin bubble wrap and the drive would slide from one end to the other inside of the box. Not good. Not good at all, but stunningly the drive was fine and tested out great. Running in SATA II mode just fine with great read/write speedsThe deal that was offered with this drive was a stunner price wise was and was quickly sold out at that price, and i'm not sure I have ever seen an HDD deal this good before for the price/capacity shipped. I'm glad I got in on it and I hope Amazon and other merchants (you know like the "other place" that computer enthusiasts/builders usually shop at) would occasionally do the same from time to time. Certainly it would bring a lof of needed traffic to the site and it's good for the economy. Even if you didn't get in on the fabulous deal it's still a fantastic SATA drive for the price.

Ive never had one issue with Western digital caviar drives, and I used them the last 10 or more years, since I never shut my machiens off they rn 24/7 and the WD caviar drives just run perfectly.I bought 2 of these caviar blue drives, now a 3rd one, the first 2 came in a nice little box with instruction manual not a little piece of paper, and mounting screws, it was well packaged and it just looked great, you definitely felt and could see its a quality drive.

We chose to buy from Amazon instead of Newegg. The methods of storing/handling and packaging these raw, OEM drives causes a lot of DOA units.Newegg (as of 8 months ago from this posting) still has problems with DOA units. I think Newegg may stack these and stress surface mount components, etc. No such problems with the amazon.com drives so we buy 100% of our drives from Amazon.Pros- Quiet- Bulletproof (the AAKS) We have 20+ (now 30+) of these in Dell T3400 Precision workstations and put 3 in each machine.NOTE: We have not had even ONE problem in 2+ years of NORMAL use - see 01/05/2010 update - (oldest 12/30 drive units are 2+ years old, others are 1+ years).Cons- None that I know of so far.Did a lot of research on the platters they use on these drives and the technology. The AAKS seems to be the sweet spot in the line. AACS and AAJS were a bit different but not much. The WD5000CSRTL model seemed to have the most problems.The environment these drives run are lab servers that are "ON" 24/7 so we don't get the same ON/OFF cycles that a home system would have.Checking the hard driveRun the "WD diagnostics" that come with the disk or you can download the utility from the Western Digital site to find bad sectors just in case you get a bad one (we never have).This utility will run on *ANY* disk (not just WD). It may take a few hours for a "full scan" but it's time well spent.01/05/2010 Update: Finally lost one of these 500GB drives due to a move to a new building. The drive was near 2+ years old. The head didn't crash and the drive spun up but Windows XP wouldn't recognize it so it needs some specialized software kung-fu to re-mount the drive. (it was a secondary drive -no OS). The data will probably be recovered into a 2nd drive. I expect one of the movers dropped this particular machine in the move (Hey, it's not a soccer ball, it's a hard drive, what do you expect?) Still a great drive for under $60.

I used this drive as an external backup inside a Star Tech USB enclosure. After backing up files, installing UBUNTU (just in case my main drive failed I could boot this one up and have access to my files) and after spending a long time organizing those files, I set it aside. I should say it lasted less than three weeks because I barely used it at all after doing the backups. Three weeks later I went to do some more backups and the drive was no longer recognized. I tried plugging it into a different computer - no luck. I put different hard drives into the enclosure and they read just fine. At one point it did read for about 2 minutes and then went dead again. This is the second 500gig drive that died on me this year (the other was a Seagate). I'm awaiting a new drive, but I don't have very high hopes.

Just because a hard drive (Western Digital Caviar Blue 320 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive)is capable of handling high G's is no reason to ship it without cushioning! The drive came in a well-packaged brown box, but had no cushioning inside - none, nada, zip, zilch!! The outside box outside did not say fragile either.I suppose it should not be unsafe to rely on this hard drive to store your precious data since shippers will have given the package TLC in its handling of this package. It's not like they throw packages around!

I already had one of these in my computer. I'd been using it for years with no problems, but I was starting to worry that something might happen eventually, so I bought two more and set them up in a RAID 5. All is still going good, I guess. Decent drive, seems fast enough, have yet to see one die.

This drive was bought as a replacement for my wife's computer, whose drive was totally fried. I should have known more before ordering and installing the drive myself. I was not aware enough of the difference between IDE and SATA, so I ordered a SATA drive for a computer with an IDE motherboard. This required adapters to make the new drive work. Once the adapters were installed (correctly, because I made a couple of mistakes along the way) I got it up and running, with the help of our son-in-law. Getting Windows re-installed also was no picnic, even though we had the disk for it, since it did not include ANY drivers for anything. The drive now works fine, and I stress that the problems I had were not due to the drive, which now functions beautifully, giving my wife more storage space than she will ever use.

I ordered two of these drives along with an enclosure that was supposed to provide RAID 0/1 functionality. These drives are excellent, but unfortunately the enclosure would not work properly on my Windows 7 box; the RAID 0/1 functionality did not work.I returned both the disk drives and the enclosure. Amazon made the process very easy, and gave me no trouble whatsoever about returning these items. Amazon is the greatest! They have earned my loyalty!

Great price for this, installed it a couple days ago and had no problems, it is the drive only as has been stated so I recommend you order a 4-pin Molex to SATA Power Connector Adapter(major outlets don't stock these) and a hard drive cable along if you don't already have them.

I bought this hard drive to bring resucitate an old workstation that had died on me. 250GB was the biggest drive the Bios and motherboard supported, so I bought this drive.Had this plugged in and running in 5 minutes (it comes in an OEM package, that means no fancy retail box, cables, or instructions). That's ok, I didn't need that. I plugged this sucker in and was up and running installing Windows 7Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade in 5 minutes.First and biggest thing I noticed about this hard drive is how quiet the drive is when compared to the old hard drive. That's the biggest difference I noticed.Overall, I swear by Western Digital drives. Bought this drive as a replacement for a drive that failed. Actually placed the order the same day that I submitted the RMA request to WD for the failed drives. I think I got the replacement for the failed one before the one from Amazon showed up. I knew I would end up with an additional drive, I just didn't expect WD to react so fast.This drive will now start out in my new NAS.... life is good.

Unit was easy to install once I downloaded the installation procedure for Western Digital. Windows XP made it easy by first installing a signature and then formatting the drive. Once formatted it works fine.

This hard disk offers exceptional performance. I had a 500GB disk come standard with my desktop but after I had to reset it to factory settings like 3 times, I just resorted to buying a new hard drive.I knew the hard disk was the problem because I'd had to have a replacement sent to me by HP just a few months after I got the desktop. I kind of blame vista home premium for screwing up my hard disk but wutever.I am now running vista ultimate on this WD hard disk. It runs like a champ. NO problems yet. Everything is running smoothly and so far, no signs of trouble.For those of you having trouble with your computer, if you have vista home premium and a crappy standard 500gb hard disk in there, this may be your answer.

If you are looking to replace a hard drive and want to get the best bang for the buck then this drive is for you. It comes in a nicely shipped box with full foam padding and in an anti-static bag. I have a mother board with built in SATA connections so plugging it up with the slim line cable that SATA drives use is so easy a 5 yr old could do it. I also have a 500wat power supply that has a single connector for a SATA drive which also is handy.The best thing is that it's 640gb footprint when formated is still close to that size around 648.89, instead of getting a 500gb HD and having 4.5gb. The speed on this is supper fast for my needs and while it runs at 7200 rpm it is noiseless and runs very cool.All things considered, I don't think you can get a better deal on a drive that is comparable in size, cost, speed and quality. If you are looking to jump into the terabite realm you might want to consider getting two of these and running them as a raid, rather than buying the $95 WD green tb drive listed on this products page. From what I understand Western Digital has three lines of these OEM hard drives, the green, blue and black (I think) where the green is on the slow side and the blue is a bit faster and the black is the fastest. Either way, for a few dollars more, you are better off with a raid setup that gives you something like 1.2 tb while the 1tb after formating will be just under that, thus denying you the rightful claim to say you have one terabite under the hood. A hard drive is a simple, basic computer component; it either works or it doesn't. I bought a matched pair of these for a NAS/RAID I put together for a client. One of the drives was DOA. I contacted the vendor and never even received a reply. I will never purchase from "Sidian" again. However, I contacted Western Digital directly and they promptly issued an RMA and we affected the exchange simply and quickly. The replacement arrived and there were no further problems. So, my review is this: Sidian as a vendor is on my "do not use" list; Western Digital hard drives I recommend and will buy again.

CAUTION: This is a 3.5" drive - NOT a 2.5" laptop drive. It appeared in my search for "2.5 sata drive 7200" so I ordered it hastily. Amazon was very good about the return, even paying the return postage. So no harm, no foul; Amazon is still great in every way except indexing listings for search. :-)

I bought this drive with caution after reading some of the other reviews, but, there must have been a bad run of faulty disks, previously. It has performed very well for me without 1 problem. It is an OEM bulk drive, but if your looking for software, go to western digital's website. Under support/drivers.. you can download (for free) Acronis True image WD edition (a cloning program and more) and it worked flawlessly. Also there you can download WD's Data lifeguard Diagnosis Tool. It is very handy to quickly test, or fully test, or completely erase a drive to start with a clean slate. However : use the cloning program carefully, because you can accidently wipe out the wrong drive if your not careful, so just pay extra attention when you are choosing destination disk etc... Also the drive came packaged very nicely and was undamaged in any way,on time, thanks UPS !!

As always, WD provides some of the most dependable hard drives on the retail market. Very happy with this drive and the dependable quality. Our radio station puts HDD's to the test with constant Read/Write activity in high volume on a daily basis...proven! Amazon's free shipping on this took a bit longer than the rest of my order, but hey...it's free! Yes sata II has a transfer rate of 6 gb/sec however unless you have an ssd hard drive it wont transfer faster than 1gb/sec and original sata is 3gb/sec. so dont think it will make a difference on a mechanical hard drive

I typically look for the Western Digital brand when purchasing a hard drive. I've never had one fail on me yet (knock on wood). The install went without a hitch. The drive is whisper quiet. I'll always come back to WD!

I stopped buying bare drives from Newegg because they had poor packaging. Now it is time to do the same from Amazon.The drive was put in a box with two sheets of bubble wrap. The drive was not wrapped in the bubble wrap. The drive was not suspended in inserts to keep it from being banged around.Worse, the two short sheets of bubble wrap put into the box were completely deflated. Not one bubble had any air left in it.So, essentially, this drive was unprotected, just banging around in the box while it was being shipped.

As is usual with Western Digital products, this is an excellent hard drive. I use this in my D-Link NAS-323 backup device, and it works great.It's a no frills drive, but is fast and would be a great purchase for anyone looking for a new SATA hard drive.Be sure to register the drive at Western Digital's website, so you can take advantage of the warranty and software options(you can download utilities and backup software from their site, for free).

Update 2/19/09:Tried to do another exchange from Amazon, and here is what I got:" ....I'm sorry to hear that you experienced the same problem with your replacement shipment.As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement..."Original 2/18/09:The drive is a big disappointment. The first one was defective. After cloning my old hard drive, it worked for a few hours. Then the Windows became very slow and unresponsive. Windows failed to reboot, it reported bad boot sector records.Contacted Western Digital customer support. Downloaded and ran Data Lifeguard Diagnostic per instruction. The tool reported the drive had too many bad sectors, also the write zeros was failed. Returned it to Amazon for an exchange.Just in case my older power supply unit was the culprit, it needed a Molex to SATA adapter to work with the drive, I ordered a brand new 430W Themaltake PSU. After receiving the replacement drive, I first ran Data Lifeguard Diagnostic on it. Sure enough, it again detected the unused drive has too many bad sectors. When tried clone my drive again, it failed half way. Only one of the two partitions was copied over. I used Acronis True Image Home 2009 15 days trial version for the disk clone. Now, my trial period is about up, and I still don't have a working drive. What a joke! Also, the price of the drive just dropped by $5 since I ordered it.It seems these OEM drive have very poor quality control. What is going on???

Perfect price & size for a system drive, it is stable & quiet, I had no problems so far. It's a OEM drive, so don't expect it to come with instructions or cables at all, that's one of the reasons why it has such a fair price.

Having suffered with a measly 40-gig hard drive for the past year, I finally got around to ordering a new one. This solved the problem perfectly. The OEM version (this one) doesn't come with mounting equipment or a cable, but it's very clear that this is the case and I can't complain if they tell you up-front.Mounting it was simplicity itself, and it has worked flawlessly since. It's very fast and completely silent, and I have noticed no increase in my system operating temperature (I have a Dell Optiplex case).5 stars, highly recommended.

Purchased on a deal for $30ish a piece. Now im seeing why they were so cheap. First unit arrives and it does nothing. No windows device will pick this drive up. Acronis doesn't see it either. I figured maybe I needed to format, but it isn't in computer management either so I cant format it effectively.Sent the first unit back and Amazon shipped me a new one. Amazon handled the entire process wonderfully. I'll buy from Amazon again, but most definitely not from WD again. Highly disappointing experience from this unit will drive me back to other manufacturers for years to come.The second drive arrived late last week to the same problems. It isn't recognized by anything whatsoever. So two drives, DOA. Time for a refund!

The first HD that I received ended up being defective. Other than that, it was easy to setup on my Dell Inspiron Desktop. It was a very simple plug and play since I was replacing a hard drive that went bad.

I have the 500gb version of this drive and WOW is all i can say...for less than $60, i got a quality drive from Western Digital. Check out the pictures i added--they're screenshots of benchmarks/error scans. It performed well, getting close to an average of 100MB/sec read speeds, with speeds up to 115/120MB. This drive runs great, the temperature never really goes above 110F (43C) if you have good airflow in your case. This drive was packed very nicely, in an anti-static bad, and a box with foam cutouts that firmly held it in place, there was no way that it could be damaged during shipping. I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking for a great performance drive at a good price. *remember this is the DRIVE ONLY, no SATA/power cables or mounting hardware is included.

I ordred 4 WD5000AAKS. I got three 500Gig drives and 1 250Gig drive, all with the AAKS label. I didn't know that was possible but it is. I was trying to build a RAID 10 and 3 500 Gig drive with 1 250Gig drive won't cut it. I had another AAKS 500 Gig drive and used that and the computers done. I still have the little drive somewhere.

Great value, whisper quiet, delivered quickly and as represented. No retail packaging, which is just fine by me. Bought to replace 160 Hitachi that failed in under 2 years of light use! I have also had issues with Seagate. Always by WD! Not one failure of 7 WD drives over the years.

I bought the WD caviar blue HD after looking at speed tests on many different webpages. Although it is not as fast as its caviar black counterpart, the difference in speed is insignificant while the difference in price is not (check out www.barefeats.com for tests if you are interested, especially this page http://barefeats.com/hard112.html).The HD arrived and was inside my Mac Pro within minutes. I am using it to back up my main drive and it has worked great. Transfer speeds were really fast, above 80 MB per sec on a sustained 150 GB transfer from one internal HD to the other. To be fair, my old HD was probably slowing it down though. I highly recommend this drive, and you can get it at a great price. I really have nothing bad to report about it. Just make sure you have your own SATA cable if you need it, because the drive doesn't come with it. If you have a Mac Pro you don't need that because when you put the drive into its slot inside the computer it connects when you slide it in (there is a connector right there which the drive plugs into when you slide it in).
