Ужасно

I had purchased this drive as part of a new system built with a bunch of used parts from varied sources on ebay, so it was not among the first things I looked at when I began having system problems. Even after ruling out the used bits as reasons for system sluggishness and weird stop errors, I tended to think I'd encountered some kind of malware rather than guessing that the drive might be suspect because I had decided to go with WD for its reputation of reliability despite being very well served by Seagate over the last decade. Now, less than two years after purchase and a little over a year of use, its going back to WD at my expense for a warranty RMA after finally cluing in to the fact that an iffy HDD might be responsible for my varied and and unspecific random errors from sound stuttering and mouse freezing to Blue Screens of Death and sudden failure to boot. After downloading the diagnostic tools from the WD website, it failed the quick test within the first 8 seconds and the extended test errors while attempting to repair bad sectors. Both supporting documentation of the test tools and WD customer support tell me the drive is defective and needs to be replaced. This is disappointing, not just due to the inconvenience of the buggy OS issues, but because it is my system drive, I have to get my replacement drive FIRST so I have something to use when I send back the drive for the RMA - this means a hold of perhaps 30 days of the retail price I originally paid on my debit card to ensure that I do end up sending back the original to WD. It is also particularly irksome since the reason I went with this drive in the first place was specifically to reduce the likelihood of running into such problems as this. But getting the replacement drive first I hope will at least provide me with the materials to be able to comply with the strict packaging requirements of the RMA return of the original, which arrived at my door apparently without the same such requirements. In retrospect, it may not be the drive's fault, but Amazon's piss-poor packaging that caused it. It probably should have been one of the first things I suspected as problematic because It arrived as a quite literally BARE drive- by which I do not mean lacking cables and instructions like most OEM products, but actually packaged without anything to even protect or secure it from damage during shipment. It was rather shocking to think it had been tossed into a box with a couple of half-inflated air pockets (well, one half-inflated and one that was essentially not inflated at all) without so much as an anti-static bag or folded cardboard stabilizers, never mind foam or plastic molding to protect it from knocking about inside the box. Said box was large enough to allow considerable room inside to do just that, with several inches of clearance on all sides. The deflated pockets did nothing to minimize the space as they simply lay next to the drive like a discarded blanket. Considering the beating that most packages take on their journey, I can imagine that it must have gone through some considerable turbulence and very well may have incurred damage from the shock. I remember seeing several other complaints about this lack of conscientious packaging, but I would check to make sure that such issues had been remedied by Amazon or take the chance of incurring the additional hassles of ensuring it still works despite such rough handling.Too bad that this may have soured my feelings about WD products a little because I don't know whether the product or the vendor is to blame for the failure, but here are the good things I can say about a drive that I am having to return as defective:-It runs quiet-It runs cool-It has a nice and uncomplicated warranty that is relatively hassle free and allows for me to get the replacement first so I don't have to be without HDD (and consequently a system in this case) for an unknown time period during the turnaround. But I can't help but wonder if I'd be having this on my mind at all if I'd gone with the Seagate instead. If anything, I would expect that WD would monitor how their products are being transported since they are going to have to replace the drive anyway if it was in fact the packaging and handling that caused its failure. If it were my product I would be concerned that Amazon's carelessness could tarnish the brand image and so would still consider it my responsibility to ensure that the stuff went out under the same strict conditions that I impose on the customer in order to send it back. I know that it has left me feeling disappointed and less confident about a future purchase of WD equipment even with Amazon's possible culpability in mind.

Figured I would post a review, especially for manufacturers to get product feedback from customer use and to know I'll definitely keep them in mind on future purchasing decisions. (Sure it's a throwaway consumer society, but I'll still hold your feet to the fire if a product fails before I'm done with it, especially if it's at a critical time. Probably sway too, as folks aren't necessarily going to be that tech savvy, so if I report a terrible experience with a manufacturer's product, they too would probably stay away.)Got mine OEM back in July 2008 from newegg via UPS (only post this since it seems on hard drive reviews, part of the equation on reliability depends on the merchant+courier+packaging) after my crybaby Vista OS had a nasty crash and didn't want to lose my data from the hard drive that came with computer on a reinstall. This hard drive has worked reliably and performed exceptionally, even if you could question why I chose to keep Vista when using this as my new primary drive. I really never turn this computer off except for power outages (probably had 26-30 such power interruptions since I began using it) and I would think the drive runs at an internal temperature around 100 degrees (~38 Celsius; this is not really uncommon) so it definitely has proven itself durable under potential fatigue along with a lot of data transfers between this drive and my original 250G along with an external drive along with moving files back and forth on my network, and of course the burden of the OS running off it.So I paid 89.99 back then which was either decent or OK and there was a deal or two not that long after that looked better, but at the end of the day it seems like a great deal that I was able to get a drive that has lasted me as it has. No funky sounds yet or anything. I've read how as drives get ever bigger, supposedly they have for now become less reliable and seems even beyond the DOA-or-not phase, so it has made me reluctant on drive purchases at the present time as none of the reviews for 2 or 3 TB drives on many of the deals that seem of interest are encouraging.

Arrived promptly and in good packing material, stiff foam cradle. No manufacturers box or CD, but SATA drives do not require these for install. Did come with cable.Installed with no CMOS action, bios installed it correctly in proper order. First boot to WinXP no problem, recognized new drive.Downloaded WD software to format new drive and then cloned my old HDD onto the new drive. Restart computer.Entered CMOS and updated boot sequence, reboot, computer stops at "verifying DMI pool"So I turn it off and disconnect the new drive and then reboot the system after CMOS changes, computer boots to original IDE HDD OS and everything is working. Retry with new drive and does not work, So I disconnect old IDE and hook new drive up by itself, change CMOS settings, reboot and system boots to OS no problem. Left the old hard drive unhooked and no problems. After about 6 months without warning "write behind caching" errors start popping up, I create a restore point and use WD Acronis software to back up HDD because I have been "here" before. A few days into the new behavior computer just starts hibernating without it being enabled and then the whole system just shuts down and computer will not recognize the drive as a valid drive.Disconnected new drive and re-installed old IDE drives and set jumpers to Master, rebooted to OS no problem and then shutdown to hook to new drive back up. Rebooted into CMOS and checked settings everything was in order, reboot and system runs fine from the old IDE drive.I ran virus/malware and check disk on new drive and nothing came up. I examined the files still on failed new drive and everything was right where it was and available to use.I can only surmise a power outage at the wrong time caused this to happen. This sounded like a good deal but it didn't last very long...I put it into my older computer and kept my old files on there and used that computer only about once a month or less ...for a period of 2 years or so...probably switched that computer on less than 30-40 times...and then it was burned out recently, requiring replacement. I will try to get a replacement but I will have to update this post then.

I purchased this drive from Amazon. It lasted a little over a year, then died. Since I had been using Western Digital drives exclusively since I started building computers in the late 1990s, I assumed that this was a fluke, and I purchased and installed another one, same model as the one that died. The second one lasted a year and a month before it also died. That's it for me - one failure could be a fluke, but two virtually identical failures is a design and/or quality problem. I am now through with Western Digital. Something has apparently changed, and not for the better. If you do buy this drive, you better be very sure that your data is backed up somewhere else...

I bought this WD 500 GB drive to replace the Hitachi Deskstar PN: 0A36891 when my girlfriend's HP Desktop gave her an alarming diagnostic code indicating potential failure of her hard drive. I ordered it on a Saturday and it was in the mailbox the following Friday. It arrived well packaged. All I had to do was tear open the static bag and connect the two ribbon cables and four drive screws.I had downloaded Acronis True Image 2011 to create an image of the old hard drive and burned an Acronis Recovery CD. The image was placed on a Buffalo USB 2.0 500GB that I had previously purchased from Amazon. Following the drive replacement, I started the desktop and booted from the Recovery CD and the Acronis software asked me to identify the target and source drives. 33 minutes later, I had restored the 126 GB image and then rebooted from the hard drive. Everything was there and the girlfriend was happy. This drive has comparable performance specifications to the Hitachi models, but was priced much better.

I have had two of these drives running in RAID0 for two and a half years now! I have never reformatted or re-created the array. They run fast and they have been solid all this time, writing and reading data 24/7 with an uptime of 99% or better. They are amazing drives when properly cooled and cared for. The only cons I would say is that they seem to have gotten slower over the years but some degradation is to be expected, and they are mostly full all of the time as of now. Basically, I have to add more space and take the load off this array and I think I'd gain some speed back. In general though, they're fast, cheap, and they tend to last. If you have a chance to buy these, do so!

If you don't know what OEM is, it stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In laymen's terms it means that you are buying something that is designed to just be installed in a computer, likely as a replacement for failed hardware. That also means you won't get ANY accessories with this; no cables, no screws, nothing. If you understand that then this is a good deal. HOWEVER...be careful buying OEMs from Amazon. As a side note, I bought this to offload significant amounts of data from my primary drive, for archival purposes. I can live without the bulk of it, but a lot of it is irreplaceable and I would really rather not lose it.Most big name stores do not sell OEM parts. Places like Fry's do because they're effectively giant warehouses full of overstock. Amazon will sell you OEM, but their packaging leaves a LOT to be desired. In the case of a hard drive, they are considered fragile as evident by all labeling on the drive itself; Amazon will not mark it as fragile on the box. That means UPS or FedEx or whoever is going to toss that box around like it's nothing. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for a properly packaged item...popcorn or bubble wrap or inflated pillows, but Amazon just had this sandwiched, in its electrostatic bag, between two plastic holders and directly placed into the box. No type of cushioning whatsoever, and it was not marked fragile. That was my first concern. When I got it home I proceeded to run Disk Management from Windows 7 to set up the volume and do a full format. It took two hours to fail at 8% and defaulted back to RAW; from that point I could no longer access it from Disk Management or CHKDSK. Bad sign - usually means there's something wrong with a sector or even a platter. I had to download a program, Partition Wizard, which after some plugging and unplugging was able to find the drive, format it and set it up. Partition Wizard did the full format in a matter of 1 minute. I ran a surface test to make sure there were no additional errors and didn't find any. Instead of fully moving the data, I copied what was there over to the drive and then I've been moving some additional stuff that was never properly archived. Reads work fine, and writes are fast over USB/eSATA bridge, but I still worry about what might have gotten messed up over the shipment. I'm going to just use it for a few months repeatedly, accessing the data and see if there are any issues, if not then I'll call it safe.Just be forewarned about Amazon's shipping methods with an OEM device like a hard drive that is sensitive to sudden shock and motion. The drive itself is solid, but Amazon doesn't seem to care about shipping it properly.

I got this a month or two ago. I installed it, attempted to clone my Windows drive, it worked, however I booted to an error. The error turned out to be related to missing boot info. After formatting and cloning again, and some recovery console work I got it to boot. However to a Temporary User account. After digging for hours with no results pertaining to a fix, I again formatted. I resigned myself to use it for storage until I decide to do a fresh install of Windows. I moved some files from another disk(I have 4 including this) let the computer go to sleep while I was away doing other things, decided to move the contents of a smaller drive to it and came back and noticed it was missing from My Compter. Looked in Storage Management and it showed as raw. Partition Table got corrupted or disappeared. After fixing that issue, Its been running fine. A bit(about the same really) slow compared to my 320gb Seagate that I've had for a few years according to HD Tach.I still have not committed to putting anything important on it, I guess I'm a little paranoid after the Partition Table incident.Personally I have only had to RMA 2 hard drives since 2002 out of 12 or so.All of that out of the way. I am very wary of hard drives lately, I've seen a lot more negative reviews from buyers complaining of DOA drives or drives that fail in hours or days than I did in the past. I accept that there's a fair chance my drive may die on me at some point either in or out of warranty, but to have it fail so early in its usage worries me. Quality Control is apparently declining in most of the major Manufacturers.

I originally bought this HD to serve as a second hard drive in my system, the first being a Western Digital 80GB with 2MB cache. First of all, you should know that because it's listed as "OEM," you're just getting the drive and nothing else. You'll need to buy a SATA data cable (if you don't have one) and have an extra SATA power connection from your power supply unit (PSU). It's not the white plug with the round holes, it's a thin black plug that looks like a larger version of the data cable. I'm not sure how people set up the partitions without a boot disc, but luckily I still had the WD Hard Drive Tools CD that came with the older drive, so I set my motherboard BIOS to have the PC boot from the DVD drive and created one 50GB partition without too much trouble. I decided to transfer my files to the new HD and use the old one for extra space, and do a clean install of Windows XP on the new drive. XP doesn't recognize partitions above 130GB (until you upgrade the Service Packs), which is why I only had the one 50GB partition to start off with (see below). The Windows install went smoothly, and I used a thumb drive to install SP1 followed by SP3 (you need 1 installed before you can install 3). I also re-installed the motherboard drivers (from the WD CD). Then I used the built-in partition manager (right-click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management and right-click on the unused space on the hard drive to create new partitions). I had the 50GB partition for Windows and programs, and created an 80GB partition for my pictures/docs/videos, a 100GB partition for my mp3s, and the rest was partitioned for copied DVDs. For some reason, XP only recognizes it as a 465GB hard drive, but it's not a big deal, as it's still more space than I'll need.I re-downloaded a lot of the programs that were on my old HD, and otherwise copied most of the files over without too much trouble. If you have enough space on your HD, you should keep the original installation files instead of deleting them (the install package for my Zune, for instance, is 131MB, and too an hour to download again. I reformatted the Zune to start fresh with my updated and reorganized collection). After making sure everything was copied, I cleared some of the partitions on the old HD and used that space to make one big partition. I re-copied a few important files back to the old HD, just in case the new drive ever fails (unlikely). The HD performs really well. It's nearly silent, and loads everything much faster than the old HD (I'm now able to start XP and immediately access my drives and programs, where before the desktop would show but nothing would respond for a few minutes). Going from 2MB to 16MB cache makes a huge difference. All in all, this hard drive is a great buy (I remember buying the 80gb for $60 just 3 years ago! How technology changes...).

I've had my eye on this drive for almost a year, based the great reviews for speed and reliability it receives on several web sites. My 250GB stock drive was finally full of movies and music, so I decided to take the plunge and purchase this drive. Had the old drive out and new one in my 24" white iMac in about 20 minutes, and after a reinstall of OS X, and full restore from my Time Machine backup drive, I was back in action. The first thing I noticed was the quicker install time for the OS (about 20 min vs. 30 for my old drive). Once I was up and running, my machine is much more peppy starting up (about a 30~40% increase in time to desktop from power on) and apps start up equally as quickly. I'm really surprised the difference in performance from the OEM 250GB WD SE Caviar that came installed stock. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone.

Western Digital & Seagate both produce excellent drives in which I have a high confidence. My purchase was the WD Caviar Blue with a fairly large buffer. It has a good warranty period (longevity rating in this case). The old WD drive it replaced fell within expected lifetime. The new drives have amazingly fast throughput, but users should not waste their time on drives with rotational speeds less than 7200RPM and buffers less than 16M. Of note is that in most cases, the "bulk/OEM" drive unit is the most cost effective purchase in that these are usually purchased for replacement. Therefore, the mounting hardware is easily transferred from the old to new drive. The data cables are keyed, so installation is virtually foolproof. The new drive's geometry will be automatically recognized by the system for setup and format. This new unit shipped promptly, and was delivered promptly.

Ужасно

I have spent LOTS of cash on hard drives and i happen to work in a huge electronics store. They got computers, mobile phones, gadgets, hard drives and sometimes things break down. We got western digital drives as well and i noticed that 4 out of 20 are returned from customers because they crush!!! Samsung hard drives never come back after they get sold. Thats what i noticed at my work and before i posted this i got also the technicals support guys opinion and also now my personal expirience. I have a samsung hard drive for 4 years and i started to get worried in case it crushes down and i loose all my data. So i went and got a western digital. I had it three months and it worked slow and after crushed. I threw him out of my window. My samsung still running. Overall? This hard drives are a waist of money. Thanks

For those of you looking for a inexpensive hard drive, this is a great drive to use in my opinion! I bought this as a second hard drive in my computer since the original one is only 80 GB and so far in the six months I have been using it, not one problem. I am a mid level computer user in my opinion, so when I read that this was a "Bulk" hard drive, I knew that I would need to buy the cables seperate, not a problem for me at all, but some people will over look this. I started using it with Windows XP, not one problem at all, for about two months I have been using it with Windows 7 and not a problem at all there either. I have a dual boot system and this drive is the drive that now has Windows 7 on it. I bet it took about 10 minutes to install, but the formatting took about 30 minutes due to the size. Long story short, I have way more room now and I have not had one problem yet. I would recommend this drive to anyone, but for those of you out there who are not familiar with "Bulk" items, you will want to make sure that you buy the cables needed too.

Just got this drive, you will have to format it before use, but I experienced no issues at all. No bad sectors, no trouble. This thing is fast and quiet. Very happy with it so far...I've taken the time to really get a good healthy install on it and it has paid off. I'll follow up if anything changes, but as of right now I am 100% happy with this purchase! Also, received this in a little under 2 days! Great shipping, packaging was professional - shock mounted drive, original WD box inside of a larger box.

not a bad deal for a hard drive, it is bulk, which means its the bare minimum of packaging quality and otherwise, but you dont really need an instruction manual or anything to install a hard drive, just screw it into place and plug in the SATA and power cable.a bit of a note, this doesnt come with a SATA cable, its just the hard drive in a static resistant bag in a plain cardboard box. so if you dont have an extra SATA cable lying around, you are going to need one.Build:ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 - AM3 - AMD 890GX - DDR3 - USB 3.0 SATA 6 Gb/s - ATX MotherboardAMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0 GHz 4x512 KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail ADX640WFGMBOXCorsair 4GB Dual Channel Corsair DDR3 Memory for Intel Core i5 Processors (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)OCZ OCZ550FTY Fatal1ty Series 550W Power SupplyWestern Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD5000AAKSThermaltake V5 Black Edition Mid-Tower Gaming Chassis VL70001W2Z (Black)Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98 - Retail (Black)

I've bought several of these recently, and many Western Digital drives over the years. I have yet to have a WD drive die on me.This one is fast, quiet and cool. A perfect upgrade for my Parents' PC. I also like how Western Digital plainly prints the capacity and other important info on the label in bigger font then other brands.Mine came well packed in a nice frustration free box in a box. air bags took up the empty space.

I needed to pair this with another since my RAID (other HD model) broke. As expected, no issues and working well.

It is hard to rate longevity when I've only had it a month. However over a couple of years I've gotten six of the same model, and I'm still happy with all of them.

I bought this drive to upgrade a desktop computer and install W7 on it. Drive arrived in simple packaging and it was not formatted. Installation was a matter of 5 minutes in my desktop and the system (5 year old Dell) immediately recognized it.Everything went well the very first time; only comment is that drive is so silent I thought it was not working on the first booth after OS installation.Highly recommended.

I build desktop computers for my friends. This is the 4th WD hard drive that I bought. I have not any problems with WD. I am using this 500g as a primary drive and it is working properly. Placed it inside the case, loaded it with Windows 7 and my desktop started up without a hitch. A bonus, it is very quiet.

Плохо

This is for the WD5000AAKS WD Caviar SE16 5000gbMDL: WD5000AAKS - 00TMA0DATE: 28 DEC 2006DCM: HBNCNV2ABI ran these drives as a pair in a RAID 1 setup on a D-Link DNS-323 NAS enclosure. Worked great until failing recently with no warning (although the NAS was configured to run a daily S.M.A.R.T. test and email me if there was a problem). This afternoon the NAS box sent me a simple message "The Left Hard Drive has Failed".Again, being in RAID 1 mode I did not lose my data (but am doing another backup in case the remaining drive fails). The drives worked well up until the sudden failure. They were configured to spin down after 30 minutes of no activity so I guess 4 years is a good run. These drives do tend to run hot during use though.Newer-model, single-platter drives run cooler and should be more reliable than this old 2006 beastie so I ordered a Samsung Spinpoint drive to replace it. Hope I get a longer life from it.

I bought this drive to use for my Windows 7 backups. It arrived in good shape and formatted easily using Windows 7 disk manager. I connected it with a SATA/USB drive adapter from Cables to Go. Works great, drive is quiet and cool, and I can store it in a fireproof location so my backups are safe.

I purchased this hard drive as a replacement for the one that Dell installed in my XPS CPU years ago. As with most computer components this unit did not have any interfacing problems into the rack. There was no problems with installing Windows 7 and data processing and retrieval seem to work great. I've been running the hard drive for about three week now and I'm happy with it.

As usual, WD makes the best harddrive out there. The only thing that is ever in question is the price. Not this time.Good price great product. I expect it to last for 10 years or more if needed.
