I received this drive in 2 days, but it was a paperweight. Poor packaging, the drive wasn't detected by my install CD and it was battered in the box. Not a recommended product.

Did Not Work,I Bought an Adapter to Use it in a Sata Computer, and it still didnt detect in the Computer. I Was on the Phone With Dell For Four Hours trying To troubleshoot it before they finally told me it was a defect.

Received item and it had a defect that caused OS to crash one one computer. Tried on several other computers and it locked up the OS (WINXP & WIN 7). Company was efficient and issued a refund for the item. Was disappointed as my experience with Western Digital has been good for over 10yrs.

These drives are susually solid, as Western Digital does a good job. First one, out of the box, was DOA.The second worked fine.BEWARE...these drives from Apex Suppliers are out-of-warranty. I attempted to register the good drive and it was out-of-warranty in 2011.

Feb-2012: if you are thinking about purchasing this drive, please be aware that the drive I received is WD800 (80GB) and not the WD1600 (160GB) as advertised. The replacement drive is also wrong as it probably came out of the same warehouse. The generic box has a label that states it is a WD1600AAJB but the drive inside is WD800AAJB. The serial number on the box label matches what the drive label is, so I think the supplier messed-up and short-changed Amazon. I don't think I can fault Amazon for this problem.

I do not know if the glitch was with the supplier or the Amazon website, but the drive is for a desktop computer when what I ordered was labeled for a laptop. The problem has been fixed on the website and Amazon sent me a return shipping label free of charge and credited me back promptly. There is nothing wrong with the drive, it is of a high quality that we are familiar with in my work.

I have used Seagate, Western Digital, and others, and I like Western Digital drives best. But then again, they all seem to perform equally well. It just seems like the desktops that I buy all come with Seagate drives (Dell computers), and they sometimes die after only 2-3 years.These drives were a good deal for the money when I purchased them. They are still working great, and I'm very happy with this purchase.

Sad to say this drive was dead on arrival. It was purchased as a slave drive. The BIOS reported it as a drive with 0 megabytes. Windows would not recognize it. After much research and fiddling I called Western Digital and they agreed that the drive was dead and they issued a return authorization. They replaced this drive with a 500GB which is working fine, so I have no problem with Western Digital tech support. I guess I just got a bad drive.

Purchased to replace a failing OS PATA HDD from a 10 year old desktop PC.I checked the old manufacturer's manual for the PC and found no incompatibilities.WARNING:Apparently the additional power requirements were too much for my aging PC. My power supply should have plenty of wattage to spare, but power supply wattage supposedly decreases with age.Anyway, the power supply failed to provide enough power and screwed up something on my old Maxtor slave HDD. Oddly enough it started working again after running ddrescue. Finally I had to disconnect the Maxtor slave HDD to keep the new WD HDD happy with enough power.PRO:Still working after 2 months of light usage.CON:Requires more power than previous IDE HDD. ~25% more W to spin-up ~100% more W for read/write ~100% more W for idle standby & sleep are roughly the sameOTHER:OEM WD HDD includes jumper connector, this was as expected.OEM WD HDD does not include PATA cable or mounting screws, but this is also as expected.

So far, I've been through an 80GB, a 160GB, and this 320GB hard drive for my Dell Inspiron B130, the result of 400 YouTube videos and the giant video files generated by the need to create them.I've also bought 2 1TB external hard drives to store those files and started pulling unneeded video files off my internal hard drive to keep things cleaned up. Seems to be working.

I go through a lot of these Western Digial 160GB drives (WD1600AAJB) drive where I work (probably 40 in the past year). With computers, the most common failure is going to be the hard drive. When anything with moving parts is run so hard for so long, failure is more less inevitable. When I do run into hard drive failures with the older PC's, the WD1600AAJB 160GB hard drive has been a great replacement drive. It doesn't come with a PATA/IDE cable, screws or anything like that, but 95% of the people buying this (or more) will be using it to replace a failing drive in an older PC, so that's simply not needed. Options for PATA drives are becoming a bit more scarce these days, so if you need a reliable replacement drive, you're not going to do any better than this one.

My older HP drive was slow, bogging down the system. It was old, filling up,& needed replacement. This 160GB PATA 7200RPM did the trick. I am happy with the service,& got what I wanted with fast response & delivery.

Installed this hard drive to replace OEM Western Digital 40 GB in a 7 year old Dell computer. Drive was totally compatible with existing components. It works as anticipated. The Western Digital 160GB appears faster, however that can be due to the fact that previous HD was nearly at capacity.

Purchased this drive to refurbish an older desktop so it could be used for surfing the web, doing email, etc. Only had the system up & running for a couple of months, but so far... so good.System is nice and stable using WIN XP PRO SP3. Drive is very quiet.Replaced the system memory at the same time with PNY OPTIMA 2GB (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit DDR 400 MHz PC3200 Desktop DIMM Memory Modules MD2048KD1-400. Original configuration only had 512 MB RAM.

I bought this drive as a replacement for a small capacity drive in one of my Windows XP machines. I went through a lot of effort to reflash the BIOS in the computer to allow a drive of this size to work properly on the machine. Once this was done, the Acronis software worked great to transfer the information over to the new drive. All looked really good until after 14 months of relatively infrequent use it suddently dies with no warning. Now I'm back to using my old drive an I very much doubt I'll bother to buy another replacement.

This hard drive is excellent. We are replacing HDs on older machines in our shop enviroment and these worked excellent. We are imaging the old HD onto one of these. First thing we noticed is how much quieter the old machines are and the boot speeds has increased. The older HDs were definately showing their age. I will definately be purchasing more of these as i continue replacing old HDs.

I installed the harddrive and installed Win7, the harddrive performed just as designed works great I'm happy with the harddrive.I'm not happy with the shipping "Prestige" they delivered to the wrong house and it took some follow-up calls on my part to get the harddrive delivered to the right house misstakes like this are inexcusable.

I purchased this hard drive to replace the 60GB hard drive in my HP Pavilion 742n purchased back in 2002. There was nothing wrong with the old hard drive and it had alot of free space left. The HP system recovery is on the D partition of the hard drive, and not on seperate CDs. If the hard drive did go South, I would have to purchase another operating system. I intended to install the WD hard drive and keep the old one as a back up in the event I needed to re-install the operating system.As stated, this is a bulk OEM package. All you get is the hard drive, no cables or attaching screws.I've been in the computer case before to clean out the dust bunnies from the cooling fans, upgrade the memory, and replace the CD writer with a DVD burner. This seemed to be a little more involved and made me a little anxious. In the end, it turned out to be very easy.The ribbon cable connected to the hard drive had provisions to connect two devices. The connectors were clearly marked with "primary" and "slave." I left the jumper settings on both hard drives to "cable select" and connected the WD hard drive to the "slave" connector. There is a diagram printed on the hard drive showing the jumper settings for the different configurations. I did alot of research beforehand on cloning software and decided to just use the Acronis cloning software available from the WD website. The cloning software will only work if it detects a WD component. It was easy to use and pretty much self explanatory. Once the cloning was done, I removed the old hard drive and attached the WD hard drive to the primary connector.The computer booted right up without any problems. I decided to test out the HP system recovery (pressing F10 when you see the blue HP logo) and it didn't boot into the HP system recovery. It just rebooted back to Windows.From what I could determine, it has to do with the partition configuration, which I haven't quite figured out yet, and frankly don't have any plans to at this point.When you do a system recovery, the computer reverts to as it was out of the box, with all the annoying programs that it came with and none of the programs you installed. I have everything set up just like I want it on the old hard drive. If anything should happen, I can just use it to re-install everything.The hard drive is very quiet, in fact, I can't even hear it!All in all, I think this a great product at a very reasonable price and a great way to update an older computer.

I had one of these for less than a week before it died, the bios would see the drive but windows refused to. I exchanged it for another of the same and the replacement drive does not have the correct size mounting holes on one side-the screws will slide in and out. The replacement also caused failure and data damage to the primary drive in my system. The Windows error checking utility has been running overnight trying to fix the damage cause by this drive.

This drive arrived in a sturdy manufacturers box with the plastic pieces that held the drive firmly and shock resistantly. Popped the drive into the computer and presto, it just worked and it has been chugging away for months now with no issues. Quiet, runs cool, and very fast consistant with the interface.

Everything about the item was excellent. Well packaged, quickly shipped, performs well upon installation. My only problem was upon ordering, the product description said the drive was available in both PATA and SATA configurations(parallel vs. serial). My older computer required the PATA as a replacement hard drive. The Amazon ordering process did not facilitate the specifying of one of the two available configurations. It took various phone calls to Amazon, and emails to the product supplier to assure me the PATA version would be shipped. It turned out well, but this was the first time I encountered ambiguity, frustration, and delay in placing an order with Amazon.com

I didn't have any trouble with the WD 320gig hard drive. It runs very quietly and efficiently, resulting in noticeable performance gain over the old 80gig drive that failed.the packaging was perfect, and delivery was rapid.Once again, Amazon delivered!!

I was looking to resurrect a security camera system that had multiple hard drive failures, but it was too expensive to replace the entire system, and was unable to replace just the computer due to proprietary hardware key to secure the system from unauthorized use. I knew there were limited options as everything has been leaning towards SATA or solid state, plus the company that built the system has since gone out of business, so I figured I'd take a gamble and try replacing the hard drives to get the system back up and running. Knowing that WD made reliable drives, we got the 160GB EIDE drive for the OS and 2 500GB slave drives for the DVR data. I've replaced several OS drives for desktops and laptops, and one of the cool tools you can get from the WD website is Acronis WD Edition, which allows you (with a USB to IDE/SATA cable) to clone your boot drive, and then just replace the old/full/defective drive with the new drive once the cloning process is complete. It's a free download from WD as long as you had a WD drive connected to the computer at the time of install. Given my situation, I also opted for the full Acronis disk management software which was only $50.00, as I had to format everything to work with Win98/FAT 32.With the successful clone/format/install, the security system is back up and running considerable faster, exponentially quieter, and all within a relatively small budget. I've never had any problems with WD internal or external drives, and would recommend them to anyone looking to replace an existing drive, or add additional storage.

I bought this as a replacement for an aging 80gig WD drive that was still going strong after 7 years. I just needed the extra capacity and speed. As always, WD hasn't let me down with this one. I always buy WD or Seagate. They are the best.

I bought this drive after reading other reviewer's comment that confirms this is an IDE drive for older PCs, not SATA. Printed instruction would be helpful for those who may want to use this as a slave drive. Otherwise one can obtain instruction from Western Digital.

This WD 7200rpm drive ([...]) was exactly what I was looking for to replace a drive in a older, EIDE system. The price was reasonable for the size and the shipping was quick (even for standard shipping). I was also able to use WD's Acronis True Image to clone the smaller, Seagate drive I was replacing. Worked like a champ!

I wanted to upgrade my destop computers and these hard drives were just what I needed. WD makes excellent drives that are priced competitavely and are very reliable. Bought 2 and they're both working just fine. No problems installings. Kudos to WD for also providing a free version of Acronis backup/cloning utility to help make the transition to these drives relatively painless.

I don't upgrade my computers nearly as often as the average person. I use it for general use and don't have a gazillion programs demanding a ton of resources. And I don't download everything I see on the internet. So I don't have the need for a huge HD. I just recently upgraded to this 160 GB drive from the 40 GB one that came with this Dell Dimension 3000 that I'm happy to say I've had for many years now. It runs faster and is quieter than my old HD. I don't know what else can be said. I like it.Western Digital is the only company I trust when it comes to HD's. They are tanks. I've never had a problem with one nor seen anybody who has. This doesn't hold true with Maxtor or Seagate. I've seen problems with both. To me durability is priority #1. When I buy something I want it to last, because I don't upgrade often. I plan on using XP Pro until they stop supporting it, and also just upgraded from 512 MB of ram to 1 GB. I know, the horror! And you know what?... my PC is greased lightning. It's how you use what you've got that's important.And yes, we ARE still talking about computers here ;)

I got one of these for a media center PC that I use to watch videos. It generally only gets used once a week or a bit more on the weekends. It's hard disk sounded like its bearings were going out so I replaced with this drive. I've had it in maybe a week and so far no issues. It installed fine, files transferred successfully, and it's passed both Seagate and WD disk checkers with no issues. I can update my review if it dies an early death, but I have no complaints right now.I'd suggest you pay more attention to reviewers who say they've had the drive for a while. I can only speak to what it did in this short period, but those long term ones give a better idea of quality. Still, WD has worked well for me in the past...with the exception of one fried drive a few years back. After my last experience with a Seagate 1TB drive, I think I trust WD the most of any brand.

So far so good...my computer and I are thus far, happy and content.I purchased this hard drive on a Monday and received it with free shipping on Friday. Can't beat that. I was lucky that it was on sale for $43.99. Still at the current price, and with free shipping, it's a great deal, and may buy another to replace an older backup.I am using this drive as #1 Primary and I have a 40G #2 Backup installed in an older Dell Dimension 4400. I installed it, exactly the same as the replaced drive (WD 80G), and the jumper was factory installed in the same position as the older drive(cable select, far right) A while back I also updated the Bios at Dell that repaired the 137G Hard Capacity that may effect using this drive.While the computer was open, I carefully cleaned the interior components using canned air dust cleaner, and a vacuum. I also checked all cable connections before closing.I then formatted and cloned with Acronis True Image WD Edition ([...]) Acronis is a super product that made the installation a breeze, and comes highly recommend to not only install a WD hard drive, but for backup, and diagnose your newer and/or older hard drive.I highly recommend all 3:AMAZONWD 160G Hard driveAcronis WD EditionAgain...so far so good!

This hard drive is a very basic OEM version. No cables are included or hardware (screws). I would recommend using this hard drive in a RAID array.

Great to use with a 128 mb graphics card(ATI) and 2 gb RAM(I recommend PNY) 2.XX ghz Pentium 4.I increased the storage space of my old harddrive by 3x, the cache speed by 8x, the memory by 20x and video card put in the PCI slotThe computer runs brand new and is very fast now.

Order this item 3 days ago and just now getting shipping confirmation. Expected delivery date posted as 7 days from now. Being shipped USPD. No indication of where the product is coming from. NOT impressive. Before starting this review and not having even seen the product, I decided two give it a product rating of three stars. Changed my mind and went back to lower its rating to 2 stars.Western Digital makes good product and I expect the drive will work fine for years. But, no matter how good the product is, this experience with Amazon has left a bad impression.This is only the second time I have done business with Amazon, but I expect it is the last.

the title said it all. I was surprised it was so quiet; I can barely hear it! seemed a little faster than the drive it replaced. This was a bit pricey for the drive size, but then again this is an out-dated technology so that's understandable.

Purchased this drive to replace a WD 320 PATA HD which lasted only a year and a half. Unfortunately was faced with the blue screen of death that made the drive unrecoverable. Hope this unit lasts a lot longer than 18 months. All of my other drives are Seagate some of which I have had a long time and are reliable. Only reason I purchased this drive was that Seagate PATA or IDE drives were unavailable from Amazon. Judging from all the other postive reviews, I sincerely hope that I am wrong. Otherwise, very quiet and fast. How long it will last is a good guess.

The computer this drive went into is an older computer, Pentium 4, 2.0 processor. Primary use is for the kids. Hey, if they mess it up it's no biggy. Anyway, the drive it replaced was a Maxtor 20g, yep 20 gig, not much space these days. The Maxtor was a rather noisy thing too. We used Acronis to copy the old drive to the new drive. The cloning was a snap. Since the install we have had no issues with the WD drive. I do say a great drive, more space, it's quieter than the Maxtor and faster. A refreshing upgrade. I would recommend it and Acronis for the cloning.

Decent priced PATA's are getting hard to find. SATA drives are comparably much cheaper. Excellent hard drive to replace an original. Have been using it for several months now and have had no problems.It did not come with an installation disk and I had a hard time to get the computer to recognize the drive. Finally I resorted to Sys C: and it worked, even though the drive had not been recognized. After that it was easy to boot from the XP installation disk in the CD ROM drive.

I am most pleased with this 320 GB PATA/IDE (40 pin connection) for my older Desktop PC! Very Quiet! Runs the COOLEST of 2 other internal and 2 external hard drives on my system! I use this Drive as my Boot Drive.I have never seen it hotter than 86 to 87 degrees F. It has all the modern disc drive features, including a Self Check to let you know it is healthy.My other two internal 1 inch by 3.5 inch drives are both SATA. The brand new WDC WD10EARS 1TB drive is also quiet running, but has gotten only 4 or 5 degrees hotter than the 320 GB IDE. An older WDC WD1200JD disc that has been in operation for 16 months on the same PC and is also SATA, gets 10 degrees hotter than the 320 GB PATA/IDE disc. One of my older external drives is a 500GB SimplTech USB drive that runs up to 90 degrees, and is more than whisper quiet. It uses a Hitachi HDP725050GLA360, which is probably an original IBM design (Hitachi bought IBM Disc Drive Div. a few years back). If you need an IDE/Parallel ATA disc for an older PC, you cannot go wrong with the WD3200AAJB in my humble opinion! If your system can boot from a SATA Disc drive, get the biggest one you can afford and get one that's at least 300 SATA. Most are Gigabyte for gigabyte cheaper than IDE/PATAand you can find relatively inexpensive SATA PC cards that caan handle from 2 to 4 discs. There are several around the 1 Terabyte size for under $100 now on the market.Why? Fast with only 4.2 seek, 7200 rpm, QUIET, and COOL running.
